5 out of 5 stars Relaxing Ocean sounds.......2007-05-18

Great Cd for relaxation. Soft, repetitive surf sounds and wave action, no blaring foghorns.

5 out of 5 stars Ocean Surf, nature sounds audio cd.......2007-05-13

Dan Gibson consistently mastered, if not invented the art of nature recordings. This is not a music CD. Mr. Gibson used a very sensitive directional microphone and sat still like a guru while nature spoke. Not so easy--think about how frequently planes fly over our heads. Yet, this is not another noisy, monotonous hissing ocean recording either. Throughout, it is consistently relaxing as well as rich with almost visual detail. It is not distracting for massage, meditation, relaxation, sleeping, etc. unless it is played too loudly. However, turn up the volume while hanging out at home and it can transform your landlocked condo into a beachfront bungalow.

3 out of 5 stars Annoying rocks.......2007-01-17

The sound of the surf is what I was looking for but the added trickle of the water movement amound the tide pools is not restful in fact they are down right annoying.

5 out of 5 stars PURE OCEAN; use this with Deep Breathing! Therapy for the Soul.......2006-12-11

This Dan Gibson CD is one I use to teach deep, diaphragmatic breathing...the tempo is good if you use one breath in, with one wave, and one breath out, with the second wave. This is very helpful for relaxation and for breathing practice for Anxiety disorders. There are no annoying "extra noises" like seagulls, foghorns, boat motors, or otherwise extraneous distractions. What you get is Pure Ocean Waves...something quite difficult to find in the "ocean" of SFX and "relaxation CD's" out there. Slightly over an hour long, you can use this for one great calming break. No music in this one either, JUST the waves resounding a crash, trickle, smooth movement. If you can't relax with this one, we should talk!!

5 out of 5 stars lovely.......2006-11-12

lovely recording-- didn't help my baby sleep as i had hoped, but nothing does.

This is just what I was looking for, just surf and seagull sounds, very relaxing when I am so missing the ocean

5 out of 5 stars Peaceful Ocean Surf.......2006-03-13

I listen to this CD when I'm getting a massage or just relaxing outside. I've also found it helpful as a calming agent when I'm having a difficult day at work. The ocean sounds are very peaceful and relaxing after a hard day at work also.

4 out of 5 stars peaceful sounds.......2006-03-01

The sound of the ocean tide is a great way to wake up. I use this CD in my alarm clock. Works great.

1 out of 5 stars Peaceful Ocean Surf.......2005-11-22

Do not buy this CD to relax or sleep. Screeching gulls & fog horns override the sounds of ocean surf. Instead buy Echoes of Nature, Ocean Waves. This CD really works.

4 out of 5 stars Cool.......2005-08-06

This CD is cool because I like to perform reflexology and I think it makes my mom relax when I do that.

5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

This is not background noise--it's too naturally beautiful to ignore. So it's great for meditation or sleeping babies (or individual yoga, but not group classes).

Album Description

Embark on a musical journey into the mysterious and forbidden land of vampires, werewolves and witches. This powerful, eerie and darkly romantic soundscape offers 21 tracks of symphonic orchestrations, gothic choirs and haunting sound effects, inspired by Bram Stoker's classic novel, Dracula.

5 out of 5 stars NOX ARCANA THE ULTIMATE MOODLIFTER.......2007-06-27

Theres not enough words to put down on what this group means to me....I wirte some of my best works by their music.

4 out of 5 stars Vampire country.......2007-05-10

Books don't usually have soundtracks. "Dracula" definitely didn;t.

But when listening to Nox Arcana's "Transylvania," all I could think of was Bram Stoker's quintessential vampire, and the hauntingly creepy atmosphere of the book. The band forms plenty of rich neoclassical tunes, around a hazy storyline about (what else?) vampires.

It opens with a creepy organ, some smooth violins sweeping up from behind. A deep voice intones, "Darkness descends upon the land, wrap the world in night's black embrace... the restless dead stir within their ancient tombs, and creatures born of shadow rise to quench their savage hunger..." Imagine Bela Lugosi rising from a coffin.

It's followed up by some warmup songs -- the darkly enticing "Voyage," which expands out into an epic, eerie sweep, and the ghostly piano of "Gossamer Mist." The songs that follow are just as richly imagined -- ghostly fast-paced strings, magnificently dark organ and grim gypsy music, laced with church bells, shimmering vocals and ghostly little breezes.

Listening to "Transylvania" is like walking slowly through a cobwebbed, shadowy castle, and listening to Dracula playing a pipe organ in a dusty ballroom, with his brides singing accompaniment. It's not too hard to imagine that you're Jonathan Harker, after hearing songs like "Echoes From the Crypt."

Their music is an lush dusty tapesty of gothic instrumentation. Rich, hollow organ, shimmering harp, strings both windy and rapid, fast-moving percussion, a delicate piano, and some dark shimmers of keyboard all blend together into haunting slow-turning melodies. And as if that weren't good enough, they sprinkle the music with the flutter of bat wings, church bells, ghostly murmurs, and delicate music-box tinkles.

Fortunately Nox Arcana doesn't wreck all this eerie atmosphere with typical singing. Instead we get the occasional deep-voiced intonations, sort of like the introduction. And there are some delicate female vocals -- they murmur softly one minute, only to rise into echoing, wordless solos the next. It's absolutely stunning.

Nox Arcana's "Transylvania" does a brilliant job of capturing the ideal vampire-gothic atmosphere -- creepy and beautifully refined, with no kitschiness. The ideal soundtrack to Bram Stoker's classic (not to mention Halloween).

5 out of 5 stars This soundtrack drains your blood dry, it's that awsome!.......2007-01-28

I have this one, its great. It's not only good for Halloween but its good for when you go to sleep at night, it actually puts you into another realm of dreams and nightmares. It helps you sleep and not only that, it gives you something to relax your body with. It's very good for one of those stormy and rainy or snowy nights. I am an artist and I use it to create monster theme pictures and other creepy drawings. It helps me put myself in that state of mind were I can listen to this and let my imagination flow. If you like this one you will really love the CARNIVAL OF LOST SOULS, WINTER KNIGHT. I still have to get the winter knight one. These soundtracks are classics, not that many peopl listen to them. They are for the soul purpose to escaping the real world and entering another of the bizzare and strange. They are just good to listen too, when ever you feel like it. But this is a good tool for some people who have trouble sleeping at night. But if you listen to the children of the night, and what lovely music they made, you will deffently get your money's worth on all 3 cd's Translyvania, Winter Knight, Carnival of lost Souls... It's worth it.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Halloween Fare.......2006-11-01

You can hear a constant improvement in the musical quality of Nox Arcana's CD. This one, particularly, is a big step over Necronomicon. Not that Necronomicon is bad, but Transylvania is really good.
I'm glad I found Nox Arcana (quite by accident, I did a search for Halloween on Amazon and this was one of the hits) they are a treasure.

5 out of 5 stars Yet another great album!.......2006-08-11

Nox Arcana is truly a original band for the era. The music is never boring and you always find something new when listening to it that you may not have heard before. Vargo is a very gifted artist in all the work he does and I for one am glad he formed his own band. The creative work behind the cd's really comes through not just in the music but in the album designs. Midnight Syndicate lost one of the most creative person's behind their success, but by starting the band Nox Arcana at least none of the fans are suffering. Keep up the great work and I look forward to the next album.

We ordered this cd for our boston terriers -- we want them to get used to hearing other dogs bark (so they won't bark at other dogs in the neighborhood anymore). The cd has many different sounds; great dog barking. It took a little bit to arrive but it was in really good shape.

Album Description

Out of print for nearly five years, "Telephono" and "Soft Effects" are presented here re-mastered in one specially priced deluxe package with an added video and beautifully restored artwork. With amped-up acoustic guitars, jumpy song structures, and a punk attitude, "Telephono" (1996) was the shot across the bow from Austin's fledgling rock heroes. The follow-up, "Soft Effects" (1997), features five of Spoon's strongest songs and marks a leap forward in the band's repertoire, signaling the great things to come on subsequent Spoon albums.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Telephono.......2007-05-14

I remember seeing Spoon mentioned on a forum I frequent a few months ago, but I never looked into it until a few weeks ago when I saw this album-and-EP in the local record store. I'm a big fan of EP releases. So I did my usual thing: bittorrent it, sit down, and listen. I started with the EP, but I wasn't all that impressed so I continued on to the album expecting the same. But I was delighted at how good it sounded to me. I have since bought the bulk of Spoon's back catalogue and really enjoy all of it, but Telephono is probably my favorite.

I instantly recognized the Pixies influence with songs like "Dismember", and Spoon does the influence justice. The lyrics aren't brilliant, but they fit. The vocals more than make up for it. The guitar riffs are solid throughout. The first two tracks are probably my favorites, and "Primary" is a great song that doesn't last nearly long enough, but there are not any weak moments on the album.

I'll admit I get just a little bored of Telephono about halfway through, as it isn't as dynamic as I would like, but track 11 - Theme To Wendel Stivers - is a solid instrumental that puts enough steam back into Telephono to plow through the final tracks with nearly the same force as it started.

Telephono is loud, moody, and energetic. I wouldn't want to listen to it all the time - one spin is about all I can take of it, but it keeps finding its way into my CD player about two or three times a week. I find that it best suits driving, especially commuting. I would also recommend Pixies' Doolittle and Spoon's A Series Of Sneaks.

5 out of 5 stars I'm grateful that music like this exists........2007-03-10

Once or twice every 15 years I hear an outstanding rock songwriter (Ray Davies, Robert Pollard,)- it's an exciting energizing feeling. And it's also a feeling like, "I'm gonna have a listening relationship with this artist for a long time." That's the feeling I got when I heard the songs of Britt Daniel (who has an extremely compelling charismatic singing voice. He let's it all out on this one! Shouting, screaming, singing melodies from a raw place.)

This CD (and EP)are his early efforts and, although rawer than later Spoon songs, it rocks with attitude, excitement, honesty, and some killer pop hooks (e.g. track 5 "Nefarious".) The songs on "Telephono" have jumpy song structures, some girl-boy harmonies, soft-loud dynamics and I was blasting it while driving in my car today. I actually thanked God for letting me hear this CD. That's how grateful I am to have had this recording come into my hands (and ears). I love it.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible remastering job! Buy the originals!.......2006-07-28

This remaster is one of the worst I have heard in a long time! I am surprised Spoon and Merge let this thing be released like this! I have the original versions of Telephono and Soft Effects and they sound much better! The new remasters sound a lot clearer BUT the treble is way too high. I can not even listen to it at anything more than a quiet volume. Both new cds are this way. I am a huge advocate of remasters if they are done properly. These are some of the worst remasters I have ever heard. I have listened to this on my home system, my car system and my computer and all of them have the same problem. I know this is a mastering issue. Maybe Merge should try a different mastering lab and/or engineer. I am pretty upset about this as I waited a long time to get this set in a remastered form.

4 out of 5 stars Telephono me.......2006-07-27

One of the unfortunate things about the amazing Spoon is that their best works tend to drop out of sight every now and then. This was the case with debut album "Telephono" and EP "Soft Effects," both of which have been unavailable except at hideous used prices.

Well, until now. Now both have been reissued together, and now listeners can hear the full scope of Spoon's spare, rough-edged rock'n'roll goodness. Both the EP and the debut aren't quite perfect, but they are good enough to deserve plenty of repeated listening, alongside Spoon's other works.

"Telephono" asserts itself from the very beginning, with the outstanding riffs and blistering rhythms of "Don't Buy the Realistic," with lots of hooks and Pixieish flavor, and frontman Britt Daniels singing rather simplistic lyrics about taking his hand. "Not Turning Off" ups the ante with its slow-burning bass-rock.

They continue the same sort of sound, with catchy melodies that are similar, but not so much that any of them sound alike. Expect racing drums'n'guitar, a relatively slow and melancholy number about "f**cking torture... nefarious," the hard-rock explosions, and the pulse-racing bass-rock. It doesn't slow down for even one song, thank God.

And then there's "Soft Effects." It opens with the slow, blazing rocker "Mountains to Sound," and then proceeds to guitar-edged powerpop, quavering indie with little synthy shivers, and stormy fuzz-rock. It would probably be among Spoon's best ever, if it were twice the size it is.

One of Spoon's biggest appeals is that they are unpretentious musically -- especially in these two, when they were just starting in the music biz. Often you can tell what quality a band has by their debut -- and Spoon showed the promise that later made "Girls Can Tell" and "Kill the Moonlight" so good. You can tell just by listening.

The music here is raw and relatively unpracticed, like a diamond that hasn't been cut and polished yet. They mellowed out substantially in future releases. But it's also sincere and exploding with enthusiasm. These guys pack the entire album with blistering guitar riffs and tightly coiled basslines, which practically erupt from the speakers.

Frontman/singer Britt Daniel is just amazing with the vocals; his singing is usually as rough as the music here, but in songs like "Nefarious," he tries out mellow, smooth vocals instead. The lyrics are the uneven point -- some are simplistic, but then others are just wonderfully warped ("She was smoking up all his cigarettes/And putting 'em out in his hand/She said that you think this hurts now, kid, well/Just wait till later man...")

Spoon's first few discs have finally come back into print, and "Telephono" and "Soft Effects" are as brilliantly raw as ever. Must-listens for fans of classic indie-rock.

5 out of 5 stars Buy The Realistic.......2006-07-26

Like the three Sankara stones in Temple of Doom my Spoon collection now glows with the addition of the Telephono LP and Soft Effects EP. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Eerie and dark music for the soul.......2007-03-08

Midnight Syndicate's 13th HOUR is the perfect album to listen to while you write; its dark mood and somber atmosphere are inspiring to me when I write a horror tale. It also serves as great background music to your Halloween party or gothic evening among friends.

This was the first album I got from them and I want all the others too because I'm hooked now. They recently re-released their early works under the title OUT OF THE DARKNESS. Also, check out VAMPYRE and GATES OF DELIRIUM.

Whether you're the Goth type or a casual fan wanting some cool music to set the ambiance at a party, 13th HOUR is an awesome symphonic horror album.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-02-03

I write gothic horror stories and love to listen to music that "puts me into another world". I'm so glad that I found this CD. It has definately inspired some of my best writing.

5 out of 5 stars very cool.......2007-01-10

I'm a halloween fan from wayyy back and this is the best cd I've found for just the occasion.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Atmospheric c.d........2007-01-08

We had this playing in all the rooms of our house during our Halloween party last year, all the tracks going in different order in a continuous loop. This set quite a mood! Everyone commented on the music and how great it was. Just the right amount and use of sound effects. So many Halloween type c.d.'s go too far and become just corny and that wrecks the mood you're trying to create in the first place. After the party, when everyone left but for my cousins and us, we just had this playing in the library and had a ball scaring the wits out of each other with our own "personal" ghost stories. We're not into the whole goth culture thing, but we can appreciate what M.S. is doing. To listen to this at only Halloween is a mistake, you're short changing yourself. Put this on curled up with you're favorite suspense, thriller or horror book for an added dimension to the experience.

The ageless Sonic Youth return with a new, yet familiar, excursion into their own particular brand of ultra-amplified, dissonant rock. The quartet's CD A Thousand Leaves evokes fond memories of yesteryear's noisy, now-classic, avant-garde approach, while retaining snippets of traditional pop elements heard on several of their previous major-label releases. As Sonic Youth's music has gained a larger audience, they've preserved doses of the crunched melody and meandering structure that has always been their trademark. The new release sounds relatively unabashed, with wandering songs like "Female Mechanic Now on Duty" spewing extended barrages of feedback and Kim Gordon's dry, unsettling scowls at the listener. Look deeper, however, and there's a quiet resonance among the racket, with tracks like "Sunday" and "Snare, Girl" making use of Thurston Moore's cooler vocal tone and jagged, cascading guitar passages. --Matthew Cooke

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars He's just a kitten..........2006-08-05

Another masterpiece in the Sonic Youth catalouge. Here the band keeps their avant style leaving behind the pop stylings of Dirty and Goo, and continue with 'Washing Machine' songs. As an SY fan knows though every album is much different than any other, so this of course has it's own unique.

The standout track is definatley "Sunday" with perfect Thurston vocals. Lee keeps up his spoken word masterpieces that always ring true. And the sometimes hit or miss Kim Gordon is in top riot grrl form blasting away on "Female Mechanic".

2 out of 5 stars Sonic Youth loses their way.......2006-07-02

I remember when this album came out. I had been a huge Sonic Youth fan for years and I ran to Mod Lang in Berkeley to buy it the day it was released. I brought it home, put it on, and desperately tried to like it. But I just couldn't. SY had always had a penchant for strectching out their feedback experiments into sprawling, fasinating compositions, but here it all just seemed to melt down into a pointless noise crusade. There are a few high points, but mostly I just find myself thinking, "there is no way this song deserves to be nine minutes long." The slide continued on the next record, but fortunately they got it together again on "Murry Street" and have been putting out great stuff ever since.

5 out of 5 stars The music sounds just like the color of the album cover........2006-07-02

It took me a little while to really get into this, but once I did I just couldnt take this masterpiece out of my cd player. All the songs have like a little weird twist to them, like dejavu notes or melodies you swear you have heard before in your mind. Kim Gordon's singing is pretty good too, at first it might seem like she's just screaming whatever she thinks of but keep listening and it will be very rewarding.

4 out of 5 stars Continuous vitality.......2006-03-22

Quite superb, if only for songwriting/production triumphs like "Wildflower Soul" and "Hits of Sunshine." Outside of several gorgeously encapsulated songs, the album's entire structure practically shakes with creative energy.

Part of an essential trilogy with "Washing Machine" and "NYC Ghosts & Flowers."

5 out of 5 stars Not even a thousand words could describe the beauty of this recording.......2005-11-02

This record kinda has the same crisp sound one could find on Washing Machine which is as great as this one. There are several reasons why this album is so impressive.First of all, lyricswise it's so inspired and coming from me it really means sthg as i'm not who usually pays attention to what the singer has to say. And this really blends in so well with the guitar and bass playing.I would also like to say that they do have a great sense of climax just listen to wild flower soul, at the end of the song the guitar burst into a wild symphonic coda before suddenly coming back to the initial theme. You also have a great variety of song structure not just the verse chorus verse you're used to and pleasz don't listen to those who say their songs are to long, their judgement is merely based on a stupid assumption that a song must last no more than 5 minutes(if you think about it that's because a radio has to bring ya commercials evry 4 or 5 minutes...) and I absolutely do not agree that Kim Gordon is a poor singer .Of course occasionaly she rants like on French Tickler but it adds a contrast to the song if you want the perfect exemple of her musical talents listen to little trouble on washing machine or kissability on DN or I love you Golden blue on the latest release Sonic Nurse.

Compare with other sound effects recordings. This recording seems to have been produced from cheap recording equipment and is not very realistic. You can do a lot better.

Simply put - these are priced AND recorded right. A very generous helping of effects and the sound quality is where it should be. A very good buy - you could get the whole collection with 99 effects in each for less than the price of one CD.
