It took hip-hop a couple of decades to become ingrained in pop music, but the genre's influence shows on Len's You Can't Stop the Bum Rush. The members of Len might not agree--after all, they probably consider themselves a hip-hop act, and they've got a case, what with their lineup (which incorporates a DJ and a couple of MCs), their use of loops and samples (from the Andrea True Connection, the Bar Kays, Grandmaster Flash & Melle Mel, and the big mack daddy himself, John Travolta), and guests like Biz Markie, Kurtis Blow, and Mr. Dibbs. But there's something very pop at the core of Len, and it's what makes Bum Rush so special--as hip-hop becomes harder and more experimental, Len rediscover a very vital part of the history. Filled with keyboards, dance rhythms, harmonies, stoner humor, and Sugar Ray-ish party vocals, Bum Rush is pure pop for the hip-hop generation. The album keeps things light but never skimps in delivering single after single; they may all prove disposable, but why worry about that now? --Randy SilverCustomer Reviews:

Reminds me of summer!.......2006-08-15
It's hard to explain what kind of music is on this CD. There's some rap, hip-hop, a little bit of soul, and even some techno. I've never heard such a mix. Sure that makes it a little odd at first, but it kinda grows on you. It's a pretty good variety, but I must admit some of the songs are a little odd.
So, on that note, I would buy the single for "Steal My Sunshine" if that's the only song you are interested in, but like I said, you might be able to find this entire album for a fabulous price, like I did with BMg.

The team of composer Jerry Bock and lyricist Sheldon Harnick came up with only six shows--but what shows! In addition to the phenomenally successful Fiddler on the Roof, aficionados usually gush about 1963's She Loves Me and 1959's Fiorello!. The latter turned a not particularly appetizing topic--the years leading to Fiorello LaGuardia's election as mayor of New York--into a great musical. (It even won the Pulitzer Prize for drama, only the third musical to do so.) Harnick and Bock's versatility was in evidence as they wrote numbers in every Broadway style: novelty, ballad (about sweatshops), duet (the absurdly catchy and funny "Marie's Law"), and, of course, a rousing number that doesn't really fit anywhere but is so good that it simply must be included (Eileen Rodgers's "Gentleman Jimmy"). This may be one of the wittiest, most melodic shows you've never heard. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:

a classic, underrated Broadway gem.......2003-11-04
The score, an early collaboration from Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick (SHE LOVES ME, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF) is very strong, and includes several show-pieces like "Politics and Poker", "Little Tin Box" and "On the Side of the Angels".
Ellen Hanley (who had previously been criminally under-used as Polly Bergen's understudy in FIRST IMPRESSIONS) glows in the role of feisty Thea, the sweatshop workers' leader. She has two of the score's best ballads, "'Til Tomorrow" and "When Did I Fall in Love".
Pat Stanley (who earned a Tony for her performance in the disastrous GOLDILOCKS) gets the cute number "I Love a Cop". Eileen Rodgers (who later starred in a successful off-Broadway revival of ANYTHING GOES) sings the showstopping "Gentleman Jimmy", a manic flapper tune. FIORELLO! is a fantastic show in that it has no less than 3 strong female roles.
For those who only started following Tom Bosley's career during his 'Happy Days', the fact that he was a top-drawer musical theater talent will come as a big surprise. Bosley played the entire run of 795 performances. Bosley later made many more successful Broadway appearances including BEAUTY AND THE BEAST and (as of this review's writing) a triumphant stint in the Sam Mendes revival of CABARET.
This lovely reissue on the Angel Broadway label sounds as fresh as paint. An excellent remaster job and an excellent cast album.

With Yo! Bum Rush the Show, Public Enemy introduce a new kind of bravado that's not just directed at other players and sucker MCs but is an out-and-out middle-finger challenge to the whole world, as these serious brothers roll right over you in a slow-moving convoy of 98 Oldsmobiles ("You're Gonna Get Yours"). PE crowd these tracks with disparate sounds that move your butt while they buzz from every channel. Despite their serious posturing, you'll be grateful for the sloppy bass line in "Timebomb" and Terminator X's brilliant tone experiment, "Public Enemy No. 1." Yo! isn't PE's masterpiece, but it's a truly standout album, a warning shot for the full-scale assault they would later initiate on It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back. --Todd LevinCustomer Reviews:
The beginning of the Public Enemy legacy--.......2007-06-04
Formerly a loose congregate of college-radio DJs and party promoters in the Long Island area, `Spectrum City' became Public Enemy when Def Jam exec Rick Rubin allegedly badgered Chuck D into accepting a record deal; Chuck insisted that Flav come along, and hip-hop history was begun. Along with producers Bill Stephney and Hank Shocklee, Chuck and company considered themselves hip-hop's answer to the Clash: The first album as almost a punk effort, more about rhythm & noise rather than rhythm & blues. The LP opens with "You're Gonna Get Yours", Chuck and Flav's ode to the Oldsmobile 98: "Smoke is coming, when I burn/ rubber when my wheels turn; tinted windows so super-bad; looking like the car the Green Hornet had." The riskiest cut may have been "Sophisticated Bi*ch": hardcore metal guitar (courtesy of Vernon Reid) and hip-hop bassline make for a powerful punch. The lyrics rail against a loose woman, though later statements by Chuck assert that this was an allegorical rant against the policies of urban radio stations at the time. Other standout joints include "Public Enemy #1" (covered years later by Puff Daddy), "Miuzi Weighs a Ton", "Timebomb" ("They go `ooh!' and `ah!' when I jump in my car, people treat me like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.."), and the anti-crack-cocaine diatribe "Megablast". This is the true beginning of the PE dynasty, even before "Nation of Millions". Not to be missed.

Stand out hits are "You Gonna Get Yours", "Miuzi Weighs a Ton", the title track, and....well hey, I'm not gonna sit here and list like 9 of the 12 tracks I dig....too much typing! :) Suffice it to say, to any old schooler (who was in high school like me when this first came out) or to any young head who wants to educate themselves to when Hip-Hop music truly had something to say, this is your album to purchase! After this, exhale and then get "Fear of a Black Planet" and then...take a pause, and then get their all-time greatest (the 5-mic classic as far as I'm concerned) "It takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back".
How I miss conscious Hip-Hop! Eons away from this rap mess today. And if you don't know the difference between Hip-Hop music and rap music, IMMEDIATELY purchase Boogie Down Productions/KRS-One and Eric B & Rakim!

Gershwin historical, manic, perfect, archival.......2006-06-12
Second: Jack Gibbons plays (and has recorded) the Alkan op 39 etudes (he probably plays a lot more Alkan than that). For those of you not in the know, this is to say he has world-class chops, indeed history-class (Liszt, who never played his friend Alkan, at least in public). But it's also to say that Gibbons knows how to interpret and personalize fantastically difficult piano music. For me, his Alkan op 39 is personal and passionate and real (contrast the facile and over-pedalled Hamelin and the just-the-notes-ma'me Ringeissen). An appreciation of Gibbons' Alkan is important here because while his Alkan is uniquely personal (as such music must be, no matter how hard it is to play) his Gershwin is deliberately impersonal...which is to say: no pianist, no singer would want to reproduce what Gibbons has given us in these 4 cd's, and in fact few listeners will be able to listen for long to these 4 cd's without a respite, a break , some silence, some minimal styling from somebody (anybody) else...which brings me to
Third: This is an archive, not a recital. This is a library, not a program. There is no track-by-track contrast of moods here, no track-by-track concession to easy listening, varied delight, any more than a library shelf of novels is alphabetized by authors' last names as a concession to mood or fancy or taste of the searching patron. This is the documented Gershwin in his recording mode: manic, notey, clever, "on", and never, as generations of stylists found in him, ravishing, tender, longing, sweet, glad, hopeful...person-to-person, in a word. I can listen to these cd's about half an hour at a time, max. This is Gerwhsin, not Gibbons. And this is just one side of Gershwin. He died at 38, in the summer. Brain tumor. A lot of pain.
Finally, Jack Gibbons has given the world a uniquely valuable and easily available resource. Gibbons could now do us a service by playing us some Gershwin as he feels it, as it hits him and makes him sing (as Gershwin, our American Schubert, does to all of us, and as I think Alkan has done to Gibbons). I would love to see a Gershwin stylings by Gibbons now that Gibbons himself has made sure Gershwin in his authenticity is safe and sound.
Definative.......2005-07-23
Gibbons, according to a family friend and biographer Edward jablonski "recreates Gershwin's style." I'll never know. I can say this is a lively recording and has the perfect balance. It's neither stuffy and plodding or cute.

Get this and be entertained. Also look for "RED" the movie. I think it came out on the Film Threat label about 9 or 10 years ago. You'll love it once you see it. You'll love this disc too.
Sheer Hysterical Rants!.......2002-08-25
During the 1970s, these folks repeatedly called the cantankerous old owner of "The Tube Bar" in Jersey City, asking him to page their friends like "Al Koholic," "Jim Nasium," and "Stan Dupp." Red falls for some, but curses in the foulest language you'll ever hear when he realizes he's been had!
It's puzzling; these calls do not have the creative characters or set-ups that the Jerky Boys utilize. Yet every time I play the simplistic and repetetive harrassment of old Red for my friends, they nearly pass out in tears of laughter. Same with me first time I listened to the CD. In fact, I still crack up at this work!
There was a lot of talk and urban legend in regards to who made these calls and the story behind Red. One story claimed Red got so angry and pent-up with the calls that he keeled over from a heart attack in the bar. Several years back, a pop-culture fanzine researched the "Tube Bar" phenomena, and found that Red, while indeed being the cranky old man he was, was a respected member of the Jersey City scene. The calls did not do him in, though. He sold the bar and retired to Florida in 1980, and lived to a ripe old age. So--- feel no guilt when you hear Red go ballistic over these wisecrackers--- he lived the good life!
This often overlooked CD is classic. Easily on the top 5 in the growing collection of crank call recordings!

Hazlewood Rarities.......2007-04-11
With the recent acquisition of the double reissue of Poet, Fool, or Bum/Back On the Street Again, I am well on my way to completion of my Hazlewood CD collection. Both of these records (here combined) were released only in Europe in the mid-70s, so listening to this is to hear what he was doing at a time when many thought he had disappeared.
It took me a couple of listens to really like this, but I eventually came around. This is far more country than pop. While these are not his best records, there is a lot here to like. My favorites are: Poet, Fool, or Bum; Kari; Feathers, Nancy and Me; Back On the Street Again; Your Thunder and Your Lightning; Suddenly Tennessee, Dolly and Hawkeye, and Dolly Parton's Guitar. Hearing once again how lyrically clever Hazlewood can be, I can see why so many alt-rock musicians look to him for inspiration.
If you have yet to hear this bunch of Hazlewood rarities, give it a listen. In addition to the CD, the buyer gets an informative booklet. At the low price on offer here, you can't go wrong.
