Robert Creeley's oeuvre includes poems from as early as the '40s (and from his teaching days at Black Mountain College in the '50s), but on this CD the poet reads work written not long before this recording was made in 2000. Recorded in his home, the reading has a warm, intimate quality; the listener can savor the natural tone of his voice. Unlike Creeley's earlier work, which could be fragmentary and obscure, these poems feel whole and direct. This poet has often displayed a fondness for one- and two-syllable words as well as short poetic lines, and, indeed, much of this newer material is lean and spare. The passage of time and mortality are often the subjects here, but the poems are philosophical rather than morbid (although they can be tinged with a sort of tough melancholy). The album's longest piece is "Clemente's Images," a 25-part poem that reflects and responds to the artwork of Italian painter Francesco Clemente. It's a delight to hear these sculpted shards of language given breath by Creeley's voice. --Fred Cisterna

Album Description
So There is Steve Swallow's music for string quartet, piano and electric bass - inspired byand featuring the poetry of Robert Creeley (1926 - 2005), one of the most important American
poets of the 20th century.
The album is a unique and hugely enjoyable synthesis of words and music, and includes
Creeley's last recordings before his untimely death.
Swallow recorded Creeley reading his poems in upstate New York, wrote new music around
the poet's speech rhythms, then flew to Oslo to complete the project with Steve Kuhn and the
Cikada String Quartet.
Delivering one of the great performances of his life, pianist Steve Kuhn shows the broad
range of his technique, from intensely melodic invention to free swirling sound masses,
inspired by Swallow's string quartet writing and the laconic readings of Creeley.

This is what it's all about.......2007-03-23
This is a treasure on several fronts.......2007-02-07
In that regard it puts me in mind of two other very moving collaborations: the CD by Liam O Flynn and Seamus Heaney from the mid-90's that evokes not just rural Northern Ireland, but that very essential Celtic Twilight that seems to enchant the soul; and the collaboartion among Bryan Murphy and Padraig Mc Giolla, with musician Breege Costello, called Ceolta na Sidhe - a Gaelic effort between Murphy and and Mc Giolla with incredibly haunting effects generated by Ms Costello.
In any case, that poetry and improvisational music should combine in a double helix is no surprise. That it continues to do so so effectively is a wonderful treat for the human soul in this troubled times.

Album Description
Courage is drummer Chris Massey, reed player John Mills and bassist Steve Swallow. "The Way Out is Via the Door" is a beautifully realized recording of intimate, creative jazz conversations, placing all three voices as equals and allowing the lines created to weave together and apart at will, sometimes floating over cushions of sound-wash, and creating spontaneous tension-release statements.Customer Reviews:
linear shadings in the moment.......2004-04-28
Robert Creeley and Steve Swallow need no introduction, both are masters ond originators of linear performance. Chris Massey and John Mills are the new underlings, the apprentices, the artists who will take the idea's and run with them into a new world of extreme fragility. Here the lines weave in and out and around each other, spoken word and music. I've never heard a better represenataion of the joining of the two styles.
Saxophone, bass, drums, voice. Intimate and daring.
Why hasn't this been more visible in the print media???
A must for Creeley fans!
