The San Pedro, California, audience is the hostage referred to in the title of this mid-1980s recording, but clearly they love every minute of it. It's indicative of this infamous, lowlife-lovin' poet's no-nonsense, tough-talking skill that for half the recording the crowd is nearly pissing themselves with laughter. Hostage has to be one of the rowdiest poetry records ever released, which makes sense considering how drunk Bukowski plainly is. The drink never gets in the way of his delivery, the tough, beautiful lines and moronically macho ones always landing on target, on cue. Bukowski delivers odes to dead Roman poets, lands a few good jokes, and--most crucially--offers up a few Raymond Carver-esque glimpses straight into the human soul. No document showcases Bukowski's radiant humor and occasional grace as succinctly as this intoxicating disc. --Mike McGonigal.

1 out of 5 stars Amusing at times, but disappointing on the whole.......2006-05-23

After about a half an hour of Bukowski sparring with the audience and getting drunk (admittedly amusing at times, his cynical wit getting more and more depraved as the so-called "reading" goes on), I found myself wishing I had purchased some other spoken record by him.

He makes it clear that he's just making money, just wants to pass the time, that he doesn't think much of the crowd. I love it. But it's not poetry.

He only reads about 10 poems during the entirety of the hour. It seems like he wants to offend the audience, get kicked out, and go finish his booze; his poems were not on his mind that night. Not much was at all, in fact. I love hearing this guy read normally but this is just a marketing ploy and a waste of money. The material he recorded in the 70's is far better, before he became "the working man;s hero poet" officially. This is more like a recording of Lenny Bruce than poetry. Still, it is worth listening to just to get a sense of how charismatic Bukowski was and how he could get away with just about anything.

3 out of 5 stars Try "Poems and Insults" instead.......2005-07-18

This has some great moments but the poems are weaker than "P&I" and the "rejoinders" with the audience keep derailing things. Maybe you had to be there. Interesting but not essential.

5 out of 5 stars Hostage will make you laugh out loud in an empty room........2004-05-09

This CD is one of a kind. You won't find a better Bukowski CD if not a better CD in general. Bukowski has a relationship with the listeners like no other. He yells at members in the crowd and laughs with others. Bukowski goes from drunk to drunker as the CD goes on which adds to the hilarity of it all. This is an absolute MUST for your bukowski collection.

4 out of 5 stars Very f-ing funny.......2003-04-10

Hostage is a hilarious recording of a Bukowski poetry reading that is a treasure to those of us too young to have heard him in person, especially during his heyday. Bukowski gives this reading at the optimum level of intoxication - audibly drunk but still quite lucid. If you have read and enjoyed his books, then this recording is a treat.

The version from audible.com comes in 8 tracks, clearly preferable to a CD with one hour long track.

4 out of 5 stars bukowski at his drunken best.......2002-04-20

i've had this reading for several years now,and i still love it.i enjoy listening to it on the long drive to new york every month.
the first time i listened i thought,"is this really what hank sounds like?" his voice is a bit like a dirty old man's at times but ,thats what he was.the poetry runs the spectrum from beautiful to perverse as always.if you have more than 2 of his books, pick this up.you'll like it.

5 out of 5 stars ATDI + piano = brazil, which in turn = flawless progressive music..........2006-08-12

like it says in my title, brazil sound similiar to at the drive in, with the addition of the piano. although, the vocals and music style sound similiar to ATDI, brazil do not scream at all or have any sporadic outbursts which makes it an easier listen for people who are turned off by that side of ATDI.

it's really hard to believe how great the music is here. the band released an ep back in 2002 and released this album back in 2004 as a debut full length for fearless (mere coincidence?, same label that signed ATDI). the music is flawless and is perfect and that's impressive for a band from indiana and for their first album.

in addition to the same style/vocals of ATDI, the lyrics coincide with ATDI as well. the lyrics at times are very deep, raw, complex, and confusing at times. very typical ATDI lyrics. not only is this album so damn perfect, i can't believe these guys are under the radar still two years after this was released. i haven't heard much about these guys besides the research i did on my own to find their music, but i'm sure that will change oct. 3 when they are set to release their second full-length "philosophy of velocity", (which i'm excited to see what musical boundaries they break this time).

to conclude my review, brazil are a very talented band that is a melting pot of many genres (emo, indie, progressive, experimental, post-hardcore, punk) with screaming influences of at the drive in but with lots of piano and no screaming. the music atmosphere is very beautiful and the music is unbelievably good. just as it took ATDI a while to become recognized as one of the most influential bands of the decade, brazil too will eventually get to that level and i can't wait to hear more from this very talented band. the whole cd is solid and i highly recommend you buy this...

5 out of 5 stars The meaning of life, indeed........2006-02-06

First, I must commend Brazil on their album title, which notes that they try to put no less than the meaning of life in this album. Ingenious, and very true to the band: progressive, experimental, whatever you want to call them, they definitely push the borders of music classification, and do it in style. I've seen this album & band classified as many different things, but any true music fan knows the futility of categorization when it comes to great bands. Brazil is simply a band very good at fleshing out their songs in a way that gives "Hostage" a coherency most bands lack their entire careers. And this is their first album, people! Expect big things from Brazil.

5 out of 5 stars Progressive.......2005-12-16

This is quite a step up from their Ep; don't get me wrong, I still love Dasein. I guess this can be best described as alt, indie, prog,
art rock and maybe a little post-punk/hardcore. The production is a lot better, and the songs arrangements are a lot more complex, and thoughtful. Newby's lyrical content sometimes, borderlines with Mars Volta/At the Drive in's Cedric Bixler (meaning very ambiguous). Brazil along with bands like Dredg, Circa Survive, and The Fall of Troy, are doing a lot of good for indie music, and shouldn't be under appreciated.

5 out of 5 stars Now There's 2 Hostages.......2004-09-09

The first non EP release by Brazil is an amazing one. Fluid and distorted guitar rifts, finger tapping rhythms, groovy base, normal and falsetto vocals. With these mentioned you might be thinking of bands like Coheed and Cambria and Mars Volta, however Brazil adds some of their own progressive emo flair with their unique piano addition, along with some other twists...can you say saxophone.
1) A Hostage: solid start to the album, good lyrics -"your lips are dripped with poison, the feeling will last forever", some cool distorted vocals, cool guitar, a good kickoff to "Hostage"
2) The Novemberist: starts off on a slower side, but builds towards the end, I like the cool, spacey guitar in this song.
3) IO: one of the songs I saw Brazil preform live. It was pretty amazing the vocalist actually got off stage and sang form the crowd for a little while, really cool song, cool little plugging piano on this song during the chorus.
4) Escape: Interesting lyrics during this song , and one of my favourite chorus' on the album, really cool bridge part with strong rhythm, and high pitched guitar turned distorted followed by piano.
5) We: Unconventional lyrical structure where all lyrics are sung by the end of the first conventional verse followed by amazing piano and guitar, and another run through the chorus
6) The Iconoclast: My second favourite song on the album, an amazing chorus with great guitar and lyrics, really cool piano parts, great bass and guitar near the end.
7) Zentropa: good guitar and bass on opening and one of the best guitar riffs on the album, I like the falsetto vocals (not Claudio high mind you) a really cool chorus
8) Fall Into: stellar base intro, accompanied with piano for the first chorus, kind of a groove song to start definitely one of the slowest songs on the album, which is great thing trust me, once it gets midway you'll agree too.
9) Metropol: My favourite song on the album, you have to hear it to believe it, quick vocals to start the verses, everything is tightly wound to perfection on this track; vocals, bass, guitar, piano, drums and wait till the 2 minute 30 second mark, if this doesn't impress you maybe you shouldn't be listening to progressive emo.
10) Aventine: the grooviest chorus on the album sweet piano with a real plugging along feel, I love the combination of lyrics and piano all throughout this song. Really cool breakdown "watch me, turn things around"
11) Form and Function (or for the Greek out there ÖïñÌá Í ÖãÇÊÉéÍR): fully instrumental song cool and funky flows seamlessly into the final track...
12) Fatale and Futique: Really cool base lines song retains the same structure as Form and function until the Amazing final verse of the album.

If your into Progressive emo, or even if you aren't... I suggest you go to www.ahostage.com where you can preview the entire album. And if brazil play in your town go and check them out because you won't be disappointed by either.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2004-09-08

This CD is the one of the most original cds of the year so far. You'd never think keyboards and saxaphones with electric guitars would sounds amazing but somehow they pulled it off beautifully. I think everyone needs to check out this CD!!!!!!!

    5 out of 5 stars "Outstanding score".......2005-10-10

Truly a remarkable achievement. There are lyrical moments, but the score impresses with its powerful expressiveness and fascinating orchestration. Alexandre Desplat is undoubtedly France's best-known and most successful composer of music for films in recent years. His work outside of France has included music for "The Luzhin Defense", "Girl with a Pearl Ear-Ring", and "Birth", although he has an extensive list of film credits to his name at home and has just won the top award at the International Film Festival in Berlin for his score to "De battre mon coeur s'est arrêté". The present recording is an excellent example of his work as composer, orchestrator and conductor, as well as producer, since the music is presented in such a way as to form a cohesive emotional symphonic experience. Even if you have not seen the film, and even if you are not necessarily interested in film music, you will enjoy this fascinating score, beautifully played and recorded.

    4 out of 5 stars Unexpectedly Good.......2005-09-03

The film looked intriguing enough, but at the title credits you realize that people put an awful lot of care & attention into this project. The music is no exception. Very unexpectedly melodic (and good) score gives film additional depth, flavour.

    5 out of 5 stars "Phenomenal".......2005-07-01

Alexandre Desplat is a composer to be reckoned with. This is the unconditional standard by which all others can be judged. Mr. Desplat is the composer as well as conductor for this spectacular movie and score. Played with precision by the London Symphony Orchestra. I suspect it is his daughter or wife who shares with us her beautiful voice.
You can almost consider this work a symphonic synthesis in 24 "spectacular" movements. I can not imagine why any filmakers consider Hans Zimmer for composing, pretending to make his synthesizer sound like an orchestra.
I don`t recall any soundtrack before this that can compare on all counts.
    Highly Recommended!

        5 out of 5 stars underappreciated.......2007-07-05

i believe this is the only record this band put out (full-length, at least), which is too bad. it has a pretty east coast, post-hardcore feel to it, which might get it lumped in with some "emo" stuff, in a "texas is the reason" sense. but if this is emo, it's emo in a gruff, honest way, not a weepy one. in the vein of avail or maybe hot water music, but not identical to either. these guys managed to make a record that can probably truly appeal to a fairly wide audience, without pandering to any of them (punk songs and piano ballads span the gap, and aren't embarrassing together). this is not a punk record in the simple sense. no speedy, poppy three chord bursts or fruitty lyrics here, but instead there are honest lyrics, no frills, straight ahead guitar parts, and a quality that i can only describe as these guys just wanting to get several things off their chests without a care as to whether the result is marketable or not. and they seem to have done it, not apologized for it, not really toured in support of it (too bad, i would like to have seen em), and went back to their jobs, content just to let this speak for itself. a classic record that will likely never get it's due.
