Rough, raw, raunchy, and pre-Hollywood polish, this CD shows the qualities that made Pryor sui generis, a standup legend. Recorded live at the Redd Foxx Club in 1971, the routines are informal, tightly delivered, brutally honest, and very funny. Who but Pryor could deliver a line like "Never take your wife to an orgy. They always say, 'You never touch me like that.'" Not only do you laugh, you believe the man knows from experience. Many of these bits became cornerstones of his act and thus can be heard on other albums. However, these versions are the master copies. Well worth the occasional glitches of a live recording,
Craps (After Hours) is Pryor at his most authentic, and, arguably, his funniest.

Good for what it is.......2002-10-21
This is not the complete soundtrack to Guys and Dolls, however it is a great interpretation of some of the music. These are hit songs, with some good singing and good orchestra, for a pretty reasonable price. Also included is the song "Adelaide", that is an addition in the movie, but is taken out in the broadway play. I bought this CD for that song, and am pleased with the whole thing! Highly Recommended.

THIS IS A CD YOU CAN NOT MISS! "PET ME POPPA" IS AN AWESOME SONG!

Genius punk/pop from Boston.......2004-05-23
This is their "Bossanova"--i.e. their third and poppiest release. While still miles ahead of most of the dreck that passes for music today, their first e.p. "Boo Boo" and their first album "Heavens" are even better, though sadly unavailable these days. Buy "Craps." You won't regret it. The album is worth it for the anthem "Ron Klaus Wrecked His House" alone.

i was a huge fan of Big Dipper and thank god they came to providence. i saw them a bunch of times. nice guys too. They were way ahead of their time and got a raw deal with their record company - 'nuff said. smart lyrics, smart melodies, twangy pop guitars and you cant go wrong. you will play this cd again and again.
me, i upgraded to the cd from my worn out cassette. ;-)
GET THIS NOW you won't regret it..........2001-02-19
If you like chiming guitars, witty lyrics, post-punk energy, or anything from the Boston scene in the 80's (Pixies, Throwing Muses, Neighborhoods and so on...)- or any combination of the above- then buy this and be thankful you did. Then, regret that you didn't know about the Dipper when they were around (I regret I only saw them live once). "Craps" was their zenith album, great songs with great production, capitalizing on the pop beauty of the previous album, "Heavens". Each song is a winner, delivered with twin guitar hooks, and choruses sang with fever-pitch harmonies that you will find yourself humming all day long. Most importantly, you can tell they were having fun singing their songs. Unfortunately Big Dipper went the way of so many great bands, signing with a major label bent on finding the next REM or grunge success story- and being ignored by said label and finally breaking up. If you can find "Heavens" on CD, get it also, it has their debut EP on it as well (whenever I find it I buy it and give it away to someone I like). - Ward (Paige's husband)

That Black Bard of Peoria..........2006-09-07
What can I say that hasn't been said? 1971-4 I was in high school and Richard was our Shakespeare. Comedies, Tragedies and Histories all rolled into one. The first album I heard was the one with him on the cover dressed like an Aboriginal hunter; lion-cloth, bone through nose, spear and squating with a look on his face that said, 'don't f#@k wit me...', it had the first incarnation of Black Ben the Black Smith, titled 'the Prison Play', I knew then that I had tumbled down the rabbit hole and and would NEVER see Kansas again.
Just when I thought it couldn't get any deeper, here comes 'CRAPS: After Hours' damn...Richard pulled back the velvet curtain and exposed the P-Funk, Un-Cut Funk...The Bomb. Anyone that grew up during the early '70's immediately jetisoned Redd Foxx, Bill Cosby, Flip Wilson, Nipsy Russell, Pigmeat Markham, Moms Mabley, Rudy Ray Moore and any other genius of that era and recognized that a new time had come. We saw the future and his name was Richard Pryor. While I cherish all his work, my favorite trilogy is; Craps, That Nigg...Crazy and Bicentenial Nigg. He had the nerve to SAY what everyone else only thought. He gave insights that were both universal AND unique to our (African-American) experiences. His timing, delivery, inflection...unequaled. We memorized his observations and recited them as the situation called for, never with his touch, but always with the utmost respect. He was, is and will always be, THE TRUTH.
Pryor in his embryonic stage.......2002-06-18
Much of this consists of early versions of routines that he would later make famous. The Preacher routine is the forerunner of the more concise (and funnier) "Our Text For Today" on "Is It Something I Said." Some of this may also be found on the video "Live And Smokin'" from around the same time (1971). The bits oabout "Oilwell," The Osmond Brothers/Jackson 5, that N---r's Crazy, etc. are all forerunners of what was to come.
Pryor's best LP and perhaps the best comedy LP ever.......2000-11-01
No comedian before, since, or ever, will accomplish what Richard Pryor managed to accomplish on this one album. Craps is African-American comedy in a nutshell, weaving themes of race (funny stuff about Jerry West and the Osmond Brothers), class, sex, religion, and black culture all at once. The After Hours routine remains the funniest comedy routine I have ever heard. You will laugh until you cry the first time you hear this LP, and then you'll laugh just as hard every time you hear it. There were other more acclaimed Pryor LP's such as "That Nigger's Crazy" or "Super Nigger," but this one is the best.
Craps.......2000-10-03
This album is a true classic of a true comedic genius. As a young man this album put an indelible imprint on my sense of humor . I spent countless hour rolling in laughter listening to Richard. The greatest comedy album of all time.
the greatest.......1999-10-09
another must have from the man.you can never get bored with this man's way of story-telling.and long live mudbone.his works are as important to me as mozarts are to the rest of the world.
