Even though he's suffered through some bad scripts and an ill-advised singing career and been eclipsed by a younger generation of black comics (like Martin Lawrence and Chris Rock), Eddie Murphy remains one of the most important--and funniest--standups to come along since Richard Pryor. This album reminds you why. At his best, Murphy is wonderfully inventive and accessible. There are some excellent old bits here: "Drinking Fathers," "Ice Cream Man"--plus some rare, unreleased routines from Murphy's New York nightclub days. This CD is an excellent addition to any collection; Murphy's impression of James Brown is worth the price alone, as are lines like, "What the f*** does 'gooney-goo-goo' mean?... Gus, your wife is a Bigfoot!" -- Michael Gerber
Customer Reviews:
Good CD but some great material was left out..........2007-03-08
This is a good CD if you need some Eddie in your life. However, being a die-hard fan of Eddie's since his SNL days, I was disappointed to discover the first track is not the entire "Barbeque" bit that was on the "Comedian" album ("Delirious" VHS). It was chopped off and only contained Uncle Gus setting Charlie on fire, "Roll Charlie around, he'll be alright." Then it fades off into track 2, the rest of the "Barbeque" bit ("Goony-Goo-Goo" "Your wife is a big foot, isn't she Gus?") which is titled, "Drinking Fathers." Huh? This is the way it should have been: the first track should have been "The Barbeque" in its entirety, then track 2 should have been the actual "Drinking Fathers" which was released on Eddie's very first CD. It is just hiliarious. Also left out from the first CD was Eddie's bit about his senile grandmother always asking, "What time is it?" and "Why it's so cold in here?" Hiliarious. The song "Enough Is Enough" featuring Buckwheat and Little Richard was also left out. The first CD is out of print so it's usually expensive when you do find it. Luckily, my brother has the tape so I copied his.
The rest of the CD is fine but they could have left off "Old Jew", "Buckwheat", and "Grandma Klump" and replaced them with one of the bits I mentioned above. I wish "Raw" was available on CD but unfortunately, it's not. They do have "C----' Hard" from "Raw" on this CD but that's it. It sounds as if it was recorded at a club maybe because it is not the exact same, word-for-word bit that's on "Raw." However, it is very funny, maybe even funnier than the one used on the VHS version.
Like all greatest hits compilations, they always seem to leave some good stuff out. Whenever you pick up a greatest hits package, why is it that "your song" is never on there but the one you weren't so crazy about is? These are really not Eddie Murphy's greatest hits, but they are great and well worth the purchase.
eddie murphy the one and only.......2005-04-09
this is a great collection of some of his greatest comedy skits. i love all of these bits he does on this album it really rocks. eddie has always been my favorite stand up comedian. like i said he is the one and only he is one of a kind. like a few others i to wonder why they left some of his other hits of of this album? there were some more i feel should have been on here aswell. like the shoe throwing mother. and some others. well all in all im still happy with it. its worth the buy if you are into eddie murphy style comedy. this is the one for you. thanks for your time. hillybilly katz.
HILARIOUS!!!!.......2004-06-07
I LOVE THIS CD. IT IS FUNNY. I LOVE EDDIE MURPHY; HE IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE COMEDIANS OF ALL TIME. I ENJOY HIS COMEDY AND I ENJOY HIM. EDDDIE HAS SOME OF SIGNATURE JOKES ON HERE: ICE CREAM MAN, FAGGOTS, HIT BY A CAR, AND MANY MORE BUY THIS CD IF YOU ENJOYED EDDIE IN THE 80'S THEN YOU WOULD DEFINITELY LOVE THIS CD!!!! BUY IT !!!
Still Funny yet Lacking in Quantity.......2003-11-18
I grew up wanting to "Party All The Time" and chasing "The Ice Cream Man". I had the complete version of "Bar-B-Que" and "Drunk Fathers" memorized. But, tell me this....where is my "Shoe Throwin' Mother"? That is a classic Murphy bit and it was greatly missed on this CD. This CD could have been better...but I still got my kicks!!! Eddie Murphy.....wierd to see him in Daddy Daycare and Klumps and think of how he used to be. I give the CD about a 8 out of 10.
A Great Collection But Buy the Other Albums as Well.......2003-10-28
This is a great collection of previously unreleased tracks as well as some tracks from his other two albums Comedian and Self Titled. There's twelve new (well still recorded in the 80's) tracks and six from the other albums. In my opinion the funniest tracks are still on the other albums. The Mr T jokes you have probably heard of are not on this album. The hilarious tracks Talking Cars, Myths/A Little Chinese and Black Movie Theatres are also absent and should really be on a greatest hits Eddie Murphy album.
Still this album is worthwhile listening to but I think you will definitely buy the other two once you have this. If you are buying this for your kids because they love donkey from Shrek or the Nutty Professor or something just be aware it has a fair bit of swearing on it. I prefer the other albums (they also have better sound quality) but you won't really go wrong with this.

An Early Eddie Murphy..........2007-06-28
This is Eddie, two years before Delirious came out, along with the concurrent audio release "Eddie Murphy: Comedian". He never fails to make me laugh, and I consider Eddie a stand-up great who's also had a good deal of success (at least in the 80's) with film. For everyone that keeps trash-talking the songs on this album, what's wrong with you people?? They're FUNNY! "Boogie In Your Butt" is the craziest concept for a song, and it takes a comedic genius like Eddie Murphy to pull it off. Which he does! Buy this, you won't be disappointed... and the used ones work just fine, why pay nearly $100 just for a CD from 1982 WITH cellophane when you can get one for $10 or less that works just fine?
could have been one of the greatest of all time.......2005-11-04
Eddie murphy was the man back in the 80s mixing outragous and raunchy one liners with hilarious stories that revolved around everyday life that everyone regardless of their race could relate to. Every track on this album is a piece of true comic genius and reminds us of a time when Eddie was much more than just tired old man trying to play the family man role. (I.E. Pluto Nash, Daddy Day Care.) Its a shame he didnt stick with comedy because he will be remembered as one of the great comedic talents of our time but I dont really consider him to be as great as Red Foxx, Richard Prior,or Bill Cosby. Anyways in case you havent figured it out yet Eddie Murphy is a very very funny man whose comedy has been known to leave some in stitches and others (like parents and those who are easily offended) red faced and full of anger. This was a great find at the local record store. I really enjoyed it I hope you do to.
The songs are funny too.......2005-10-04
People seem to diss the "songs" on the album, as if Eddie were trying to be a serious singer on the cd. The song Boogie in Your Butt is flat out hilarious. Enough is Enough is funny too, but not as funny as the first "song". Every track on here is a winner. His best effort, way better than RAW, the equal to Delirious. Did they ever release this as a Video?
eddie murphy one of a kind.......2005-04-09
this is eddie murphy at an early stage, yes he had just started takin off the runway so to speak. he was and still is one of the funnyest men ever to do stand up comedy' he is my favorite. i have this cd' and its a good one. i listen to it all the time.. my favorite's from this album is faggots , buck, and hit by a car number 1, this is another good one to add to your collection of eddie murphy. thanks kelly...
Step aside my friends and let me show you how to do it...........2005-02-15
This came out during my college days. Do not expect Richard Pryor type social commentary or warm funny Bill Cosby tales about childhood here. Murphy, then barely out of his teens, is basically taking a scattergun approach to make people laugh about things he sees. Leave your brains at the door and laugh. Interestingly, an Ebony magazine article once quoted Murphy as dismissing "Boogie in Your Butt" (where the title of this review comes from) as "garbage." True, but it's FUNNY garbage, as is the "Enough is Enough" parody (is that Joe Piscopo with him?).

Classic Eddie Murphy.......2005-09-15
I loved it on video on cable back in the day...love it now. Brings you down memory lane!!!! Eddie Murphy at his funniest.
For those looking, this IS the HBO "Delirious" concert set.......2005-05-19
Just wanted to clarify that for anyone looking for Eddie Murphy's very first HBO special "Delirious", this is it (the audio anyway). I'm not positive its that _exact_ night (him using a fan's camera to take a picture of his crotch isn't on this CD) but it _is_ the Delirious comedy routine. Its all here, gay Ralph Kramden & Ed Norton, gay Mr.T, Ricky "Its just so rediiiculous" Ricardo etc.
This is Eddie Murphy's first and finest routine. None of his later specials or even any of his films ever surpassed this stand-up set.
Spawned a Million Hacks.......2004-04-25
Unfortunately, it's hard to fully appreciate this album today. Why, you ask? Because 99% of the "comedians" on ComicView and Def Jam have COVERED it, that's why. Their mannerisms, their material, their delivery...just about everything they do is derived from this great record.
In doing so, these thieves have killed the entertainment value of COMEDIAN for those who weren't around to enjoy it when it was new. But hey, buy it anyway as an act of protest.
Classic example of 80's standup comedy.......2003-05-07
This album is a classic 80's comedy album. For those of you who have seen Delirious a lot of the main stuff from that video is on this CD. The Mr T material is of course classic as is the Mick Jagger description.
This album does have a substantial amount of swearing which may offend some people and you shouldn't buy this album by mistake if you're looking for something for the kiddies because they like Donkee from Shrek or Eddie Murphy in the Nutty Professor. The swearing isn't just mindless though it does fit the comedy.
A lot of the comedy is rather dated but it does reflect the times of the 80's. The Aids stuff especially related to the fear and unknown aspects of the disease at the time. I found it interesting his description of Michael Jackson which reflects what the king of pop was like in the early 80's. There's a fair bit of prejudice jokes against homosexuals, women and other races but if you can overlook that those jokes are pretty funny.
On this album Eddie tells about why he became a comedian, his childhood and other hilarious stuff. Some of the gags are obviously visual which is a bit stupid. It's not as funny as his earlier self titled one but it's still worth listening to.
THIS MAN IS FUNNY!!!!.......2002-12-31
Just the other day, I was cleaning out my attic and I happen to find a cd with a fairly, handsome young man by the name of Eddie Murphy.
I didn't think nothing of it, I thought it was another R&B classic, but I came across the word "Comedian", and just got hooked to the cd. I stopped what I was doing, and played it on my stereo.
This CD is hilarious. It begins with Eddie Murphy talking about faggots, and how he's scared of gay people. The most offensive, but funniest part was when he wondered if Mr.T was a faggot. He was imatating a gay Mr.T and the guys from the honey mooners.
Eddie Murphy pokes fun at all the celebrities from Mick Jagger to Stevie Wonder. My favorite tracks is "Singers", "Ice Cream Man, Shoe Throwing Mothers"and "The Barbeque". I like this CD not only because it's funny, but it takes you back to childhood, and by me being from the "old school" I could relate to some of the stuff he said that reminded me of "real life"
Boy, you just didnt know how excited I was finding this CD. This CD happens to be funnier than a lot of comical CDs that were out after '83. This is a CD you just cant live without. Though, Eddie Murphy wasnt this funny after Delirious, I rather stick with THIS Eddie Murphy, when he was new and knew how to kill a crowd with his hilarious jokes.
Eddie, you did a good job. Wished you could have made some more comicial albums like this. I almost died listening to you!!! Fans, if you're feeling down and depressed, or just looking for a good time, buy this CD. You wont be disapointed.

Eddie's minor classic!.......2005-01-29
This was Eddie Murphy's third attempt at a full fledged music album and apparrantly the third time was the charm. First off, he has a good, if undistinctive voice. He is never flat and never off key and puts a lot of feeling into his vocals. The opening track is called "Yeah" and features Garth Brooks, Barry White, Babyface, Bon Jovi, Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder and quite a few others repeating the words yes and yeah over and over as some kind of dreamy chant to positivity. I know it sounds like a bad idea on paper, but it is really quite catchy and strangely effective.Lets face it, this was the era of grunge depression music and gangsta rap, so to me it was kind of nice to hear this once arrogant entertainer offer up such positive energy. Next up is "I Was A King" with reggae artist Shabba Ranks, a song about slavery, racism and black pride. This one is also catchy and was played on the radio a few times, but never quite caught on. Then comes the title track, "Love's Alright", definately the best song Eddie has ever written. This song will take you to heaven. It is a Prince-soundalike song, but a damn good one. The next one, "Desdemona" is Prince meets "I Am The Walrus" and is also good. Apparrantly, he was really into psychedelia at the time. He also does decent covers of Hendrix's "Hey Joe" and The Beatles "Good Day Sunshine" as well as a duet with Michael Jackson called "Whatsupwitu" which is little more than a repetetive novelty song. I remember the video had it's world premier after an episode of "Martin" and much attention was paid to Michael's participation in the song and video. Overall, Eddie created a cool little psychedelic soul album here and musically, was really starting to find his way. Unfortunately, he stopped recording music after the commercial failure of this album.

The Perfect Album For Me.......2005-06-29
I finally got this album and I wish I had got it sooner. This is the perfect album for me, because it has praise, worship, prayer, and contemporary gospel music. It has every type of style of Christian music I like. When it comes to prayer music, my favorite song is "Ignite My Fire" after that I like "One Pure and Holy Passion". It has two good praise songs too "Awesome" and "Good". My favorite worship related song is "Created to Worship". He also did a nice job on his remake song "Praise is What I Do". I like the "Healing Worship" too it makes me wish I was at his concert. I would definitely attend a William Murphy concert, because he definitely knows how to focus on the presence of God.
Well, anyway, I also like the song "Let it Rise". He has 3 good studio recorded contemporary gospel songs. My favorite is "I Don't Know Why" because I like neo-soul gospel and it was produced by PJ Morton. I like "Changes" and "All Day" too. I also like the song "Crazy Praise" which is a contemporary live song sung with Devaughn and DeJaughn Murphy. I hope they come out with an album, too.
William Murphy definitely can write some good songs. I can't wait for his next album. I heard he signed up with Sony. Hopefully, that'll be as good or better.
Filled with the Annointing.......2005-05-03
From an insiders point of view. I was in the choir singing on this CD. My Youth choir (www.fullturn.com) was chosen to sing with them and record the live DVD and CD. We learned all the songs in 3 weeks and then one day we shuttled out there and from the time the walked in, you could fill the holy spirit. It was off to an awesome start then you just felt the holy ghost hit you and everyone went nuts... There was such a powerful moment, we were screaming, crying, praising the Lord... THEN THE POWER WENT OFF... There was no storm around, and the parking lot lights stayed on. There is no room for the devil in your life if you buy this CD and play it. You are covered with the blood, and this CD proves it.
All Day review.......2004-12-29
From the first song to the last - total anointing. This CD has blessed my life. I was at a praise and worship conference conducted by him and afterwards, I bought the CD along with DVD. All I can say is, when you get the CD, your life will never be the same.
Worship, Worship, Worship!!!.......2004-12-15
Once Again Murphy has blessed us with a musical array of praise and worship. Deep in the depths of his love of the Lord he ignites the kingdom with his motto "Praise is What I Do". I have to say if you don't get this CD you will be missing out on a fantasic worship experience.
