Distilling Iggy Pop's work down to 17 songs is nearly impossible. Anyone with an interest in Mr. Pop should first pick up the Stooges albums before exploring his later solo years. This collection, however, includes enough highlights to satisfy a casual fan. The Stooges are lightly covered with the essential punk anthem "I Wanna Be Your Dog" and the manic "Search and Destroy." The inclusion of the slinking "Sick of You" is a nice touch. Pop's pop leanings pop up with "Nightclubbing," "China Girl," and "Lust for Life," tracks in which the guitars are toned down a notch and Iggy exhibits a slightly more mellow side. Of course, he ultimately returns with a vengeance befitting one of rock's original wild men. --Rob O'Connor

5 out of 5 stars Iggy at his best!.......2007-05-22

All the Iggy songs that get stuck in your head in one place. The possibility of scaring your coworkers with your music is a definite bonus.

5 out of 5 stars An essential purchase...........2006-06-06

..if you are a complete DORK! Iggy Pop changed his name from James Osterberg when he found out he was too dumb to spell it correctly. He was also a member of The Stooges but that group was never the same after Curley died.

Be that as it may, they included a few Stooges tracks here... but the first half of the cd is pretty much disposable.

It gets better after, and including, 'Real Wild Child'. That's when Iggy tried to be Bowie, who is another useless blight on the landscape of rock'n'roll. Bowie, like others of limited talent, kept reinventing his "image" because that's ALL he could sell to a gullible public. He had NO talent for music whatsoever. Iggy is pretty much the same. He resorts to exposing his genitals on stage, and he only has credibilty with overly simplistic village idiots. Mr. Pop even made an album called, quite appropriately, "The Idiot".

There are about half a dozen half-decent tracks on this compilation but all-in-all, it's one big yawn. Buy it if you are not too bright. I mean, they say "A fool and his money are soon parted."...why should YOU break that cycle??

2 out of 5 stars Overrated........2005-03-17

I never really saw what was so great about Iggy Pop.

He was hyper and screamed. so what? So does my two year old son.

3 out of 5 stars embarrassing evidence of how aging causes one to suck.......2005-01-09

When I got this album, I truly thought that Iggy Pop was the perfect candidate for a greatest hits compilation. He's got a dozen decent hits scattered across a dozen mediocre albums, and it would seem logical that gathering those songs together would produce one nearly perfect album.

How wrong I was. Instead, by sequencing these 17 songs in chronological order, "Nude & Rude" just provides a handy step-by-step guide for charting Iggy Pop's mortifying decline from Detroit wildman to crapola alt-rock crooner. Some of these songs are outright embarrassing. "Kill City" borders on arena rock parody, and "Home"--the second single of Iggy's comeback "Brick by Brick"--is excrutiating. Listening to Iggy croon "home boy, home boy" is agony. The folky duet "Candy" is still a guilty pleasure, but "Real Wild Child"--arguably the biggest hit of Iggy's career--has fittingly become the theme song of Carnival Cruise Lines, where middle-aged porkers saddle up at all-you-can-eat buffet, before enjoying Kathie Lee Gifford on the ledo deck.

Some of the best songs here are still the one's David Bowie wrote. "Lust for Life", "Nightclubbing", and "China Girl" all hold up nicely as perfect pop songs. Ironically, however, it's Bowie's mediocre mix of "Search & Destroy" and "Gimme Danger" present here, instead of the far superior remix that Iggy issued later.

2 out of 5 stars For the most part , this is TRASH.......2004-11-11

I spun this disk only a few times before I decided to sell it back. This is mostly just trashy, unexciting rock n'roll without much in the way of decent songwriting. I might've held onto it to hear "Lust for Life," but that song has lost most of its swaggering power since it's become commercialized.

I also might've held on to this disk if it had my favorite Iggy track "Repo Man" which should've been in this collection. Alas, it's not and I just can't be bothered with the rest. I guess I'll just go get the "Repo Man" soundtrack which is far more enjoyable than this dreck. =)

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not Big-D-and-the-Kids-Table good.......2007-07-25

With their previous full-length release, How It Goes, Big D and the Kids Table set the bar pretty high. Although a few of the tracks, like "Shining On," are outstanding, Strictly Rude falls short of the standard fans have come to expect from the band.

The highlight of the album is its first four tracks, which are catchy, energetic, and grow more infectious with each listen. By the middle of the album, however, some momentum is lost with minor-key dub tracks like "Deadpan," "Snakebite," and the title track, "Strictly Rude," which would seem to have fit more comfortably on Salem Girls.

The album finishes strongly enough some very good tracks, like "Try Out Your Voice," "Fly Away," "Raw Revolution," "The One," and "She Knows Her Way," mixed in with some less-than-mediocre tracks, like "Breaking the Bottle" and "Relocate the Beat."

The lyrics on many of the album's songs seem either too personal and anecdotal or too vague and unspecific for the average listener to relate to, and as a whole, the album feels overproduced. The horn lines are less prevalent and catchy than in previous albums, and don't really carry the melody on any of the songs, which many fans of their work will find to be a letdown. Nevertheless, it is worth checking out if you are a long-time fan of the band or just getting into the genre.

4 out of 5 stars Definitely a step up.......2007-07-03

referring to the review above...DOESNT SOUND LIKE REEL BIG FISH!!?!?!??! OH NOES!

anyways...this album is definitely my favorite Big D album, and has, to me at least, revitalized ska for me, since there are so few good new ska bands out these days, since streetlight isnt gonna come out with their new album in at least 239084923974 years.

definitely slower in some areas, and a little less punk and more reggae and dub. but theres still certain song that are straight up punk/ska, like noise complaint.

the songwriting is really great, and overall its just a good album

5 out of 5 stars Best Big D album to date!.......2007-06-18

You don't have to be from Boston to appreciate this cd. Big D has matured both musically and lyrically on "Strictly Rude". I love it more each time I listen to it. "Steady Riot", "Noise Complaint", "Snakebite", "Strictly Rude", and "She Knows Her Way" are real stand-outs.This cd is a must for Summer 2007, esp. if you love ska and reggae. Play it at your house party or backyard BBQ. Big D are even better live -they outshine all the other bands with whom they play and are really fun to watch- without question. Check them out on the upcoming Warped tour.

5 out of 5 stars Big D brings it!.......2007-04-24

This solid 3rd-wave ska record cements Big D in the Boston music pantheon (as if they weren't already somewhat revered). Bringing elements of their punk roots, dope ska and classic reggae and dub, "Strictly Rude" is a solid party album not to be missed. From angst and politcal railings of tunes like "Snakebite" and "Raw Revolution" to fun party jumpers like "Noise Complaint" and "Shining On," the band has grown musically, the song writing just gets better and better, and the instrumentation and horn arrangements are flawless.

Must have for fans of ska!

Rec-room rock stars can rejoice knowing that drum and guitar solos, long thought extinct in the post-grunge era, are alive, well, and flourishing in the hands of speed-metal granddaddies Megadeth. Seriously, Rude Awakening, the band's first-ever live set, is almost certain to benefit from renewed interest sparked by the reissue of their spruced-up debut, Killing Is My Business. . . and Business Is Good. That album, like most in Megadeth's canon, is quoted here ("Mechanix"). The band also revisits So Far, So Good. . . So What ("Hook in Mouth"), Peace Sells. . . But Who's Buying ("Peace Sells"), The World Needs a Hero ("Return to Hangar"), Countdown to Extinction ("Symphony of Destruction," "Sweating Bullets"), Youthanasia ("Train of Consequences"), Rust in Peace ("Hangar 18"), and Cryptic Writings ("Almost Honest"). Fanned across two discs, Rude Awakening's 24 tracks capture Dave Mustaine and cohorts in top form--lightning fast, muscular, nihilistic, urgent, and, of course, very, very angry--with crowd noise kept to a bearable minimum. --Kim Hughes

5 out of 5 stars Megadeth rule in style on Rude Awakening.......2007-08-01

Rude Awakening (2002.), a Megadeth live concert DVD/CD release

Thrash metal gods Megadeth have enjoyed a long and glittering career. Over that time Dave Mustaine and Co. have gained a great reputation for putting on an excellent live act. However, prior to the 2001-02 `World Needs A Hero' album tour, Megadeth was yet to release a full concert on DVD. Enter 2002's `Rude Awakening' DVD which shows the band in action at a concert in Arizona. Put simply, this is a concert DVD that any Megadeth fan should own. It is a fantastic snapshot of a legendary band on top live form. Granted, you're initial thoughts may be negative about the DVD given that the line-up in action is not the `classic' line-up that featured Marty Friedman and Nick Menza. However, this couldn't be further from the truth as quartet consisting of Dave Musitaine, Dave Ellefson on bass, Al Pitrelli on guitar and Jimmy DeGrasso on drums have great chemistry and perform as a solid unit.

This DVD is an awesome package (note I recommend the DVD for this over the CD version). Not only is there full footage of the concert but there is also band interviews, studio footage of the band recording `The World Needs A Hero' and some bonus live footage. The bonus live footage is especially great as it shows an excellent small underground live set that the band did, the highlights being a punchy performance of out-take classic `Angry Again' and another beautiful version of `A Tout Le Monde'. Returning to the main bulk of the DVD which is the live Arizona concert, there are many reasons why this release is a winner. Firstly, Dave Mustaine's performance at the forefront of the band speaks volumes. Dave never says too much to the crowd whilst on stage but then again he doesn't need to as he possesses a large amount of performance charisma and intensity that keeps the crowd drawn into the music. His vocals are excellent throughout the concert. Al Pitrelli will surprise many who watch this DVD who don't know of his ability on the guitar. He plays many of the band's solos like he's been a member of the group since they began and he trades off plenty of solos and melodies with Mustaine effortlessly. Mustaine himself comments in the interviews how good a guitarist Al is. Dave Ellefson is excellent on the bass and shows why he's been such a vital member of Megadeth through the years. Jimmy DeGrasso gives an insane, brutal and inspired performance on the drums which adds plenty of fireworks to the Megadeth sound.

The set list selection for the concert is a very strong one, mixing all parts of the band's career. Every album up to `The World Needs A Hero' is represented by at least one song except for the forgettable `Risk' album. I could talk all day about each song but instead I'll say what tracks were for me the highlights. `In My Darkest Hour' is performed with great emotion and intensity by the band making it a true stirring performance of the Megadeth classic. The band play an awsome extended version of `She-Wolf' which involves some amazing guitar trade off from Mustaine and Pitrelli that never lose interest or flair. Jimmy DeGrasso's drum solo to finish is MENTAL and sounds brilliant. `Hangar 18' and `Return To Hangar' are performed with power and finesse in vintage Megadeth style. Dave gives his usual speech about the `Mechanix' song before blasting out a high energy version of that timeless classic. The version of `Hook In Mouth' is excellent and the finishing songs in `Peace Sells' and `Holy Wars' make for full out headbanging!

Buying Megadeth's `Rude Awakening' is definitely money well spent in my book. Any Megadeth fan should own this; it is another viewing of a band that are true metal legends. This is a final snapshot of Megadeth before the temporary split due to Mustaine's hand injury and marks an excellent swansong to one chapter in Megadeth's career. I'd highly recommend this DVD as well as the recently released `That One Night In Buenos Aires' which shows the current Megadeth line-up in action on the `System Has Failed Tour'.

MY RATING: 9/10

4 out of 5 stars A great deal, but there are a couple things to complain about.......2006-02-05

Before I get into this review, let me say you are getting a great deal for what you pay. 2 discs full of (well, partially full of) classic Megadeth. This cd has great sound quality and a few cool places in between songs where Dave talks, however brief they may be. It is also cool how the two new guys step up and deliver all the classics with the same power as the Marty and Menza.

Now some of the bad things. The songs selection is just ok in my opinion. They play a lot off of The World Needs a Hero, which is understandable considering thats what they're touring. It's actually a very good album, but I thought they chose a lot of the wrong ones. Burning Bridges and 1000 Times Goodbye really aren't special. Off of Cryptic Writings they take Trust, She-Wolf, and Almost Honest. ALmost Honest should not be on here, and on the other two Mustaine has a little vocal trouble, he just sounds off. She Wolf does have sweet guitar and drum solos at the end though, making it well worth listening to. Other than A Tout Le Monde, it seems like Mustaine also has trouble singing the tracks from Youthanasia too. During Train of Consequences he forgets the words and mumbles.

Some of the best tracks include Hangar 18, Return to Hangar, Mechanix, Dread and the Fugitive Mind, and everything off Peace Sells. The best track though, which surprised me, is Hook In Mouth hands down. It is performed just like it is on the album.
Once again, this is a great deal for what you're paying, and though there are a few lyrical mess-ups, it's the only live Megadeth CD out there, and therefore a must have for any Deth fan.

One other thing. There's a half-cd/half-dvd version. Don't buy it. You lose half the songs when you can really just go pick this and the full length DVD up seperately for a better price.

5 out of 5 stars Great live album.....but where's the countdown?.......2005-07-22

Megadeth's sound on this live album was superb, and included much of their best work........but where is "Countdown to Extinction"? That's my favorite MD song!

5 out of 5 stars Rude Awakening.......2004-12-14

This is a great cd or dvd for any megadeth fan. It gives you a little taste of Megadeth Live! Must get for any hard rock fan!

4 out of 5 stars Mustaine Not Mellow Live Either.......2004-02-26

This double live album and apparent send off for one of thrash metal's giants shows why they should be(and usually are)respected as true metal stalwarts. Leader Dave Mustaine's fiery tongue and trademark riffing are on full display in too numerous places to mention. Newer songs like "Dread..." and "Return To Hangar" sound just as menacing and accusatory as older chesnuts like "Mechanix" and the band's long time credo "Peace Sells." Lead guitarist Al Pitrelli adds his own spark while reproducing the classic lines of "Wake Up Dead" and "Ashes..." The musicianship and mind of Mustaine is stellar and still full of life after 20 long years and this disc shows that. While his band may never have reached the pinnacle of popularity Metallica enjoyed, that in no way makes Megadeth any less important. And I'm sure Dave would be the first to tell you.

Big Cock should be the biggest rock band on the planet. I think a name change could help that as nobody in their right mind will ever say the name on the radio or TV. I love every song on this CD and Robert Mason is a great singer and front man. There is no lack of attitude on this CD and these guys walk it like they talk it.

This is an absolutley amazing album. Not one bad song. All melodic 80's inspired, inuendo packed, hard rockin' sing along songs. A must have. I heard about it on the net at Sleezerocks.com and then on the www.hairballjohn.com net radio show. These guys don't let you down...EVER.
I crank this one to 11 in my car and I can sing along with them all.

Took me back to the '70's and all the soul searching of Janis's early stuff... peaceful moods, deep thoughts - ; Dolly Parton duet just lovely!

5 out of 5 stars Print of Palm on the Pillow.......2004-05-12

"Billie's Bones" continues the creative streak for Janis Ian who is repeatedly hitting artistic heights. Four songs on the set comprise a bit of a travelogue. The most familiar for me is a song I fell in love with on Joan Baez's 1992 CD "Play Me Backwards." Janis writes "Amsterdam" with Buddy Mondlock who recently worked with Art Garfunkel & Maia Sharp on the gorgeous "Everything Waits to Be Noticed" CD. Janis marries a particularly haunting melody with intricate lyrical images, "Just the scent of perfume on the linen, just the print of a palm on the pillow, just the hint of the moon from the window, Amsterdam." "Paris In Your Eyes" boasts a romantically drenched lyric with a soft acoustic melody, "Every time I touched you, I could taste a breath of spring." Another stop on Janis' travelogue is the excellent instrumental "Marching on Glasgow." The last song with a geographic title reference is "My Tennessee Hills" with Dolly Parton's lovely supporting vocal. The most powerful song for me combines a Billie Holiday "Strange Fruit" jazz-blues approach to the death of Matthew Shepard, "What makes a man a man? The cut of a coat, the hint of a tan? It's not who you love, but whether you can, What makes a man a man." On "Save Somebody" Janis' distinctive melody combines with an incredibly poetic lyric, "There's a crack in the heavens & a tear in the sky; it cuts through the shadows living in her eyes." Janis' tribute to Mary Black is quite lovely. If one measured the creative high points of Janis Ian's career, an appropriate metaphor would be the Andes Mountains. This is another exquisite set by one of our master musicians. Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars Make No Bones About It!.......2004-04-16

Okay, I'll admit it. I've been a Janis Ian devotee since I was a teenager identifying with her infamous "At Seventeen." Every time Janis is in town, I make it a point to see her concert. There is not one person in all of the music industry, in any genre, who even compares. Janis has it all. She is the quintessential renaissance talent. Her songwriting gift outshines in every possible genre. Her guitar playing is above and beyond the best in rock, jazz and blues. Her tender vocals express the pain and joy in every lyric line. And with "Billie's Bones," Janis has once again risen to the occasion on every track. As a followup album to her "Live Without A Net" CD (also a must buy), "Billie's Bones" speaks to all ages.

There simply isn't a better songwriter to be found. Janis makes every word count. Every note rings true.

If you think you know Janis Ian, she proves that there's much more to discover. If you've never heard Janis Ian, buy "Billie's Bones" and "Live Without A Net." And then get thee to her next concert for an amazing performance!

I guarantee you that once you've experienced Janis Ian's music, you will be moved by the power of her talents.

5 out of 5 stars Poetry becomes music.......2004-04-09

On my first listen to "Billie's Bones" I wondered, "Where's the punch?" It was a nice enough listen, but I wasn't struck by my usual awe that Janis Ian inspires. So I listened again...this time really listened and I ended the CD thinking that this is the most consistently powerful, creative writing I've heard from her (or anyone) in years. The writing is extraordinary. There are too many perfect lines from too many songs on this album for me to elaborate. Briefly stated: this album should be used as a teaching guide for high school and college students who need to hear written thought reduced to a few exquisite words.

5 out of 5 stars Astonising.......2004-04-06

I don't know how to encourage people to purchase this album. I can only say that it is astonishing.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Sub Noize releases of all time!.......2005-11-23

Re-Invention by Too Rude is without question one of the greatest Sub Noize albums of all time. It is great from start to finish with an excellent mix of aggressive guitars and irie sounds. Dogboy and company definitely brought their A game with this great album. Favorite songs are Tribal War, Local Dub, Sick Mind, Re-Invention, and Good Day To Die. I highly recommend that everyone get this album. It is one of those most have albums if you don`t have it.

5 out of 5 stars The is the Best Album Ever Created.......2004-11-10

Robbie (Dog Boy) puts his heart and soul into every track on this album and it tells the story of a lost soul in Hermosa Beach, CA. The album is made up of pretty much every sound you can think of from Reggae to Hiphop to Rock to Blues to ALL THAT JAZZ. Just give this a try and if it's not the BEST album you've ever heard, you can kick me. ~beth.

5 out of 5 stars One OF A Kind!! Dog Boy and Co. at their best!!.......2004-10-30

This is one of the greatest albums of recent memory. It is a stark departure from the debut album that was released on Sub Noize a couple years back. The thing about this album is that it came out a year ago when they released it by themselves but they came back to put it out on Sub Noize where they belong.
This album blends punk, rock, and reggae perfectly. Lead singer Dog Boy refers to it as one drop punk. This album has everything from straight up fast punk with The Distance and Got Nothing To Defend to the slower, reggae songs such as 421, Slow Burn, and Addict Like Me. But the best songs are the ones that are mixed perfectly with rock, punk and reggae. Good Day To Die is the best song on the album, with a story that you can't beat. Get this album today. You will not regret it. And remember Dog Boy and Too Rude is back and nothing can stop their musical force.

    1 out of 5 stars Wack!.......2004-11-17

What can i say, this cd is wack. Words cant describe how bad this cd really is. Take your money and burn it if you got money to burn. I still cant believe how wack this cd is. ITS HORRIBLE!!!!

1 out of 5 stars Weak and Lame.......2004-10-27

    This cd is horrible.
Too Rude is reggae at its weakest.
Bass lines are weak and the lyrics are lame.
This guy has no talent and cant make a good song.

2 out of 5 stars dont buy this.......2004-03-27

i have this cd, i listened to it several times through, and came to the conclution that it was a waste of money. It sounds to me that the singer is trying to be someone else. he talks about being arested, smoking weed and things of this fashion so much and so un poeticly that it just sounds like an image push. The music arangements are good, but leave you wanting to tell the band that their not the wailers, and the singer should stop trying to sound like bob marley. Bottom line, take it if someone wants to give it to you,but dont spend money on it. learn from my mistake

5 out of 5 stars Great voice = Great Music.......2003-02-04

If you like Sublime and Long Beach Shortbus then hit the button and get this cd. He has his own unique style that should not be missed. Check it out and buy this cd along with the new Long Beach Shortbus CD (great new music from Eric Wilson of Sublime).

Back in the day, there were what was called race records and these records weren't censored the way that the ones that "decent" folks purchased were so a lot of dirty blues got recorded and released. This collection puts together a pretty extensive sampling of these "Early American Party Records". Wait'll the kids go to bed. It's a tradition.
