The first jam-packed disc in this low-budget double set is full of so much crazy rhythm, jive poetry, brilliant lines, revolutionary rhetoric, hate, love, venom, vigor, incantatory genius, and over-the-edge performances that you'll hardly be able to listen to it in one sitting. While perhaps a bit too in love with the words "fuck" and "nigger" for many listeners, this four-piece infused the dead horse of beat poetry with a staggeringly vibrant, militant, inner-city, often funny, totally African American flavor. It captures them in the early 1970s as they threw down heavy, musical words atop flowing, complex rhythms. The second disc features later "comeback" selections, interesting attempts at mixing their inflammatory style with rap beats that rarely work; the Last Poets don't need drum machines to reign supreme and have already been sampled plenty in hip-hop and electronic music. Ultimately, this is fierce, hefty-duty, musical spoken word that's among the most important of rap progenitors. --Mike McGonigal

John Lennon's solo work has been anthologized so many times that it's hard to believe there wasn't a definitive compilation before this one. And, depending on your particular take, you might not find Lennon Legend quite hitting the mark. However, since it does contain the brilliantly scathing "Working Class Hero," doesn't ignore the woefully underrated Rock 'n' Roll album, and catches the hopeful renewal that came toward the end of his foreshortened life, it's probably about as close as anyone's going to come. His great songs shine, meditations like "Imagine" and his rockers had form and content, as in "Whatever Gets You Through the Night." He was an icon, and this does him justice. --Chris Nickson

Amazon.co.uk

Imagine a place where the personal, political, and emotional elements of John Lennon's music converge together seamlessly in one cohesive production. An assortment of his finest solo work, Lennon Legend: The Very Best of John Lennon is of great interest to anyone who's ever been a fan of the Beatles, the Plastic Ono Band, Yoko Ono, or simply the genius himself. Ranging from a rendition of Ben E. King's "Stand By Me" to the sounds of the Plastic Ono Band and the Harlem Community Choir on "Happy Xmas" and the classic anti-war anthem "Give Peace A Chance", the recordings assembled here stand as a testament to one of rock's most complex and influential musical talents. If you believe that Lennon's greatest period of creativity came to an end with the Beatles, you owe yourself a listen to this album.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of great songs,.......2007-07-03

and two or three that are not. This is the most complete collection of Lennon's solo work I've heard. Lennon reminds me of the old poem about the little girl with the curl in the middle of her head. When he was good, he was very, very, good ("Imagine"), when he was bad, he was horrid (the primal scream stuff he did with Yoko, which fortunately isn't included here).

5 out of 5 stars just about all of his greatest hits........2007-04-11

what can I say, this cd has most if not all of his greatest hits after the beatles broke up

3 out of 5 stars Missing.......2007-03-29

"Happy Xmas War Is Over" and "Cold Turkey" could easily have been left off this compilation in order to make room for one of Lennon's most haunting and beautiful melodies, "Old Dirt Road," which was penned by Lennon and Harry Nilson during their partying days in LA. Too bad.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection.......2007-03-17

This is a great collection of some of John Lennon's best songs.
I love it!

5 out of 5 stars Among the Best Ever.......2005-11-02

This has to be one of the very best retrospective albums ever produced. It spans the entire careers of the artists and includes much of their best work--from Les' experiments with multiple recording in the 1930s (on acetate, using a turntable made from an old Cadillac flywheel) through their major hits of the 1950s. The liner notes are extensive and authoritative, consisting mostly of an extended interview with Les Paul himself, describing the background to each song in sequence, how and when it was composed/recorded, the instruments used, and interesting asides as to the performances.

Not everyone will appreciate this music. It got mixed reception when it was new, and it lies far from contemporary style, but on its own terms it is superb. I first knew this music as a high school kid listening to the radio. Coming back to it five decades later, after considerable musical education and experience, most of it classical, I realize how far it went over the heads of my teen generation.

The musical skill and sensitivity Les and Mary display far surpass most popular artists of the past century. Professional guitarists and guitar makers may revere Les' legacy, but Mary deserves at least as much praise for her vocal skills. Her phrasing is wonderfully elastic, comparing with the best of Peggy Lee and Ella Fitzgerald. Her intonation is impeccable--including her five-part harmonies and backups with herself via multiple recording. And her entrances in the multiple recordings are perfect--where Patti Page was often ragged and Doris Day feared to tread. All of the arrangements are magnificently suited to the spirit of the song and to the talent of the performers. And most of the songs have never had a more competent or imaginative presentation. "In the Good Old Summertime" is an absolute tour de force.

Some might quibble over the choices made in constructing this release. But there was only space for 20 tracks, and this selection is arguably the best possible coverage of Les and Mary's incredible range. Inevitably, within the limitations of 20 tracks, some good things muwt be left out. Those who want more should try to find the complete boxed set. I think it is useful to have Les and Mary's superior "Mockingbird Hill" and "Tennessee Waltz" versions to compare with the ones from Patti Page. I am happy to trade that comparison for any other choices which could have been made.

In all, this album deserves a space in the library of every serious music collector--both for its historical importance and for the excellence of its presentation.

4 out of 5 stars Good Collection But Needs a Bit More Balance.......2005-08-06

I'm a huge fan of Les Paul and Mary Ford and I own a copy of the "Legend and the Legacy" box set, so I may be a bit biased in my review of this disc, which frankly I think is a little top heavy with the vocal works.

There are only a few instrumental tracks here, and while those are very good indeed, some of Les's best stuff was left out. Had I been compiling this disc I would have included "Brazil", "Caravan", and my all time favorite Les Paul instrumental piece "Little Rock Getaway", in which Les cuts loose with just about everything in his arsenal. Like "Lover", it's a very interesting and complex arrangement that's a joy to hear.

I'm also a little puzzled as to why some of Mary Ford's best vocal work was left off this disc. I would have gladly traded her cover version of "Tennessee Waltz" for "Cryin'", a song that I consider to be one of the most beautiful things she's ever sung. "Dry My Tears", a song with which Mary Ford and Les Paul and closely identified, was also left out. That aside, I am thankful that the powers that be saw fit to include an edition of Les and Mary's radio program that features "Avalon", "Where or When", and "I'll See You in my Dreams", three songs that I would love to have heard in full on the box set.

All in all, I think this is a fairly good collection, albeit a bit heavy on the vocal hits and not nearly representative enough of Les Paul's extraordinary guitar talent. Until you're fortunate enough to find the box set, this collection will have to do.

5 out of 5 stars A great overview of Les Paul & Mary Ford's hits.......2005-06-18

Released in 1992 as a single disc distillation of the hard to find "The Legend and The Legacy" boxed set, this CD, although it has some instrumental work, it focuses more on his hits with his wife at the time these were recorded, Mary Ford including the huge hits "Mockin' Bird Hill," "Tennessee Waltz," "How High The Moon," "Bye Bye Blues," "In The Good Old Summertime," "Tiger Rag," and, among others, one of my personal favorites, the spiritual "Vaya Con Dios" which is translated to "May God Be With You." Les's production techniques are ever present on this disc, but what makes this disc worthwhile is Les's guitar and Mary's singing with the music being a great mixture of many kinds of music that is hard to describe other than Les Paul music and as another reviewer mentioned, it is very comparable to Chet Atkins, another one of my favorite guitarists. BTW, this disc has been reissued recently with 3 bonus tracks added but as long as this pressing of it is still available, pick it up while you can, as it is cheaper than the new reissue, released to celebrate his 90th birthday. For those who prefer his instrumental work over his duets with Mary Ford, the disc to start with is the ASV Living Era compilation "How High The Moon," but this is still a great companion to the ASV disc. For those who are wanting more and can't find the boxed set, Collectables reissued the original albums in twofers.

5 out of 5 stars A breath of fresh air for the early 1950's pop scene..........2005-03-11

If you think about it pop singing hit an all time low after the swing era ended and you had 2nd rate singers singing about doggies in the window, and music music music!!! So it must have been refreshing to hear something different, and "How High Tho Moon" certianly was that. Paul's guitar was overdubbed as well as Ford's sensious voice. For some outer space style, ahead of it's time space-age msuic, with a tocuh of rockabilly, and even vaudevillian style playing. In fact most of thier hits were from 1920's sings like Tiger Rag, & In The Good Old Summertime. Thier formula worked over and over again. It is a unique mixture of hillbilly jazz meets esquivel style wackiness. This cd captures thier hits and the formula taht made them stars. And today these guys should be celebrated in the "lounge revival" music era. A great cd, and it's really all the Paul & Ford you need.

3 out of 5 stars Technically accomplished guitar playing, slick production.......2004-07-30

Besides being a fantastic guitarist, Les Paul is also an accomplished engineer and inventor. This album does not showcase Les Paul the guitarist so much as it does Les Paul the producer. Many recording and mixing tricks are featured here, including his interesting trick of playing several licks, playing them back at different speeds, and mixing them together in such a way that they're all in the same key. These recordings sound wild and futuristic today; it's hard for me to imagine how they must have sounded fifty years ago.

Some songs here (notably "Lover" and "How High the Moon") are great, but at least as many are disappointing. Also, Les Paul's highly sped up guitar tracks can wear on the ears after a while - they're on nearly every track. In short, this album is essential listening for anyone interested in great guitar plaing and fancy production, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it holds up well to repeated listening.

This is one of the finest Mahalia compilations to date. Included in this two-disc set are two selections ("God's Gonna Separate the Wheat from the Tares" and "Oh, My Lord") from Mahalia's VERY FIRST recording session in 1937. It also includes a complete listing of the composers and recording dates for each of the each of the 50 selections in this set. Mahalia always sang with such strong conviction and you, the "listener" will be lifted through her renditions. Purchase and enjoy!!!!!!!!!!

Robert Redford's fable of a cynical, young, white war veteran (Matt Damon) learning the perfect golf swing--and the meanings of life--from a mysterious black caddy (Will Smith) is typically rich in subtexts, from racial discrimination to armchair existential philosophy. As she did for the period dramaThe Cider House Rules, English composer Rachel Portman imbues Vance with an American sense of time and place. Bookended by the bluesy jazz of Fats Waller, Mugsy Spanier, and Duke Ellington, Portman's elegant orchestral score is rich in powerful brass and string-driven melody and emotional nuances. Portman once again displays a strong affinity for the plaintive resolve and emotionally longing colors of Aaron Copland's most familiar works, and there are moments here that subtly evoke passages of that composer's Lincoln Portrait. It's a fine irony of modern film that one of Copland's spiritual heirs and most effective practitioners of his essentially male American musical ethos is a soft-spoken Englishwoman. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A soundtrack as wonderful as the movie!.......2005-08-17

When I first saw the picture, the music was one of the two bigger impacts it had on me (cinematography being the other). I had one of those experiences where as soon as the credits were finished I was already planning on purchasing the soundtrack. Problem is the average CD store did not hold it. Lucky for all of us there is Amazon.com!
The music composed by Rachel Portman is nothing short of wonderful! Very American in its orchestration and has often reminded me of the score to JFK (John Williams) & The Natural (Randy Newman/ironically another Redford film). From the scenes where Damon's on the golf course and the camera performs its classic Hitchcock maneuver, to the humorous driving sound as Theron's character takes on the city councilmen, this score proves to be one that must be cherished by all movie music goers.
This is a soundtrack that can inspire people with imagination and heighten the experience of outdoor activities. I myself have played this score while hiking back home and it has performed beautifully. When I play this in my free time it has allowed me to drift away from troubles and distress.
As for the tracks that aren't Portman's composition, they are equally enjoyable. The sound of Muggsy Spanier, Ellington, & Fats Waller are just pure boogie, woogie, oogie know what I mean? Makes you wanna swing.
It's a good soundtrack, one that I am lucky to have in my horde. If you can get it, I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Why is this soundtrack so hard to find?.......2004-02-18

It goes without saying that a good score can either brilliantly enhance or possibly downright destroy a movie. With the film "The Legend of Bagger Vance" you have a beautiful story accented by beautiful scenery and beautiful period sets and costumes. Anything less than a beautiful score could lessen the appeal and, ultimately, the certain quality that could make this good movie great. Rachel Portman has developed a reputation for making okay movies unforgettable. Any less of a score could have ruined "The Cider House Rules" or even more so "Chocolat". Ms. Portman's score is a perfect example of how image and sound should come together to create something beautiful. In addition to the evocative and nostalgic opening fanfare-like theme, Ms. Portman welds together at least three other prominent themes, as well as a virtual abundance of recurring motifs. But, unlike her recent score CD for "The Human Stain", this album contains a much more varied mix of music that, most times, leaves the listener simply wanting more, but at the same time feeling totally satisfied. Unfortunately, if this review has successfully whet your appetite for this album, all you have to do now is find a copy for a reasonable amount of money. This soundtrack is highly reccommended, but good luck finding it.

5 out of 5 stars The Legend of Bagger Vance.......2003-02-20

Great soundtrack, very relaxing and emotional. Very pleased with the cd music, but disappointed in what I had to pay for it. Also, the seller represented it as NEW and it was not. It had been resealed!

4 out of 5 stars This soundtrack was worthy of an oscar........2002-11-07

When I saw this film I remember thinking, "what an extraordinary soundtrack" and I immediately went out and got the cd. And now a few years later it almost always is in my cd player. I love, love, love soundtracks and this is a homerun to me. I don't remember what the competititon was for the oscars that year but I wish it would have won. I don't even remember if it got a nomination. If you like Randy Newman's work, Aaron Copeland and maybe Hans Zimmer, you will like this cd. She did a really wonderful job. I wish I knew more about the composer.

5 out of 5 stars This is my favorite CD.......2001-11-04

I purchased this CD to find a music selection for my daughter's skating routine. I had previously purchased "Cider House Rules" soundtrack and thoroughly enjoyed it, so we purchased this after listening to the samples on Amazon.com. This soundtrack has to be the best one I have heard! I watched the movie after I had listened to the CD, and I must say that Rachel Portman's music brings the movie to a whole new emotional level. I, too, wonder why this was not nominated for an Oscar. Rachel Portman has that special gift to communicate through her music. I look forward to purchasing more of her works.

    Amazon.com's Best of 2001

In November 2000, legendary director Hal Prince hosted 3hree, an evening of three one-act musicals, at his namesake theater in Philadelphia. It says a lot about Prince's clout that a cast album was released a few months later; it says even more about his unflagging taste that the pieces are so good. Laurence O'Keefe and Neil Dunbar Benjamin's "The Mice" is a darkly comic romp about a couple and its mice problems, while Robert Lindsey Nassif's "The Flight of the Lawnchair Man" is whimsical but never cloying. "Lavender Girl" is set in 1927, thus allowing John Bucchino (whose songs have been championed by Patti LuPone) to let loose with a great Charleston ("We've Got Time"). He also shines with the passionate ballads that are quickly becoming his calling card (though "Real Enough to Change My Mind" admittedly teeters on the brink of Disney territory). Overall, the CD is remarkably strong and will be a great pick for those who crave new musical-theater voices but cringe at Michael John LaChiusa and Adam Guettel's lack of melodies. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

3 out of 5 stars Cute Three in one!.......2006-07-25

Ok So this is three one acts put into one show. The First "Mice" is ok. Pretty cute idea. The second, I can't remember the name of it, is probably the weakest, just not much substance. But the final one, "The Flight of the Lawnchair man" is really nice and is worth the 10 bucks alone. The Lyrics are quite clever in all the acts, but the music is definitly story telling, no amazing ballads here. My favorite song would have to be "Tiny."

4 out of 5 stars Catchy tunes, good subject matter.......2006-07-20

    The Mice
    ---------

My favorite of the three, this is a story about an affair between an exterminator and the neglected wife of a tailor. The songs are particularly hilarious when dealing with the townfolks, and the music is incredibly bouncy, especially considering the (very dark) subject matter. Valerie Wright's (Virga) delivery in "That's All I Need" is wonderfully light, and John Scherer (Allan) is hilariously accommodating in "Mice!" These are some of the most clever lyrics you will hear, and the rhymes are wonderful. (I'm sorry, but rhyming "cyanide" and "pesticide" with "blushing bride" is just incredibly funny to me.) If you like the music from The Wild Party (LaChuisa), and Thoroughly Modern Millie, you'll probably like this piece as well.

    Lavender Girl
    ---------------

I can't say much about the plot of this one without giving everything away. It's essentially about a very brief love affair. The music is adequate. The only piece that really gets stuck in my head is "We've Got Time." It's a wonderful homage to the '20s ballroom style, with lots of syncopation, swing, and harmonies. Again, we're in Thoroughly Modern Millie territory here. However, the rest of the act just doesn't stand up next to this particular number. Granted, the performances are great, but there just isn't enough material left in the plot to make one care, and it's just one ballad after another. I feel like adding just one more up-tempo song in here might have made this more complete.

    Flight of the Lawnchair Man
    ------------------------------

I didn't realize until Mythbusters happened to do an episode about it, but apparently "Flight of the Lawnchair Man" is based on the true story of Larry Walters (a.k.a. Lawnchair Larry). Searching for him on Wikipedia will turn up the details of this "true urban legend." Despite this being "grounded" in reality, it's an awfully silly plot. The music is incredibly inconsistent, almost like the writer had a bunch of different musical themes lying around and decided to stick them together. We've got everything from Italian tarantella to Broadway-style kick-line. There are some truly awful lyrics in this one (particularly in "Genius" and "To Tame the Sky") such as:

"Once I tried to fly a sofa/Once I tried to fly a school"
    and
    "I'm the background/I'm like underwear"

Still, this absurdist (but apparently mostly true!) story (about a man who straps 400 helium-filled balloons to a lawn chair) is somehow transcendent, almost like a Shel Silverstein story. Fans of Joss Whedon's Firefly will probably identify with the sentiment of "The Air Is Free." If you liked Maury Yeston's Nine, and you happen to really enjoy numbers like "Hello Please" from Pacific Overtures, you'll probably like this show too. Everyone in the cast gets to shine with some sort of hilarity, and "Never Finish Before You Are Finished" steals the show, and makes up for the terrible lyrics in "Genius." Some sample great lyrics:

"I could have given up and landed inland, in Finland, and had a Finnish finish and been done"
    and
"Better to last to the last and be last"

The puns just keep on flying. Get it? Flying? *groan*

5 out of 5 stars Buy it for the Lawnchair Man!.......2003-03-23

Stumbling upon the incredible BATBOY, I discovered this other gem with the only other Laurence O'Keefe musical on disc. Expecting to fall in love with O'Keefe's "The Mice", I found that the brilliance of composer Robert Lindsey Nassif about the story of a man who flies in a lawnchair. With catchy tunes by famous pilots - Amelia Aerhart, Charles Lindbergh - this show is jampacked with gorgeous ballads, funny and catchy upbeat sontgs and that extra bit of love to touch the heart.

    It's worth it. Get it.

5 out of 5 stars You cant beat it........2003-01-01

All 3 show segments of this cd are equally fabulous. Beautiful melodies and clever lyrics and stories make this cd a joy to listen to. The cast is wonderful in their character interpretations and all have beautiful voices. I would have loved to see this live. Besides, what other show has a singing Amelia Earhart in it?

5 out of 5 stars The Musical Has a Future.......2002-01-01

Having grown up in New York in the '70's, I have since felt that the musical has not gone anywhere since the groundbreaking days of "Company" and "Follies" and subsequent Sondheim milestones. Nothing really exciting and new happened for years. Having just finished hearing "3hree" for the first time I must say that I am very optimistic about the future of the musical. Although I found Adam Guettel's "Myths and Hymns" awe-inspiring and Jason Robert Brown's "Songs for a New Word" exhiliratingly beautiful, neither of those shows had stories, and the same composers attempts at book musicals seemed less wonderful to me. "3hree" is made up of three genuine book musicals that are moving, exciting, original and intelligent. The songs tell stories that touch you and make you think. I am very excited about this CD and am looking forward to hearing it again and again. Each of the three musicals far surpasses "The Producers", which to judge by the CD, seems very familiar and unexciting. If you love musical theater definitely buy this! Hearing it has left me much encouraged at the prospective of the future of the musical. Between Adam Guettel, Jason Robert Brown, the writers of "Urinetown" and the writers of "3hree", I think we have a lot to look forward to in the next decade. There very well may be a renaissance of the musical. Stephen Sondhein, you are no longer alone.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Antonio Carlos Jobim and Other Delightful Surprises.......2000-05-27

The four Columbia LPs comprising this boxed set illustrate Andy Williams' uncanny ability to adapt to the evolving pop music scene of the '60s. "Dear Heart" (1965) consists of ballad standards (including Andy's hit version of the Henry Mancini title track), warmly executed in the traditional pop style. "The Shadow of Your Smile" (1966) finds Andy experimenting with hits of the Beatles, including a pleasingly lush "Michelle" and a hot, swinging "A Taste of Honey." Sitting in on guitar is Antonio Carlos Jobim, the godfather of bossa nova, on his compositions, "Meditation" and "How Insensitive." Ironically, how insensitive that Jobim is not credited on this reissue, since his name and photo appeared on the back of the original LP jacket.

Starting with "Born Free" (1967), Andy began focusing on covers of Top 40 hits. New producer/arranger Nick DeCaro emphasized the rhythm section, creating a younger sound especially evident on "Music to Watch Girls By," a vocal version of a Diet Pepsi instrumental theme. Complete with go-go beat, blazing electric guitars, and double-tracked vocals, "Girls" made it into the Top 40 in 1967; but thanks to its recent use in a Fiat TV ad in England, the reissued single climbed to no. 9 on the British charts in 1999, launching an Andy Williams U.K. revival.

Perhaps the best album of the four is the richly textured "Love, Andy" (1967), also produced by DeCaro. The rhythm and horn sections are hot, while Andy's vocals are ultra-cool. Highlights include Burt Bacharach's "The Look of Love" and a far-out "Kisses Sweeter Than Wine," with its arresting beat and Andy's triple-tracked vocals. There's a hip, sophisticated treatment of "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" (revived in a 1998 British ad for Peugeot). Also noteworthy is an innovative classical arrangement of Brian Wilson's "God Only Knows," featuring Lincoln Mayorga on piano.

        5 out of 5 stars A Tribute to a Legendary Performer.......2000-04-16

Through the years, Andy Williams has performed the works of a number of gifted composers including Rodgers, Berlin, Webb, Hamlisch, and Bacharach. This CD features four of his most memorable albums: "Dear Heart," "The Shadow of Your Smile," "Born Free," and "Love Andy." The recordings reflect his warm, mellow voice accompanied by smooth, flowing instrumental treatments. His music evokes a tapestry of emotions from froth with "Music to Watch Girls By," to reflection with "Try to Remember," to romance with "The Look of Love," and even rapture with the intimate and deeply moving "Holly."

You may save a few dollars by purchasing the same songs with the same impeccable quality through two separate, lower-cost CD's available on this site: "Dear Heart/The Shadow of Your Smile" and "Born Free/Love Andy."
