Customer Reviews:
Embarrassingly bad music for people with embarrassingly bad taste.......2006-02-28
While the word "shag" speaks to the sex act, the shag dance is definitely a mood-killer for any normal human being. You've got to see it done to see what a total sexual turn-off this dance is - it's about as sexy as a Texas two-step, yet an entire culture of mediocrity that only exists in the south Atlantic has grown up around this effeminate, laughable Lindy done at warp-speed. It's definitely more embarrassing to witness when performed by a male of the species, but is still pathetic when done by anything with two legs.
Notwithstanding their on-stage outfits of the period, the Beach Boys music of their golden days in the 1960's had much too much class and sophistication to qualify as beach music (plus, you can't shag dance to it), but those unsuspecting people who move to the southeast from other parts of the US or world always assume that is what is meant by "beach music". Maybe that is true in the universe at large, but not in the southeast. Although the great songs of the Drifters and many classic Motown songs have been unfortunately labeled as "beach music" by those involved in the culture, "Carolina Beach Music", more specifically, is much more often than not simply embarrassingly awful music written and performed by bands from the Carolinas, usually aging white men wearing Sansabelt pants and Hawaiian shirts. The Band of Oz, the Embers, the Breeze Band, the Poor Souls, Billy Scott and the Prophets, the Catalinas, the Fantastic Shakers, are but a few of the local bands that make tons of money in the southeast and that could not get arrested off of their home turf. The popularity of this garbage being confined to the Carolinas says alot about the taste of the residents of those two states.

Album Description
Song: "Don't Blame Me" Music by Jimmy McHugh, Lyrics by Dorothy Fields, Performed by Leslie Uggams The Bad and the Beautiful had been set in Hollywood, but Two Weeks in Another Town moved the location to Rome, where washed-up actor Jack Andrus (Douglas) is summoned by his former director (Edward G. Robinson) to assist him on a cheapie for a foreign producer. From there Jack's "two weeks in another town" find him coming to terms with his past through a new web of personal relationships. Although not a sequel to The Bad and the Beautiful, composer David Raksin treated Two Weeks in Another Town as a virtual "part two," reusing several of his themes from the earlier picture, including, briefly, the main theme itself -- for a screening of The Bad and the Beautiful as one of the "former productions" by the new film's characters. Music Composed and Conducted by David Raksin

Very Disappointing.......2004-03-11
A beautiful game, a beautiful show. It is missed in USA........2002-10-02
I believe this to be the most simplistic of Webber & Co.'s musicals and to me, it really works. Twenty people, a bare stage and boundless energy in the singing and dancing give this musical its edge before you start thinking about its politics. It reminded me of how youth is wasted on silly stuff, much in the way WEST SIDE STORY did a two generations ago.
We are not a soccer country. Many Americans know no more about Ireland than what happens on St. Patrick's Day (Green beer?). But we do understand sport, love, sex, loyalty, betrayal and internicine strife. Just image white and black instead of English and Irish, and you might get the picture.
Did I mention that the music is wonderful? Lyrical? Did I mention that the music was "singable" (people left the theatre singing)? Sometimes, we need a little sparkle without the glitz. If I could get away directing this musical with Palestinians and Israelis -- and still make it work (because it would), I would choose this one to direct in any university in America. The London production was that good. The music is that good. The book is that good.
Take back the fangs and listen to the music. Be innocent again, and listen to a simple musical with straightforward motives. I hear that it will never come to the US. Unfortunate. It is surely needed.
If you like musical theatre, buy the CD. If you are inspired when soccer players defy gravity, then imagine such deftness of foot in a musical and buy the CD. If you are curious about England and Ireland, buy the CD. If you want to be conscientious about world events aesthetically recreated, but still want to enjoy something soooo beautiful in its intent and execution, buy the CD. It is worth every cent.
I found it...the worst musical written.......2002-09-21
