4 out of 5 stars Wild and Crazy!.......2001-07-04

4 out of 5 stars A Spike Jones chronology of his earliest records.......1999-01-19

This British import is actually a chronology of Spike's earliest 78s for Bluebird / RCA, from his first recording session in 1941 ("Red Wing") through 1945. Included are his hits ("Cocktails for Two," "Der Fuehrer's Face") and obscure B-sides ("The Covered Wagon Rolled Right Along," "Leave the Dishes In the Sink"). Spike's band was in its prime during this time, making for a good collection. Editing is good, especially joining the six parts of "The Nutcracker Suite." But note that the source material is scratchy 78s!

If timing is everything, then it was doubly so in the music of Spike Jones. Whoopee-cushion horns, gunshots, belches, malapropisms--each element of Jones's parodies fell just right, which is amazing considering that his peak came before the advent of tape allowed for careful editing. Jones and his City Slickers--a group that included the likes of Doodles Weaver and Sir Frederic Gas--engaged themselves in at least as much rebellion against "good" music as did the rock & rollers who followed. In the post-Prohibition love song "Cocktails for Two," for instance, the band is the bunch of drunken revelers a table away. Jones label mates Homer and Jethro deliver one of his most indelible screeds against the highbrow on "Pal-Yat-Chee," while all the most gruesome possibilities of "My Old Flame" are realized in a Peter Lorre impersonation by Paul Frees. The closest modern-day analog to this stuff is perhaps "Weird Al" Yankovic's work, but no one did more to depreciate notes, chords, and pretensions than Jones. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Something's wrong with the orchestra!.......2007-05-14

Spike Jones was the leader of the most successful novelty band of the pre-rock and roll era. He made many hilarious records, and this collection features 40 of them. This is seriously funny stuff, and anyone who is into musical comedy needs to get it.

4 out of 5 stars An Alternative Listing.......2007-05-12

5 out of 5 stars Great music gets Spiked.......2007-03-01

RHINO's SPIKE JONES ANTHOLOGY is a comprehensive and hilarious gathering of some of the best City Slickers 1940s and early '50s recordings. With a body of work as extensive as that of Spike Jones, naturally individual favorites might have gotten overlooked, yet no other Jones/Slickers album of this size contains so many super tracks. Sound quality is excellent on these 78 record to digital transfers. A highly informative 52-page booklet completes the package. For all lovers of zany music. Highest recommendation.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent anthology, a few weak tracks.......2004-10-25

During his career and for 20 years after, Spike Jones was criticized as much as he was enjoyed for his crude satires and often puerile humor. But there was a lot more to Spike than just inane humor--his City Slickers were crack musicians who could literally play in any style from Dixieland to classical with the correct figuration.

This collection centers around his most popular recordings for RCA with a few fillers chosen by Dr. Demento. Some of these fillers are excellent, such as "The Sheik of Araby," "Clink Clink Polka," "Jones Polka" and the very rare "By the Beautiful Sea." Others, like "Ya Wanna Buy a Bunny?," "Wyatt Earp Makes Me Burp" and the track from the Spike Jones Spooktacular, are quite simply childish with no real musical appeal. I would much rather have had "Chinese Mule Train," "MacNamara's Band" and the hysterically funny "Drip, Drip, Drip [Sloppy Lagoon]" in their place.

The transfers are superb. I had some of these records on the original 78s and can vouch that this is EXACTLY how they sounded. The liner notes are likewise excellent, with complete documentation, rare photos and original record labels (though the record labels are awfully dark and hard to read). Overall, highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Spike for outsiders.......2003-01-30

Although this compilation only gets you into the RCA recordings, it's one of the very rare WELL DOCUMENTED albums. This one is an absolute must, along with the "Spiked" album. Yeah!
