It took hip-hop a couple of decades to become ingrained in pop music, but the genre's influence shows on Len's You Can't Stop the Bum Rush. The members of Len might not agree--after all, they probably consider themselves a hip-hop act, and they've got a case, what with their lineup (which incorporates a DJ and a couple of MCs), their use of loops and samples (from the Andrea True Connection, the Bar Kays, Grandmaster Flash & Melle Mel, and the big mack daddy himself, John Travolta), and guests like Biz Markie, Kurtis Blow, and Mr. Dibbs. But there's something very pop at the core of Len, and it's what makes Bum Rush so special--as hip-hop becomes harder and more experimental, Len rediscover a very vital part of the history. Filled with keyboards, dance rhythms, harmonies, stoner humor, and Sugar Ray-ish party vocals, Bum Rush is pure pop for the hip-hop generation. The album keeps things light but never skimps in delivering single after single; they may all prove disposable, but why worry about that now? --Randy Silver

5 out of 5 stars Something for everyone.......2007-07-23

If you only like Steal My Sunshine, then you don't like music. This album has so many different styles it's amazing it all fit on one cd. Each song is different, and you can't say that much these days. Do yourself a favor and give it a listen.

4 out of 5 stars Reminds me of summer!.......2006-08-15

I can't explain it, but this CD, particularly the song "Steal My Sunshine", has always reminded me of summer and my childhood. I grew up listening and loving that song since the day it came out, and I just recently bought it from BMG for $1.99.

It's hard to explain what kind of music is on this CD. There's some rap, hip-hop, a little bit of soul, and even some techno. I've never heard such a mix. Sure that makes it a little odd at first, but it kinda grows on you. It's a pretty good variety, but I must admit some of the songs are a little odd.

So, on that note, I would buy the single for "Steal My Sunshine" if that's the only song you are interested in, but like I said, you might be able to find this entire album for a fabulous price, like I did with BMg.

2 out of 5 stars One Hit Wonder.......2006-07-20

I am a rock and roll person. I hate rap. This is a rap/pop album that first came out when I was eight; "Steal My Sunshine" was big on my list. That is still a good song, however, I don't really like their other songs. Just buy the single of "Steal My Sunshine"- it will save you money.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Mix of old school hip-hop with new school pop.......2006-01-10

Love every song on this Album. I bought because of Steal my Sunshine. I love techno and some Old school hip-hop. I hate gangsta rap. You won't find any gangsta rap on this album. That's why I like it. It plays the old school white boy rap which I love. The whole album has a fun light-hearted feel to it. It's a shame this band never became more successful.

1 out of 5 stars A CD I tried to sell and no one would buy.......2005-02-10

This cd is horrible. It starts of with a couple catchy pops songs that Carson Daily liked then all the sudden, they bust out some rap. Canadians can't rap, I DEMAND JUSTICE!!!!

The team of composer Jerry Bock and lyricist Sheldon Harnick came up with only six shows--but what shows! In addition to the phenomenally successful Fiddler on the Roof, aficionados usually gush about 1963's She Loves Me and 1959's Fiorello!. The latter turned a not particularly appetizing topic--the years leading to Fiorello LaGuardia's election as mayor of New York--into a great musical. (It even won the Pulitzer Prize for drama, only the third musical to do so.) Harnick and Bock's versatility was in evidence as they wrote numbers in every Broadway style: novelty, ballad (about sweatshops), duet (the absurdly catchy and funny "Marie's Law"), and, of course, a rousing number that doesn't really fit anywhere but is so good that it simply must be included (Eileen Rodgers's "Gentleman Jimmy"). This may be one of the wittiest, most melodic shows you've never heard. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Great music. Only; I wish I had a DVD of the show.....

5 out of 5 stars A sleeper of the first order.......2007-03-06

Fiorello is a very dark comedy about the corrupt back-room politics, croneyism, and skulduggery surrounding Fiorello laGuardia's political career. Oh, and there's a romance thrown in. "Politics and Poker" in particular has a timely poignancy in light of the runup to the 2008 elections with Clinton, Obama, and -um - whoever the heck else is on the Democrat wanna-be list. I have to think there are some pretty stark parallels here. But then, that's what this timeless, delightful sleeper of an operetta is all about.

2 out of 5 stars A new York-centric non-hit .......2006-11-15

This never rose to the level of a 'hit'. At this time (2006) it is dated
technically and artisticly. It didn't win in '59, there is little hope that it will be remembered fondly in '06.
In the end I bought it for archival purposes only and I'm being kind.

5 out of 5 stars Laguardia isn't just an airport.......2006-08-07

Fiorello! was basically a play about New York City's great mayor, Fiorello Laguardia, that was turned into a musical by having an overture and 14 songs. Long ago, back in the late 1950s, I saw it as a child and really liked it - I've always wondered what it would be like to hear it again. Well, it is nothing less than spectacular! It has the best song about politcal corruption (!) ever written, Little Tin Box; a great song about a broken date, Marie's Law; a lyrical paean to back-room politics, Politics and Poker; and 11 others, all equally good (in fact, there's not a single dud in the score - as you would expect since it was written by the writers who did Fiddler on the Roof). The voices are great, the lyrics are all to the point, the music is unforgettable, and, for all those who don't know the story, the disc notes are really helpful. Maybe this is politcs seen through rose-tinted glasses, but it's wonderful to hear!

4 out of 5 stars a classic, underrated Broadway gem.......2003-11-04

FIORELLO! is a lovely, ahead-of-its-time musical, based on the career of New York mayor Fiorello La Guardia. It starred Tom Bosley as La Guardia with a dream cast including Ellen Hanley, Pat Stanley and Eileen Rodgers.

The score, an early collaboration from Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick (SHE LOVES ME, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF) is very strong, and includes several show-pieces like "Politics and Poker", "Little Tin Box" and "On the Side of the Angels".

Ellen Hanley (who had previously been criminally under-used as Polly Bergen's understudy in FIRST IMPRESSIONS) glows in the role of feisty Thea, the sweatshop workers' leader. She has two of the score's best ballads, "'Til Tomorrow" and "When Did I Fall in Love".

Pat Stanley (who earned a Tony for her performance in the disastrous GOLDILOCKS) gets the cute number "I Love a Cop". Eileen Rodgers (who later starred in a successful off-Broadway revival of ANYTHING GOES) sings the showstopping "Gentleman Jimmy", a manic flapper tune. FIORELLO! is a fantastic show in that it has no less than 3 strong female roles.

For those who only started following Tom Bosley's career during his 'Happy Days', the fact that he was a top-drawer musical theater talent will come as a big surprise. Bosley played the entire run of 795 performances. Bosley later made many more successful Broadway appearances including BEAUTY AND THE BEAST and (as of this review's writing) a triumphant stint in the Sam Mendes revival of CABARET.

This lovely reissue on the Angel Broadway label sounds as fresh as paint. An excellent remaster job and an excellent cast album.

With Yo! Bum Rush the Show, Public Enemy introduce a new kind of bravado that's not just directed at other players and sucker MCs but is an out-and-out middle-finger challenge to the whole world, as these serious brothers roll right over you in a slow-moving convoy of 98 Oldsmobiles ("You're Gonna Get Yours"). PE crowd these tracks with disparate sounds that move your butt while they buzz from every channel. Despite their serious posturing, you'll be grateful for the sloppy bass line in "Timebomb" and Terminator X's brilliant tone experiment, "Public Enemy No. 1." Yo! isn't PE's masterpiece, but it's a truly standout album, a warning shot for the full-scale assault they would later initiate on It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back. --Todd Levin

4 out of 5 stars The beginning of the Public Enemy legacy--.......2007-06-04

Yo! Bum Rush the Show-
Formerly a loose congregate of college-radio DJs and party promoters in the Long Island area, `Spectrum City' became Public Enemy when Def Jam exec Rick Rubin allegedly badgered Chuck D into accepting a record deal; Chuck insisted that Flav come along, and hip-hop history was begun. Along with producers Bill Stephney and Hank Shocklee, Chuck and company considered themselves hip-hop's answer to the Clash: The first album as almost a punk effort, more about rhythm & noise rather than rhythm & blues. The LP opens with "You're Gonna Get Yours", Chuck and Flav's ode to the Oldsmobile 98: "Smoke is coming, when I burn/ rubber when my wheels turn; tinted windows so super-bad; looking like the car the Green Hornet had." The riskiest cut may have been "Sophisticated Bi*ch": hardcore metal guitar (courtesy of Vernon Reid) and hip-hop bassline make for a powerful punch. The lyrics rail against a loose woman, though later statements by Chuck assert that this was an allegorical rant against the policies of urban radio stations at the time. Other standout joints include "Public Enemy #1" (covered years later by Puff Daddy), "Miuzi Weighs a Ton", "Timebomb" ("They go `ooh!' and `ah!' when I jump in my car, people treat me like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.."), and the anti-crack-cocaine diatribe "Megablast". This is the true beginning of the PE dynasty, even before "Nation of Millions". Not to be missed.

4 out of 5 stars If you're expecting the usual Public Enemy, you'll be surprised.......2006-03-16

This is a really strong album, although there are a few misses, and that's understandable, since this is P.E.'s first album. It does sound like the Public Enemy that would become world famous hip-hop icons on a few tracks, but for the most part this album sounds like a transition from old school rap to Public Enemy's own sound as heard on albums two through whatever they're on now. You can hear it in the way Chuck D raps- he sounds like himself, but with an almost Run DMC timing. It's still great, but not indespensible like It Takes a Nation of Millions or Fear of a Black Planet. I'd suggest buying this album, but either get a good deal on it, or get it after you've gotten better Public Enemy albums.

4 out of 5 stars Public Enemy.......2006-02-18

This was always one of my favorite albums/tapes & I wanted the CD. IT is in great condition. Thanks so much

5 out of 5 stars If you don't know; you better ask somebody.......2006-01-30

In the 80's, I never missed a Public Enemy concert. You can't be a true hip-hop master unless you know where it began. Public Enemy's music had a message. Nearly all rap in the 80's had a message, unlike todays music. This is an outstanding CD!! Do not hesitate one second; buy this CD right now!! It is worth it!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Conscious Hip-Hop at it's finest!!.......2005-09-22

This was only the introduction, but what an introduction!!! Their best work (in my opinion) was yet to come, but "Yo, Bum Rush The Show" was and is the truth!!

Stand out hits are "You Gonna Get Yours", "Miuzi Weighs a Ton", the title track, and....well hey, I'm not gonna sit here and list like 9 of the 12 tracks I dig....too much typing! :) Suffice it to say, to any old schooler (who was in high school like me when this first came out) or to any young head who wants to educate themselves to when Hip-Hop music truly had something to say, this is your album to purchase! After this, exhale and then get "Fear of a Black Planet" and then...take a pause, and then get their all-time greatest (the 5-mic classic as far as I'm concerned) "It takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back".

How I miss conscious Hip-Hop! Eons away from this rap mess today. And if you don't know the difference between Hip-Hop music and rap music, IMMEDIATELY purchase Boogie Down Productions/KRS-One and Eric B & Rakim!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent performer.......2007-03-09

This plates are wonderful. I was charmed, and when I close my eyes now, I see scenes with American in Paris or Porgy and Bess but my favorite piece of music is Rhapsody in Blue. It's more than excellent is fantastic. Jack Gibbons perfectly feels the unique tone Gershwin's music, the mixture rythms of jazz with influences of impressionists and clear and beauty melodies.
I'm fascinating.

5 out of 5 stars A unique project.......2006-11-23

Gibbons' undertaking is unique: to reconstruct and then execute and record the note-for-note playing of Gershwin as documented on the composers' piano rolls, sound recordings and certain published arrangements. I agree with the reviewer who points out that the result is like a library and not a recital you sit back and listen to (or get up and dance to). In fact Gibbons does some editing of his "library" now and then, and clearly documents it in his liner notes: in some reconstructions he augments accompaniment effects and even the melodic line itself. I don't mind that at all, especially as Gibbons scrupulously accounts for such tampering in his liner notes; but it seems to me that it is in this area of "tampering" that Gibbons the artist is asserting himself...which of course undermines the "library", the "historical archive": you have to search and read a bit to find out when you're hearing only Gershwin and when you're hearing some added Gibbons. I don't mind; Gibbons is a remarkable artist in his own right, not merely an impeccable documentarian. For sheer generosity of production Gibbons' Gershwin must also be unique: 4 cd's, scholar-level liner notes (yes, you need a magnifying glass to read them), and rock-bottom bargain price.

5 out of 5 stars Gershwin historical, manic, perfect, archival.......2006-06-12

First: this is 4 high-end produced cd's (in low-end jewel cases) for the price of 2. The liner notes of all 4 cd's are condensed in a booklet of microscopic print, so you may need to spend the savings on a magnifying glass. MONEY WELL SPENT.
Second: Jack Gibbons plays (and has recorded) the Alkan op 39 etudes (he probably plays a lot more Alkan than that). For those of you not in the know, this is to say he has world-class chops, indeed history-class (Liszt, who never played his friend Alkan, at least in public). But it's also to say that Gibbons knows how to interpret and personalize fantastically difficult piano music. For me, his Alkan op 39 is personal and passionate and real (contrast the facile and over-pedalled Hamelin and the just-the-notes-ma'me Ringeissen). An appreciation of Gibbons' Alkan is important here because while his Alkan is uniquely personal (as such music must be, no matter how hard it is to play) his Gershwin is deliberately impersonal...which is to say: no pianist, no singer would want to reproduce what Gibbons has given us in these 4 cd's, and in fact few listeners will be able to listen for long to these 4 cd's without a respite, a break , some silence, some minimal styling from somebody (anybody) else...which brings me to
Third: This is an archive, not a recital. This is a library, not a program. There is no track-by-track contrast of moods here, no track-by-track concession to easy listening, varied delight, any more than a library shelf of novels is alphabetized by authors' last names as a concession to mood or fancy or taste of the searching patron. This is the documented Gershwin in his recording mode: manic, notey, clever, "on", and never, as generations of stylists found in him, ravishing, tender, longing, sweet, glad, hopeful...person-to-person, in a word. I can listen to these cd's about half an hour at a time, max. This is Gerwhsin, not Gibbons. And this is just one side of Gershwin. He died at 38, in the summer. Brain tumor. A lot of pain.
Finally, Jack Gibbons has given the world a uniquely valuable and easily available resource. Gibbons could now do us a service by playing us some Gershwin as he feels it, as it hits him and makes him sing (as Gershwin, our American Schubert, does to all of us, and as I think Alkan has done to Gibbons). I would love to see a Gershwin stylings by Gibbons now that Gibbons himself has made sure Gershwin in his authenticity is safe and sound.

5 out of 5 stars Definative.......2005-07-23

Here's the whole Gershwin catalog at a great price... Five plus hours of bliss. Definately five stars!

Gibbons, according to a family friend and biographer Edward jablonski "recreates Gershwin's style." I'll never know. I can say this is a lively recording and has the perfect balance. It's neither stuffy and plodding or cute.

3 out of 5 stars You yellow rat bastard!.......2006-03-13

This CD features the legendary crank phone call tapes made to "Red", the owner of The Tube Bar. Some guys with nothing better to do would call up Red and ask him to page someone with a name like "Al Coholic" or "Ben Dover". As often as not, Red would fall for it, although he would often mispronounce the name they asked for. When Red didn't get fooled, he would go off on a profanity laced tirade on the caller. The callers actually come across as a bit cowardly, because Red would challenge them to meet him and fight, and they would never show up. The CD also features the same guys calling "Tom", an Italian grocer, and "Judy", a barmaid. These people would also go off on profane tirades against the callers. The crank callers aren't actually funny at all. The humor comes from hearing the obscene tirades that the angry victims go off on. Here is the track listing:

    1. Tube Bar - Red
    2. Red's Crapper
    3. Tom
    4. Interlude
    5. Judy
    6. Red Again

    1 out of 5 stars Disgusting, Unfunny.......2005-02-03

If you've never heard profane insults before, then maybe you'll laugh at this. If you require more thought & creativity to make you laugh, then this isn't for you. This is nasty and pointless.

5 out of 5 stars The most famous crank calls of all time!.......2004-09-08

The Tube Bar Recordings are classic! Everyone has copies and quoted the BBBs. Even better than this is the Special DVD/CD Combo put out by the BBBs themselves, that contains a video DVD, tons of new stuff and all digitally restored & remastered. I reccomend that over this one, though it doesn't seem to be sold on Amazon. You can buy it from http://bbb.audiolockbox.com

If you're not willing to spend the $30, this CD is for you and is also a good start for any BBB ot crank call fans!

4 out of 5 stars Good, but if you're looking..........2004-02-18

...for something deeper into this whole "Tube Bar" scene, look for a movie called "RED" which features Laurence Tierney who later went on to star in "Resevior Dogs" and in a few episodes of Seinfeld (as Elaine's dad). "RED" is made in black and white and is truly made up of still shots that are rapidly pieced together. Theses calls are played in the background, along with the occasional clatter of shot glasses and tumblers. Laurence Tierney is the perfect Red, and gives you a fantastic insight and background/history of these recordings. Indeed the reviewer below me is dead-on right - Moe Zisclack is ripped directly off by Red when he deals with Bart's prank calls.

Get this and be entertained. Also look for "RED" the movie. I think it came out on the Film Threat label about 9 or 10 years ago. You'll love it once you see it. You'll love this disc too.

5 out of 5 stars Sheer Hysterical Rants!.......2002-08-25

You wonder where they got the inspiration for "Moe the Bartender," victim of Bart's prank phone calls? It's right here, these are the real life prank calls made years ago.

During the 1970s, these folks repeatedly called the cantankerous old owner of "The Tube Bar" in Jersey City, asking him to page their friends like "Al Koholic," "Jim Nasium," and "Stan Dupp." Red falls for some, but curses in the foulest language you'll ever hear when he realizes he's been had!

It's puzzling; these calls do not have the creative characters or set-ups that the Jerky Boys utilize. Yet every time I play the simplistic and repetetive harrassment of old Red for my friends, they nearly pass out in tears of laughter. Same with me first time I listened to the CD. In fact, I still crack up at this work!

There was a lot of talk and urban legend in regards to who made these calls and the story behind Red. One story claimed Red got so angry and pent-up with the calls that he keeled over from a heart attack in the bar. Several years back, a pop-culture fanzine researched the "Tube Bar" phenomena, and found that Red, while indeed being the cranky old man he was, was a respected member of the Jersey City scene. The calls did not do him in, though. He sold the bar and retired to Florida in 1980, and lived to a ripe old age. So--- feel no guilt when you hear Red go ballistic over these wisecrackers--- he lived the good life!

This often overlooked CD is classic. Easily on the top 5 in the growing collection of crank call recordings!

    4 out of 5 stars Hazlewood Rarities.......2007-04-11

Like many others my age, I didn't pay a whole lot of attention to Lee Hazlewood or his music while he was in the semi-limelight, but came to know and love his music much later on. Several years ago, I chanced to hear a compilation of covers of Lee Hazlewood songs called Total Lee. I liked it and became hooked almost immediately. Since then, I have acquired most available Hazlewood recordings and have become somewhat of a connoisseur of his dark humor and ribald connotations.
With the recent acquisition of the double reissue of Poet, Fool, or Bum/Back On the Street Again, I am well on my way to completion of my Hazlewood CD collection. Both of these records (here combined) were released only in Europe in the mid-70s, so listening to this is to hear what he was doing at a time when many thought he had disappeared.
It took me a couple of listens to really like this, but I eventually came around. This is far more country than pop. While these are not his best records, there is a lot here to like. My favorites are: Poet, Fool, or Bum; Kari; Feathers, Nancy and Me; Back On the Street Again; Your Thunder and Your Lightning; Suddenly Tennessee, Dolly and Hawkeye, and Dolly Parton's Guitar. Hearing once again how lyrically clever Hazlewood can be, I can see why so many alt-rock musicians look to him for inspiration.
If you have yet to hear this bunch of Hazlewood rarities, give it a listen. In addition to the CD, the buyer gets an informative booklet. At the low price on offer here, you can't go wrong.

Since I First Met Him Here In Sweden, I`ve Alwas Liked This Guy. He Got Something That`s Hard To Explain. But His Voice Just Sounds Great

5 out of 5 stars Can Hazlewood do any wrong? I haven't heard it..........2006-08-25

Here ya got 2 great albums by Mr. Hazlewood. The songs Poet, Fool, or Bum (one of Lee's greatest), Heaven is my Woman's Love, and Smokey Put a Sweat on Me are excellent additions to the Hazlewood catalogue. Some of the songs have a bit of a 70's feel to them, but I dig the 1970's, probably the last really creative decade in America. Add another CD to your Hazlewood catalogue....

    4 out of 5 stars The Boodang.......2005-09-21

Panned when it came out and then the damn thing just upped and disappeared for lord knows how long. I got a cut-out-bin copy of the LP at the old DiscoMat in New York for a buck ninety-nine back in the day and it rocked my world for who knows how long. If you love Tony Williams during the fiery fusion period, this is a must. And he has a full-throttle vocalist named Tequila working for those who don't dig the disembodied head-trips that used to warble out of his mouth. It's not great, but there are some electrifying moments here. "You Make It Easy" expertly mixed the heady, empowered black soul of the day with his whirlwind drum-driven jazz rock, and "The Boodang," with its torrential drumming over an eerie moog blast is a first-rate treat. This was the album before the crushing power of his collaboration with Allan Holdworth on "Believe It," before he let go the organic idealism of "Ego." It's not the greatest thing you'll ever hear, and some of it is as moldy as the cheese in the back of a crack house fridge, but for fans it's a must. Belly up and pay the piper. $31.99 indeed.
