Déjà-Blues is Steve Halpern's reinterpretation of one of his own recordings, 1978's Hear to Eternity. Altered slightly (via additional instrumentation, including Halpern recording bass tracks for the first time in two decades), the new version amplifies what Halpern calls the "world fusion" vibe of the original and delivers a satisfying, globally accented soundtrack for meditation and moments of trance dance. Though at times the bass parts lapse into predictability, the glowing "In the Hall of Records" can summon thoughts of Patrick O'Hearn, and the soulful, wordless vocalizing of guest Melissa Phillippe, a modern-day addition, gives the title track a sensual, Pink Floyd-like aura. Flutes and percussion, along with Phillippe's voice, are the chief modifications to the original recording, and the ethereal bamboo flute passages from Schawkie Roth that float across the stilled waters of "Blues by the Ganges" can quiet the soul. Halpern, a one-man New Age music factory, sometimes presents his faithful with some thinly developed musical notions. Not this time. While not a classic, this remake offers an attractive option to those who prefer hints of rhythm in their meditation music. --Terry Wood

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Warren Haynes other band.......2007-07-04

This is an excellent introduction to Govt Mule, if you have not heard of them before, and are looking for some quality guitar rock music. Warren Haynes leads this band, as well as stepping in for Dickie Betts in the Allman Brothers. This is not music in the same southern rock genre as the Allman Brothers, it is blues based rock.

Warren is stellar on slide guitar, the guitar work is framed within excellent song craftsmanship as well. Some of the songs run long, but this is not a jam band.

Highlights:
About to Rage is a slowburner, Slackjaw Jezebel uptempo funk rocker, as is Lola leave your light on.

5 out of 5 stars This just gets better and better..........2007-01-27

Man, the more I listen to it, the more I like it! These guys can definitely rock, and their ballads are not just filler (check out "Wine and Blood" and it's sweet, cryin' guitar hooks and clever opening line..."Desiree's in disarray...") They tell stories.

This is blues-based rock with intelligent and original lyrics and unexpected and sophisticated chord changes ("Little Toy Brain.".)

Even...dare I say..a "Zepelin-esque" riff or two. Modern, yet with a big nod to late 60's/early 70's stuff; if a woman were to sing in this band, you could easily picture Janis Joplin or Dale Kranz (of Rossington Collins...damn, she rocked!) belting these out. Guitarist Warren Haynes, I believe, is the singer. And let me just say, he's no slouch in the vocal department. In fact, he's spot-on.

I've seen this tagged as "party rock" and "swamp rock." Huh? Nope. Just damn good music. You'll probably find yourself listening to this alot.

2 out of 5 stars Guess I'm just not a fan.......2006-08-15

I heard great things about them but I guess I wasn't really familiar with their work - either that or this particular album just isn't for me. Then again I'm not a blues fan so maybe that's the problem. The first tune is catchy but the rest is not funked up enough for my taste.

5 out of 5 stars Great Southern Jams.......2006-03-08

This is a 5 star effort all the way! What a great and fun band these Gov't Mule guys have turned out to be. Along with the always awesome rhythm section and perfect guitar we also get some great keyboards courtesy of Danny Louis.

These guys consistently create fantastic music.

4 out of 5 stars hot hot hot.......2005-10-19

Warren Haynes and Matt Abts return with new players Danny Lewis and Andy Hess on keyboard and bass respectively for a rebirth of one of the most intense bands working. While I prefered the stylistic breadth of the Deep End projects, this is in my opinion the best Mule CD as a self contained unit. While the instinctive communication between Haynes and the late Alan Woody is missing, overall the band burns with a purpose.

Standouts include Bad Man Walking, Slackjaw Jezebel, Wine and Blood, Lola Leave Your Light On, Little Toy Brain, and New World Blues

    5 out of 5 stars Definitely a classic.............2006-06-10

I used to live in San Anselmo (Sleepy Hollow), California, near Steve Halpern. Little did I realize all those years, just how talented Steve is. I bought Deja-Blues after my divorce (and after moving from San Anselmo), and to this day I find it one of a literal handful of CDs that I consider the "best" music that I have.

Karma (did I spell this correctly?) isn't something I often think about, but I am blessed to have found Deja-Blues, no matter the connection.

Beyond these words, I can't equal the excellent reviews that were written before this, regarding this CD. It's beyond any doubt, a "must have"...

5 out of 5 stars Best Yoga and Massage music I've heard........2003-11-21

This was played a couple of times in a class and I fell in good love with it. I love the flute and the eastern tone of drums that revolves throughout the whole CD. Not only that, but the consistency of the song that varies from one track to another keeps the listener at pace. I'm not a fan of CD's where someone vocals and sings a song with words, even if it is nice, peaceful and cool. This is all instrumental, with NO words, perhaps only the "humming", but even then it goes great with it. Perfect music to help you relax or when reading.

    5 out of 5 stars Hauntingly Beautiful!.......2000-12-02

This CD has an India influence. It is so exotic. I love "Atlantis Rising."

This evoked visions of ancient mysteries with mystical rhythms. Just when I thought I had heard the best of Steven Halpern.

The bamboo flute is what I love most about this etherial sound. Exotic percussion includes: dumbek, zarb, and udu. Steven performs on synthesizers, electric bass and electric guitar.

5 out of 5 stars Really excellent ensemble music.......2000-10-31

Often Steve Halpern creates lovely solo music for relaxation and healing. Seeveral of his more recent releases included collaborations with individual musicians, and were equally successful, healing sounds. This CD includes an ensemble of incredible musical talent to complement that of Mr. Halpern. The musicians include: Schwake Roth, bamboo flute; Melissa Phillipe vocals; Mark Bell, dumbek and zarb (drums); Marc Van Wageningen, electric bass; Ian Dongle, udu and shaker; Victor Spiegal, dumbek and cymbals; Paul Horn, solo flute; and Richard Horowitz, ney. Right off the bat you get the idea that the music is very full and rich with extra percussion and interesting additions on woodwinds and vocals. The sum is definitely greater than the individual players on this CD. The added musical contributions bring a satisfying quality to the overall fullness of the pieces which really enhances the mood and the music. I enjoy Halpern's other music, especially as a one-on-one experience. This CD goes beyond that introspective, singular feeling, creating music that begs to be experienced by everyone--all at once. I hope that this is trend for some of Halpern's future releases! This is one of the best ever CDs from Inner Peace Music.

5 out of 5 stars New Age electronica skillfully weaves Eastern moods.......2000-10-08

I've sampled about 75% of the tracks on this CD at a listening station at Tower Records. This album reminds me of Sacred Spirits by Yeha-Noha, which took authentic and plaintive American Indian vocals and set them to a mellow ebb and flow of new age electronic strings and synths atop soothing percussion. On Deja-Blues the theme is Egyptian (?). I don't know exactly how to describe it. Like the CD says, it makes you think of pyramids and deserts, but perhaps at night or deep inside the pyramid, not out in the scorching sunlight. The electronica elements are more varied and textured than Sacred Spirits, yet without being obtrusive or distracting from the hypnotic quality of the tunes. This is intelligent music which fans of strict electronica may think too new-agey. It's definitey not music for dancing. It's for dreaming.

4 out of 5 stars For all the turmoil surrounding this duo; they certainly didn't let it affect their music.......2007-03-17

Deja is the duo of Starleana Young and Curt Jones, both formerly of the famed funk group Slave. After feeling trapped by the pressures of being in a large group, they formed the duo Aurra (which is basically the same unit as Deja, but under some questionable circumstances they were forced to change their name). This album spawned the R&B hit "You And Me Tonight", which is actually not the duo's crowning achievement (too many spoken parts). Songs like "What To Do Now" and "Some Things Turn Around" are much better.

              3 out of 5 stars Classic 80's Cd Soul.......2006-09-10

This cd was pretty good, but mainly know for 2 singles, You and Me Tonight and That's where You'll find Me. Both of which receive heavy radio rotation. Both of which had a video that aired on BET regularly.

This group remind me of the classic soul of Rene and Angela. An impressive piece of work that is worth owning. With classic soul jams that should stand the test of time for those of us whom heard the songs before.

Luckily, I have a cd, but for those of you whom are looking for it, buy it when you can because as far as I can see, It is hard to find. I been looking for a friend of mine so I know this to be true.

I gave it 3 stars because it wasn't the greatest cd, but it was pretty nice. Worth owning without a doubt.
