Former Fox sitcom star Martin Lawrence's second CD serves up more of what made him one of the most visible comics of the 1990s--friendly, funky raps on common standup topics: sex, money, and the eternal struggle between men and women. All standard stuff, but ably done. Recorded live in 1995, the CD has a pleasant, freeform feeling; Funk It! uses the comedian's relaxed delivery and persona to good effect. Lawrence expounds on Lorena Bobbitt and the unhappy travels of her husband's penis, cross-eyed women, airline travel, and idiots who use cellular phones (not turned on, of course) to try to impress; all yield laughs, if no surprises. The language is a little salty and a little sexist, but if you liked Lawrence's earlier CD, Talkin' Shit, you know precisely what to expect. --Michael Gerber

Too many reissue compilations are content to merely slice 'n' dice familiar catalog choices in not particularly original ways. But this four-disc, 91-track trove of obscure '70s R&B and funk from Warner-distributed labels great and small argues there's still treasure to be gleaned from studio vaults--a five-hour groove-fest that's as interested in shaking booty as in opening ears. Even the genre's groundbreaking usual suspects (Wilson Pickett, the Bar-Kays, Curtis Mayfield, Earth, Wind & Fire, et al) are represented by selections that aren't immediately familiar, while Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin serves up a radically different, previously unreleased take of "Rock Steady." Still other stars contribute their sonic touches to some of the lesser-known cuts, as witnessed by the patent trippiness of Sly Stone alter-egos 6ix and Stanga on "I'm Just Like You" and "Little Sister," respectively; the stark, party-not-so-hearty contrast of the Mayfield-written-and-produced "Hard Times" by Baby Huey & Baby Sisters; and the Meters' version of "Tampin'," released under the moniker of the Rhine Oaks. Sequenced in rough chronological order, it's a savvy window into a musical evolution as well, with the rhythmic guitars, organ swells, and horn flourishes of traditional '60s R&B giving way to sinewy synths and increasingly chunky bass lines as the decade grooves on. While savvy hip-hoppers will note that many of the rarities here have already been repurposed by shrewd mixers, it's a revelation to hear them in their original form. A compelling deconstruction of an often clichéd and too-narrowly-defined genre, this is an anthology that showcases music that has influenced such contemporary artists as Tupac, the Beastie Boys, Snoop Dogg, and Kanye West, annotated by many of the original musicians who set the dance floor in motion. --Jerry McCulleyAlbum Description

I'm only 25 years old. Every time I play this set, I feel like I'm at a 70's block party, chillin' in a long black cadillac fleetwood and scoping out some foxy mamas with hot pants and thigh high leather boots
(that's how good the music sounds). With 20 plus tracks each per disc, you can't help but be amazed with the consistent quality of the music.
All I gotta say is buy this set and let the funk be your guide to love, happiness, and your rites of passage to throw it on down and dance your
a-- off!!! If you ain't diggin on this, you're diggin a hole for yourself!
Long live the funk baby!
Amazing. Mind blowing. Worth every penny. And so on........2007-02-04

Soul-tastic... All Hail Rhino! Nobody knows box like Rhino knows box.......2007-01-14
I won't say there's no filler--by filler I mean the cover tunes--and I'm confused as to why "What So Never The Dance" is credited to the Houseguests when this is a longtime Bootsy Collins track? What, is Bootsy in trouble with Warner Brothers and can't re-release his own stuff under his own name anymore?
But disc one is an absolute gem--you can't make your own mix better than they've done it here. If you're a fan of James Brown, Parliament, Otis Redding, Sly Stone, the aforementioned Bootsy, Tower Of Power, Prince, early Stevie Wonder, Motown, Isaac Hayes, then you shouldn't be without this set.
Absolutely worth buying.

Junking '70s-funk cliches for a stripped-down sound (keyboards and synthesizers replaced the horns) built around a hard-rockin' guitar and a tougher-than-tough rhythm section--all topped off with a heapin' helping of humor--this Minneapolis-based sextet was once the best funk band in the land. This second LP is the best single album from the act, which soon imploded, owing to an over-abundance of talent. Bug-eyed vocalist Morris Day and guitarist Jesse Johnson went on to semi-successful solo careers; keyboardist Jimmy Jam and bassist Terry Lewis became a mega-platinum writing/production team (Janet Jackson, most notably); drummer extraordinaire Jellybean Johnson and keyboardist Monte Moir were the other members. Co-produced by Day and Jamie Starr (a.k.a. Prince), this six-song 1982 effort sports three wall-rattling party-starters: the self-explantory "Wild and Loose," the tongue-in-cheek dance tune "The Walk," and the still-percolating, knotty-but-nice rhythms of "777-9311." Toss in a "New Wave"-style rocker, a droll take on the obligatory love-man ballad, and the band's straight-faced answer to the titular question ("Time to fix your clock!") is O-B-V-I-O-U-S. --Don WallerCustomer Reviews:

Long before Snoop Dogg, Eminem, or Xzibit came into the picture, Dr. Dre had already found the perfect MC in the D.O.C., a Texas transplant to Los Angeles. Before he tragically lost his vocal chords in an auto accident, the D.O.C. was easily one of the fiercest lyricists that the West Coast had ever witnessed--a combination of Ice Cube's scowling aggressiveness but balanced with a sophistication that would have rivaled KRS-One at his best. With a ragga-tinged flow, he could drop lyrical bombs with fury on "It's Funky Enough" or sublimely style for "The Formula." Dre supported the D.O.C. with a bevy of funk-laden tracks that were pre-Chronic, meaning that the feel was rough and rugged vs. wet and sticky. Had his voice survived, there's little doubt that the D.O.C. would have become one of Cali's greatest MCs ever. All the supporting evidence is on this album. --Oliver WangCustomer Reviews:

Classic West Coast/Southern Rap Debut!.......2007-05-10
The album is produced in its entirety by Dr. Dre, and combines street-ready breakbeats with Dre's preference for Soul and Funk samples (keen listeners will note that on several songs there is not an outright sample but rather a live studio reinterpretation of key riffs).
The debut single is here, "It's Funky Enough", as is "The D.O.C. and the Doctor", "Mind Blowin'" and the guitar-rocker "Beautiful but Deadly". The best song is the mellow "The Formula", which samples Marvin Gaye's "Makes Me Wanna Holler" (even better is the extended remix). Also of note is "The Grand Finale", a posse cut featuring Dr. Dre', Eazy-E, MC Ren and Ice Cube (and DJ Yella on drums), which would be the final recording of all the N.W.A. members before the death of Eazy-E in 1995. The album would sell over 1 million copies.
Lyrically, D.O.C. had a cadence that was clear and articulate that couldn't be automatically pegged by New York purists as Southern or West Coast. He also generally avoided profanity and his thematic content wasn't entrenched in gang life & violent boasts. Tragically, a car accident permanently damaged D.O.C.'s voice, so this is really his defining artistic statement.
Despite being in-print for many years now, this album truly deserves a deluxe re-release. Remixes, 12-inch/EP cuts and music videos could be included.

Isaac Hayes' 1969 solo debut Hot Buttered Soul set a soulful tone for the decade that followed, influencing innumerable artists and turning on a more conventional audience to the genre. Therefore it comes as no surprise that three quarters of that record are included on this compilation from his 1968-`77 Stax Records resume (though they are heavily edited to fit the 32-song, two-CD format). Renowned as one of his generation's greatest songwriters and arrangers, Hayes punctuates his creations with hints of r&b, funk, jazz and soul. Examples here include the indelible "Theme From Shaft," a funked-up cover of Burt Bacharach's and Hal David's "The Look of Love," the slow-grooving "Do Your Thing" and a previously unreleased gospel standard, "His Eye Is on the Sparrow." The inspired packaging includes a four-track DVD that features a trio of Hayes' performances from the 1972 WATTSTAX Festival at the Los Angeles Coliseum--providing as much evidence of the magnitude of Hayes' esteem as this starter set for anyone seeking an introduction to a legendary artist. --Scott HolterCustomer Reviews:

You Should Dig It..........2005-11-22
"Hot Buttered Soul" was the kick-off for a career that eventually came to define mid-seventies soul music, and it still stands as an all-time classic. It is amply represented here by standout extended jams like "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" and "Walk On By". It also moves through eleven subsequent albums, with mixed results that are nonetheless continually fascinating. At times, he sounds like a spitting image for Barry White, but with an unconventional flair for going further than any other funk soul brother would risk. Photos show Hayes wearing clothing that would make the king of the pimps jealous (head to toe in fur, or head to toe in leopard skin...you get the idea), while being referred to as `Black Moses'. It was a singular, unforgettable image that suits every track on this disk.
As a visual aid, Disk One represents the sound of mink pants and an open-chested shirt while cruising in a gold-tinged Cadillac with pink naugahyde interior. "The Theme from Shaft," "By the Time I Get to Phoenix", "Hyperbolicsyllabic-Sesquedalymistic" and "Never Can Say Goodbye" all capture Hayes at his glorious, over-the-top peak. Disk two, meanwhile, is the aural equivalent of carelessly discarded chain mail, crushed velvet sofas, red light bulbs, and a bottle of Mateus Rose. "Walk On By," "If Loving You Is Wrong", "Baby I'm-A Want You" and "Let's Stay Together" all stress the love-man vibe like burning incense. Far from consistent, though, there are a few mis-steps. Like everything else here, though, even the clunkers are spectacular in their badness. "Three Tough Guys" and "Come Live with Me" are both trite, incredibly overwrought, and poorly written - clunkers of astounding proportions, and all the more fascinating for it. The videos on the DVD disk are fabulous, though, both musically and historically, featuring three great songs/visuals from the often out-of-print film "Wattstax", plus the incredibly funny and ridiculous "Chocolate Salty Balls" video, from the `South Park' cartoon. Inconsistent but always fascinating, this is one CD collection that should not be missed.

OFFICAL HIP-HOP REVIEWER.......2006-12-13
i would just like to say i do agree with the fact eazy e wasn't fake but could be seen as fake in the music he makes, due to the fact be barely wrote any of his songs and was keeping a lot of the profit N.W.A made for him self, and if you guys have read my other reviews you'll know i often bring this guy "tweedy bird loc" into my review thats simply because not many have heard of this artist and he's exremly good at bringing out great albums.
tweedy says a lot in his album about how easy e sold alot of his friends out when he became wealthy (stinking dirty rich) and tweedy also goes on to say how easy doesn't come down compton anymore ( tweedy was from the same crip gang as easy) So this could be seen as easy been fake in what he's lyrics talk about. i personaly love easy e and think he did a great job of keeping his reputation after dr. dre not only "diss'd" him on his publicly successful album " THE CRONIC" but left the ruthless records family.
as for winning against death row records, well i dont know about that, they had a lot of brilliant rappers on the label at that time, but i do think easy e would of and did beat dr. dre. anyway back to the album. if your a fan of easy e and and you liked the "EAZY DUZ IT" album then i think you'll be impressed with this album of eazy e's, and like i always say the best albums are when there's "beef" ( not the stuff you cook rucky, beef is when two or more people dont like each other due to something said/done ) it's not hard to see who eazy e had "beef" with as the name of the albums "itz on DR. DRE.
if you for some wierd reason didn't like eazy e "EAZY DUZ IT" then i would try this album, it's a little diffrent from the "EAZY DUZ IT" album, he's got a diffrent style of beat, the way the lyrics are put together seems to be the same but he use's the G-FUNK beat. which is very simular to dr. dre's beat's ie: still dre, and a lot of dre's beats of "the cronic"
to sum up the album, the albums brilliant for easy listening and has plennty of funky yet dark hard core beats, it's got a lot of what i call compton style of beats. the album also has dresta featuring in a song or two whos another compton artist, fan's of eazy e will love this album and if you liked N.W.A i think you'll love the album too.
people who wheren't that keen on "EAZY DUZ IT" should try this album, the albums going pretty cheap so you wont be paying much for it and it's a classic that doesn't take any getting use to where some albums take time to grow on you, this grows on you straight away. hope you hip-hop fans stay true, your on the right line looking up eazy e, as long as you stay away from "USER, R. KELLY, FAT MAN SCOOP AND THE REST OF EM TRYING TO CHANGE THE HIP-HOP STYLE AND REPUTATION"
Awesome.......2006-10-18
I loved both albums. Dre's Chronic was more complete, it had different themes running through and Snoop was great.
But Eazy-E had a more edge on his album and if it was a true dis war, Eazy was victorous. Smart idea to get real hardcore gangsters and future convicts like Dresta and B.G. Knocck out to share in the dissing of Dre.
Great album. I recommend to all.

Polygram tells the JB story better than anyone yet with their series of two-CD James Brown reissues, which began with Soul Pride: The Instrumentals (1960-69), continued into the mid-1960s and onward with Foundations of Funk and this set, and then ventured into the 1980s with Dead On: The Heavy Funk. This triumphant, perfectly programmed two-disc package dredges 26 neglected gems and beloved jewels from the prolific predisco years, a time when Brown's powers were in sharp form. Waist-deep in fat freaky funk, pugilistic horn arrangements, looping modal grooves, and tuff blaxploitational kitsch--primo monster funk from the source. Fans of Parliament's nonstop party jam absolutely need this to know from whence their hardcore jollies came. --John CorbettCustomer Reviews:

Keyboardist Duke, after stints with Billy Cobham, Cannonball Adderly, Jean-Luc Ponty, Frank Zappa (to stunning effect), and Don Ellis's big band, graduated with this varied 1977 program to jazz-fusion star status. The recording features popish jazz grooves with plenty of spikes inlaid, including rock-solid and heavy fusion, '70s funk, love-lorn ballads, and sections of bristling ensemble playing. One can hear what it was that Zappa liked in the eclecticist Duke: raw-nerved electronic keyboards with shifting rhythms and a sense of the funk, fun, and burlesque that Zappa relished. Especially deserving of mention among Duke's band members are searing guitarist Charles Icarus Johnson, thudding bassist Byron Miller, and drummer Leon Ndugu Chancler--propulsive, rapid-fire, time- and shape-shifting. But they all got the funk. --Peter MonaghanCustomer Reviews:

sounds of "Omi (Fresh Water)" and the pure bombastic fusion of
"Lemme At It".Despite it's availability "Reach for It" is still pretty much early, firey George Duke-before mushy ballads took
over, even on pure pop-R&B crooning like "Just For You" and the
funky pop of "Searchin' My Mind".Although this is excellent through and through I still suggest Duke's BASF/MPS recordings
in the mid 70's (such as "Liberated Fantasies") as good referance
points-all those albums are only available on vinyl but worth
searching for.Look for those but buy this too-it's fantastic!

Amazon.com's Best of 1998
James Brown had just recorded "Say It Loud--I'm Black and I'm Proud" when he visited Dallas in summer 1968. Mixing Soul Brother Number One's more traditional gospel- and jump-blues-influenced early hits with the funk he was still developing ("Cold Sweat," "Licking Stick--Licking Stick"), Say It Live and Loud captures that show in a time-capsule piece that's hardly just a historical document: it brings the full-force power of Brown, Maceo Parker, and the rest of the "James Brown Orchestra" front and center. --Rickey WrightAmazon.com
James Brown had just recorded "Say It Loud--I'm Black and I'm Proud," the anthem that would become his last pop-chart top 10 entry for nearly two decades, when he visited Dallas on a summer 1968 leg of his then-ongoing tour. Mixing Soul Brother Number One's more traditional gospel- and jump-blues-influenced early hits with the funk he was still developing ("Cold Sweat," "Licking Stick--Licking Stick"), Say It Loud and Live captures that show in a time-capsule piece that's hardly just a historical document: it brings the full-force power of Brown, Maceo Parker, and the rest of the "James Brown Orchestra" front and center. And the memorabilia-laden CD booklet ("We know the Negro deejay won't play this record ... but every BLACK deejay will play this record!") is as essential as the music. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:

KANSAS CITY?.......2007-01-27
It sounds like they hadn't been with him for awhile and he's welcoming them back. Does anyone know about this?
WILD, WILD STUFF!! PLAY IT LIVE AND LOUD!.......2007-01-06
BUT- let us never forget the band that James Brown fired (minutes before they could quit) that night, with their lead, by the name of Maceo. They appear here, and show us, quite loud and powerfully- that James Brown had already established what was the face of Funk music. And while that band that James Brown replaced them with has gone down as legends in their own right- they had nothing on this beast.
This era of the Godfather, is without a doubt his wildest and craziest era overall. Ooozing with raw energy- this live performance showcases it nice and tight in one very solid package.
James Brown wrote the tunes, orchestrated the band, and shows he's got the moves and the pipes like nobody else.. but the band itself is capable of anything, it seems. Listen to the change-ups from one song to the next. Theres no breaks anywhere. Proffesional Jazz Musicians practice this type of stuff for over thirty years- these guys were in their twenties- hitting every nail on the head. They are trained and true, and no one falls out of step, yet they suprise you at every turn. Three numbers in the middle without James Brown... still smokin'. Maceo shows us all a little thing called The Tighten Up...
One action packed scorcher of a show, fans of any type of music will likely be blown away by this disc.
God Bless The Godfather of Soul.
Ladies and Gentlemen James Brown, JAMES BROWN!.......2006-12-08
Powerful, funky, historic, a bundle of frenetic energy~ The thing that knocks me out about this recording besides some of the best cuts of the band of that period live is the SHOW. You get to hear the roles of the band members in the presentation that was "The James Brown Show". This was not just a singer and a band that got up there and played and entertained for a couple of hours or so. This was a multifaceted entertainment machine! Tight, slick and having a great time being the best! Do not miss an instant of this recording, even the introductions and goodbyes.
Maceo is a revelation on this recording. If you think of him as a rhythmic alto player, wait till you hear the burning tenor solo on Suds. I mean, James Brown has left the stage and the energy level gets higher!!! How can that be? Not to mention a developing front man in his own right. He is not alone, the band is great, the names that you know inventing this music right there on stage. Peewee Ellis wrote great, flexible arrangements and band turns on a dime!! James cues, the band jumps!
By the end of the CD, tempos are flyin'!! Cold sweat is waaaay fast. Not the kind of thing you record for a 45 but exactly what is needed this particular evening with this crowd. The Soulbrother #1 reads the crowd perfectly and takes them further than they expected they could go. Ya just gotta keep it goin'. Keep winding em', keep em' dancin' up and send them higher, higher higher!!!! James dancing, women screaming, Excuse me, excuse me, excuse me while I boogaloo."
This is a show!!!
