This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

The excellence of maturity.......2007-07-25

I've waited a long time to review this album, because it is profound. Yes, it is immediately accessible on many levels, with Willy's typical instrumental virtuosity, sublime lyrics, and beautiful singing. But it has a much deeper level to it, too. I come away from it thinking, as other reviewers have noted, that it is different. I think the difference is primarily Willy's continuing to mature as a man and evolve as a musician. It is a wonderful addition to his canon.

Willy does it again. Once again Willy uses his amazing song writing wit and style and plays great music on another great cd. Anyone who knows Willy knows this will be a good one and if you don't, well give it a listen, you will not be disappointed. In person he is so fun and this cd is a great reflection of his in person performance. Fun and talented to the core, Willy is a great singer-songwriter.

Consistency=good songs+production........2007-01-04

Willy Porter is best experienced at one of his live performances but, as far as studio recordings go, this a beauty!! I have all of his CD releases to date, and it appears to be a cohesive "band" vibe happening here, just by the sound and production quality alone. But, don't be mistaken, the songs are as usual, first-class!! Bravo, Willy. See ya on stage.

It's Willy Again - Only Different.......2006-09-21

If you're a fan of Willy Porter - and who isn't?! - you'll recognize his abilities and soul poured into each track on this album. He's taken a slight departure from his previous releases in that there is an overall sense of melancholy and three instrumentals. The feel of the album is understood, given the loss of his father during the recording and clearly it's Willy's way of expressing his feelings of the situation, notably with "Me and MY Old Man". The last track, "Where are my keys?", is a first for Willy by going a little techno with a drum machine and synth, almost a pop/dance track. The childhood recollection "Loose Gravel" FINALLY makes an appearance on a studio album, and "Sleepy Little" recalls Willy's earlier work with a style reminiscent of one of my first CD's, "Windham Hill Records Guitar Sampler" from the 80's. "Hairball" has a great Leo Kottke feel - the only `bad' part of that song is its less then 2 minutes. I'm sure it could easily become another long jam like "Roadbone" when he's on stage. "One More September" took me a while to realize that it's about 9/11, well after my eyes were welling up. Thanks Willy, you've done it again. See you at the next show!

From the OBJECTIVE reviewer...Shawn Mullins is underrated, but nevertheless this is not his best performance. He sounds good with an acoustic guitar and his storytelling songs, but after a while it just starts putting you to sleep.

Put simply, this is probably my all-time favorite album. If you like looking at how Shawn Mullins sounds without all the "produced" new stuff, then get this album. The stripped-down version of "Shimmer" is worth the price alone. Truly one of our best modern-day poets/storytellers.

Instead of writing a typical review of this album, I will provide you with five good reasons as to why you should purchase this album:

1. On this album, Shawn uses his deep voice and perfectly matched melodies to create a mood and a sound that resonate long after the album in finsihed playing.

2. The lyrics are shatteringly true. This album will relate to those who have had to make difficult choices in life, to those who have fallen in love, to those who have had their hearts broken, to those who are confused with what life has to offer, and to those who feel like they are a lost soul.

3. With each song, the listener becomes more engaged with the lyrical journey. Whether you have heard all of his music or heard none of his music, you will connect with the songs on this album - it IS that good.

4. Track # 12: Shimmer. To those who are fans of Shawn's music already, this version of the song is the reason to run out and buy the album. He plays the song with more heart, and he is more exposed. While he plays this song as it should be played - Shawn, his voice, and his guitar - the listener feels as though they are in the room with him as he is recording the song.

5. When in the right mood, this album and these songs will hit all of the right "notes." Once again, he touches on emotions and feelings that we all feel as though we have felt; he exposes his life with honesty, and he creates a listening experience that is like no other.

Wow!.......2001-01-13

I went to the store to get Soul's Core back in December of... 97, I guess. They had several Shawn Mullins CDs, and Eggshells was the cheapest, so I got it, as well. Wow!! I have loved this album ever since. It's just... incredible. You can *feel* the music, hear everything he's thinking and feeling in his voice. My favorite are "Two Choices (My Ship)", "Joshua" (I'm writing a play based on this song, actually), "Cycle of Our Souls", "Eggshells" (my when-I'm-deppressed theme song) and "Salt Lake City 1973". The accoustic version of "Shimmer" is excellent, as well, and if you like it you should check out Jeff's Last Dance Vol. I, an album you can purchase from Shawn's independent record label's site. Anyway, if you like bluesy, folky, jazzy accoustic rock, then BUY THIS CD!!! You won't regret it.

Depression and anxiety? Marc Maron seethes it. He revels in it.

Marc Maron's material is incredibly well put together and delivered adroitly, but his true skill is making his bits come across as the maniacal ravings of a man on the edge. When he seems to be losing his train of thought, it always carefully circles back to strike you in the ass.

He has a certain shamelessness when it comes to making people uncomfortable. There's no apology, you either get the joke or you don't. This certainly seems to be a trend for comedians today, to be "edgy," but Marc Maron has honed it over the years of a career on the edge of mainstream success. Somehow, he's managed to avoid that. He's been just successful enough to maintain some integrity and callous bitterness that is lost once a comedian gets their watered-down television sitcom.

There are a few parts of this album where I was afraid Marc Maron was turning to standard comedic fare, like talking about marriage or turning into his dad. Thankfully, even these bits do an about face, or an about self-efface, and take a miserable turn to hilarity through tragedy.

The best thing about Marc Maron is in his willingness to explore unfunny bits. By no means am I implying things get serious; in fact, they get hilarious. Misery loves company, though, especially when the company can point out some of the tragic absurdity that you might have missed.

Kindred spirits from different countries, Canada's Rick Danko, Norway's Jonas Fjeld, and America's Eric Andersen connect across all sorts of borders on these 1991 recordings. The reedy-voiced Andersen shares Scandinavian roots with Fjeld (introduced as "a Norwegian national treasure") and New York and Bob Dylan connections with former Band member Danko, and all three steep their material in the American mythos. On the studio sessions, the harmonies are richer than some of the song craft, with Danko's vocals at their soulful best on "Driftin' Away" and Andersen's "Blue River." The live performance elicits an enthusiastic reception from the festival fans, with each of the three artists showcased solo before joining forces. Listening to Andersen's revival of "Hey Babe, Have You Been Cheatin'" conjures 1960s-era Greenwich Village, where he was one of the first to survive the "new Dylan" tag. A Great Trio - CSN could learn a lesson here.......2002-07-24

Taking the last spot in the lineup, nonetheless, Eric Anderson is the architect and musical center for what was one of the truly great trios in modern song in the 90's. This team came about as a result of Eric's move to Norway. He has released several stellar solo recordings based in Norway that are well worth seeking out, and in the course of this endeavour, he began working with Jonas Fjeld. I'm not sure how Rick Danko and the two of them hooked up, but their debut concert in Norway is presented here as a bonus secxond disc to a marvellous recapitulation of their studio work.

This trio is the perfect antedote to the birdchirpy, often off key (especially in concert) harmonics of CSN. What you have are 3 men who can find the notes, expand upon them, provoke interesting twists on the harmonies, and introduce their personal idiosyncrasies in a magnificent tapestry. Pull Crosby out of the other trio, and you have a sheer mess.

The studio songs are extremely well executed, beautifully orchestrated. In concert, Danko flubs a bit of "It makes no difference" but flubs with enormous passion. It is an arresting example of how getting it wrong gets it totally right. Fjeld is the surprise in both the studio and in concert. He is both American raconteur and Scandanavian mystic. His tones are all Norse inflected, and his baritone delivery has a worn in quality that makes him seem part of your interior's history. That brings us to Anderson, perhaps the most underappreciated writer ever to have emerged from the same scene that spit out Dylan and Baez and Paxton and loads of other very essential writers. He writes from the heart, and his songs can leave you devastated, exhilarated, reflective, and so much more. He is a brilliant musician. Well, they all are, and the backup bands in both contexts are superlative.

Go out on a limb, here, if you are unfamiliar with these men. This was a great band that you should listen to, and with Danko's unfortunate passing, a final testament to one of Canada's greatest musicians, one of popular song's greatest interpreters.

Nice old-fashioned roots music.......2002-06-25

An expanded, 2-CD reissue of an unusual and unlikely collaboration between former Band member Rick Danko, Scandinavian roots rocker Jonas Fjeld and Greenwich Village singer-songwriter Eric Andersen. This is a pleasantly diverse outing, ranging from quieter, folkie numbers to electric jam-band tunes. The new version also includes a second disc of live concert recordings that may include a few pleasant surprises. Accomplished, confident rootsy material by an interesting trio of hippie-era old-timers.

A good rerelease of an early Rz document.......2007-05-04

This is a good, clean version of this early Rz historical document. The original legend went that this was originally recorded under a philosophy of Obscurity, a kind of purist artistic vision that demanded art for art's sake, which included the creation of art that would never be released to the public. Various stories of the actual reason for release came through, from business needs to not wanting to reveal some personal in-fighting, but released it got, and this EuroRalph digipak release is a very listenable one. I used to have a release that included some bonus tracks from the amazing Rz - Renaldo and the Loaf collaboration, which I am thankful for because it gave me good reason to seek out _Title in Limbo_, but _Not Available_ itself was rather poorly put to disc and after a while became unlistenable. This release is a lot more listenable and clean in sound and includes some more info about the in-fighting legend and even some info about the performance aspect that was behind this recording. While this isn't the best the Rz has to offer, I've always been fond of "Ship's A'Going Down" as well as some of the other tracks within these tracks that never quite go named, though they should. This is also a good segue away from the plodding _Meet the Residents_ into their more synthesized and electronic work, which is where their art really started to take off. Well worth getting, if you're looking to make the effort.

Happy Nephew.......2006-08-21

I bought this for my nephew and he doesn't find Too scary, more fun. Katherine Dines, using great impressions, tells a short narrative, often based on folklore from around the world, then sings a related song. The text is included with the CD so sometimes I call him before bedtime and read/sign to him. His favorite is Dark, Dark Night and mine is Mister Jones' Bones.

Wonderful, fun music for babies and toddlers.......2006-06-02

I strongly recommend this CD to anyone with youngsters. Her voice is calming and mellow and the lyrics are easy with which to sing along.
My two year old son loves SOO Big and and SOO Small; he stretches high then low when it it on. Also, Three Nice Mice is so much nicer to sing than Three Blind Mice (those words are pretty creepy if you think about it). My ten month old also enjoys the CD; I give both of them spoons to play during Musical Spoons. Dad on Diaper Duty is a fun, cute song and I sing to my husband when it's his turn to change her.
