This rhythmic, mesmerizing collection of modern American poetry is brilliant. The radio should sound like this. Life should sound like this. Intelligent, passionate artists speak their minds, backed by wonderful soundtracks of original music. Short pieces (everything is short and sweet in this collection) by names like Leonard Cohen, Robert Creeley, and Joseph Brodsky flow effortlessly alongside up-and-coming poets and "found" pieces (from square-dance calls to rope-jumping rhymes). Every moment seems filled with insight and excitement. This entire production is a testament to why poetry is essential to our lives. With these astounding 54 songs (plus two bonus tracks) Tom Waits has added a vital new work to his catalog. The title, Orphans, refers to the songs either being from a range of outside projects, various impulses, and whims, or simply not having found a place on the albums for which they were intended. While that scenario has constituted a stopgap measure for lesser artists, this set stands alongside Waits's finest work. He has shaped it into three separate discs, each one separately titled after the prevailing character of its tracks and playing with its own mood and dramatic arc. Brawlers favors raucousness and uptempo grinds and grooves, while Bawlers showcases balladry and the more overtly poetic. Bastards is a funhouse of angular characters, spiky anecdotes, shaggy dogs, and even a Kurt Weill cover. The set offers everything from the amped-up rockabilly hiccuping of "Lie to Me" to the breathtaking perfection of "Shiny Things," and from the outraged political reporting of "Road to Peace" to the closing-time lament of "Little Man." --David GreenbergerDescription
The three disc set is packaged in a fold-out digipak with a beautifully designed 24-page booklet, including neverbefore-seen Waits' photographs.Customer Reviews:

Absolute Favorite Singer!.......2007-05-04
It's Tom Waits, and therefore excellent.......2007-04-06
Waits has long been a a man of many personas-demented carnival barker, old testament prophet, Jesus freak, depression-era bluesman-and even more than his more traditional albums Orphans shows off his chameleonic nature to the fullest extent. With its ample available space, Orphans allows Waits to induldge in genre exercises ranging from rockabilly (Lie To Me); to baroque pop (Little Drop of Poison); to swamp blues (Buzz Fledderjohn); to gospel (Lord I've been changed) without ever sounding like just an imitator of his varied influences. That said, Waits is still at his best when he dwells in a musical territory all his own, be it noisy, free-form experimentation or more reflective, sparsely instrumented balladry.
Each disc brings with its own unique feel, with the first one feeling the most like a proper Waits album in the vein of such all-encompassing classics as Rain Dogs and Bone Machine. Waits gets his classic-rock fix taken are of early with the scorching Low Down, whose big, brash guitar riffs wouldn't sound out of place in the '60's. The clamorous percussion and dizzying time signatures of Fish in the Jailhouse should please fans of Waits's more eccentric side, or just those like this writer who crave something abrasive and weird. Providing a sharp contrast to these tunes, but still very much in line with Waits's overall approach, are the downcast resignation of the bluesy, guitar-driven Road to Piece (a seven-minute examination of the conflict in Israel) and the closing lament of Rains on Me.
The ballad-heavy second disc, while occasionally a tad forgettable, is still home to some of the most brilliant material of Waits's career. The triumphant Take Care of All of My Children is driven by a stirring, martial drum beat, while the following Down There by the Train manages to expertly combine sadness, regret, and hope through Waits's singularly poetic lyrical imagery ("There's no eye for an eye/There's no tooth for a tooth/I saw Judas Iscariot carryin' John Wilkes Booth"-brilliant). In somewhat of a curveball for Waits, Never Let Go is inspiring and poignant in its straightforward message of devotion. There's also a great, booze-sodden lament in Goodnight Irene, which finds Waits's nicotine-stained voice at its most raw and unhinged.
The third disc is a nod to every side of the schizophrenic last two decades of Waits's career, with unstructured noise explorations (the mutant jazz-blues-rock workout Heigh Ho is hard-edged and ominous even for Waits) to a slew of spoken-word pieces to some more tender ballads. Waits starts off the disc by breaking out his classic rasp on the delightfully malevolent What Keeps Mankind Alive, and backs himself up with some inspired vocal beat-boxing on the Spidey's Wild Ride and King Kong. The latter track is especially interesting, with Waits's pained wail augmented by some ear-piercing guitar squeals and a subterranean bass line as he declaims the tragic story of, well, King Kong, with all the gravity of a character delivering the closing monologue of a Shakespearean tragedy.
Why did I wait so long before buying this CD?.......2007-03-24
For me, 4 stars is about as good as it gets because I reserve the 5 for perfection. The biggest negative for me was the lack of lyrics in the the lower cost edition.

As the lead singer and songwriting force behind Soul Coughing, M. Doughty combined a slam poetry, ironic sensibility with jam band-ish, arty Downtown grooves. That group was an apex of smart stoner rock. Since the mid `90s Doughty has gone it alone, and his first release for ATO combines two self-released solo recordings that flirt with the sublime. Recorded in a single day in 1996, Skittish nicely replicates his solo performances, minus witty banter. "Real Love/ It's Only Life" collapses a Mary J. Blige song into a Feelies tune, so of course it's perfect pop. The 2003 EP Rockity Roll is just as stripped-down as Skittish, but electronic drums and keyboards dominate the mix. Mike has become a beautifully mournful, smart-ass singer-songwriter in the vein of Richard Thompson. Doughty's voice is a tightly controlled, slightly nasal croon that sounds like he learned to sing by listening to trumpet solos off old bebop records. Rejecting the term "folk" for what he does, Doughty prefers his own phrase, "small rock." Surely, it's more restrained, slower and less flashy than Soul Coughing. It's also much better. --Mike McGonigalCustomer Reviews:

I Guess Making Your Soul Cough Can Lead To Great Things!.......2006-02-25
When I hear the words:
"I love my country so much, man - Like an exhasperating friend"
In the song "Move On (Bloom Like the Sunlight In My Song)" I feel Mike's struggles with the world around him.
These albums are a great intro into Mike's Solo career for anyone who liked Soul Coughing. It's not as jazzy, but the poetic nature of the lyricism is still everpresent.
Don't forget to pick up Haughty Melodic, Doughty's newest release. That album delves even deeper into a more rhythmic element and swings further from the eclectic sounds of Soul Coughing.
Sincerely,
Brother Rabbit

Nicely Skittish.......2005-04-12
Doughty recorded Skittish in 1996. As the time, he'd wanted to do some acoustic stuff, which didn't fit in with what Soul Coughing was doing. They hated it. So Doughty recorded the CD on his own, submitted it to SC's record label, and was promptly rejected. But some of the songs ended up on Napster anyway, and Doughty's fans were eating it up big time. So he burned a pile of Skittish CDs at home and sold them when he hit the road for a solo tour.
Rockity Roll, recorded in 2003, is a mix of acoustic, lo-fi, outtakes from Skittish, and some live songs (recorded in 2004). I think this is the stronger of the two CDs.
I was never a Soul Coughing fan, but I love Doughty's solo work. His guitar style is folksy, but cool, and his lyrics are intelligent, telling and strong. Doughty's casual style is part of his appeal - unassuming, yet obviously enjoying the ride.
I don't think anyone would be disappointed with this set, which costs a bit less than you'd pay for a regular CD. If you're skeptical, at least give a listen to "Move On," which is a low-key protest song from a guy who might believe the war is wrong, but still loves his country. If you like it, and you will, watch for the upcoming release by Mike Doughty's Band (yeah, that's the name of the band), which will be released sometime in mid spring on Dave Matthews' ATO Records. Yes, Dave is a big fan. You will be too.

Chomsky is a hypocrit and an idiot.......2006-12-17
In regards to his views on "anarchism" also refered to as the oxymoron term, "libertarian socialism"...you don't get anarchy with MORE government controls on free will... Please don't buy this dreck. Read about capitalism from a REAL economist like Thomas Sowell or Milton Friedman. Read about international relations from a REAL International Relations Theorist like Kenneth Waltz. Never have I come a across such a man who's popularity and reverence is based soley on his views in areas which he knows nothing about. Would you buy a book on Linguistics by Henry Kissinger? I think not.
Honesty really is a rarity today........2004-05-08
In this lecture, he refers to the media, while referring to Massachusett's then-governor William Weld as a religious, free-marketer, NOT making reference to Weld's heading to Washington "hat-in-hand" to collect money to make up for the deregulation that over-fished some of the most productive fishing waters off the Massachusetts coast. (There was, of course, an excuse for that over-harvest. In this case, it was an alleged predator--not then, or ever found, but, well, there MUST have been one, right?)
I've listened to this several times, often do while doing yard work or other menial tasks seldom undertaken by area Republican "conservatives." Suffice it to say it puts economic myths to rest.
If you read the papers, or, even worse, rely on radio or television for information, what you're hearing is of about as much intellectual substance as any fairy tale. However, the vast majority of us do not live happily ever after. This is among the lectures describing why that's true.
great lecture, quality issues are overplayed.......2003-12-23
Find out why Capitalism isn't always good for folks.......2002-05-31
This is a great introduction to the issue of how the American Government and Corporations have teamed up to use the working class of the USA and other countries. The economy does "well" which makes it possible for the "haves" to get more of what the "have-nots" don't have.
Great lecture... bad recording.......2002-05-02

The American poetry renaissance rolls on, and this soundtrack to the PBS special proves that the spoken word isn't just alive and well, it's kicking and snorting and rapping and bopping, too. Relative unknowns sit right alongside big guns like Leonard Cohen, Robert Creeley, Amiri Baraka, and Joseph Brodsky on this disc. The works run from sexy murmurs to social commentary, from found poetry snatches to outright comic rants, such as Matt Cook's hilarious "James Joyce," wherein Cook moans, "James Joyce is stupid. I'd rather throw dead batteries at cows than read him." Tomandandy's atmospheric music lays a solid foundation for these wordsmiths to riff over. As a whole, this disc feels as much like a midnight road trip across this wide, weird land as anything else. --Michael RubyCustomer Reviews:

Technically, the two disc set was remarkably clean and the digital processing successfully eliminated the surface noise and degradations of time on these historic recordings. Very well done.
If you're looking for an important historical record, look elsewhere, but for a "mass market" overview of this terrible time this set serves its purpose well.
