How Big 'A Boy Are Ya?, Vol. 6
Amazon.com
Five years and six albums down the road, Roy D. Mercer is still threatenin' to whup some ass. He's up to his old tricks on
Volume 6: callin' people up and tellin' 'em they've wronged him in some outrageous way. Of course, he's gonna need a couple of hundred bucks if they want their rear-ends spared. "Bowlin' Ball Fungus" is one of his best pranks yet. Roy D. tells a bowling-alley owner that Mercer's son has contracted a fungus from a bowling ball and now the poor kid can't work. It's quite a standoff between these two. On "Bus Driver," Mercer blames a bus driver from Lebanon with messin' up Mrs. Mercer's Beanie Babies. The driver asks Roy if he's ever been to Beirut. He says, no, but he's whupped some ass in Lebanon, Missouri. This funny CD closes with a musical track by veteran Southern rocker Charlie Daniels.

If you haven't yet fallen victim to Oklahoma's favorite ass-whuppin' shock jock, go ahead and let Roy D. Mercer beat you like cornbread batter this time around. Album volume 7 is a great place to start, since it compiles some of Brent Douglas and Phil Stone's funniest sketches of outrageous kvetches. The accusations hurled in these prank calls--a homespun alternative to the obscenities of The Jerky Boys--are classic Roy D., terrorizing a range of unsuspecting folk, from a cemetery custodian, bank clerk, and bowling alley owner to a shoe salesman (ordered to pay the psychiatric bills occasioned by selling girls' shoes to little "Joey Mercer"). With minimal sound effects (including some impressively realistic borborygmi suffered from eating "bad apples"), ol' Roy pursues his victims like Ahab after Moby. The only letdowns are in the anticlimactic candid-camera moments explaining how the callees (surprisingly few of whom have managed to cut Roy off entirely by then) have been set up by their friends. After which, you can be sure, the traitors are going to face some intense ass-whuppin' of their own. Not recommended for those recovering from surgery: there's too high a risk for popping your stitches. --Tom May

Grave Robbers!!.......2006-09-17
Search for and buy "The Real Leroy Mercer is John Bean" CD. John Bean was the guy who did this first. His tapes were passed around by people for years and that's how he became so well known. This 'Roy D. Mercer' thing is a rip-off of John Bean who died in 1984 of cancer at the age of 33. 'Roy D. Mercer' is stealing John Bean's stuff. He imitates Bean's voice and steals the words and expressions he was famous for. You can patronize this theft or you can support the family of the real deal. John's stuff is better anyway.
Roy D. is a rip off.......2005-11-07
They got this off of a guy from Knoxville who did this in the early 80's. Go and hear the real stuff. Leroy Mercer, aka John Bean, is the real deal, not these theives.
this isn't even worth one star..........2005-07-01
Roy D. Mercer is a poor imitation of a really funny guy who used the name Leroy Mercer (see any similarities there?) for his prank calls. If you want to know the real story, do a search for Leroy Mercer aka John Bean. Unfortunately there is also another jerk imitating Johnny and he calls himself "Lee Roy Mercer". These men should be ashamed of themselves
HYSTERICAL!.......2005-02-11
Absolutely the most hilarious thing you could ever hear. I can listen to this over and over. I am a native oklahoman currently in Tulsa, OK and I have listened to Phil and Brent for years on KMOD doing ROY D MERCER. It's a running joke around my office and we are always imitating him! I totally recommend any of his CD's to everyone. I bet $100 you won't be able to keep a straight face! KEEP ON WHOOPIN @$$ ROY D!
If you can't laugh at Roy D.Mercer, get a new funny bone...!.......2004-10-07
Roy D. Mercer is the "down home" version of the Jerky Boys, the brainchild of Oklahoma DJs Phil and Brent. He is the radio version of getting Punk'd by Ashton Kutcher, that is if Ashton had a Southern accent. Through nearly a dozen CDs he has caught many an unsuspecting caller with a threat of an "ass-whoopin'", mainly thanks to the caller's friends/family/co-workers who set up the calls to see if they can get them (the intended victim) riled up.
"Greatest Fits" takes some of the best pranks from the first 6 volumes of the "How Big a Boy Are Ya?" series and combines them into one sweet package for the consumate Mercer fan and/or neophyte to enjoy.
Truly the best of the bunch has to be "Bad Apples" where Roy calls a grocer and asks to see if he can get a delivery of certain items due to the fact that he ate a few apples that have left him with a bad case of diarrhea (the sound effects are hilarious enough that even I was left in the floor, as Roy says during the skit, "doubled up with a gut-ache" from laughing so hard). Also great is "Dead Trees" where Roy calls a woman requesting compensation for several trees that died thanks to a herbicide advertised in a newsletter that the woman suggested. But when Roy threatens her with the customary "ass-whuppin", she turns the tables and dares HIM to bring it!
My personal favorite is "Horse Feed", where Roy calls a woman requesting payment over cancelled horse riding groups after one of the horses has a little problem (or should I say a BIG problem)after eating the horse feed from her shop, a fact the shop owner finds hilarious, laughing through the entire phone call. The clincher comes when Roy tells the woman that his wife, Sharon Jean, is "gonna kick [her]ass so hard [she'll]have to clear her throat to fart".
Whether you are a fan of the HBaBAY? series or just getting started in, you definitely need to make room for Greatest Fits into your collection...

Hilarious!.......2005-09-04
Our family was recently "introduced" to the CD's by Roy D. Mercer. After listening to a couple different CD's, we knew we would be getting some of our own. They are so funny, they have had our family and friends laughing out loud!
a great cd for anyone who loves to play jokes on others.......2002-05-08
I have been listening to RD Mercer for about 3 years now. Unlike the Jerky Boys (who I dont find funny at all) RD Mercer calls up people with a problem, asks for money to solve the problem and then if he gets no money he tells them he will kick there butt....and the lets the person on the other end off the hook. This CD never has a dull call and will keep you on the edge of your seat. To me this is the last of the best radio skits around.
Couldn't Be Much Better.......2000-12-22
Probably the best yet. Zeerox the mynah bird is incredibly funny!
Never a Dull Moment With Roy D. Mercer........2000-10-13
Roy D. Mercer is a telephone prankster which is actually, the creation of two DJS from Tulsa, Oklahoma, namely, Brent Douglas (the voice of Mercer) and Phil Stone. In each of its' ribtickling releases, Mercer, calls up on unsuspecting victims tells them that their responsible for a strange incident that took place. The fun part is that Mercer threatens to whup their you-know-what if he isn't financially compensated. Unlike the Jerky Boys, Phil and Brent let their victims off the hook.
Volume Seven never has a dull moment. One of the highlights is track two "Roy vs Goldberg" which features its' first celebrity victim, professional wrestler Bill Goldberg. My favorite of all has to be "Giant Squarsh" in which Roy harasses a TV journalist about her failure to show up to cover a giant Squash." Wait until you hear her reaction when she realizes that the phone call was a prank.
Like the first six volumes, you'll get an enjoyment out of people reacting to Roy's threat of a major "...".
If you never heard of Roy D. Mercer. Volume Seven counts as your introduction to this mad redneck maniac and his two creators.

Roy D. Mercer's shtick involves phoning unsuspecting folks from his roost at Tulsa, Oklahoma, radio station KMOD and blamin' 'em for one ridiculous thing or another. Mercer's accusations are prefaced by wild yarns and followed by demands for a few hundred dollars. Of course, the people he calls aren't so agreeable and that's when Roy threatens to whup some ass. Mercer's marks respond in wildly different ways. The guy on "Dead Hamster" isn't threatened at all; he can't stop cracking up at Mercer's convoluted tale featuring a stylishly attired, piano-playing hamster. The man at the other end of the line on "Bird Dog" is all macho. It sounds like he can't wait to tangle with Mercer and even gives the professional prankster detailed directions to his house. Each track has a Candid Camera ending where writer-producers Brent Douglas and Phil Stone let on that the call is just a gag. Even these sections provide some added yucks. --Fred Cisterna

these guys should be ashamed of themselves.......2005-07-01
Roy D. Mercer is a rip-off of Leroy (NOT LEE ROY) Mercer. Do a search for Leroy Mercer aka John Bean and find out the real story.
A very UNfunny cd........2004-10-31
These are the worst phony-phone calls that I have EVER heard, I assumed they would be funny, based on the other reviews- let's just say they were a HUGE disappointment. I love this type of humor, Roy Mercer is not humorous at all. I believe that the positive reviews must have been written by his family and record company. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS GUY.
A Very funny fellow.......2003-07-08
You'll laugh till it hurts roy d mercer is one funny fella the pranks he pulls i can't believe sometimes . pick up a copy otherwise he'll whup your tail i also recommend vol. 6 , 2
Use Caution While Driving.......2003-06-30
My better half and I bought this and some other comedy CDs for a recent road trip. This CD was so funny that I felt it impaired our ability to drive. We found ourselves listening intently and occasionally we'll make jokes with each other about the more memorable lines. It's not exactly high-brow humor, so don't buy this CD if redneck jokes and laughing at prank calls doesn't work for you. However, if you've ever listened to morning radio pranks and enjoyed them, you'll love this CD. It's perhaps the best set of radio pranks I've ever heard. My favorite on this one is the naval recruiter, but it's just one of many, many other hysterical phone calls.
Don't think this is funny? Then probably a Prozac candidate.......2002-12-15
Sure, the well crafted stories delivered to the victims of R.D. Mercer are hilarious in themselves, but it's the candid reactions of the victims that add to the cheerfulness of this effort. Unlike many of the other self-indulgent phone call pranksters on the market Roy manages to set verbal traps, luring his victims out into the open where they expose their true character. Also compared to most attempts at comedy the amount of profanity is very low ... proving you don't have to be foul mouthed to be funny ... you just have to be imaginitive...and Roy is exactly that.

Roy D. Mercer is back at 'cha. Just like on his first disc, the man is ready to whup ass if somebody don't cut him a check for some wrong he was done. Volume 2 of this prankster's funny phone calls isn't quite as hilarious as the first one, but there's still plenty to laugh at. Roy's victims include a guy at a graveyard, a pharmacist, and an auto mechanic. On "Graveyard," Mercer is determined to get back at whomever it was who pissed on his uncle's grave. "Pharmacist" presents a scenario where a faulty thermometer has caused problems for Roy's son and the old man wants some payback. When Mercer and his wife get their car back from the shop on "S & M," there's some pretty kinky items in the glove compartment and things definitely need straightening out. The disc closes with Roy recitin' a little seasonal poetry. --Fred Cisterna

Hello, This Is Roy D. Mercer.......2001-10-21
Ridiculous, absurd, silly, hilarious, stupid--just plain side-splitting funny, Roy D. Mercer's second volume of HOW BIG A BOY ARE YA? made me laugh until I cried. These phone conversations helped me not to live life too seriously because life is too serious not to take time to laugh. Jane Riley, author of SOLOMON'S PORCH, THE STORY OF BEN AND ROSE
Studded Dog Collar............2000-02-27
This is one of ther funniest CDs I have ever listened to! Vol II is just hilarious! I got a huge kick out of the Bixby routine, and the one about the graveyard. It's a must buy for those with a sense of humour!

This was the first Roy D. Mercer album I bought. I listen to it a lot, and it never fails to make me laugh. Not just a snicker, but a big ol' gut-busting laugh! I especially love the horse feed, bowling ball, and Beanie Baby skits.

Roy D. Mercer is a hack!.......2005-11-07
Roy D. Mercer is a rip-off. The original Leroy Mercer was a man by the name of John Bean, from Knoxville, TN. He found out he was dying and decided to live life to its fullest. He made the prank calls in the late 70's and early 80's and died in 1984, at the age of 33. I grew up in East Tennessee, and I remember getting a bootleg tape of his around '91. I have been hooked ever since. Bean's work is classic, he gets the people so made they could kill him. If you wany to know where this all originated it has samples of his calls there and info on how to get the CD of his classic pranks.
Same thing warmed over once again..........2002-07-22
Putting aside the fact that Roy "borrowed" his prank idea from Leroy, this CD has the same prank call premise agonizingly rehashed again for the 5th time. Call someone up, complain that he's been wronged, demand compensation, and then half-heartedly say that he "might have to come down there to give someone a ... whooping". Furthermore we get to listen to that same Oklahoma draw voice of his (or whatever you call it). Often his call victims pick up on the phony voice, and just hang on the phone to play along for fun. Roy's "character" isn't gritty or edgy. If you like Luke warm, "Senior citizen approved" calls then maybe you can sit through this for the 5th time. As for my likes, these CD's aren't half as titillating and inventive as the Jerky Boys, Musacha Tapes, TTT, Phil Hendrie, and the Bum Bar Bastards.
Still funny.......2000-05-03
I don't really know why people seem to not like this one as much.! Basically, if you like roy, you will like this..NUFF SAID! I cried several times during a few!
I laughed my ass off!.......1999-03-16
Absolutely the best comedy I've heard in my lifetime. I loved it
A Rip-Off.......1999-03-09
If you have heard a bootleg recording of Leroy Mercer phoning a Thom McAn store and a junkyard mechanic and you think this CD is the same guy, IT'S NOT. This "Roy D. Mercer" obviously heard the same recording and is trying to rip off the original, but he's nowhere near as funny. I was told that the original was a "police surveillance tape" and that Leroy Mercer is a real person. If anybody has any additional information on the REAL Mr. Mercer, please email me!!!!
