The San Pedro, California, audience is the hostage referred to in the title of this mid-1980s recording, but clearly they love every minute of it. It's indicative of this infamous, lowlife-lovin' poet's no-nonsense, tough-talking skill that for half the recording the crowd is nearly pissing themselves with laughter. Hostage has to be one of the rowdiest poetry records ever released, which makes sense considering how drunk Bukowski plainly is. The drink never gets in the way of his delivery, the tough, beautiful lines and moronically macho ones always landing on target, on cue. Bukowski delivers odes to dead Roman poets, lands a few good jokes, and--most crucially--offers up a few Raymond Carver-esque glimpses straight into the human soul. No document showcases Bukowski's radiant humor and occasional grace as succinctly as this intoxicating disc. --Mike McGonigal.

Amusing at times, but disappointing on the whole.......2006-05-23
He makes it clear that he's just making money, just wants to pass the time, that he doesn't think much of the crowd. I love it. But it's not poetry.
He only reads about 10 poems during the entirety of the hour. It seems like he wants to offend the audience, get kicked out, and go finish his booze; his poems were not on his mind that night. Not much was at all, in fact. I love hearing this guy read normally but this is just a marketing ploy and a waste of money. The material he recorded in the 70's is far better, before he became "the working man;s hero poet" officially. This is more like a recording of Lenny Bruce than poetry. Still, it is worth listening to just to get a sense of how charismatic Bukowski was and how he could get away with just about anything.
Try "Poems and Insults" instead.......2005-07-18
Hostage will make you laugh out loud in an empty room........2004-05-09
Very f-ing funny.......2003-04-10
The version from audible.com comes in 8 tracks, clearly preferable to a CD with one hour long track.
bukowski at his drunken best.......2002-04-20
the first time i listened i thought,"is this really what hank sounds like?" his voice is a bit like a dirty old man's at times but ,thats what he was.the poetry runs the spectrum from beautiful to perverse as always.if you have more than 2 of his books, pick this up.you'll like it.

ATDI + piano = brazil, which in turn = flawless progressive music..........2006-08-12
it's really hard to believe how great the music is here. the band released an ep back in 2002 and released this album back in 2004 as a debut full length for fearless (mere coincidence?, same label that signed ATDI). the music is flawless and is perfect and that's impressive for a band from indiana and for their first album.
in addition to the same style/vocals of ATDI, the lyrics coincide with ATDI as well. the lyrics at times are very deep, raw, complex, and confusing at times. very typical ATDI lyrics. not only is this album so damn perfect, i can't believe these guys are under the radar still two years after this was released. i haven't heard much about these guys besides the research i did on my own to find their music, but i'm sure that will change oct. 3 when they are set to release their second full-length "philosophy of velocity", (which i'm excited to see what musical boundaries they break this time).
to conclude my review, brazil are a very talented band that is a melting pot of many genres (emo, indie, progressive, experimental, post-hardcore, punk) with screaming influences of at the drive in but with lots of piano and no screaming. the music atmosphere is very beautiful and the music is unbelievably good. just as it took ATDI a while to become recognized as one of the most influential bands of the decade, brazil too will eventually get to that level and i can't wait to hear more from this very talented band. the whole cd is solid and i highly recommend you buy this...
The meaning of life, indeed........2006-02-06
Progressive.......2005-12-16
art rock and maybe a little post-punk/hardcore. The production is a lot better, and the songs arrangements are a lot more complex, and thoughtful. Newby's lyrical content sometimes, borderlines with Mars Volta/At the Drive in's Cedric Bixler (meaning very ambiguous). Brazil along with bands like Dredg, Circa Survive, and The Fall of Troy, are doing a lot of good for indie music, and shouldn't be under appreciated.
Now There's 2 Hostages.......2004-09-09
1) A Hostage: solid start to the album, good lyrics -"your lips are dripped with poison, the feeling will last forever", some cool distorted vocals, cool guitar, a good kickoff to "Hostage"
2) The Novemberist: starts off on a slower side, but builds towards the end, I like the cool, spacey guitar in this song.
3) IO: one of the songs I saw Brazil preform live. It was pretty amazing the vocalist actually got off stage and sang form the crowd for a little while, really cool song, cool little plugging piano on this song during the chorus.
4) Escape: Interesting lyrics during this song , and one of my favourite chorus' on the album, really cool bridge part with strong rhythm, and high pitched guitar turned distorted followed by piano.
5) We: Unconventional lyrical structure where all lyrics are sung by the end of the first conventional verse followed by amazing piano and guitar, and another run through the chorus
6) The Iconoclast: My second favourite song on the album, an amazing chorus with great guitar and lyrics, really cool piano parts, great bass and guitar near the end.
7) Zentropa: good guitar and bass on opening and one of the best guitar riffs on the album, I like the falsetto vocals (not Claudio high mind you) a really cool chorus
8) Fall Into: stellar base intro, accompanied with piano for the first chorus, kind of a groove song to start definitely one of the slowest songs on the album, which is great thing trust me, once it gets midway you'll agree too.
9) Metropol: My favourite song on the album, you have to hear it to believe it, quick vocals to start the verses, everything is tightly wound to perfection on this track; vocals, bass, guitar, piano, drums and wait till the 2 minute 30 second mark, if this doesn't impress you maybe you shouldn't be listening to progressive emo.
10) Aventine: the grooviest chorus on the album sweet piano with a real plugging along feel, I love the combination of lyrics and piano all throughout this song. Really cool breakdown "watch me, turn things around"
11) Form and Function (or for the Greek out there ÖïñÌá Í ÖãÇÊÉéÍR): fully instrumental song cool and funky flows seamlessly into the final track...
12) Fatale and Futique: Really cool base lines song retains the same structure as Form and function until the Amazing final verse of the album.
If your into Progressive emo, or even if you aren't... I suggest you go to www.ahostage.com where you can preview the entire album. And if brazil play in your town go and check them out because you won't be disappointed by either.

"Outstanding score".......2005-10-10
Unexpectedly Good.......2005-09-03
"Phenomenal".......2005-07-01
You can almost consider this work a symphonic synthesis in 24 "spectacular" movements. I can not imagine why any filmakers consider Hans Zimmer for composing, pretending to make his synthesizer sound like an orchestra.
I don`t recall any soundtrack before this that can compare on all counts.
Highly Recommended!
