Though it sounds like it was conceived and recorded between bong hits inside a college dormitory, Cheech & Chong's 1971 debut album was actually the product of years of comedic honing. In the late 1960s, guitarist Tommy Chong founded a musical/performance art troupe called City Works. The venture was short-lived, but it introduced him to fellow boho-prankster Richard "Cheech" Marin. When City Works faltered, the duo hitched their wagon to the burgeoning drug culture of the day, and Cheech & Chong was born. Their brand of humor wasn't particularly innovative--after all, making comedy for stoners is like preaching to the choir--but it was unquestionably of its time, and more importantly, it took greater steps toward anesthetizing the "drug menace" than any government program ever has. Elton John doesn't seem like a natural choice to write for a Disney musical, but he rose to the task on The Lion King, transcending his usual penchant for the softest of soft rock. Sir Elton's collaboration with Tim Rice (former writing partner of Andrew Lloyd Webber) helps connect the soundtrack to the theatrical lineage of all Disney musicals--so much so that, like Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King was eventually adapted for Broadway. Undistinguished songs like "Can You Feel the Love Tonight?" are far outnumbered by stirring, stately tunes that lent the film so much of its sense of pageant and play. --John Sanchez

4 out of 5 stars fun but flawed.......2007-05-07

in 1994, the lion king came out and broke records. the film itself took in an astounding 312 million dollars in the us. that makes it the highest grossing hand-drawn animated feature EVER (an accomplishment that will never be toppled since niether disney nor dreamworks is producing hand drawn features any more). that year at the oscars it also won two awards for the musical score and best original song (three of its songs were nominated0. so how does the music really stand up compared to other disney features.

first off there's hans zimmer's score. his score is both powerful and moving. it brilliantly incorperates elements of local african music (provided and arranged by lebo m) these elements give it a great feeling of belonging not only to the film but to it's setting. without these tribal elements the score would have been far less compeling. one small problem is when the score abandons these elementsl; they're not carried through in all of the music. but its not enough to be a real distraction. the power of the score allows the listener to feel the wildabeast charging or smell the rain falling during the monsoon or experience the brilliance of the circle of life.

SCORE 5 out of 5

the songs had music by elton john and lyrics by tim rice. the following is a song-by-song breakdown.

THE CIRCLE OF LIFE - this is a great opening number with powerful vocals provided by carmen twillie and impressive african-inspired vocals in the beggining by lebo m. with the actual film, this is not only a moving but inspiring piece of cinema. even without, this is a great song that still gives me goose-bumps. this definately warranted its oscar nomination
5 out of 5

I JUST CAN'T WAIT TO BE KING - this is a really fun song by simba and nala along with zazu. its infectious beat and lyrics definately leave u humming. this may not be the most memorable song, but it definately captures the youth and innocence of simba at this point
5 out of 5

BE PREPARED - this is scar's big number so to speak. it features the hyenas in a very dark yet memorable song. the rhaspy vocals and wonderful musical arrangements make this a great piece that is both eery and impressive.
5 out of 5

HAKUNA MATATA - this is the second oscar nominated song, and although its fun buddy type number, it does get old and doesnt really age as well as the rest. this is honostly one of the weakest songs, believe it or not, its good but just cant really hold up to the other stronger pieces.
4 out of 5

CAN YOU FEEL THE LOVE TONIGHT - here it is, 1994's oscar winner for best original song. honostly i feel that the circle of life deserved that award, but here's the song that got it. the film's version is very romantic, especially for featuring a couple of lions, timon and pumba's parts are funny, but it is simba and nala's portion that takes it home. btw elton john's version at the end is a definate winner.
5 out of 5

SONGS OVERALL - 5 out of 5

so if the score gets 5 and the songs get 5, why does the album only get 4? the answer's pretty simple. for the first time since 1989 with the little mermaid, two composers helped on this film. one provided the film's score and one provided the music for the songs. because two composers worked on this, it feels a little incohesive at times. this isn't really noticible within the film but on the soundtrack it definately stands out. elton john and hans zimmer both did a great job and the only really saving factor are the african rhythms that they both used. although this is a great soundtrack, that lack of unity does bring it down.

despite that minor flaw, this is a must-own for any disney fan or music fan in general. this is a great soundtrack that ranks right up there with beauty and the beast and must never be forgotten.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Perfect.......2007-04-09

This is hands down one of the best Disney soundtracks ever! Elton John came up with some killer tunes here! The opening song always give me goosebumps!

4 out of 5 stars Great Album!.......2007-03-31

This album is great, but I can't seem to find the part where simba and scar fight at the end. i was thinking it would be on "King of Pride Rock" but its not... so i'm a little disapointed in that. (thats one of my favorite scenes for some reason) other than that, i love the songs.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, if only for the instrumentals.......2007-02-14

The songs with lyrics are cute and memorable, but the strength of this album is in the last four songs. Listen to "This Land" and it instantly transports you back to the scene with Simba and Mufasa laying under the stars, and then to the scene where Simba sees Mufasa in the clouds. Listen to "...To Die For" and you feel an intense claustrophobia as you relive Mufasa's last moments and Simba's discovery of his father. Listen to Under The Stars and you can practically hear Simba screaming, "You said you'd always be there for me!" And when King Of Pride Rock comes along, you can feel your heart swell as you see Simba take his place on Pride Rock. The instrumentals are incredible works of art that never fail to draw intense emotion.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Soundtrack.......2006-11-16

I'm writing this review not of the release of this Special Edition, but of the music contained within. Disney's release and re-release of products is nothing new. It's one of the reasons that Disney is so strong in the market today. With that said, I have to admit that this is one of the best Disney soundtracks that has ever been cut to a disc. I never owned the original release of this music, so I'm glad that Disney did decide to re-release the original work with a few extras as part of the "The Lion King: Special Edition" release. Everything on here is wonderful, and the score itself was key to the development of the story. Selections such as "King Of Pride Rock" and "To Die For" encompass the emotional ups and downs of this film. Elton John's music is also wonderful on this disc. His most notable offerings are "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" and "Circle of Life." His only downfall is "I Just Can't Wait To Be King," which should have been left to the youngster who performed Simba's singing voice. It comes acrossed as forced by Elton John as he performs it.

The "extras" for this Special Edition include a mild and unnecessary remix of "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" and "The Morning Report," which is included on the Special Edition DVD release. Neither add to the collection, but it is nice to have "The Morning Report" on the disc.

Overall, this is one of Disney's strongest soundtracks. In my personal list, I rank it in second place behind Phil Collins' wonderfully tribal "Tarzan" soundtrack. If you don't already have the "Lion King" soundtrack, I highly suggest that you purchase this special edition copy if you are a true fan of the film or of Disney soundtracks in general.

Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Who'd-a thunk it?.......2007-06-19

Between release of this album and now, Cheech Marin became a bona fide actor and co-starred with Don Johnson on "Nash Bridges". I can just hear Pedro de Pacas' sidekick Man; "Pedro becomes a pig? Bummer, man!" This album was my follow-up purchase to their first album after hearing the duo's Holiday hit "Santa Claus and His Old Lady" the previous year. I bought their earlier album looking for that track, and to this date, no C&C album has featured it. You have to get Dr. Demento's "Greatest Christmas Novelty CD Of All Time", but that's another story. This album grabs you from the first track "Sister Mary Elephant", and I was reminded of it this past Sunday in church, where four baptisms were held. The predictable noise level caused by siblings present forced the Father to practically bellow his sermon, despite the p.a. system, and I commented to my choir director that the padre could have used the help of The Screaming Nun; "Good morning, class...Class....SHUUUUTUUUUUUP!!!" You will also get a foretaste of Marin's versatility in the next album "Los Cochinos", when Marin uses a great Quebecois accent to interview Chong in the part of a crab louse "Buster da body crab" in one sketch on that release. A lot of the humor in C&C's work is sophomoric to say the least, aimed at the Animal House demographic whose sons watch Comedy Central's Carlos Mencia today, but the content of these men's humor obscures the fact that they are brilliant.

5 out of 5 stars No Sophomore Slump On This One!.......2003-12-30

By the time Richard and Tommy were ready to record again, they had become BIG STARS, which was somewhat unexpected. Their first album was a hit, but these guys were now in the same league as the biggest rock bands of the time, something unheard of in the comedy field. To support their first album, when they came to Denver, they played a great little club called Ebbets Field in downtown. When BIG BAMBU arrived, they were playing arenas. They were the hottest ticket going.
And they deserved it: BIG BAMBU was a great follow-up, from the huge rolling paper which came with the original LP to tracks such as "Sister Mary Elephant" (a hit single), "The Continuing Adventures of Pedro de Pacas and Man", our two favorite canines, "Ralph and Herbie", a right on the target skewering of every television cliche imaginable including the famous "Let's Make a Dope Deal", and so much more. These were all bits that you memorized and shared with your friends, falling into hysterics every time. Their first three albums are their very best, and all worth adding to your library. Of course they're silly, timely, sophomoric, socially astute, scatological, and sometimes profound. That's what makes the best comedy. Thank you, Tommy and Richard. You're the best.

5 out of 5 stars Must Have for Party Animals.......2003-09-24

I bought this record upon its original release (circa 71-72) at the tender age of 12, it was my parents reward for having cursed me with my first pair of glasses.

Mom hated it....dad *loved* it...and he was a 20 yr Army Vet (translated-POT IS DEADLY mentality).

I challenge even William Bennett not to laugh at this.

If I had not memorized this CD when it was an album I might not be sure I was here for the seventies and eighties! The humor is timeless and the timing is brilliant! Worth listening to even sober!

5 out of 5 stars Three For Three!.......2003-12-30

When I was in high school, Cheech and Chong were THE ONES. They were the hippest, the coolest, the funniest. Their bits were memorized by every student, and you really could see people passing each other in the halls on their way to the next class, throwing lines back and forth and dissolving helplesslessly every time. All you had to do was walk up to Study Hall, knock, and someone would always say "Who is it?" in just the right inflection. You, of course, would have to respond, "Dave," and off you'd go. The teachers never seemed to get it, but that's because C&C were our generation's very own comedians, our Abbott and Costello, our Laurel and Hardy, our Martin and Lewis.
And Los Cochinos (with its great die-cut cover) was their pinnacle. The classics "Basketball Jones" (on which George Harrison played guitar, Klaus Voormann played bass, and the Blossoms--with Darlene Love, no less, sang backup--how cool was that?) and "Pedro and Man at the Drive-In" are both here in all their glory (and it's so sad that Generation X never got to go to a drive-in). We also have a classroom visit from Sargent (sic) Stadanko (with the absolutely perfect sound effect of the wooden chair being pulled out from the desk--that's MY homeroom!), a send-up of communal living with the "Strawberry Revival Festival", the "Evelyn Woodhead Speed Reading Course", and, of course, The "White World of Sports" interviewing Coach Umgwana Kickbooti. Unbelievably funny, even thirty years later. Laugh yourself silly, and, yes, we DID dress goofy in those days.

5 out of 5 stars Still good after all these years.......2001-08-15

Its a cool album, man. The only semi-weak track would be "Up His Nose" everything else is hillarious. Possibly their best. "It is not, man. It is so, man. It is not, man. It is so, man. It is not, man."

5 out of 5 stars Let's talk about your record.......2000-09-19

I enjoy listening to the comedy routines on this CD. My favourite tracks features the great basketball player Tyrone Shoelaces, who does everything but sell popcorn during half-time. I love BASKETBALL JONES so much I am like a junkie. The song is like a song to me. ;D If you enjoy a good laugh, you will enjoy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars A comedy classic.......2000-05-29

One of best comedy records ever made, some of Cheech and Chong's best routines are here. Including "Pedro And The Man At The Drive-In", where they try to sneak a bunch of friends into the drive-in by staching them in the trunk and then not being able to get them out, this bit also features the hilarious pirate movie spoof where a crew member gets punished for buggering another shipmate. The classic "Basketball Jones" is also on this album. One of C&C's best albums(and a Grammy winner too! ). This one still makes me laugh out loud.

5 out of 5 stars Right Out Of The Gate.......2003-12-30

A whole new kind of comedy album was born with the debut of Cheech and Chong. When this album hit the racks, there was literally nothing like it; the best way to describe it to someone who hadn't heard it, at the time, was to use the great phrase "hard rock comedy". And that's what it was! Comedy for the Woodstock Generation. And it didn't pander or talk down to the audience--Tommy and Richard spoke directly to their audience, knowing that they were smart enough to get it. These guys were the real deal--they had been through the trenches of bad nightclubs and drunks and thieving clubowners and came out on the other side with indelible characters that had a solid base in reality: I grew up in Denver, Colorado, and I knew many Pedros and many, well, Man men, and all of them were sweet and had an innocence at their core. Richard and Tommy's caricatures were not far removed, and oh, were they funny! Cheech and Chong were our street comics, and God bless them for being there when we sorely needed laughter. This first LP is a, pardon the pun, stone classic. One hilarious bit after another: "Dave", "Cruisin' with Pedro de Pacas", "The Pope, Live at the Vatican", the debut of "Blind Melon Chitlin'", "Acapulco Gold Filters", and so much more. Buy it and laugh forever.

4 out of 5 stars Classic.......2003-01-24

Just get it, listen to it 50 times, and you will never recover. Make sure your bladder is empty, though. You will mainline C&C for the rest of your life. And if I could give it more than 5 stars I would have.

5 out of 5 stars HELLA FUNNY!.......1999-12-29

5 out of 5 stars Cheech and Chong's funniest album.......1999-12-13

Cheech and Chong may have turned into movie stars later in the '70's, but their best humour was on this classic album. Stoner comedy has never been so hilarious as on these early bits: 'Dave', 'Blind Melon Chitlin', 'Acapulco Gold Filters' and 'Trippin In Court' are the best, but they're all excellent. This cd is even more consistently funny than the "Greatest Hit" compilation. This is essential Cheech and Chong.

Well, you get the idea.

You're right, SS. It's drug humor. It's silly and childish.

It's still funny for all of us old farts. But I know a lot of kids (folks in their 20's) who think that "That 70's Show" is hilarious, and that Tommy Chong is also hilarious.

So, maybe you're just opinionated. Truth in the quality of entertainment ... is... well, it's subjective, dude. There are no facts there. Only opinions.

And frankly, you just don't get it.

1 out of 5 stars Not what I thought it was.......2007-04-05

I bought this album because I wanted the earache my eye skit. How surprised I was to find that this selection is only the song the kid was playing, and has none of the actual skit in it! BOO! I would rate this CD a zero if there was such a rating. If you are looking for the real deal for earache my eye, try the Wedding Album.

5 out of 5 stars Dave's Not Here!.......2007-01-15

I bought this CD for my brother for Christmas and he loves it. It brought back lots of great memories from "back in the day". :0) I'm going to get myself a copy, too.

2 out of 5 stars it is not that funny.......2006-09-28

Some comedy is so clever and energetic that it can withstand the test of time. Unfortunately, Cheech and Chong is too attached to the 1970's counter culture and has no relevance to what qualifies as humor today.

There are no punchlines, no set ups, no funny observations, no clever parodies, just 2 burnouts going around acting stupid.

When I was a kid this stuff was hilarious. "Smells like dogsh__", "Class...shuddup" and "Ear ache my eye, how would you like a buttache?" were all real funny to a 9 year old. Any cuss word on record was funny. It's not that funny anymore

I bought this cd and it is bad. It utilizes too short of exerpts from the albums. After the first listen, when I got over the nostalgic rush of it, I really could not listen to it any more.

This material does not have the power of an old Bill Cosby, Richard Prior, Geroge Carlin or even a Mel Brooks album.

Cheech and Chong will always have a place in my heart, their first movie will always be a guilty pleasure for me but their recorded material does not have the creativity of a comedic work that is enduring.

I cannot imagine that anybody born post 1975 would enjoy this.

Sorry Cheech and Chong fans, I got to tell it the way it is!

4 out of 5 stars I just HAD to get this..........2006-03-24

...and even though I will only listen to it once or twice, it is just as funny now as it was back in my long haired days.

The technical quality of the CD is very good, MUCH better than my old 8-track or LP of this recording. Sister Mary Elephant shouting a distorted "SHUT-UUUUP!!!! Thank you." never sounded so good.

This is a great CD for bringing back memories of the good old dazed.. uh, I mean days.

5 out of 5 stars alltime comedy classic.......2005-03-06

At camp, in 1978, my best friend brought a tape of this album. We must have worn it out by the time we left camp, and laughed our brains out time after time. "Championship Wrestling," is absolutely classic, no doubt. "Other Tapes," features a busted-up biker getting exactly what he deserves from a happy man of medicine. R. Zimmerman's testimonial is an all-too-real glimpse of the future for any smoker. "Earache my Eye,"--well, who hasn't lived that one before school or work? I'll get an earache the next time I want to skive off work. "Wake Up America" is funny as all get-out. Geraldo Rivera needed somebody to parody him, and still does. "Baby-Sitters," with the modern-day version of "Three Little Pigs," is another laugh-out-loud bit. never drink anything when playing this album--you may land in the E.R. for real, kids.

3 out of 5 stars Starting to show some wear.......2003-12-30

By 1974, Richard and Tommy had been running at full creative speed for five years; inevitably, their juices were running low. WEDDING ALBUM is only about half an album, filled out with bits which never quite worked. After the incredible quality and success of the first three albums, this one is a big letdown. There are some bits which are truly inspired: "Wake Up America" is a great jab at Geraldo Rivera, although the "Black Lassie" song in the middle of the bit wears out quickly, and "Earache My Eye" (which was a hit single) is still quotable years later. The remainder of the LP shows that the guys really needed some rest and a chance to recharge their comedy batteries. For completists only.

4 out of 5 stars Not their best, but it still shines........2002-12-25

After some great initial albums, Cheech & Chong seemed to have started losing their magic touch with this album, and didn't quite recover in later years. There are still some great routines here, but for the first time a few boring and excessive tracks also found their way onto the album. "Championship Wrestling," although a sadly classic scene from everyday life, is fairly dull in both the right and left tracks where two different comedy routines happen simultaneously. "The Other Tapes," where a hospitalized motorcycle accident victim undergoes a painful examination, isn't much more funny than listening to a torture. "Hey Margaret," however, despite being very vulgar, has always struck me as very humorous, maybe because of the total abandon with which it is done. It's also a reminder of the greater freedoms of the early 1970s in the pre-Meese Commission era. "Black Lassie," based on the popular black pride song "Theme From 'Shaft'" from 1971, is pretty good also, as is the 1974 radio hit "Earache My Eye." The album's worth getting for its better routines.

3 out of 5 stars Wedding Album - the best yet!.......1999-11-29

Cheech and Chong's fourth album shows you didn't have to be a doper to get the jokes.Having trouble . . . A)Babysitting brats? B)making out in your girlfriend's parents' house? c)doing an expose on the recording industry? Then you'll know where the laughs come from.

5 out of 5 stars KINDA GRABS YOU BUY THE BOO BOO, MANNN.......2002-05-25

Got to be one of the best soundtracks ever, 1st gear,2nd gear had me sore with cheech marin's infectious laughter, and tracks like the instrumental strawberrys and lost due to incompetence are essensial listening for those of us that enjoy the odd nostaliga trip back in to the 70s, cheech and chong themselves rock out on tracks framed, searchin and rock fight.along with the soundtrack for easy rider, up in smoke is indispensable.

    5 out of 5 stars still smoking.......2001-05-19

the best and funneyest cd i own i like lowrider and up in smoke good cd and its cheep too!

4 out of 5 stars after all these years.......2000-10-21

I happened to catch the movie the other day on comedy central and it sure brought back memories(they didn't all go up in smoke!}.The comedy is a little dated by now but still pretty funny. I confess I bought this cd for one of the tunes on it that is unavailable any place else that I know of. Throughout the movie whenever the van is seen rolling down the road a very infectious piece of music drives along with it. I later came to find out the name of that tune was called "lost due to imcompetence"(theme for a big green van). I live for a good guitar dominated instrumental piece and this one is a beauty. Apparently at the time some of the best session musicians in the business formed a band called "Yesca" just for the purpose of recording some of the music for this movie. You'd be hard pressed to find a better driving tune than this one. There are some other interesting pieces on the cd also and I'm sure if you're a fan you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars UP IN SMOKE *cough cough*.......2000-07-05

ONE OF THE BEST SOUNDTRACKS I OWN. GET WHILE YOU STILL CAN REAL GOOD STUFF. ITS SO GOOD IF I WEAR IT OUT I'LL GET ANOTHER.

4 out of 5 stars BLAST FROM THE PAST.......2000-05-18

JUST FINISHED WATCHING THE MOVIE SO I DECIDED TO CHECK OUT THE SOUNDTRACK. BROUGHT BACK ALOT OF MEMORIES AND STILL MANAGED TO GET THE HEAD BOBBING AND THE FINGERS SNAPPING. AT THIS MOMENT I'M STILL HUMMING "TAKE A LITTLE TRIP, TAKE A LITTLE TRIP." ANYWAY I RATE IT FOUR STARS FOR ORIGINALITY AND HUMOR. I WOULD LOVE TO FIND A ORIGINAL ALBUM, UNOPENED, AND TAKE A TRIP BACK TO THE GOOD DAYS.

    3 out of 5 stars Edited.......2006-07-08

Although I have enjoyed Cheech and Chong's comedy for years, this CD has been edited from what it should have been. I still have the cassette version and was looking forward to the CD with higher sound quality, but instead got an abridgement of each track. What makes Cheech and Chong fun to listen to is their unrestrained humor and this holds back too much in my opinion.

3 out of 5 stars Hey Man, This Is On DVD Down Under Man!!!.......2004-06-18

Here in Australia this is available now on DVD!!! Tho i'm pretty disapointed with it. I had it for year's on the end of somthing else on VHS but I ran out of room on the VHS and never got to see how it ended... and I was sadened to know that my VHS version was only missing probably the last 3 minute's of the film, or the final song :(

Paying $16 Australian is not too bad. But it really saden'd me to find out it all only run's for about 50 minute's!!!! It dosent even go for an hour :( Please, If Universal ever read this, and you sometime in the future plan a release of this on DVD in the USA, then dont put it as it's own DVD, make it a bonus feature with another great Cheech & Chong film, 50 minute's is more a bonus material length man, not a DVD on it's own.

This look's like it was made for MTV or somthing? It's the last hurrah from Cheech Marion and Tommy Chong, it strays alot from any of the previous films, but it has it's moments! It basicly is kind of an interveiw with them, but on there terms, As they have produced a new album, and now they wanna make a video to it... there's some funny stuff in there, somtimes i never know if there serios on some things, or if it was planned, or rehersed, or just did it on the spot? But really, If Americans get a propper release of this on DVD, then I'd rather know it was a bonus feature on somthing. A 50 minute long movie with no captions & no bonus features is not worth having on it's own seperate issue. t should be a bonus feature!

3 out of 5 stars "Born In East LA" and the last of Cheech & Chong until 1997.......2003-04-23

Cheech & Chong officially split after they appeared in AFTER HOURS (1985). It wasn't until 1997 (12 years later) during the "Wild Card" episode of the CBS tv series "Nash Bridges" did they reunite in a professional way. This Cheech & Chong "Get Out Of My Room" (1985) is all recorded on professional video. It plays like a documentary where Cheech wants to do a music video "Get Out Of My Room", but Chong just wants to talk to girls. Actually, this is Richard "Cheech" Marin's first time as Director. "Elvira" Cassandra Peterson has a cameo appearance as well as Beverly D'Angelo and Jan Michael Vincent. Includes the hit video "Born In East LA" which was a take-off from the original tune "Born In The USA" by Bruce Springsteen. Both Cheech Marin and Bruce Springsteen have credit for "Born In East LA". The weird "Love Is Strange" video also included in this video.

5 out of 5 stars The Last Hurrah for Great Comedy Duo.......2002-03-23

What can I say about this truly entertaining comedy album? It's nostalgia for Generation X'ers such as myself who were "de-virginized" by Cheech & Chong's randy & off-beat drug related humor. For budding adolescents at the time, listening to their ridiculous & truly crude comedy was, strangely enough, appealing! The highlight of this album, of course, is Cheech's spoof of Bruce Springsteen's hit song "Born in the USA". BORN IN EAST L.A. is still a great tune to perk up the day. As a testament to their memorable comedy talents, this is a true collectible for any fan. I just wish these guys reunite one of these days.

1 out of 5 stars big dissappointment, man..........2001-07-17

WARNING! Anybody who's seen "up in smoke" and thinks "hey, lets get some more of that excellent entertainment" - well, think again. Get Out Of My Room is poor, to say the least. Not a single decent joke, no creativity, no running-gags....
