5 out of 5 stars Oliver Norvell Hardy & Arthur Stanley Jefferson.......2002-03-21

Hearing these two sing is almost as magical as seeing them on the (small or large) screen. Musical excerpts from "Way Out West" and other of the L&H opus (including the oft maligned "March of the Wooden Soldiers"i.e."Babes in Toyland")are included. Sound quality is spotty, but the chance to hear Ollie sing some of his "Minstrel Show" type ballads brings back some really fond memories. Not every track showcases L&H but even the ones that don't are fine examples of Hal Roach/Hollywood movie music. For this price it just doesn't get any better!

        Product Description

Hal "Lone Pine" and Betty Cody are better known today for being the parents of guitar virtuoso, Lenny Breau than they are for their pioneering country records. When Lenny was 12 years old, his parents were successful recordings artists for RCA Victor and headlined the WWVA Jamboree in Wheeling, West Virginia. The sessions featured some of the finest pickers of Nashville and New York, including Chet Atkins, Jerry Byrd, George Barnes and Billy Mure. This disc reissues, in many cases for the first time, these all-but-forgotten sides. The accompanying book features liner notes by Hank Davis, based on his recent interviews with Betty Cody and some of the original sidemen of the Pine/Cody show. They offer an honest look at the real-life marital strife that fuelled the recording sessions, and also provide insight into the development of young Lenny Breau's talent and the role played by mentors like Chet Atkins. The book is generously illustrated with vintage photographs, many of them previously unpublished.

3 out of 5 stars OK Songs, but Bad Production.......2002-10-18

Erika Hoffman has a great singing voice and the songs have strange lyrics kind of like the band His Name Is Alive, but the album is marred by a mix which emphasizes the guitars, the guitar effects, and analog synths too much, leaving the vocals almost inaudible. There are a few songs which seemed to escape this treatment and sound good, such as "Sunday Man" and "Poinsettia." Unfortunately, the songs lack any raw energy which would make up for bad production, and as a whole the album is merely an interesting first effort.

2 out of 5 stars Warn did the production on this???.......2000-11-25

TRAIL OF THE LONESOME PINE is Godzuki's first release and shows a great deal of promise. Sadly, the production is murky and noisy, which is very ironic, considering that the great Warren Defever (of His Name is Alive) produced it. Lead singer Erika Hoffman has got an especially clear and beautiful voice, as anyone who has heard HNIA's songs "The Bees" or "Can't Always be Loved" can attest, but on this album her voice is buried under noisily-mixed guitars and drums.

Godzuki's got interesting songwriting talent (the lyrics are about as surreal as can be) and a quirky and novel science-rock style, but the album is ruined by the production. I give TRAIL OF THE LONESOME PINE two stars, because Godzuki is a good band, but no more because the album often is on the verge of being unlistenable.

1 out of 5 stars "Science Rock" gone wrong.......2000-01-26

In my effort to support local acts, here's one from metro Detroit that has a pretty good pedigree around town - having His Name Is Alive's Warren Defever on production and band members who've played with Detroit-area indie-rock bands such as His Name Is Alive, the Whales, the Ohms, the Volebeats, the Mystic Moog Orchestra and Teach Me Tiger. The boys (and girl) in the band like to refer to their music as science rock - you should read this as "noise". Don't get me wrong, there's the usual guitar, bass, drum verse, chorus, verse chorus stuff going on in the tunes...and some pretty vocals by Erika Hoffman I might add. But, simply put, the songwriting's not doing it for me - there's no emotional involvement in it. Lumped (not layered mind you) on top of most of the songs, particularly near the beginning or end of the song are some noises emanating from some broken down 70's synth or a piece of lab equipment gone wrong. Integrating the electronica in the song to get an emotional response as Radiohead or Blur do is one thing, but just plopping it down as a gimmick isn't flying with me.
