This 25-song soundtrack to Julian Temple's biopic of the late Joe Strummer is not as much a retrospective of the punk-rock kingpin as an 80-minute radio show with the ex-Clash leader spinning the dials on influential favorites, such as Tim Hardin's "Black Sheep Boy," Eddie Cochran's 1958 rocker "Nervous Breakdown," and Nina Simone's 1967 version of the Bee Gees' "To Love Somebody." Snippets of interviews and Strummer testimonials break up dead air between tracks, which include previously unreleased demos of Clash nuggets like "White Riot" and "I'm So Bored with the USA," as well as Strummer's toned-down solo work with the Mescaleros. But the real treasures lie in the rarely-heard-before: The Clash performing Strummer's "(In The) Pouring Rain" live in 1984, which never made an album; 1988's "Trash City" recorded with Strummer's Los Angeles combo the Latino Rockabilly War; and the 1975 UK-only single "Keys to Your Heart" from his pre-Clash band the 101ers. The latter's ska-and-punk tendencies, obvious influences on English bands like the Pretenders and the Beat, indicate an early direction for the Clash and the sway its leader would hold over the future of music. --Scott Holter

Album Description

5 out of 5 stars STRUMMER UND DRANG.......2007-07-27

When the ancient Greeks were creating their myths, Gods and heroes, they had men like Joe Strummer in mind. Epic entities possessed of such intense power and influence that their cult alone could sway the course of mortal men. Dionysus thought flutes could cease all worry. Strummer's guitar thought you weren't worried enough. The most appealing thing to me about Greek mythology is that their Gods were flawed and their heroes doomed. Give me a God with a God-complex and I'm a believer. A tale of an effed-up fallen hero? We will tell that story till the end of days.

I'm glad Joe didn't go out like Sid or Kurt, but his passing was reported with a barely audible whimper. He deserved better. How many statues of Apollo are there? Joe never caused a plague. His aim was true. Release the doves!

There's a rumor going 'round that ..Julien Temple has made a documentary about Strummer called "The Future Is Unwritten". For reasons that defy understanding, it isn't being screened in the U.S. until November (maybe). Meanwhile, it's been playing in Europe for months. Just to rub a cake of salt into the wound of the frothy mouthed faithful, the soundtrack to said film HAS been made available in the states of disgrace.

Well...that'll do. It's easily the most riveting bunch 'o' songs I've heard all year. Back in the early eighties Strummer orchestrated a pirate-radio broadcast from a London rooftop, RADIO CLASH. It was probably pretty great but I wouldn't know because I never heard it. Nor did I have the opportunity to listen to his BBC shows from 1999-2002. What "The Future Is Unwritten" soundtrack offers is a chance to experience a bit of what those shows were like. You can play the U.K. version of The Clash debut until the needle turns to dust (and you should), but you won't get closer to the soul of the man than you will here. If you follow the arc of Joe's music...from the 101ers to The Clash to Latino Rockabilly War and the Mescaleros through to his last solo work on Hellcat...you see a man searching for a sound. A fearless sonic explorer. A man with an exotic aural appetite. Joe was an exemplary musicologist. He would have exhausted Harry Smith.

What if...you could sit in a room with Joe Strummer and have him play you some of his favorite records? How much would that be worth? Julien Temple, Ian Neil, & Alan Moloney have scoured those old broadcasts and assembled a jaw-dropping example. Running the gamut from Elvis Presley's "Crawfish" (from what is, for my money, the finest soundtrack ever...King Creole) to the live MC5 version of "Kick Out The Jams" to Eddie Cochran & Woody Guthrie...from Bob Dylan to Nina Simone. If you've never heard Tim Hardin or Ernest Ranglin before, you will certainly be seeking them out upon hearing this.

Lest you think Andres Landeros' jaunty "Martha Cecilia" might taint your Mohawk, there's a healthy dose of the Strummer music arc I spoke of. A blistering (how else to describe The Clash?) demo take of "White Riot"...a Manna-from-heaven never before released Clash song "(In The) Pouring Rain"from a 1984 Seattle show...The 101ers classic "Keys To Your Heart"...Joe's indescribably beautiful instrumental "Omotepe"...and not only that, kids...but interspersed between all this are little sound-bites and introductions from the Punk Rock Warlord himself!

Whereas the Strummer/Cash duet on Marley's "Redemption Song" had reduced me to tears (3 ghostly heroes on THAT song? I defy you not to cry) a few years ago, this album is filled to the brim with life-affirming discovery and awe-inspiring passion...and F&*# YOU if that's not punk rock. The hell it ain't!

5 out of 5 stars A well done tribute.......2007-06-21

I think this is a great album! It is, of course, a soundtrack strictly speaking but it sounds more like a mix CD from a very cool friend with broad musical tastes. Yet it does all tie together because of who it's about. There are few compillations that cover so much territory and yet flow so evenly. I can't wait to see the film!

4 out of 5 stars Insightful and entertaining eollection.......2007-05-30

It's hard living off the scraps that may come our way now that the great man has gone and I'm sure there will be some pretty crass compilations in days to come! This however is skillfully put together and paints a picture of the man through the music he wrote and the music he loved. The opening studio take of just his voice singing White Riot sends a chill and as the full song commences memories flood back of sweaty Top Ranks and the band blasting away within touching distance of the audience.Following thisThere is a very unusual rendition of Rock the Casbah in Arabic however the most part is taken up by Joe playing songs from his radio show all of which are special. My particular favorite is the U Roy song. Many of you will have bought the 'Front Line' album back in 76 as it was sold at a promotional price of 69p the track that appears here is a version of the original and to my money superior, what a voice!!
I enjoy this album because it flows and it something to keep as an aid to remembering Joe Strummer, the songs are linked by passages of dialogue, a sprightly sounding Topper Headon is just great to hear at last, but most moving is Joe's passage about the ability and power of people to change things. His voice seems to crack with the emotion and intensity of what he is saying and I'm afraid to say I cried again!!

The self-titled debut album from Texas trio Los Lonely Boys tries--and mostly succeeds--in being everything to everyone. Garza brothers Henry, Jojo, and Ringo try their hand at classic-rock grooves, Tex-Mex, bilingual pop, and traditional harmonies with deliciously ear-pleasing results. The album is perfectly suited to Top 40, Spanish and adult-contemporary radio--all at the same time. At times tracks such as "Onda" and "Dime Mi Amor" recall 1970s-era Santana, but the Boys are at their best on "Heaven," the feel-good first single, and "La Contestacion," a yearning ballad matched by pleading instrumentation. As a bonus, this Special Edition includes Spanish versions of "Heaven" and "More Than Love," but the real highlight is a Southern-fried take on Johnny Cash's "I Walk the Line." That the boys manage to make the classic song their own is no small feat. There's also a DVD featuring thoughtful live performances and music videos that offer a glimpse of the Boys in action. --Joey Guerra

I heard one of the songs by chance and decided to buy the CD. I really enjoy all of it.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2005-07-29

Very intertaining. I bought it for the Heaven track, but enjoyed the whole thing.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2005-05-21

This CD was the surprise of the last decade. I caught only a few bars of "I Walk the Line," on a television commercial. I thought it was a fresh sound so I bought the CD. Wow! No, I mean wow-wow-wow. This band is tight like only brothers could be. There is no awkward phrasing or uncomfortable moments that are always apparent between rock stars. They are in and out of each other's personal space without so much as a deep breath. They are natural together. Their harmony is three voices from one, and one voice from three. Each brother is an outstanding musician in his own right.
The Garza brothers call it "Texican Rock n Roll." Thanks for that. I would be hard pressed to name their style. I hear Eagles, Santana, Ottmar Leibert, Stevie Ray. They are Country, R &B, Jazz, Blues, Ranchero, Romantica and more. Every time I listen I hear something new. JoJo's bass sounds like lead, Ringo's drums while not loud or overbearing are complex and sound big and full.. Henry, well Henry. Here is where I venture to say that at 25 years old, If not now, Henry Garza is well on his way to being the best guitarist around. He doesn't play guitar, he dances with it, and oh what a dancer.
Someone mentioned that "Hollywood" is addicting. I found every single song addicting, but I still hold out my favorite as "Crazy Dream" because of the jazz changeup. It's sooo awesome. LLB is coming to Spokane and I can't wait. Until then I'll continue playing this CD over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece. .......2005-04-12

Los Lonely Boys provide a glimmer of hope with their debut album, a glimmer of hope that modern music is not all that bad and even today great bands can still appear and knock your senses of course to somewhere else where everything is dominated by pure emotion. "Los Lonely Boys" is a masterful mix of flavors and notes, it is both a throwback to the 70's grooves bands like Santana perfected and a jolt into the future for what can be called Chicano rock. The album is filled with delicious winks at Richie Valens, Johnny Cash, Santana and many, many others. One of the pleasing things you realize while listening to this album is that this is a band that knows and has studied the classics, bands like Los Lonely Boys and Jet have recently come under fire because they sound a lot like their legendary heroes, I still do understand what the problem is. People complain that a lot of new rock sounds too simple, distorted and dumb, and then they complain that other new bands soo what? Too good? "Los Lonely Boys" is a beautiful album filled with wonderous melodies, consider "Heaven," a wonderful song of hope and redemption with indeed heavenly guitar licks, a dreamy atmosphere and uplifting spirit. "Crazy Dreams" is pure classic rock with an almost blues edge running through while "Señorita" has that wicked, feverish vibe Santana created in songs like "Black Magic Woman" where the main character just had to fall in love with some witchy babe who sounds like she walked out of hell. "Hollywood" is cool and breezy while "More Than Love" doesn't even belong in this era, this is a stylish, excellent ballad that would do Richie Valens justice. It is no wonder that Los Lonely Boys have been opening for Carlos Santana, I have already mentioned the name a few times, in the album the influence is most present in "Onda," a scorching jammer that exhilarates and leaves you admiring just how well the Garza brothers can play. For those who do not already own the album this new Special Edition is THE ONE to get. The extra material is not added in vain. The Garza brothers come from Texas and so it is no surprise that they tip their hats to the great Johnny Cash with a roaring cover of "I Walk The Line" where the guitar and vocals fly in exhilarating blues/country ecstacy and the Spanish version of "Heaven" is just as moving as the original. The extra DVD has the band's music videos and some interesting acoustic renditions where the band members share fascinating stories about the birth of each tune. "Los Lonely Boys" is a powerhouse debut, a masterpiece of raw rock n' roll and feeling. If like MUSIC, go check it out.

5 out of 5 stars The Texican Treo.......2005-03-18

If you are into truely incredible guitar riff's with a danceable Latin undertone, look no further. The musical stylings of Los Lonely Boys have all the things I like about Stevie Ray, Jonny Lang and Kenny Wayne, while keeping an upbeat rhythum. For a real treat, put on a good set of headphones and press play. You'll be amazed by the quality of the recording (You can actually hear the amp crackle in the beginning of "Onda"). Before you know it, you'll be jumping off the couch with your lighter in hand setting the ceiling fan on fire until you realize you're not at a concert. OK, maybe that was just me, but... Top it off with the videos and even an acoustic set that I've never heard anywhere else and you truely have a bargain! I dare you to try not to sing along or tap your toes through this album! Oh, word to the wise...don't put the DVD on at your next party unless you want all your friends parking on your couch, staring in rapt facination.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful introduction to Mexican traditional music.......2007-04-09

Everyone knows Los Lobos know how to rock, but this album shows their outstanding musicianship in the totally different context of traditional Mexican music. Using only acoustic instruments, they have produced an eminently listenable, smoothly produced and accessible entry point for the everyday listener to get into this rich musical tradition. Whether you are a serious or casual listener, or just want terrific background music for a dinner party, you can't go wrong with this album.

5 out of 5 stars one of five recordings i would take to a desert isle.......2006-04-09

The first time i heard los lobos was "will the wolf survive" and i thought it was ok, but later i heard "la pistola y el corazon" and thought, "my damn, that is a fine album!" Los Lobos is the tightest band (like they've been together since birth) i've ever heard and this album exhibits their superb musicianship. There is absolutely no filler on this album, every song is beautiful and complements the other songs very well. It is a wonderful blend of up and slow tempo tunes and, personally, the best comes last. The track "la pistola y el corazon," tugs at my emotions everytime i hear it, and even though i don't have command of spanish, the vocals and instrumentation are so expressive that i can easily feel the despair of the singer. The band also did a great job of getting the listener involved in the music by creating an impromptu party experience in some of the songs like when one of the band members shouts "hoi!" in "el canaler" to keep the pace hot. One of the best albums you will ever hear!

4 out of 5 stars Lovely.......2003-07-04

In all honesty (and with much regret), it seems that traditional Mexican music is dying out--it is with this in mind that I speak on behalf of this wonderful collection of traditional Mexican music. Los Lobos have certainly outdone themselves with La Pistola y El Corazon, which is an excellent introduction to the traditional sounds of Mexico. Quite a variety of styles are represented on this album, such as the lively "son jarocho" as well as the melancholic "huapango" and the beautifully melodic "vals," all of which are native to Mexico. The Spanish guitar seems to be the main instrument present in the majority of the songs, which is a lovely departure from the popular accordion-dominated "nortena" and "ranchera por accordeon" (little more than nortena with a slight folk influence), both of which are strongly associated with Mexico; interestingly enough, these are relatively new additions to the vast variety of music native to Mexico. The band's version of "Si Yo Quisiera" fits this fold quite nicely and will sound very familiar to perhaps the majority of listeners; I, on the other hand, am not a fan of polka, particularly Mexican polka, marking this song as my least favorite. Even then, there is still much beauty to be found on this release, particularly with the huapango "Amarillas," a very haunting number. The lively and joyful-sounding "Guacamaya" makes the perfect intro, as it invites the listener in to a world of beautiful music. "(Sonajas) Mananitas Michoacanas" bears a striking resembling to Cajun fiddling, and it is genuinely pleasing to listen to. Other than the songs "Si Yo Quisiera" and "Estoy Sentado Aqui" (not a particularly great track, really), every one of these compositions is a masterpiece. The Spanish-influenced guitar solos are also an asset to the album, proving that the members of Los Lobos are extremely talented musicians. To all who read this: this is true Mexican music. Please add this to your collection; you will not regret it.

There's no doubt that singer Lila Downs' profile is on the rise after her appearance in the film Frida and on the accompanying soundtrack, which led to a performance at the 2003 Academy Awards. The dividing lines between cultures and classes are major themes throughout the Mexican-American singer's decade-long career; but whereas 2001's Border is more angry about the disparities, One Blood: Una Sangre is more inclusive, if only for the hopeful note of unity sounded in the English-language version of the title cut (the album has two distinctly different readings of the song sung, respectively, in English and Spanish). While much of the cumbia-based, genre-breaking material here is original, Downs and her band completely revamp two covers: Ritchie Valens classic "La Bamba" features techno beats and African drumming; the folk song "La Cucaracha" opens with wailing guitar before settling into a gentle reggae groove. Stylistically restless and lyrically didactic, One Blood: Una Sangre is as ambitious as it is beautiful. --Tad Hendrickson

5 out of 5 stars Endless talent, humor(!), peerless voice.......2006-02-04

It does not happen very often that one can hear a forty year old classic in a new cover version, and it is as if you hear that song all new and all over again. Especially, I had always thought that Chavela Vargas' version of Paloma Negra would remain the "gold standard", but when I listened to Lila Down's version here, ohh boy was I wrong, and ohh boy was I blown away! She plays with her talent, she jiggles with her incredible musical possibilities. Where other artists put a lot of effort into a single interpretation, where you see they work hard, Lila Downs seems just like a child that opens a big box of candies and asks: "What type of magic do I feel like doing next?"

All the other songs range from the great (Cjelo Rojo, Tirineni Tsitsiki) to the curious (Mother Jones) and to the original (covers of La Cucaracha and La Bamba), but Lila's Paloma Negra shines as the jewel and showpiece of this CD. If Chavela Vargas' version was the "classic", now it seems more like the pedestrian version to me. And don't get me wrong: I still think it was in itself an incredible performance. But if you want the overdrive, listen to the Lila Downs. Her's is so full of vioce and class, it will blow your mind away! Only in a song like this can it show, where the true genius of an artist really lies.

Let's hope there will be many more showpieces for Lila's endless talent and peerless voice to come!

5 out of 5 stars A Superb Sound, Filled With Passion And Soul!.......2005-07-05

I first heard Lila Downs' sultry, smokey voice in the film "Frida." The movie's entire soundtrack is extraordinary, and I still listen to the CD frequently. Fortunately Ms. Downs has come out with four albums since then, because I love the passion and soul she puts into her music. "Una Sangre" is her latest offering. And it is an eclectic, outstanding mix, based on her multicultural artistic vision!

Lila Downs is a Mexican-American vocalist, with a Scottish-American father, and a Mixteca mother. She grew up in both the Mexican state of Oaxaca and in Minnesota, USA, bi-lingual and bi-cultural. Lila received formal voice training in Mexico and in the States, and performs her own compositions, as well as tapping into the rich indigenous music from the Mixtec, Zapotec, Maya, and Nahautl cultures. Her variegated sound is a real fusion of Mexican folk songs, rich American blues and jazz, along with some pop, mixed in with Afro-Cuban and Brazilian rhythms. I occasionally hear some gospel in there also. It is really difficult to pigeonhole her music and interpretations into a genre. This is a good thing! She is totally original.

"Viborita (Little Snake)," leads off with a fantastic driving Afro-Latino beat sustained by a fleet bass drum, with call-and-response vocals. It is very reminiscent of coastal music from Mexico, Central and South America, as well as the Caribbean - similar influences, right? The poignant "Dignificada," comes right afterward, and really gives the artist an opportunity to show-off her versatility with this slow sensual bolero. "Cielo Rojo," (Red Sky), is an excellent cut, one of my favorites - a sort of Mexican flamenco with 3 very different guitars at work here. It's gypsy-like, with soaring vocals and Lila, at times, trilling a falsetto high in the back of her throat.

"Bamba" is her take on the 200+ year-old song that Ritchie Valens made famous outside of Mexico, and her version of "La Cucaracha" is a fabulous 'cumbia', which some folks mistakenly call reggae. Reggae, which I really like, is totally different. The cumbia is a Colombian folk dance and music, which originated among African slave populations on the country's Atlantic coast. It is popular in areas of Mexico and Latin America. Extremely sensual, the music is often classified as "salsa, played in 4/4 time with a heavy beat one and accentuated beats three and four, giving a loping rolling rhythm similar to 'riding a horse.'" Anyway, this version of "Cucaracha," which usually has political lyrics, is certainly the most unusual I have heard.

"Tiringue Tsitsiki" (Flower of Marigold), is beautiful and sweet. Lila harmonizes with herself with minimal accompaniment here. While Malinche, with Downs' deep-toned voice and powerful delivery is bold, with lots of percussion - snare drums, maracas, and harp. "Paloma Negra" is traditional Mexican, with a fresh touch. "Mother Jones," performed in English, is pure blues. "One Blood," and "Brown Paper People" are also sung in English.

Lila's husband, Paul Cohen, is the musical director and saxophonist. He has brought together an excellent, international group of instrumentalists who come from the US, Mexico (string-multi-instrumentalist, Celso Duarte), Cuba (bassist, Junior Terry Cabrera), Chile (drummer/percussionist, Yayo), and Brazil (guitarist, Guilherme Monteiro). Mexican and American guitarists Ernesto Anaya and Marvin Sewell, make guest appearances, as does the renowned Japanese percussionist Satoshi Takeishi.

This is a wonderful CD! Lila Downs is a unique artist - simply superb! Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Another great offering.......2005-06-16

On this Lila Downs fourth or fifth CD if you count the rerelease (with additional tracks)of "Sandunga" finds her even deeper and more comfortable in her binational soul. Revealing her bicultural identity by the light of the moon , much like a leopard in a starless night jungle, her vocals pounce on your soul, invading and capturing your innermost feelings. There is a certain maturity to her latest work that reveals an accomplished artist, one who has travelled the globe and still comes back to her roots. There are no less than five traditional songs that have been given the Lila Downs treatment to retain their folkloric roots but with an edge, the Lila Downs edge. Even the songs that are originals have that feeling of traditional folkloric music because of fine production and musicianship. Although Lila is the star, credit must be given to the tight band that hails from different lands and whose flags make them like a U.N. delegation. Of course, it goes without mentioning that Lila's "amorcito" Paul Cohen does a wonderful job arranging and producing the various melodies for a tight cohesive sound. If you are new to Lila you may feel the disc lacks continuity but this is who Lila is. She is a multitalented artist whose voice is like a contortionist, bending ,dipping and weaving between genres in her unimitable style. To say she is unique is an understatement. Whether she sings in husky tones, soft whispers, lingering, escalating ,suddenly diving operatic high notes or any style Lila chooses , she is fantastic. Listening to her gives me chills today just like the first time I heard her back in 1999 . The haunting melodies stay with you long after the disc stops playing. I've been listening to this disc for about a year now and never seem to get tired of it. I only put it away , off my multi-disc rotation to give others a chance but I always come back to her. She can sing avariety of styles, many are featured here and they are all really good. Obviously she could do just a jazz album, as is evident on her English version of "One Blood" where she sounds like like a sultry, throaty , Latina, Sade. Her talent is boundless. She has been compared to Chavela Vargas but really there is no comparison, there is Lila and then there is Lila. It is her style, her persona, her music that creates the magic. Some of the more traditional songs that have received the Lila treatment are the mystical "Cielo Rojo," "La Cucaracha," La Bamba," and "Paloma Negra" come to new life like antiques recently brought out of the cabinet to be proudly displayed at the table. Although I like very much the traditonal songs featured on this disc I am also drawn to "Dignificada" which has a slight reggae back beat, "Malinche" which explores the Mexican godmother cursed by some but that belongs to all of us who have Mexican heritage, the bluesy , rootsy sung in English "Mother Jones," the call to musical arms Paul Cohen sax introduction on the Arabic sounding "Brown Paper People" with it's hip-hop inflected vocals adding further worldly textures and both Spanish and English versions of "One Blood/ Una Sangre" solidify the bilingual/binational nature of this disc. Lila is like a fine glass of wine or aged anejo Tequila that resonates with the various nuances and influences of the earth and climate, creating an experience to be savored and to reflect upon. She is not a person who fits into the flavor of the day pop- variety-disposible-icons that flood the music market today. This is a true artist who reflects what many people only feel and cannot express. This is another in a succesive line of great Lila Downs albums to be experienced. As others have stated, check her out live too. I've seen her three times and her shows are incredible. You need this CD in your collection, your soul will never be the same.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely Lila!!!.......2005-01-31

Lila Downs is by far the most amazing vocalist of our time. I have all her CD's and can't wait until the next. Her music and live shows are inspiring and moving. She's a Latina who keeps it real and is proud of who she is, where she comes from and where she's been. I had the honor of meeting her and her inner beauty surely compliments her outer beauty. Her talent is moving, and her humility inspiring. I recommend this CD 100% as well as all her others. Hear it for yourself... and catch her live performances when she's in your town!

4 out of 5 stars From Latin standard to modern vocals.......2004-11-18

UNA SANGRE/ONE BLOOD is perhaps the most startlingly contemporary. 'Viborita' opens with pounding drum beats, choral quality, and a beat that is contemporary in style.
Downs' vocals have moved from Latin standard to modern in UNA SANGRE, without losing any power.

This southwestern super session brings together Cesar Rosas and David Hidalgo of Los Lobos, Chicano country stars Freddy Fender and Rick Treviño, Texas rocker Joe Ely, norteño accordion wizard Flaco Jimenez, and Tejano bandleader Ruben Ramos to pay homage to the Texan-Mexican tradition. The music is acoustic and generally string-driven, with guitars and violins recalling early mariachi and dancing accordion lines. There are some great party tunes, but ballads are the rule, and Treviño and Fender both show superb grace in their vocals. Ely turns in a heartfelt version of Woody Guthrie's "Deportee," but almost all the songs are in Spanish (with translations in the booklet). Each features only one or two of the headlining singers and there is none of the crowded feel of some all-star efforts, just a relaxed and swinging exploration of the classic Tejano sound. --Elijah Wald

4 out of 5 stars tradicion, tradicion.......2007-02-19

Great collection of talent presenting traditional material without irony. Neither artificial emulation of the past, nor snarky remakes, this album is classic music presented by top musicians at the peak of their form. You don't have to be Latino to love it.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful traditional mexican music compilation.......2006-11-05

I know everybody calls this music and the artists who sing it "tex-mex"
or "conjunto music". On other occasions this may be right f.e. The Texas
Tornados, Los Lobos etc. but this wonderful CD - except for 2 songs -
is 100% traditional Mexican music varying from huapango to bolero,
from norteño to jarocho. No one would say after listening to it
that all these 7 musicians, except one, were North American born citizens
although of mexican origin.I would like to render my respects especially to
the late Freddy Fender who passed away only 3 weeks ago.
One day before he died I reviewed his "La música de Baldemar Huerta" CD and
rated it with 5 stars because you can't give 6! Quite a surprise to find out
he also participated with the Super Seven besides his incredible contribution
to the Texas Tornados.
He started out as the Be-Bop Kid, then became a C&W star and
ended up being probably the best and most important contributor to the
Mexican-American music blends.
Besides the mentioned "Baldemar Huerta" CD, this Super Seven gathering
is without any doubt one of the nicest CD's of my 45 years record buying history!

5 out of 5 stars Great music!!!.......2005-04-13

I love this CD. It combines an interesting mix of artists whose music together or individually is great. The ballads are wonderful and the whole cd is wonderful to listen to. I would recommend it highly!

3 out of 5 stars Not my taste.......2005-01-01

I readily accept all the other reviewers' assertions that this album represents outstanding Tejano music--it's just not my taste. I have no previous experience with this musical tradition, and I was hoping for something more along the lines of Eddie Palmieri or Arturo Sandoval. To me, this sounds like the kind of pleasant but bland music one would barely notice in the background at a Mexican restaurant. If you're hoping for something with drive or a bit of an edge, this isn't it.

5 out of 5 stars Total Enjoyment.......2003-08-29

Wanting some Fiesta CD's, this will be selected. It is great music, and example of the power of music to soothe and bind people together in trying situations.

I love this music, and will play it often.

Long before they became American rock legends and Grammy favorites, Los Lobos (or rather Los Lobos del Este de Los Angeles--the Wolves of East Los Angeles--as they were then known) turned a faithful musical tutelage by their parents' Mexican folk music records into a steady stream of gigs at parties, weddings, and what was then a career plateau--a regular engagement at a Mexican restaurant. They also invested in this long out-of-print 1978 independent recording of the best of their all-acoustic traditional Mexican repertoire of that time. Perhaps prophetic of the fusion to come, they named themselves after a popular Tex-Mex group, Los Lobos del Norte, but titled the LP in a good-natured nod to Frank Zappa. Though light years from the experimentation of Kiko and Colossal Head, this collection nonetheless exudes a dedication, soul, and sheer musicality that will be instantly familiar to Lobos admirers. Especially in tackling chestnuts such as "Cielito Lindo" (here quickly segueing from typically sloppy party favorite into a fresh, intricate arrangement in a heartbeat) and "Guantanamera" (in a traditional, rhythmically compelling guajira), the Lobos can't resist some loving musical tweaking. More than just the roots of a modern legend, this is truly music from the heart. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars 10 Years before "La Bamba".......2006-12-30

In 1987 Los Lobos became worldwide known thanks to the title song
of the movie "la Bamba" inspired in the life of the first hispanic
Rock & Roll star Ritchie Valens who had a big hit with it in 1958/59.
It was Ritchie's idea to record a typical Mexican folk song from Veracruz
and launch it on the market against the will of everybody. It would
become one of the most popular songs ever and recorded by hundreds of
different artists in the past fifty years. Los Lobos' version made it to
number 1 for 3 consecutive weeks. Ten years earlier these guys recorded
a number of traditional Mexican songs like La Bamba called "Just another band
from East L.A." whose original tapes have been recuperated in 2000.
What a treasure! Beautiful songs from ranchera to bolero and from
jarocho to a traditional Bolivian and Cuban song. An incredible band
still making great music today as Los Lobos or taking part in projects or groups
like the wonderful Los Super Seven.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible guitar work .......2004-10-22

This album consists of all tradional-style songs, which were recorded before the band's rise to fame. Songs showcase the incredible talent of Los Lobos, making what is kinda cheesy music sound really cool. I also recomend "This Time", a little more garage rock influenced, but also with some folk-songs on it.

5 out of 5 stars Musico Mexicano con SOUL!!.......2003-01-05

Without a doubt this collection of Los Lobos
songs are fabulous. I have given this CD to family and friends
and their reaction was the same as mine.
If you grew up in or near a Mexican neighborhood this
music will touch your soul!!!

5 out of 5 stars In The Beginning There Was This Little Band From East L.A..........2002-07-04

This is a must have for not only Los Lobos fans but those somewhat interested in their music. This album contains truly classic Mexican traditional songs that I used to hear as a child at family gatherings and continue to hear to this day with much pride and honor ! The guitar/acoustical arrangements are truly flawless and crisp. The rhythms are highly infectious and the melodies will stay with the listener long after the fiesta is over or the cd player stops ! Sabor A Mi is a timeless romantic bolero interpreted over the decades by other Latino artists (Trio Los Panchos come to mind). Here The Lobos do the song much justice with their perfect rendition. Guitars never sounded so awesome ! Yes, the Spanish language is beautiful (even if some listeners don't understand it). It's the music and harmonic vocals tht should captivate (and do) regardless of any language...

The Gipsy Kings are never going to have the kind of critical acclaim that Paco de Lucia has, but their popularization of poppy rumba flamenca among non-Spanish speakers is nothing to be ashamed of. Nonetheless, here on Roots, the octet turns back to the tradition while making their own imprint on it. Having the band record in an old farm house, producer Craig Street, it seems, simply told them to sit down to play their bittersweet songs. Without electric instruments or a drum set to clutter the mix, brisk acoustic guitars will sweep listeners up in the driving rhythms as lead guitarist Tonino Baliardo soars overhead, particularly on the instrumental songs. When Nicolas, Canut and Patchai Reyes take turns on lead vocals, Street adeptly captures the timbre and nuance of the singers' voices while also delicately balancing the guitar, hand percussion and bass. No pop songs or bombastic rock beats:here's one that purists cannot argue with. --Tad Hendrickson

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-02-21

This is the best CD that was ever recorded by mankind. I'm throwing my huge collection of music into the garbage and I will only listen to this masterpiece until the day I die.

To be honest with you, I haven't heard this CD. I'm only writing this to pi$$ off Oscar Perez who gave this a 2 star rating.

2 out of 5 stars Not so quite...catchy?.......2006-10-21

Im kinda surprised of the excellent review this CD got. Im my opinion this is not the gipsy kings i know. I found it average at best. I did not find the songs as interesting as many of their other CDs. I can only recommend this to hardcore fans only. For the more timid or newcomer to this music I have to recommend the Gipsy kings CD "ALLEGRIA" which has to be one of the best CDs ever made anywhere. But I have to advise most to stay away from this one...

4 out of 5 stars this is more like it.......2005-10-11

This CD will undoubtedly bring running all the barking dogs that cry out "The Gipsy Kings are not Flamenco!" However, the dogs may find themselves sitting quietly and listening, for while this is not the sort of music which will wring cries of "Puro Gitano!" from serious Flamenco fans, it is nonetheless very good music. It is certainly the best music that the Gipsy Kings have produced in a very long time.
I was intrigued by the concept of the music being recorded in a non-studio setting, without all the trappings of pop music which have become increasingly prevalent in the band's CDs. I was both gratified and disappointed by the finished product. The picture on the cover led me to expect a more organic feel to the recording; alas, the appreciative audience who punctuate live Flamenco with vigorous cries of "Ole!" and stamp, clap, and otherwise become a part of the performance were absent.
But the music is undeniably powerful, well recorded and executed with considerable skill. In particular, tracks # 3 "Fandango (Patchai)," #5 Rhythmic," # 9 Fandango (Nicolas)," # 15 "Hermanos," and # 16 "Petit Noya" were oustanding. The two "Fandango" tracks were stripped of enough polish to allow the emotion of the music to emerge, and the Middle-eastern flavored "Rhythmic" is a delight. This is a very fine recording, and I hope that we will hear more like it.

5 out of 5 stars Gipsy Kings Roots.......2005-09-26

This is their best yet!! I have been a Gipsy Kings fan since I first heard Bamboleo. Their music gets into your soul and makes you feel good. I have recently received their new DVD Gipsy Kings 'Tierra Gitana and Live in Concert' It is really great!!! I had Tierra Gitana on a VHS but it has been played so much that it is hard to see. I write poetry and the Gipsy Kings have inspired me to write more. I hope they keep up the good work. I would love to know where I can send them my poetry they have inspired me to write. Sincerely, Marcia I am an adult 50 yrs. old, not a kid. Couldn't find where to send a regular review.

I have lots of Gipsy Kings CDs, & I consider this the best. Really outstanding music. Classic Gipsy Kings. And, having seem them in concert again this year, makes this CD even more special, as they did the songs from the CD at the concert. A must have for any fan of the Gipsy Kings.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

Formed in 1998 as a loose collective of (mostly) Texas musicians with a love for traditional Mexican melodies, Los Super Seven took exactly one week to produce a self-titled debut that was an offhand marvel of norteño tradition and intimacy. Three years later, four of the original members--including David Hidalgo and Cesar Rosas of Los Lobos--return for Canto, but their musical ambitions have broadened from Tex-Mex house party to pan-Latin musical summit. Boasting guest appearances by Brazilian tropicalismo heavyweight Caetano Veloso, Los Angeles-based Cuban pianist Albert Salas, and Peruvian diva Susana Baca, Canto features some of the old-world romantic charm of Buena Vista Social Club (listen, in particular, to Raul Malo croon the album-opening "Siboney"), but the CD doesn't shy away from the subtler, breathier charms of Veloso or Baca's sophisticated Afro-Latin pop on "Drumi Drumi Mobila." Canto reaches its pinnacle on "Teresa," a Hildalgo-sung gem that mixes the rock experimentalism of Los Lobos with the percussive piano attack of Salas and a complex undertow of polyrhythms. At times like these, Canto sounds both like a logical extension of Ry Cooder's multimedia global juggernaut, and a not-so-subtle reminder that new musical traditions are often carved out by ignoring geographic boundaries. --Keith Moerer

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant, Brilliant, Brilliant.......2006-08-27

Over-the-top reviews are hard to believe, but figure it -- why would anyone take the time to do this if they don't love or hate something? I LOVE this CD. It burst into my life a few months ago and it hasn't left. The best cut is "Me Voy Pa'l Pueblo" which is such an upbeat tour de force, both infectiously and musically. But that's just my first favorite. There are my other favorites: Siboney, Calle Dieceseis, El Pescador, Compay Gato, Campesino. Unbelievable amount of great songs and renditions on one CD. It's hard to believe this CD was recorded in one week, but it goes with the miracle that it is -- that this sort of meeting of talent and thrill doesn't happen often anyway so why shouldn't it happen in one week!

5 out of 5 stars Music to drink margaritas by..........2004-12-28

This is like a Mexican/Texan supergroup with various musicians mixing it up on various songs. Some of the musicians who come and go are Raul Malo, David Hidalgo, Cesar Rosas, Steve Berlin, Rick Trevino and many more talents. Every song is sung in either Spanish or Portuguese which usually makes it harder for me to appreciate but this CD is so great, I had no problem getting past the foreign lyrics. This is music to drink margaritas by!

5 out of 5 stars A fine mix.......2004-07-24

This album takes off in an interesting different direction for this group. I stumbled onto it on REal Rhapsody and was hooked right away. A fine mix of old standards that any latin music fan will recognize, but all done in distinctive, ear-catching ways. New tunes as well, and the funny but right addition of Veloso's Brazilian portuguese into the otherwise Spanish mix. Fairly straightforward arrangements but all performed with a clear passionate love for the music. Fine recording too. I'm a big latin music fan, have listened to the entire brilliant variety of musics from the latin world, and this album is right up there with the best.

5 out of 5 stars Latino Offering Much Diversity.......2003-08-29

This collection of Latino music and musicians from around globe is certainly in a trajectory away from Los Super Seven, but still in vein of the richness and beauty of this passionate music genre. Especially into "Me Voy Pa'l Pueblo" and "Teresa."

Neat added touch of comments by performers with the words and translation of each cut!

5 out of 5 stars Second Installment is a Smash.......2003-03-06

Canto, the second offering from Los Super Seven, is different from the debut album, but in a good way. Notably absent from this album is the norteño inspired accordion work of Flaco Jimenez, Canto expands beyond Mexican music and expertly interprets Caribbean and South American rhythms. Raul Malo's vocals on "Siboney" are particularly wonderful as is Rick Treviño's work on "El Que Siembra Su Maiz." The Super 7's tribute to Arlo Guthrie, on "Campesino", is especially warming to anyone who has ever known anyone who toils under the hot sun. Perhaps the best song on this album, after Siboney, is the Cuban standard, "Me Voy Pa'l Pueblo," which reminds me of lazy days on a Caribbean beach.

Many will compare this album to works by the Buena Vista Social Club, which is flattering and true only in that both albums are wonderful. The rhythms and artistry will render the fact that this is a Spanish language album moot. If you have a Susana Baca or Buena Vista inspired album in your collection, then you must purchase this album.

Over their 30 years together, Los Lobos have established themselves among the best live bands in America--which makes it all the more surprising that they've waited so long to release their first concert album (though anthologies have included live tracks). For this recording from the venerable Fillmore in San Francisco, the Los Angeles band forsakes the greatest-hits approach in favor of a set dominated by recent material interspersed with some lesser-known earlier tunes (such as "How Much Can I Do?"). Omitting perennials such as "Will the Wolf Survive?" and their hit cover of "La Bamba," the Mexican-American band treats fans to the soulful balladry of singer David Hidalgo on "Rita" and "Tears of God," the bluesier strains of Cesar Rosas on "I Walk Alone," and the saxophone of Steve Berlin and a percolating rhythm section throughout. The music extends the Los Lobos imprint from the arty atmospherics of "Kiko and the Lavender Room" to the social conscience of "The Neighborhood" and the encore of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On." Whether the material is in Spanish ("Maria Christina," "Maricela"), English (most of the rest), or bilingual (the flute-laced "Luz de Mi Vida"), the enraptured crowd requires no translation. --Don McLeese

4 out of 5 stars Los Lobos outrocks rock bands.......2006-08-10

i have come to think of Los Lobos as a sophisticated band with a long history of intricate songs, ballads and mexican influenced folk songs. Live at the Fillmore simply rocks. It makes me wonder why this band has not been featured on radio stations across the country, why they are not celibrated by young people who are trying desperately to find a band that can rock, why groups such as U2 and 70's rock dominate the airwaves, even though this band can rock their socks off?
The second cd is a throwaway of acoustic remakes of old Mexican stuff, and is way too short, but if you want to hear a greatest hits of hard guitar rock, take a listen to the first disc. And then answer the questions above.

4 out of 5 stars At last, a live CD by one of the best live bands .......2006-05-27

One star deducted for what's NOT here - the incendiary version of "Mas y Mas" (with pedal-steel hero Robert Randolph) which appears on the DVD version of this concert, and the "La Bamba"/"Good Lovin'" medley, a climactic live show staple. Only the toughest marker would quibble with what IS here - but it's a shame it's not a double or triple CD set.

5 out of 5 stars Los Lobos Essentials.......2005-09-27

If you're in doubt whether to buy this album of delightful songs, doubt no more! I have been a long time fan and really dig these live recordings of the "Band From East LA". The simple and elegeant renditions of "Kiko" and "Saint Behind the Glass" make the entire alum worth the purchase. Don't miss this one if you're a Lobos fan at all.

4 out of 5 stars A Band in need of a LIVE Box Set.......2005-04-06

Los Lobos rebounded from the cover band status of THE RIDE with the DVD of this concert a couple of months back. Critics wailed why they hadn't done a live CD or DVD before. Well, amen, especially if you have ever caught any of their shows. It's actually a pity that this is the only such document, because while it is certainly a great performance, it is only a taste of the magic they command. I may go to a million more concerts before I hear a band essay Neil Young's "Cowgirl in the Sand" the way these wolves knocked it out at the Philly Folk Festival while Gene Shay swallowed his tongue because the boys simply would not end the song and get off so he could prattle his stupid stories and jokes. For that alone, they became my heroes. Point is, even Young, on his very best day, never delivered that song with the incendiary fire of Los Lobos.
But I digress, and this is a worthy addition to their incredible canon. The only foul ball for me is "The Viking," but that's quibbling, because they more than make up for it with the mini CD of 3 acoustic songs, and I won't tell you what they are, but one was such a delightful surprise!
So, I'd tell you to pick this up. Hidalgo, Peres and compadres have never, or actaully ALWAYS, sound this good live. So where's the box set? This is a band you should rush to go see and if they do release a box, swamp AMAZON with orders for it. How will the Wolf survive? Well, with performances like these, should be easy.

5 out of 5 stars LIVE AT THE FILLMORE.......2005-04-02

I just picked up the new Los Lobos CD, LIVE AT THE FILLMORE. I'm not sure I'm listening to the same CD as the first two reviewers! This CD is outstanding. I'm a huge Los Lobos fan, so I may be a little biased, but I think even someone new to Los Lobos will enjoy this CD. The song selection is great, a mix of old and new material. As always, Los Lobos' playing is top notch. Although the sound quality is not outstanding, it is good. If you're a Los Lobos fan, you MUST add this to your collection. If you would like to try Los Lobos, I would recommend this as a good introduction to one of rock's best bands.

Easy comparisons to Los Lobos have long dogged New Orleans' own cross-cultural pot-stirrers, the Iguanas. But the band's return from a four-year recording respite here cuts a subtle, distinctive musical swath all its own, culminating in what's arguably the most rewarding album of their career. While informed on "Machete y Maiz," the evocative "Un Avion," and the haunting slinkiness of "Abandonado" by the same rich conjunto/Tex-Mex/Chicano R&B influences as their East L.A. soulmates, the band's creative axis of vocalists Rod Hodges and Joe Cabral and bassist Rene Coma (powered by drummer Doug Garrison and Derek Huston on sax) has inspired anything but a predictable artistic orbit here. Anchored by the loping, sunny pop daydream "Yesterday" and the title track's gently optimistic radio paean (a collaboration between Hodges and Dave Alvin), the band simmers zydeco, blues, and smart pop hooks into a mix that veers from the sly playfulness of "Sugarcane," "Mexican Candy," and the tragi-comic squalor of "The Liquor Dance" to more traditional party-hearty rhythms of "Flame On" and "Zacatecas." Its production is as subtle and spacious as its evocative songs, a languorous hour of music that evokes the dappled sunlight and fevered grooves of a half-dozen cultures. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars No Justice.......2005-02-21

The fickle pop marketplace often rewards bands like Los Lonely Boys while overlooking a band like the Iguanas. I really like this album. Also,if you can find it,check out their CD Super Ball. The Iguanas frequently tour and they play well live.

2 out of 5 stars No staying power.......2003-11-08

A very lackluster effort. Sophomoric lyrics and for the most part had nothing to distinguish itself. I liked the title track a lot, and a couple of other ballad type songs, but the rest was poorly done and little imagination.

4 out of 5 stars Low Voltage High Wattage.......2003-07-22

Buy this album. NOW! ??? Because, if you don't but it now, you will be kicking yourself later because it went of print so quickly or became instantly unavailable, unless nefarious means of obtention are your specialty. Try getting their album "Superball" now....There are 3 great kick start songs offering immediate listening pleasure. The balance all slip-slide into your daily routine ("...just like "Mexican Candy"..)through the bottom heavy groove that weaves its way thoughtout a finely produced album. No tinkley sounds here; these guys brood with the best of them.

4 out of 5 stars Summer time party fun.......2003-07-05

The Iguanas' "Plastic Silver and 9 Volt Heart" (Yep Roc) is one groove-y record, laidback, loping and made for a margarita in the summer shade or a cruise with the top down. There's nothing showy to the 13 cuts here, just a remarkably varied collection of easygoing music with healthy helping of Tex Mex stew. If you only own their debut album with the rollicking "Night of Sin," this is a time to take another listen to the boys from New Orleans.

The band recorded the disc live in the studio over eight days and it shows how they've progressed over the past decade. They take the timeworn basics of down home R&B, swamp rock and Tex Mex and mix and match, creating something new that fits as comfortably as a well-worn pair of jeans. This is confidently cool music, from the first blast of "Yesterday," a pop tune born of the marriage of Morphine and The Lovin' Spoonful, through the snaking twin sax blasts of "Zacatecas" on to the shuffling ballad that is "The First Kiss Is Free" and into the guitar rock of "I Dig You."

Of course, these guys know how to play party tunes. That's why Jimmy Buffett originally signed them to his label. Just listen to the dance-along cuts, "Flame On," which recalls Los Lobos, and "The Liquor Dance," sure to become a David Lindley favorite. With their electronically altered-vocals, they sound like remnants of an old mono rave-up.

Songwriter and vocalist Rod Hodges, with help from Dave Alvin on the title cut, has tendered his best set of tunes. And the boys in the band, multi-instrumentalist Rene Coman and Joe Cabral, tenor saxman Derek Huston and drummer Doug Garrison have conjured up a soundtrack for the summer.

5 out of 5 stars It gets better and better.......2003-06-04

I am a new Iguanas fan with this album. The track "Mexican Candy" moves between spanish and english seamlessly with the sweetest sax solo in the middle. Lyrics are sublime and the instrumentals are sweet and well-placed. Well produced, with a great sound, I would highly recommend this to anyone with an hankering for rockabilly and a new orleans sound without a heavy zydeco beat. Listen to the samples and check out the great lyrics and cool vibe from these guys.
