How do you make a pop song work without the safety net of melody? Rappers do it with hyperactive dance beats and lots of attitude, but Laurie Anderson does it by relaxing our defenses with her soothing telephone-operator voice, her hypnotic synth patterns, and droning organ washes. Once she has lured us into her aural lair, she trips us up with broken syntax and disconnected sentence fragments. Bright Red's producer is Brian Eno, an astute choice, for no one does ambient backdrops better. By themselves, these atmospheric harmonies are mere background music, Anderson's spoken monologues nothing more than bohemian stand-up comedy. When the two elements click, however, the result is some of the most original pop music around. As always, what saves Anderson from smug self-indulgence is her wicked sense of humor and her genuine sense of dread. --Geoffrey Himes

Composer, premiere player, soloist - Yin Cheng-zong's authentic Yellow River Concerto.......2007-07-03
Lang Lang recently made a new recording of this piece with DG.
I heard master Yin play this piece (in Lang Lang's stead) last evening in Hong Kong Cultural Centre, and he moved me to tears.
Yin Cheng-zong is over 60 years old now. He lived through the various turmoils of China. It requires life experience and patriotism to interpret this piece, so very sorry, I haven't heard any foreign pianist playing this piece yet, let alone on record.
HOWEVER, Yin Cheng-zong did made a recording of this piece with Claudio Abbado, but the recording has never been released by the PRC official broadcasting agency. Yin himself claims that this was one of the most memorable performances he had of this piece - Abbado understands the piece so well that Yin was highly amazed!
The foremost player and interpretor of this piece remains Yin Cheng-zong, but I must say that ALSO hearing Lang Lang playing this piece a couple of days ago (also in Hong Kong), Lang's playing of this piece is vastly improving.
something missing and deadly wrong here.......2006-11-07
but the composer of this 'yellow river' was educated in the chinese communist system, his composition was still dominated subjectively by the blind chinese revolutionary passion, the concerto from the very beginning sounds like listening to a cultural revolution marching song, banging and pounding so headstrong against almost all the foreign elements, condemning so viciously and so mercilessly with hatred, like revolutionary army at wars, like those stupid formula musicals, songs and plays created in the cultural revolution era to please the butcher chairman mao. there's almost no big difference here. when you listen to this concerto, only a small part and portion make you feel like something good and wonderful offered by the river, most part of it sounds too clueless military.
we all knew that the chinese civilization and it's culture was originated from the yellow river, it's like a mother of china. yes, yellow river is always unpreditable and changing, its inevitable floodings in the history caused a lot of deaths and tragedies, but a river could never be always so merciless and vicious. this concerto and this music is not an appropriate interpretation of the yellow river but a chinese communist revolutionary marching song by a die hard communist composer. it's a very bad concerto actually.

The German countertenor Andreas Scholl takes risks on his latest CD, Wayfaring Stranger, and not all of them pay off. It is a recording of 17 English-language folksongs, some of them very well known, such as "Down by the Salley Gardens" and "My love is like a red, red rose." This is not usually a repertory tackled by classically trained singers, who can sound prissy, but Scholl's clear, plaintive alto, with its rich low notes and gentle top range, is a quite plausible vehicle. "Wild Mountain Thyme" evokes real sadness, while "Barbara Allen" aches with unhappy love. A surprise awaits in the ballad "Henry Martin," as Scholl uses his rough, nondescript baritone to identify the hero. It is rather a jolt. At least, it is good to know his voice has actually broken. In this song, too-feminine endings in the lyric fall clumsily on stressed beats. Scholl does nothing to counter the infelicity; English, of course, is not his mother tongue. In the beautiful title track, which opens the disc, he sings endearingly of a "why-farring straincher." The accompaniments for various combinations of chamber orchestra, lute, dulcimer, and harp tend to be slushy, sentimental, and over-fussy. The bass uncomfortably parallels the tune in "Salley Gardens" and would have won a big red line through it in old-fashioned harmony classes. Still, on the whole, this is a worthwhile disc. Scholl clearly loves the songs he sings with great tenderness, and he deserves credit for his courage even where the experiment fails. --Rick JonesCustomer Reviews:

Wayfaring Stranger: Folksongs.......2005-10-26
meaning to traditional folk music. The orchestration is just enough to give a haunting sound to each selection. ' Wayfaring stranger' and 'Wild mountain thyme' are two selections that make the purchasing of the CD worth the pice.
Surprisingly good.......2005-03-05
Granted, we do hear quite a lot of strings and even some sound effects that make the music sound dangerously "romantic", or worse, "exotic"...
And yes, the arrangements become very similar to those used by Sarah Brightman, Bocelli and other musical aberrations.... but Scholl's scholarly perfection of voice and delivery save the day. Not only that, but his (limited) potential to characterize the music is in full capacity... especially in the songs where he actually sings in his baritone in a self-contained duet.
Yes, the strings are too warm. And yes, there are parts that could even fit as background music for Disneyworld rides... And yes, it can at times sound cheap and "postcard-ish".........
But, truth be told, sometimes a Coke tastes better than Bordeaux, and sometimes a "Little Debbie" cake hits the spot better than the Sachertorte.
So, if you want to listen to songs that are warm and glowing -albeit effectist-, sung by a first class musician... this album will do the trick.
For those who are new to Scholl, I strongly reccomend his earlier CD's --namely those containing the Handel Arias, the English Lute Songs, and the German Baroque lieder.
As for "Wayfaring Stranger", play close attention to "My Love is a Red Red Rose"... If you've ever felt true love, this is the song to make you cry.
Brilliant.......2005-01-11
This compilation will surely bring this wondrous voice to the attention of a wholly different public to the one which presently adores Andreas, and secondly, it will introduce these folk treasures to an audience at present virtually ignorant of them.
Add this one to your Scholl collection

Along with Michael John LaChiusa and Adam Guettel, Ricky Ian Gordon is one of the Young Turks of New York's musical theater. Like them, Gordon shuns both the accessible pop of a David Yazbek and the bombast of a Frank Wildhorn, preferring instead to write post-Sondheimian art songs. The numbers here (with lyrics by Langston Hughes, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Dorothy Parker, James Agee) span two decades. They are marvelously interpreted by the likes of Audra McDonald, Dawn Upshaw, Darius de Haas, and Judy Blazer. Blazer ambles through "Resumé/Wail/Frustration" with delicious jazz-age wit, while Upshaw once more proves that she's a classical singer with an uncanny flair for the nonclassical repertoire. Note that anyone who's expecting anything resembling a beat is advised to look elsewhere. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:

10,000 Maniacs get caught in your Squirrel Nut Zipper. Ani Difranco meets Joni Mitchel at a Tuba Convention. Ry Cooder presents the Sarah Lawrence Social Club.Powerful Singer/Songwriter Emily Davis is backed by a sparse yet tasty arrangement of unusual instruments on this ten song debut from the spirited NYC acoustic quartet.
This CD was recorded live at legendary Slipstream Studios in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, with no overdubs and very old- school productions values. You can hear the warmth of the mahoganny walls in the studio as these musicians tear it up on song after song. This is a gem for the collection.
