These 4 discs present 50 songs from modern rock's most unique and prolific parodist, Weird Al Yankovic. The set is not spiked with outtakes, rarities, or live versions, so fans who already own the majority of Yankovic's catalog will likely want to shy away from this collection, unless they merely live to give money to Weird Al. In his own inimitable fashion, Weird Al skewers almost every major pop-culture trend and puffed-up, pompous pop star. The rest of the songs are celebratorily wacky ditties, the workings of a splendidly talented--and mildly twisted--imagination. --James Conde

Album Description

Maintaining strong indie credibility, this platinum-selling Milwaukee bred alt-rock triop has been called the "original unplugged band." The raw power of their no-frills yet highly emotive acoustic sound-plus the lyrical heft of Gordon Gano's songs-made the Femmes postmodern cult heroes with enormous staying power. In his notes to this, their first career-spanning collection, Rolling Stone's David Fricke states, "The Violent Femmes are what rock & roll must have sounded like at the creation." Hear it on 16 classics including "Blister in the Sun," "Add It Up," "Gone Daddy Gone", "Nightmares," and "American Music."

2 out of 5 stars They Still Can't get It Right.......2006-04-26

Okay, so they're trying to do a proper "Best of" for the Femmes again, and for the third time (counting one import-only) they still can't get it right. It's so annoying when a band who you really love (they were one of my first concerts) puts together a greatest hits package and_it seems intentionally_omits some of the songs you really enjoy and/or hold to be sacred. On Add It Up, their first GH, they somehow found the space to include an answering machine message and the mediocre rant I Hate the TV, but omitted their cover of Children of the Revolution and the wonderful Nightmares. Now, Permanent Record thankfully restores those two, but only gives us 16 songs to AIU's 21(!!) and drops several significant tracks, including the frat party favorite Dance, MF, Dance, the bouncy Out the Window, and the great politically charged Old Mother Reagan (It's only about a minute and a half long, people, you can't tell me there wasn't room!) in favor of their later, lesser work on New Times and Freak Magnet. The good thing about this version is the inclusion of the extended Gone Daddy Gone/I Just Want to Make Love to You jam that shows the Femmes' roots were in acoustic blues as well as punk the way Jesus Walking on the Water exposed their folkie leanings. Maybe someday we'll get the great Violent Femmes anthology that's just waiting out there to be released, but until then, I guess it's back to iTunes for me.

Permanent Record: The Very Best of Violent Femmes

If you're into edgy, indie rock with raw, sometimes shocking lyrics then Permanent Record: The Very Best of Violent Femmes is for you.
Having only really heard Violent Femmes' more radio-friendly tracks such as Blister in the Sun, American Music and Children of the Revolution, the rest of the album was a completely new experience for me.
And a bit of a shocker at that.
From the lusty Gimme the car, which is all about a teenager begging his dad to give lend him a car so he can take his girl out, then goes on to describe exactly what he will do to said girl, in detail, and what she will do to him. And I'm not talking about an innocent trip to the drive-in here.
Then there are the usual angst-ridden tracks about being young and broke, as well as the extremely politically-incorrect track Black Girls, which would probably have resulted in a few disillusioned white groupies.
This is clearly an album for fans of the group which have been around, underground, for a very long time.
If you're not such a big fan, I'd give it a miss.

4 out of 5 stars About as good as it could be........2005-09-12

There are some who would call their self-titled album their "best of", and while it is a great album, this is a good collection too. The first five tracks here are from that album, and are well chosen. Then a couple from "Hallowed Ground", and a couple from "Blind Leading The Naked". From "3" we get only "Nightmares". I personally love that album and still think it's underrated. Toss on "American Music", "Color Me Once" from "The Crow" soundtrack, and a few more of their later songs and this is a fine overview of the Violent Femmes career. If this also included "Prove My Love" and "World We're Living In" I'd have no complaints. Still, this is most of the best.

4 out of 5 stars Not for young ears ! Great energy !.......2005-09-07

Everything I expected with an additional shock here and there. It was a great way to introduce my fiance to this group. Right up his alley.

Robin Banks is one of the best blues vocalists in North America. Her style is rich and incredible, Mark Martin's guitarwork is a great mix of the Texas and Chicago blues styles. This is a good CD and well worth your time.

hey, want to know EVERYTHING about this
Permanent Record: Al In The Box is a four disc compilation boxed set of songs by "Weird Al" Yankovic. It features his favorites songs from his first eight studio albums, plus alternate versions of "My Bologna", "Happy Birthday", "UHF", and the previously unavailable new single, "Headline News". The Andy Warhol-esque cover art and "Headline News" also appear on Yankovic's Greatest Hits Volume II, which was released a month after Permanent Record.

The boxed set also comes with a booklet written by Dr. Demento

Permanent Record went out of print on March 1, 2006, because the artwork was lost.

4 out of 5 stars Weird Al Yankovic.......2006-03-15

Weird Al Yankovic is a great band and this is a great collection of their songs. I mis some great songs on it. The songs 'Armish Paradise', 'weenie in a bottle', 'Bohemian Rap City' and 'I was only kidding' for example. From 2 cd's of Weird Al are no songs at all at this collection! Despite this, it is a great album and y'all should listen to it!!!

5 out of 5 stars My Husband Loves It!.......2006-03-13

My husband is a huge Weird Al fan and has been wanting to convert his tapes over to CD. This collection includes most of his favorite songs and was a super gift for Valentine's Day!

Very please with product and service. I would not hesitate to do business with this person again.

3 out of 5 stars Great for novice Weird Al fans........2004-09-29

About seven years ago I might have given this package 5 stars. This box set was great in its heyday, but I'm afraid it is severely outdated now. I think it's time for a new one. Weird Al Yankovic is definitely famous enough to warrant a second box set. Hell, Led Zeppelin has two box sets. Why shouldn't Al?

This only covers Al's career from early 1980, to about 1993 or thereabouts. Nothing from "Bad Hair Day, Running With Scissors," or "Poodle Hat" is included, not to mention his latter-day film theme songs like "Spy Hard," or "Polkamon." If you are one of those people who lives in the past, though, or one of those misguided fools who thinks Al should have retired some time back in 1989, then this is the perfect purchase for you. It has a couple of rarities that can't be heard anywhere else, like Al's original accordion version of "My Bologna," and "Headline News" the parody of "Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm" by the Crash Test Dummies, which was written specially for this box set. The brief bio booklet that comes with the set is pretty cool too. It was written by Dr. Demento, and it chronicles Al's youth, college days as an architecture major, and his rise to fame. Overall, this is a great buy for the casual fan, but if you are like me and you are obsessed, I suggest you do like I did and just buy all of the CDs.

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent soundtrack.......2005-01-28

This is an amazing Joe Strummer soundtrack, in a similar vein to Jimmy Cliff's 'The Harder They Come' (ie. massively underrated, much better than the original film, and only 1/2 the songs are actually by Joe).

'Trash City', 'Baby the Trans' and the other Strummer tracks are fun blasts of noise which remind us of who was the real talent in the Clash. You also get a fine Lou Reed track ('Something Happened', wouldn't have sounded out of place on his 'New York' album, a Stranglers cover and a couple of weaker tracks.

I first saw Joe live in concert solo just after this came out, and he was absolutely amazing, so I guess that makes me a little biased, but this is a really strong album, and I still get a kick out of it all these years later.
