5 out of 5 stars Makes you want to dance.......2007-05-31

I bought this CD to enhance my learning of the Spanish language. Rosario has a great voice and this is by far the best CD of hers to date. Every song makes you want to run away to Spain or at least to dance the night away.

5 out of 5 stars Rosario - Contigo Me Voy.......2007-01-31

Awesome! If you like Latin music, you will love Rosario. Every song is good.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music.......2007-01-11

I love Rosario. This is one of her best cd's. The lyrics were especially romantic.

5 out of 5 stars Does Not Disappoint.......2006-09-14

As a constant latin pop music afficionado, I discovered Rosario sometime in the mid nineties and I didn't think much of her until I heard her 2001 release MUCHAS FLORES, a precious jewel of flamenco/pop music if there was ever one. She's gotten into this consistent groove ever since with 2003's DE MIL COLORES, which was almost equally impressive and in a very similar vein. With this new release, she is definitely treading new waters. All the songs are really beautiful and very mature. It doesn't even deserve comparisons to her old work since here she's definitely working on another level here. There are less rumbas in favor to more introspective downtempo songs and some really beautiful guitar work that fuse pop, rock, flamenco, and bossa nova, genres that she has explored before. If you miss the classic sounding rumbas ala Muchas Flores, Los Tangos De Mi Abuela, and La Casa En El Aire, you will be delighted with track # 9, a festive explosion entitled La Rumba Del Bongo. My favorite is the precious bossa infused closer, Mi Amor Por Ti. Does not disappoint. I wish this was the kind of music that was dominating the U.S. Latin charts.

5 out of 5 stars Simply fantastic........2006-06-23

I like very much Rosario's music because even tought is very cheerful also has some good ballads and her voice is very mellow. Her style is a mix of pop, flamenco, rock and rumba.
Rosario is very talented and has many hits including "ESTOY AQUI", "QUE BONITO", "COMO QUIRES QUE TE QUIERA", "AGUANTA AHI" among others. Both of her latest cd's won a Latin Grammy Award and her live performances are simply flawless. This must come from her roots. Her mother was Lola Flores one of the biggest artists that Spain ever had.
On this production she cames with 11 songs that from my point of view the highlights are: on the rhythm ones are "EL BESO (CONTIGO ME VOY)", "MIENTRAS ME QUEDE CORAZON" and "CAYETANO" (which reminds me a bit to her song "LOS TANGOS DE MI ABUELA") and along the ballads are "MI AMOR POR TI", "EL NIÑO DE TUS OJOS" and "PARECE QUE FUE AYER".
When I bought this album I knew that I was going to like it but as usual when we buy a cd from a singer that we like, we don't like it very much until we get used to it, but on this case as soon as I played it for the first time I liked it.
You won't feel sorry with this one if you like Rosario and if you don't know much about her, listen the samples.
Finally I would also recommend her cd's "MUCHAS FLORES" (2001) and "DE MIL COLORES" (2003).

1 out of 5 stars suprising content.......2007-02-07

Cura is wonderful but the style on this recording was not at all to my taste, my husband's taste or to a hispanic family's taste who know more about the "bolero" style than we do. Unfortunately, we all hated it. It is a sort of a slow, slighly jazzy drawl of music that never grabbed any of us.

5 out of 5 stars Totally Smitten (Hook, Line and Sinker!!!).......2003-07-05

I first heard Mr. Cura on a duet with Sarah Brightman (There For Me), and I said I have to have an album of this 'muy macho' guy. I'm not really a fan of opera music so I chose "Boleros" and can't help but swoon over this total stand-out of a guy. And his being so handsome is an added bonus. This album is a must-have for all hopeless romantics.

But After Discovering Luis Miguel & Alejandro Fernandez I Fell In Love With These Songs, Based On That Love I Purchased This Cd And Have Become An Instant Fan Of Jose Cura!!! His Voice Is Glorious & He Sings These Songs With Such Passion & Tenderness That He Takes You Beyond This Earth And A Little Closer To BLISS!!! Please Buy This And Add Some Romance To Your Life!!!!

4 out of 5 stars unusual but lovely venture.......2002-12-12

Folks, let me offer a word of piece. Jose Cura the tenor and Jose Cura the pop singer are like two different personalities. Yes, to those of us who heard him live in opera (and haven't heard his "Anhelo" CD) this comes as a surprise. After all, not a single high C (or B for that matter) makes a presence, and majority of the selections are sung in near-whisper manner. It's decidedly un-operatic.
But it's an interesting and lovely album of songs arranged in a soft jazz-like way, and Cura invests a lot of feeling into each of these. I listened to the album about 3 times before coming to appreciate it. Do likewise and you'll descover a totally new side to this remarkable artist.

5 out of 5 stars Everyone's a critic.......2002-08-26

...

As for this CD, there is nothing to say other than FABULOUS!!!
By and far one of the best CD's I own and a most brilliant example of Mr. Curas' vocal and interprative talents.
While he does sound more baritonal than anything else, it is exactly that which sets this CD apart form any of Domingos' "pop" efforts....or any CD of contemporary nature by other Tenors i.e. Boccelli etc.
Granted, Mr. Cura avoids most high notes (the highest sung on any song is an A natural), but given the song selections and that this is a vocal Jazz CD, there really is no room nor need for any excessive Tenoral vocalizing.
If you like Jazz and want to hear a world class Tenor sing it, purchase this CD.
Unless you belong to the "If it's not Pavarotti, it's no good.." crowd, you're promised to enjoy this most recent effort by Mr. Cura immensely.

Before their expulsion in 1492, the Jews of medieval Spain developed a rich and lively culture, including an exquisite repertory of songs called romanceros--and they kept that repertory alive as they settled in places as diverse as Morocco, Bosnia, Turkey, and Bulgaria. Lovely as the romanceros are, they would have languished as the objects of ethnomusicological studies and might have disappeared altogether, were it not for the efforts of gifted musicians like Hespèrion XX. Jordi Savall and his ensemble, fronted by the unique soprano Montserrat Figueras, just about single-handedly brought those songs to the attention of the modern public with this 1976 recording (now reissued at a bargain price). Disc 1 features a selection of secular music from "Christian" Spain--that is, the courts of Ferdinand and Isabella and the Catholic nobility. The music is elegant and occasionally austere, but Figueras, Savall, and colleagues give the livelier pieces a flavorful swing. Yet disc 2, which features the Sephardic songs, is the real drawing card here. It was in Moorish Spain that Jewish culture flourished, so Hespèrion XX performs the romanceros with Arabic instruments, such as the 'ud (the ancestor of the European lute) and hand drums. These musicians, rechristened Hespèrion XXI in honor of the new century, perform this repertory with more polish now than they did in 1976, but--just as A Feather on the Breath of God did for Hildegard von Bingen--this recording made its own little bit of musical history. --Matthew Westphal

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Like a religious experience.......2007-03-28

This disc is pure magic that transends and defies definition. It is time period music that has been rereleased to capture the magic of the original recording. Each song is amazing. The music creates a mood that is best enjoyed alone ,in private so that your thoughts can be elevated to the point of inspiration. Although I like both discs I prefer the one that features Sephardic Romances over the disc that is Court Music and Songs. Montserrat Figueras angelic voice lends itself to beautiful interpretations of these beautiful songs from the Age before the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492. This ancient music is preserved and freshly interpreted under the masterful leadership of Jordi Savall for an authentic recreation. If you have never heard Hesperion XX check this one out, it is fantastic. Recommended for classical music fans who want to hear something different. Once you hear Montserrat Figuerras voice you will feel the inspiration and be hooked on her angelic voice.

3 out of 5 stars Dissappointing soprano.......2006-02-22

I was excitet buying this CD, expecting the quality of songs equal or better than
Begona Olavide and Carlos Paniagua on MA recodings. The music was fine but singing by soprano Montserrat Figueras was borderline annoying.

5 out of 5 stars A balm for any soul.......2001-01-02

Attempting to review a Savall/Figueras CD is a frustrating task. The arsenal of superlatives is so quickly depleted. Terms like 'matchless' and 'unique' might be used, but lack strict definition. After all, a 'matchless' voice needn't be a good one. Terms like 'divine' or 'angelic' tend to remove Montserrat's singing from the real and human. She's nothing if not human. Having been blessed with watching as well as hearing her perform, vouching for her vitality on a stage is easy. But the superior quality of her voice and presentation is so far above the mundane or common as to become nearly indescribable. Anything less than adulation for her seems to indicate shortcomings in the disk or performer. Neither performance nor disk quality falls short here. That she performs religious songs here simply adds to the power of her impact on the listener. You necessarily hesitate, cease other activity, and, if moved enough, drop to your knees in respect and admiration. Tough to do in a crowded concert hall, but the motivation is there. And this from someone who shunned listening to vocal performances for many years. Dame Kiri was one exception and Argenta another, but the discovery of Figueras was the discovery of a voice without flaw.

Anyone visiting this page must certainly know of Jordi Savall and Hesperion XX. You may, however, have missed the glory of Montserrat Figueras' voice. Make up for that lack right away. The selections available here are pitifully limited, but this CD is as good an introduction as any. Don't hesitate to sit and enjoy this music. The sounds received will be a reward to whatever spiritual sense you possess.

5 out of 5 stars Ten stars if possible..........2000-01-27

I agree completely with Stephan: outstanding performance. Montserrat at her best. If "Si d'amor pena sentis" doesn't bring tears to your eyes, what does?

3 out of 5 stars Historical re-release.......1999-07-20

Hesperion XX were pioneers in reviving this music, and collectors will value these recordings which first came out in 1976. However most listeners may prefer more recent recordings by Wimmer on Naxos, and Alia Musica on Harmonia Mundi which have digital sound and include Spanish, and occasionally Hebrew, texts and translations.

Just when you think you know somebody, some uncharacteristic behavior shows itself and you instantly realize that you have more to learn. Such an enlightening occurrence is bound to happen for listeners to this disc accustomed to hearing the "memorable tunes, regular phrasing, and clear harmony" of Machaut's most commonly performed works. Here, the four-member Orlando Consort--alto, two tenors, and baritone--happily and with masterful ease introduce us to the "other" Machaut, one of irregular phrases, lively syncopated rhythms, and long flowing melodies that interact contrapuntally with two or three other vocal lines. The melodic structure often consists of cleverly intertwined strings of suspensions followed by quick resolutions, giving a jumpy impetus to many lengthy passages and entire songs. Among these 14 secular songs are many beautiful poetic texts and some notable melodies, but, interestingly, Machaut didn't attempt to fit music with textual meaning. For us, it remains just to listen--and perhaps to read the words separately--and we are rewarded with some of the 14th century's most sensuous, intriguing, and exotic music. --David Vernier

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Interesting music, great singing.......1999-12-20

The music on this CD represents the style of composition prevalent in the mid-14th century, the so called ars nova. This style was notable for "hocketing" (i.e. oscillation between short notes and short rests in the upper voices), and even syncopation, but it also included a technique quite different from the ones just mentioned - the so called isorhythm (i.e. regularly repeating rhythmic and harmonic structures). Machaut was a great master of both of these facets of ars nova, but he was by no means the only one, as was demonstrated by a recent Clerks' recording of music from the Ivrea Codex (and if you ask me, the greatest master of isorhythm was John Dunstable). As the in-house reviewer mentions, the music on this disc is more idiosyncratic, less regular, more syncopated than the typical 14-th century musical output. Breaking the rules while perfecting the style has always been a sign of genius, in any age. The Orlando Consort give this music the recording it deserves (I must commend this group for carving out a niche for themselves despite the fact that the idea of having an all-male quartet sing early music so smacks of the Hilliard that it would seem to be a difficult act to follow). The voices blend exquisitely, combining the beauty of tone with an expert technique - even Robert Jones, whose voice I normally find rather harsh, sounds relatively mellow and seductive in this recording. Charles Daniels is great, as always: his solo piece, Liement me deport, is utterly delightful. gkolomietz@yahoo.com

5 out of 5 stars Superb Early Music. Buy It........2005-12-13

'The Art of Courtly Love' is a two CD set, condensed from a three LP album performed by The Early Music Consort of London. I know less than I would like about early music, considering how much I enjoy it, but one very important thing I do know is that the director of this recording, David Munrow was, until his untimely death, the big man in early music.

One of the many things I especially like about this collection is that by showcasing a lot of vocal music, the tinny quality of a lot of early music is moved to the background. Antother thing I like is the fact that one can plainly distinguish secular from liturgical music by listening carefully to these selections. The biggest differences I see are the appearance of percussion instruments and male / female duets.

One reviewer commented on the quality of the notes. I agree they are good, but only about average for an old music offering by a major label.

Highly recommended to all who like early music.

5 out of 5 stars A Fiver from one of the Archangels of early music performance.......2005-06-26

I bought this when the album was first released. Even though scholarship has advanced, and it can be argued that Munrow's interpretations are dated, what has been lost over the years is the joy in performing this music. Many modern performances are ponderous and much, much too serious. But David Munrow found this music as a wonderous discovery. Through albums such as this one, he released into the open air music that had been locked away, languishing in the libraries for years, trotted out occasionally for a scholarly study, and then tucked back on the shelves. Munrow's enthusiasm for this music is evident in this collection, and his performances make them walk - no, dance - in the open air once more. This album is beautifully performed. I hope the notes in the CD are as good as the ones in my original release.

In 1974, I had the great pleasure of meeting David Munrow and the other members of the Early Music Consort, and was blown away with that enthusiasm and unselfishness, their willingness to discuss their work - I remember Munrow trading recorder performance tips with a friend of mine - and Munrow's truly amazing store of energy. He radiated! : -)

5 out of 5 stars Outdated but Still Rivetingly Interesting.......2005-05-01

This 2-CD boxed set is the digital version of a 3-LP box from 1973 and was reissued in 1996 as part of the edition with which EMI/Virgin celebrated the twentieth anniversary of David Munrow’s unfortunate demise. The recordings, made at London’s prestigious Abbey Road studios, are digitally remastered to a very high standard, so that I found myself enjoying them via headphones more than via loudspeakers, something which is pretty unusual with CDs from the old analogue days. The two discs contains no less than some 156 minutes (51 tracks) of absolutely fascinating music. The first part is devoted to Guillaume Machault’s songs, works which can be dated around 1350 to 1360. The second part of the programme is concerned with the so-called avantgarde from Avignon (including names such as Matteo da Perugia), composers who wrote for esoteric circles around 1380 to 1410. And the third part (the third LP of the original) is devoted to fifteenth-century music from the court of Burgundy, the two great composers here being Dufay and Binchois.

Of course, David Munrow’s performances, fascinating and rivetingly interesting as they are, were shaped by his own interests and research at the time, and the booklet notes point out that since then “scholarship and performance practices have moved on healthily”, which I interpret to mean that today nobody would dream of performing this music the way Munrow did: for instance, he has most of the songs accompanied by a whole plethora of ancient instruments, although today it is generally agreed that works from this period should be sung unaccompanied or with minimal instrumental support. Munrow also performs some of the songs as purely instrumental pieces, a legitimate decision perhaps. Munrow also uses the two countertenors James Bowman and Charles Brett for many of the songs, and not everyone will appreciate being bombarded with their somewhat forced androgynous falsetto for nearly three hours; personally, it was the singing of Martyn Hill, tenor, and Geoffrey Shaw, baritone, which delighted my ear during these sessions. Along with the instruments, of course: slide trumpet, cornett, shawm, crwth, fiddle, rebec, citole and so on, plus several tracks with the amazing Christopher Hogwood playing an organ that sounds, at least, very old – unfortunately, the otherwise good liner notes give no details concerning the instruments used.

The Old French texts are printed in full with English translations, so it is possible to follow every nuance. Exceptionally good value for money! – For more historically-informed performances of music of this kind, I suggest searching names such as Gothic Voices, Hilliard Ensemble or Binchois Consort.

5 out of 5 stars If 6 were available, this would get them!.......2002-02-16

Lovely, beautiful, amazing, charming, and vital. I'll not replicate the previous reviewer, though my favorites differ from his, but I bought this on LP 25 years ago and it changed my life. These are exhilarating performances, that move you effortlessly through time and space into a world both far away and very, very close. So much great music, wonderfully performed. Take a chance--it might change your life as well!

5 out of 5 stars One of the finest early music performances ever recorded.......2001-09-03

And an intriguing work of scholarship besides. This was originally released back in the early 1970's by the late David Munrow as a three album box set.

The first part of this recording is basically dedicated to Machaut and his contemporaries. The chanson -Amours me fait desirer- remains striking to this day, with its unusual leap in its first measures. -Amis tout dous- is a lovely miniature, and so also is the monophonic -Quant je sui mis au retour-. But the high point of this part of the record is -Quant j'ay l'espart-, a duet between countertenor and bass cornetto (a serpent?), understated and heartbreaking.

The second part is weirdness from the Avignon court of the Popes, the time when rhythmic notation got more sophisticated, and composers grew more experimental. The unusual chromaticism of -Fumeux fume- is given a great performance here. The -Tre fontane- estampie is given a reading here that is truly frenzied. -Plasanche, ou tost- is a lovely song. You also get rhythmic oddities like -Le greygnour bien-.

The third album nears Renaissance music, and focuses on Dufay and Binchois. Loud instruments like sackbuts and shawms are featured on pieces like -Donnes l'assault-, which seems risky, but sometimes works. The usually quiet pieces on the -La Spagna- ground are here given a marching-band performance on loud winds. The real high points here, though, are the motet -O tres piteulx-, Binchois absolutely gorgeous -Amoureux suy-, and the setting of Petrarch's -Vergine bella-.

This is a definitive early music performance that should never be allowed to go out of print. My only complaint with the CD edition is that it lacks some of the more extensive notes that came with the phonograph record booklet.

5 out of 5 stars A superb dish matched by a perfect wine.......2001-05-17

When selecting albums of flamenco singing, it is always important to see who are the singer's accompanists. The same as an "haute cuisine" meal accompanied by an inappropriate wine, a great singer can be diminished by an ill-suited guitarist or lack-luster percussionists.

This album has a wonderful pairing: The powerful, brandy-laced voice of Remedios Amaya, gypsy "por los cuatro lados" but with the modern touch of her generation, paired with the incomparable stylings of Vicente Amigo. Remedios has one of those voices and styles which can grab you in the guts (and elsewhere as well), constantly reminding you of that "something" that makes flamenco what it is and separates it from all imitations.

For his part, Vicente Amigo is one of the post-Paco de Lucía/Manolo Sanlucar "new school" of guitarists who has managed to make an indelible impression with his own, unique style - and, more remarkably, consistently so. Vicente's first appearance was very auspicious: As a teenager, he appeared on a couple of cuts on Manolo Sanlucar's masterpiece, "Tauromagia," one of those "must-have" flamenco albums. Having played with both Manolo Sanlucar and Paco de Lucía definitely shows, but he has absorbed their art and made it his own. He's one of those rare guitarists, like his maestros of the generation before him, whose style is so unique that one knows who's playing after hearing only a few bars. His playing is a very rare combination of subtlety, nuance, and musical sophistication overlaid and informed by a very flamenco, earthy sensibility - like a great, fluffy Persian cat: The fur is soft and silky, but one is constantly reminded that what lies beneath are some very sharp claws and teeth.

For another excellent pairing, check out "Del Amanecer," the album with the incredible singer José Merce and, again, Vicente Amigo, who produced and composed much of the recording.

      5 out of 5 stars A DIVA - WHAT A VOICE!.......2000-08-01

It is rare that a singer can recreate a Flamenco Cante that has been sung for a century, and bring something new and delightful to it without compromising the deep feeling associated with the form. Selections 1,2,7,8, and 9 (spacious Tangos and Bulerias)are as good as anything that is being created in music today. No one can "shout" from such depths and keep it so musical! Gracias Remedios!

4 out of 5 stars Authentic Soul of Spain.......2000-06-10

This album is truly exciting. It has all the soul and essence that is Flamenco. All the passion that this dance has to offer can be heard in every song. I highly recommend it.
