Very Good.......2007-02-20

I like Placido Domingo very much, and the songs of Agustin Lara sung by Mr. Domingo are great, as also the other songs by M. Teresa Lara, Jorge Casas and Julio Hernandez. I really like this album and have it in my car to listen to it over and over again while driving long distances. I think this was a good purchase and highly recommend it.

Wonderful and Expressive.......2007-02-17

Agustin Lara made bright and new, without overdone orchestration. Many songs are from the Suite Espanola, and all are beloved by lovers of the Lara bolero, an emotional journey not to be missed. A new sound for a few, that were known in Mexico as performed by Alejandro Algara, a less known lyric tenor. Very bright, and with less slips in the mix than the A. Lara, Suite Espanola CD by Mr. Domingo, titled Bajo El Cielo Espanol, also a great offering by this dramatic performer. This is really another Domingo that is needed by any fan...Singing his own love of Spanish songs in songs by one of the great historical song writers....A Winner, in my opinion!

A wonderful CD, a hidden treasure, by an artist who has suffered for being born in the Age of Pavarotti. Nobody does this kind of music better than Domingo - you will be transported.

Maria Bonita - Muchisima buena.......2001-11-19

The songs on this are the best of Mexican popular music from the forties and some more traditionals such as Cucurucucu and Malaguena. The arrangements are excellent with many updated.

Mijares voice, although I don't know much about music, is most certainly a tenor. In the traditional songs he is able to hold the notes so long as is traditional in songs such as Malaquena. Captures the passion of musical ballads, you will feel it.

A must have especially for those get togethers where you want people to dance. Great dancing music!!!!!

And you won't be able to resist singing along. For those who just love Spanish language, Mijares' voice is understandable to extend the depth of language. I have had the album for years and play it often.

Beautiful music, terrific voice.......2001-07-19

I grew up with a lot of the songs on this cd, and I have heard them performed by many artists through the years. I have NEVER heard a better or more powerful rendition of this wonderful music. This is by far the most exceptional album by Mijares, one that does justice to his incredible voice, and one where he does justice to some of the timeless songs of this century. I searched everywhere for this cd, including overseas, and I finally own a treasured copy. It is a privilege to listen to it, and the romanticism is heart-warming. Absolutely wonderful.

Clasicos de las Americas has Good Gottschalk.......2004-02-23

This six CD set has the Central and South American greats, but I prefer the North American who did some of his best composition South of the border. Louis-Moreau Gottschalk had the life of a modern day Rock Star. He is joined in this set by such prominent players as Heitor Villa-Lobos, George Gershwin, Augustin Barrios, and Carlos Guastavino. George Rabol is a favorite pianist.

Alejandro Algara, Brindis al maestro.......2007-05-27

This is one of my favorite recordings, and I give it five-stars for several reasons. I particularly appreciate recordings by musicians who are intimately familiar with their repertoire. One must remember that these pieces are primarily boleros composed by the greatest bohemio of all time. So the "power" that modern vocalists bring to their renditions was probably not as important to Lara as it is to modern interpreters. In any case, the choice between vocalists of the caliber of Placido Domingo and Alejandro Algara comes down to taste. Both have the control, phrasing, diction, voice and talent (genius?) to do justice to the music. Of the two, I prefer Algara's interpretation of these pieces (a preference that does not necessarily apply to other recordings) because he interprets them like the love songs that they are. One must take the bitter with the sweet; these recordings were made in the 60's. That means that the technology is up not to current standards. By the same token, the recordings are not as cluttered with modern recording studio enhancements and filtering.

A good example of the early years of Agustin Lara.......2007-02-17

This one is hard to review, as it has some problems in the mix, I suspect in the actual soloist presentation with the orchestra being recorded first, but thats only a guess; I am no engineer. Even so, it gets 4 stars with me, as the beauty of Algara's voice holds up well, and the songs are important, like the very early Maria Bonita, and Imposible, as well as others. This album was done as a tribute, (of course, from the title..), to Lara, and it holds up well in that context, hence the honest 4 stars, instead of 3, but remember Algara is a lyric tenor, and doesn't sing with the power we have become used to with Domingo and Pavarotti. Still a nice offering, and probably worth the price if you like the traditional songs of Mexico, but Algara's two earlier recordings are better.
