Customer Reviews:
Simply Brilliant!.......2007-02-02
I have both Russell and Williams and just finished giving Williams a five star review as well. Yep: I cannot help you by pointing to one or the other as being better in any way. Williams is very direct and tackles each piece effortlessly, and in particular executes the tambora technique better than Russell, (or at least, it's recorded better). Russell meanwhile (as many point out) has a peculiar ability to inject more mood and/or feeling into a given piece - not just the (boring) drama of slower numbers either, but also the excitement and energy of faster numbers. Because of this it's really well worth your while to pick up EVERYTHING Russell has recorded: I've yet to encounter something I didn't like a LOT.
I particularly enjoy the Danza Paraguaya tunes featured here, but prefer Williams for Cueca, and for his inclusion of Maxixa and Aconquija... in short: you've got to get both to fully appreciate the genius of Barrios!
6 Stars.......2007-01-11
This is some of the most difficult guitar music ever written. David Russell makes these pieces sound like they were of average difficulty and his spontaneity is incredible. Much more spontaneous than Williams. Williams takes some liberty when making chord changes, etc. and it almost becomes redundant and boring. Russell does none of that. All of the pieces are flowing and absolutely beautiful. The feeling of the pieces comes shining through. There is so much going on in this music which makes it so interesting and Russell overlooks nothing. Much of these compositions sound like there are two guitars as you will see when you listen to this. There is no guitar composition like a Barrios composition. Amazing.
Alexander-Sergei Ramirez.......2006-08-25
I think I've listen 5-6 different versions for many of Barrios works. From all of them, the one that stands out is the CD from Alexander-Sergei Ramirez.
damned fine Barrios.......2005-05-31
This is one of the first CDs that I listened to when getting into classical guitar and classical music in general and I couldn't think of a better one for a Barrios lover. Russell's rubato is sparing and tasteful (if you want to hear excessive rubato check out Norbert Kraft) and his tremolo technique is well-honed. He absolutely KILLS "En Sueno en la Floresta" and his "Ultima Cancion" is very moving. And he makes the Waltz Op. 8 No. 4 sound like 2 guitars playing.
This album will always be compared to John Williams's and in the end I think Russell's is better; Williams's reputation for being to mechanistic is well-earned in my opinion and his "Ultima Cancion" doesn't quite do it for me like Russell's does. It's a shame that Julian Bream never extensively recorded this music, it would be interesting to hear what he could do with it.

Customer Reviews:
Awesome and beautiful.......2007-02-13
I am a huge fan of Brasil 66, but with this debut album by Brasil 77, there's just more of the greatness that is Sergio Mendes. My 2 favorite tracks on the CD are Morro Velho a song that is lead by Gracinha Leporace. Gracinha has such a powerful voice and was a great replacement for Lani Hall. The other song I like a lot is Zanzibar. This is a great jazz/fusion number featuring Mendes solo on keyboards. Zanzibar shows why Mendes is a phenomenal jazz musician.
New beginnings but with the same classic sound.......2005-12-31
"She's gone, she's gone, it'll take the Devil to replace her." Yeah, I know that was *Daryl* Hall, not Lani, but that's probably what Sergio was thinking after his longtime lead vocalist who gave him his signature vocal sound, left Brasil '66 to pursue her solo career and, ultimately, become Mrs. Herb Alpert. But the ever-alluring Karen Philipp, who had been singing with Mendes since 1968, was there to pick up the slack, and while she may not have had the power and intimacy of Lani Hall, she has her own distinctive vocal charms, which are abundantly on display on the two gorgeous Paul Williams selections, "Gone Forever" (one of the most beautiful ballads Mendes has ever recorded), and the somewhat slighter "So Many People" (which boasts a great, sadly uncredited, harmonica solo). Mrs. Mendes, Gracinha Leporace, handles the Brasilian material with her typical gusto, including the beautiful Milton Nascimento penned "Morro Velho." Other standouts on this album are the fantastic vocalese and acoustic piano solo of "Zanzibar" (though, strangely, the Japanese import CD omits the "guitar tune up" that was on the original LP release--maybe they thought it was an error, I personally always loved it as a little window into the recording session), and the gutsy sax of Tom Scott on the propulsive 7/4 reworking of "After Midnight." This was a promising start to a "second phase" of Mendes' career that did not reap the market dividends that Brasil '66 did, but that nonetheless has a multitude of aural pleasures of its own to bestow upon the willing listener.
Something for everyone.......2004-07-16
This was Mendes' first album with Brazil '77, and the album draws on a mixture of sounds from the Brasil '66 group. There's the insanely catchy title song by Jorge Ben, almost as good as Ben's "Mais Que Nada" on the first Brasil '66 album. There's some straight ahead Brazilian jazz on "Zanzibar" with a sensational piano solo by Mendes, reminiscent of several tunes on the "Fool on the Hill" album. The excellent "Tonga" has the clean stripped down sound of "Equinox" and "Herb Alpert Presents." "After Midnight" is a slight song, but this is an exciting big band version of the Eric Clapton hit.
If you like mediocre pop songs, you'll appreciate "So Many People" and "Gone Forever" which are similar to the dross on some of the later Brasil '66 albums. They're easy on the ears but not all that interesting. If you're Sergio Mendes' mom, you might appreciate "I Know You" on which Mendes takes a solo turn, though the rest of us probably won't. As an interesting bonus, you get "Pais Tropical" in Japanese - this is a Japanese reissue after all. So that's three languages on one album.
This was the group's first album without Lani Hall, but the two lead singers are still wonderful. Highly recommended for Brasil '66 fans; but this shouldn't be your first Mendes album.

One word: Over-modulated.
Whoever recorded and mixed this CD did so at far too loud a volume and the result is a distorted and amateurish recording. If you love Tamba 4's We and the Sea and Samba Blim, then avoid this disappointing recording. If you're not familiar with those two, you've missed out ongreat Brazilian jazz of the late '60s that ranks with Jobim and Gilberto.
not their finest but until A&M wakes up, all you'll find.......1998-06-13
Tamba 4, the late 60s outgrowth of the bossa-nova era session musician originated Tamba Trio, in what appears to be an undated recent recording. Some tunes appear to be complete, while others seem oddly minimal and almost demo quality. Still, the roots of this group are long and strong and the quality of their performance is excellent.
