Philosophy: The Best of Bill Hicks

Philosophy: The Best of Bill Hicks

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Bill Hicks was the true heir to Lenny Bruce's legacy of confrontational comedy. While he worked primarily as a stand-up comedian, he was utterly unique in his era. Hicks's incisive observations on religion, society, and depression were darkly hilarious while subtly discomforting. Philosophy brings together some of Hicks's most disturbingly funny routines, compiled from his four CDs on Ryko. Intending to create the feel of one live concert, this collection succeeds quite admirably, thanks to the inclusion of pieces such as "Step on the Gas" (his take on the L.A. riots), "Gays in the Military" (self-explanatory), and "Politics in America." Any fan of Dennis Miller's rants should check the original, and pick up Philosophy: The Best of Bill Hicks. --Mike Johnson

4 out of 5 stars Quintessential "Bill"........2005-10-20

One of the previous reviewers pointed out that this stuff can't compare with the comic genius of the 80's sitcom "My Two Dads." It's probably a goof review, but I SO hope it's not because Bill would certainly get a kick out of a response like that from the Joey Lawrence/Everybody Loves Raymond, side of our population.

If you're looking for a good sample of Bill Hicks comedy, this is a pretty good cd to start with. Some of his best subjects (although some of my favorites are noticably absent: Sharon Stones "talent", Jay Leno's satanic tryst, etc.) Be warned, if you are easily offended, better stick to Jeff Foxworthy, cause Bill pulls no punches, which is why I love him.

In my opinion this guy was not only funny as hell, but a true free-thinker and an exposer of hypocrisy. Something we need more of.

I only wish Bill had lived long enough to skewer "W" in his routine. I think the second Bush woulda truly inspired (sickened) Bill into some of his finest material yet.

RIP Bill.

5 out of 5 stars greatest comedian that ever lived.......2005-10-13

bill hicks was the greatest comedian that ever has graced this earth he puts other comedians like dave chapelle, dane cook and all those other comedy central posers to shame. he made intelligent jokes he deosnt swear just so ppl will laugh like 4th graders when he says f***. He could relate to the audience in a way only he could do. anyone that listens to his stuff can laugh at it because anyone and everyone will get it. he covers everything like hotel rooms, hicks, politics, religion, drugs, pornography, Willie nelson, the military and drugs. No one is safe from his comedy, even i was offended almost by some of his stuff about the military cause i know ppl in the military but i still loved it. his stuff is intelligent he deosnt joke about when he was high he jokes about how the government is wrong about drugs and alcohol. he will make you think and everything you know will change. this should not be the only bill hicks cd you buy. rest in peace man i know your smoking it up in heaven with saint peter because hell is none-smoking

5 out of 5 stars Comic Genius.......2005-08-02

Very unique and opinionated observational comedian who never sold out. Bravo!

4 out of 5 stars Bill Hicks, (not for hicks)........2005-06-28

The more I listen to Bill, the more I realize he is a preacher as much as a comedian. This guy tells it only as he see's it, which is usually how it is. He's quite intelligent and informed, and he makes you think as much as he makes you laugh. Everything is covered on "Philosophy". Drugs, sex, politics, pop culture, evolution, religion, etc. Every curse word in the book is used, and it's all the better for it. As with all great comedians, it's not just what he says, but the delivery that makes this excellent. If you're looking for your first, or only Bill Hicks album, this is it.

4 out of 5 stars "We are the Hooligians!".......2005-03-30

I just bought this CD yesterday. Funny. Some of it was a little much for me, but it had some really great moments. Particularly, "We are the Hooligians!" "what do you mean what am I reading FOR?" and "Pack and a half a day? Why don't you just put on a dress, too?" I've never heard a Bill Hick routine as a whole, but now that I've heard a little I do plan on getting the DVD! The compliation is done really well, too. The only reason I couldn't quite pull myself to give it the full five stars is that Bill only lived up to part of the hype. Yes, he was as funyn as I've heard, but I'd also heard that his veiwpoints were totally different from most comedians. Now, maybe it was different back then, but from what I can tell it's the usual left-wing Atheism that most of the media holds these days. I dunno.... That's not to say it didn't have it's moments. He was a really funny guy. And he's right, though. I've never met a Gideon.........
