Tom and Dick Smothers hit show-biz pay dirt by exploring the lighter side of brotherly competition in their musical comedy act. Combining substantial folk-singing skills with barbed comic repartee, the Smothers Brothers endeared themselves to "hip" crowds and mainstream audiences alike. That feat was a considerable accomplishment in the '60s, when the recordings that comprise this generous sampler were made. The tracks include such memorable numbers as "Pretoria," "Tom Dooley," "The Saga of John Henry," "Cabbage," "I Talk to the Trees," and, of course, "Mom Always Liked You Best." --Scott SchinderCustomer Reviews:

Take it!.......2007-03-05
Not counting their PLAY IT STRAIGHT album, the Smothers have a catalog of almost 100 tracks. Only one-fifth of their recordings are here, and since this "best of" collection was issued in 1998, the chances are probably slim that a Volume Two or box set will appear anytime soon. That's a real shame, too.
Remastering on this RHINO product is excellent. The CD includes a foldout style booklet with an interesting three-page bio.

A good, inexpensive single-disc compilation of Rundgren singles may not be what the world's been waiting for, but it's a fine thing nonetheless. Largely avoiding the big pretensions of many of his post-Something/Anything? albums, this record distills 15 years of releases into a hits-just-keep-on-coming set which makes sense of the sensibility that produced the bemusedly soulful "Hello It's Me," the straightforwardly sweet "Dream Goes On Forever," and the outright goofy "Bang the Drum All Day." --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:
OLDIES BUT GOODIES.......2007-05-14
Lots of depth and songs that speak to everyone, not just Todd Rundgren fans.......2007-03-17
If you are a casual Todd Rundgren fan this is the album to get. The choice of material is excellent and there is a lot of music here for a low cost that stands up well to repeated listening. I would pat twice the price just to have the two songs I mentioned above. Highly recommended.
TODD RUNDGREN RISES FOR THE OCCASION WITH THIS COMPILATION........2007-03-07
TODD RUNDGREN will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history as being the most modest music artist ever. RUNDGREN never gives himself any credit nor does he give himself a pat on the back when deserved. In reality, RUNDGREN has written, recorded and delivered some of the greatest classic songs in Rock n' Roll history. RUNDGREN would begin his career in the late 60's with a band called NAZZ. However, it would be his solo career that RUNDGREN would strike gold. RUNDGREN would write and record several hits throughout his whole solo career. This compilation album highlights RUNDGREN'S solo period from 1970 to 1985. This compilation album also includes the hits he wrote with the band UTOPIA from 1977 to 1980. This compilation album also includes the 1989 hit single "The Want Of A Nail" recorded with Bobby Womack. In my opinion, "THE VERY BEST OF TODD RUNDGREN" is a true testament of a unheralded genius and a fine fitting tribute to a legendary singer/songwriter that was indeed, ahead of his time.
Now it is time to let the music speak for itself and do all of the talking. This compilation album begins with the legendary mellow Rocker "We Gotta Get You A Woman," the slow beautiful mellow "Be Nice To me," the breathtaking mellow Rocker "I Saw The Light," the forever RUNDGREN trademark mellow Rocker "Hello It's Me," the blistering Rocker "Couldn't I just Tell You," the beautiful mellow Rocker "Just One Victory," the beautiful acoustic soulful "A Dream Goes On Forever," the fast paced sythesized Rocker "Real Man," the beautiful acoustic Rocker "Love Of The Common Man," the beautiful slow soothing RUNDGREN composition that was also a hit for England Dan & John Ford Coley "Love Is The answer," the merciless Rocker "Love In Action," the slow beautiful synthesized song that was also a hit for Rod Stewart "Can We Still Be Friends," the groundbreaking mellow Rocker "The Very Last Time," the circus filled like atmosphere fast paced synthesized mellow Rocker "Bang The Drum All Day," the incredible synthesized fast paced mellow Rocker "Something To Fall Back On" and the danceable synthesized killer Rocker "The Want Of A Nail." May I also add that RUNDGREN really lets loose on this fabulous compilation album. I grew up listening to all of these songs and it felt great listening to them all over again on one disc.
Overall, this is one hell of a compilation album worth seeking further into and cheeking out especially if you are the new and curious beginner for the first time of RUNDGREN'S sound and music.
I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary compilation album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This legendary compilation album has already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. This is one great collection that a serious devout music collector would not want to be without.
In closing, TODD RUNDGREN is here to stay. Rock n' Roll needs a modest artist and entertainer like RUNDGREN to keep Rock n' Roll humble and breathing happily. As of now, RUNDGREN has been touring as a new member with THE CARS. From what I hear, THE CARS have been doing extremely well. I guess that goes to show you that we have not seen or heard the last of RUNDGREN yet. I also anticipate that we will be hearing from RUNDGREN again in the near future soon. So here's to you TODD. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," am I wrong? Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. TODD RUNDGREN RULES. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever In Rock, John L.

This collection gathers 19 of Sherman's humorous story-songs. The comic uses original lyrics and pre-existing tunes to poke fun at television shows and consumer items, to send-up the kids and generally riff on early and mid-'60s American pop culture. On tracks like "Pop Hates the Beatles" and "Crazy Downtown," his subject is the generation gap. "Al 'n Yetta" portrays a TV-dependent couple while "Lotsa Luck" describes the complicated hassles of dealing with faulty TVs and new-fangled tape recorders. Sherman assumed his audience had a little knowledge of history, too. On "Good Advice" and "You Went the Wrong Way, Old King Louie," he sings about inventors and French history, respectively. It's hard to imagine contemporary comedians working the historical beat. "One Hippopatami" is a delightfully goofy festival of wordplay that requires only a love of language and a tolerance for schmaltz. --Fred CisternaCustomer Reviews:

Allan Sherman in glorious STEREO!.......2007-02-18
This reviewer owned six of Sherman's WARNER BROTHERS LPs way back then, and over 40 years later can still sing most of his lyrics (just ask me- I dare you!). Allan Sherman had that sort of effect on you - loving to laugh at his silly songs made folks want to commit them to memory. But, the one thing that wasn't available in the early 60's (as any avid fan will tell you), were STEREO mixes. For some reason, WARNER must have pressed ten times as many monaural copies, so we had to make do with those.
This RHINO records "Best of" has corrected that situation in marvelous fashion. Our favorite Allan Sherman tracks have never sounded so "fine" (a loaded word, when describing Allan's music!). Highlights here are the exuberant "Good Advice," the schlamozzel's theme song "Lotsa Luck," and "Schticks Of One And Half A Dozen Of The Other," which has more bad puns packed into it than any recording in history.
Oh no-- stand back! I feel a song coming on---
"On top of old Smokey, all covered with hair;
Of course I'm referrin'.... to Smokey da Bear..." (oy!)

Muddah Faddah Kindly Disregard Dis Lettah!.......2007-01-31
in doing so, I've added a number of childhood favorites to my collection, especially the perennial, "Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah", the chronicle of a youngster fearful of camp who decides camp isn't so bad by the time the letter is done. This was our family anthem as we set out camping each summer, one that is sure to serve the same function for other families. The songs all are based on well-known, often classical melodies, with Mr. Sherman's lyrics. The humor ranges from silly to hilarious. Some, like the Beatles' number, are dated; some, like "Hello Muddah", are timeless.

Frank Zappa 101. As close as anyone has come to a definitive greatest hits set, Strictly Commercial manages to encapsulate much, if not most, of a career that deliberately defied any such attempts. This is the most accessible single collection of Zappa's music available, containing familiar ditties such as "Don't Eat The Yellow Snow," "Joe's Garage," and the radio hit, "Valley Girl." Those skeptical of his guitar work will most certainly find the included selections, "Sexual Harassment in the Workplace," "I'm the Slimeand," "Muffin Man" to be educational. Excellent for whetting the appetites of potential Zappa fanatics. --Andrew BoscardinCustomer Reviews:

Pros: Get a good diversity of Zappa's music; understand why everyone who listens to him loves him; great place to start if you haven't really heard any other Zappa music.
Cons:
2 of the songs are radio edits; they pick a couple of his pretty bad zappa songs (Be in my Video, Fine Girl); I wish they had some more of the European hits (bobby brown).
Even with the cons it is still worth getting. GO BUY IT!!!!!!!

"Bulbuous Bouffant"
"Hellow Mudduh, Hello Fadduh (A Letter From Camp)"
"Star Trekkin'"
"Ti Kwan Leep/Boot to the Head"
"Marvin, I Love You"
"They're Coming to Take Me Away, Ha-Haaa!"
"Bulbous Bouffant" and "Ti Kwan Leep/Boot to the Head" aren't really songs but are comedy sketches that are just as entertaining as anything done by Monty Python. "Fish Heads" is one of the songs I remember from Radio Ahhs! and in reading the liner notes that are included with the disc, I found out that Bill Muny from LOST IN SPACE fame is one of the two members of the group that sings "Fish Heads". Dr. Demento is largely responsible for Wierd Al Yankovic even having a career, but it's nice to see that on this album the only song by Wierd Al is "Yoda". However, Wierd Al also wrote the introduction to the liner booklet. "The Smoke Off" by Shel Silverstein is probably the most offensive song on the cd because of the cursing and the subject matter (it's about a pot smoking competition). There are a couple other tunes that verge on the edge of vulgarity, but "The Smoke Off" is really the only one that crosses the line.
Overall, this is a good album for anyone looking for some truly original music to own. It's also a good way to introduce people to dementia music and the crazy world of Dr. Demento.

This double live set showcases the peerless calisthenics abilities of the 1988 Zappa big band on a collection of crowd-pleasing favorites, concert staples and cover songs. Zappa's crystalline Stratocaster sound (a far cry from the "squank" of the '70s) highlights some of the most lyrical and inspired solo guitar work of his life. Highlights include an adrenaline charged version of "Zomby Woof" a thoroughly rocking turn at Ravel's Bolero, and a horn arrangement of Jimmy Page's "Stairway to Heaven" guitar solo. --Andrew BoscardinCustomer Reviews:

Some of the best 80s stuff is right here.......2006-02-07
If you've heard the classic 70s albums and aren't so sure about later material, give this a listen. The guitar tone is really amazing. It's pretty much nothing like that dirty wah-wah sound he was known for in the 70s, but it's kind of hard not to love the way it sounds. The band sounds crystal clear on this album. This is a really good 2 CD set.
It is ridiculous and jokey, but that's why it's fun stuff to have on in the background. FZ albums you can listen to intensely while they just play in the background. They're just that intense! But, if you're the type to plunk in a CD and stare at your radio in awe, you probably listen to too much heavy metal and you will probably tire of the jokes. If you can just enjoy fun music and have the patience to mellow out and let the songs sprawl out, you will really love this album.
Definitely check out "Make A Jazz Noise Here" which has all the same great tones but practically no lyrics. It is also a double-cd and comes from this same tour. If you like the jokey stuff, then also check out "Broadway The Hard Way," which ALSO comes from the same tour (man, that was a good tour, eh?) and so has the same great sound, but every song is more of a short goofy pop song. This album which I am currently reviewing is the middle album from that tour and it is the perfect middle ground between the all-joke of the first one and all-instrumental of the third one. Oh, it's pretty darn goofy, but there are some amazing musical passages in there, too. It is The Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life!
Disk 1 - Track 7 to the end........2005-11-04
That said ... the first disk, from track 7 to the end is about as good a musical ride as you'll ever take. Move over Beethoven. The first six songs are for band warm up, and most of the second the disk is fodder for Frank to smirk in his dreams at his goofy followers, but the seven in the middle -- flat out fun, creative, beautiful, inspiring music. Buy this only for this second half of the first set - but cherish the pearl in the swine.

If you haven't yet fallen victim to Oklahoma's favorite ass-whuppin' shock jock, go ahead and let Roy D. Mercer beat you like cornbread batter this time around. Album volume 7 is a great place to start, since it compiles some of Brent Douglas and Phil Stone's funniest sketches of outrageous kvetches. The accusations hurled in these prank calls--a homespun alternative to the obscenities of The Jerky Boys--are classic Roy D., terrorizing a range of unsuspecting folk, from a cemetery custodian, bank clerk, and bowling alley owner to a shoe salesman (ordered to pay the psychiatric bills occasioned by selling girls' shoes to little "Joey Mercer"). With minimal sound effects (including some impressively realistic borborygmi suffered from eating "bad apples"), ol' Roy pursues his victims like Ahab after Moby. The only letdowns are in the anticlimactic candid-camera moments explaining how the callees (surprisingly few of whom have managed to cut Roy off entirely by then) have been set up by their friends. After which, you can be sure, the traitors are going to face some intense ass-whuppin' of their own. Not recommended for those recovering from surgery: there's too high a risk for popping your stitches. --Tom MayCustomer Reviews:

"Greatest Fits" takes some of the best pranks from the first 6 volumes of the "How Big a Boy Are Ya?" series and combines them into one sweet package for the consumate Mercer fan and/or neophyte to enjoy.
Truly the best of the bunch has to be "Bad Apples" where Roy calls a grocer and asks to see if he can get a delivery of certain items due to the fact that he ate a few apples that have left him with a bad case of diarrhea (the sound effects are hilarious enough that even I was left in the floor, as Roy says during the skit, "doubled up with a gut-ache" from laughing so hard). Also great is "Dead Trees" where Roy calls a woman requesting compensation for several trees that died thanks to a herbicide advertised in a newsletter that the woman suggested. But when Roy threatens her with the customary "ass-whuppin", she turns the tables and dares HIM to bring it!
My personal favorite is "Horse Feed", where Roy calls a woman requesting payment over cancelled horse riding groups after one of the horses has a little problem (or should I say a BIG problem)after eating the horse feed from her shop, a fact the shop owner finds hilarious, laughing through the entire phone call. The clincher comes when Roy tells the woman that his wife, Sharon Jean, is "gonna kick [her]ass so hard [she'll]have to clear her throat to fart".
Whether you are a fan of the HBaBAY? series or just getting started in, you definitely need to make room for Greatest Fits into your collection...
