Worst of the three.......2006-06-01

There are a total of three Wayne Gorbea CDs available on Amazon.com. This is the worst. None of the tunes on this CD got me excited. On the other hand, I can dance to it.

The other two CDs are great. They make me sing as well as dance. My neighbors don't like it.

8 Quality Tracks.......2003-08-26

The best yet from Wayne Gorbea. Typical Gorbea style - 8 tracks of no nonsense Salsa Dura, averaging over 6 and a half minutes a piece. No duds on this one! Great mix of trombones, percussion and piano. Frankie Otero handles the vocals nicely, backed by some catchy coros.

Only complaint, if you could call it a complaint, is the lack of a real stand-out track for the club. "Estamos en Salsa" almost has enough extra punch to outshine the rest, but not quite!

Something missing in this one............2003-04-08

Im disappointed with this recording. Maybe because I was spoiled by Salsa Picante and expected some of the same up beat old school stuff. I still can't find one track that shines above the other.

This fabulous New York Band didn't disappoint me and has some great salsa tracks for every type of salsa lover -- slow, fast or classic salsa dura! There's 6 salsa songs out of 8 tracks in total. And what are my personal favourites, well, it starts with a wickedly fast salsa on Track 1 - Sube Esa Cuesta, which just grabs you and makes you want to dance. What's interesting to note, is that many experienced dancers don't enjoy that speed anymore as you can't express yourself, it's just move after move at hyper-speed. So once you listen to the rest of the album, it's a great opener, but not the song you'd want to listen to over and over. Then Track 2 is a "classic remake" of Clavo y Martillo, so New York in flavour and caught my attention. Track 3, No Hay Confucion, didn't grab me at first until I heard it again in the comfort of my own home, perfect for beg-int dancers to mambo (salsa on 2) -- I couldn't even find the 1 because it's so slow and perfect for the 2. Track 4, Fiesta En El Bronx, is a beautiful song -- a perfect on 2 song with the right mix of coro and classic mambo. Track 5 and 7 are also NY mambos and Tracks 6 and 8 could be danced to a cha cha. After listening to this album all night, I'm totally drawn back into Clavo Y Martillo and Fiesta en el Bronx.

I play this CD non-stop. One of my favorite salsa CDs. I never tire of listening to it. If you like Sonora Carruseles and Jose Alberto (as do I), chances are you'll like this....

A trip back to the Salsa 70's.......2006-07-02

It's generally agreed that "Salsa" today rarely measures up to that from the great pre-80's era. Although this CD isn't quite in the same league as the Fania All-Stars, Eddie Palmieri, Ray Barreto, Willie Colon et al, it does capture much of the feel of the NY Latin sound of the 60's and 70's. (Later Edit: After living with this CD for awhile, I've changed my mind and upgraded it to being well within this league.)

The arrangements, in particular, are excellent. They contain many quotes from vintage pieces, such as Puente's Ran Kan Kan in the first track. They reflect a command of the Salsa musical dialect, including the use of rhythm changes to keep the interest flowing as well as the insertion of Latin percussion solos where the music "demands" it. (Strangely, the liner notes indicate that these solos were overdubbed (?!))

In certain respects, I prefer it to Jimmy Bosch's most recent CD (El Avión de la Salsa) because it's less refined and has more of an extemporaneous feel to it in contrast to the more tightly arranged Bosch output.

This is my first Gorbea CD. I will likely now gobble up the rest of his output as I have with Jimmy Bosch.

modernized mambo style salsa with good flavor.......2005-06-22

El disco esta bueno, pero yo pienso que muchos de los reviewers de amazon estan exagerando cuan buena es esta banda.
El estilo de salsa que toca Salsa Picante es muy feliz y las canciones son bastante largas con buenas partes para los differentes instrumentos. Esto le da al disco una increible disposicion para el baile.
Los metales tocan melodias en un estilo que recuerda a maestros del pasado como Tito Puente, y al fin al cabo terminan sonando como si los metieron en una maquina del tiempo en 1970 y salieron en el an~o 2000.
Otra cosa que me gusto es que en estos dias de tantos grupos copiando exitos del pasado(spanish harlem orquestra, sonora carruseles, y miami's band), las canciones en este disco son originales.

High Level of Musical Sophistication.......2004-05-15

If you love salsa rythm with more musical sophistication and jazz orientation that the average salsa you hear in clubs, this CD is for you. Frankly I can't believe my ears. They sound like they're Cuban, which is the highest compliment I can give.

This CD is a must, a collectors jewel. For begining, intermidate or advanced dancers, dancers on the one tempo or the two tempo you will love this CD.
And if you are simply searching or looking for your first Salsa CD I certainly recommend Wayne Gorbea's Salsa Picante for a starter.

This is what can happen when a great musician gets bland. No real excitement in this one and he made a few greats in his time. The best ones are not around on cd, from this source anyway. He made a great recording with the vocal group 2+2.That cd with Pancho Sanchez had real excitement. This one is best passed up, unless you need this to complete the collection.

this cd came into my hands by random. it is excellent. real son y montuno give the base to some excellent salsa tracks. highly danceable, more along the lines of cuban salsa rather than the more pop-oriented salsa of recent years.

Quick, Quick, Slow.......2003-07-03

This is a prime example of modern salsa gorda. Upon listening to this cd you hear modern salsa with undertones of pure old-school 'afinque', influences from Willie Rosario, Bobby Valentin,'El Conde' Rodriguez, and other Fania All-Stars. In addition, this is also a taste of what salsa sounds like from Central Texas. "Una provadita de tu panita Louis Shati!"
