1 out of 5 stars Simply horrid.......2006-02-11

If you're any fan of Georgie Fame, avoid this at any cost. Yes, there are a lot of tracks, and yes, all the charting hits are here, but that's about all the nice thing I can say about it. Sound quality is all over the map, continuing Raven's propensity towards pulling the easiest-to-find master and using it instead of doing their homework. Things are mono that should be stereo, and things that should be mono are in abominable rechanneled (i.e. phony) stereo. Fame deserves better than this. Save your money and find a copy of "20 Beat Classics" plus any of the UK CBS collections still floating around.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Comprehensive Fame Collection Available!.......2005-04-28

I had heard of Georgie Fame as a teenage Beatles fan back in the early 1980s, but hadn't heard him until a friend put Georgie's version of "Work Song" on a compilation disc for me almost 20 years later. The energy in that one recording made me feel as if I had in some small way experienced the fabled early 60s British R&B/Jazz scene that spawned The Yardbirds, the Rolling Stones, Alexis Korner, Georgie Fame, and others. After that, I acquired more Georgie Fame's 60s recordings, including the spectacular pop nugget "Yeh Yeh." This compilation provides a fantastic sampling of, arguably, Fame's most seminal recordings, and is worth the price of admission for the 2 tracks I mentioned earlier. This is 60s British R&B/Jazz-influenced pop at its finest. My only wish now is that someone will eventually have the good sense to reissue Georgie Fame & the Blue Flames' "Rhythm & Blues at the Flamingo" on CD.

5 out of 5 stars True "Blue Eyed Soul" and Jazz, and R&B, and POP,.............2004-11-10

Georgie does it all! And it's all here! This is the most comprehensive collection of Georgie Fame's great music available today. This CD spans his years with EMI and CBS (Epic and Imperial in the states). All of the hits are here as well as some fantastic live jazz and R&B cuts. His horn section really stands out on this CD and are comparable to the best. His extensive use of baritone sax (an istrument that seems to have all but disappeared today) is remarkable in itself. It, along with the bass trombone adds balls to any horn section as evidenced on this cd. Georgie Fame only had 2 or 3 songs chart in the USA, but if any American jazz or R&B fans happen to read this review; do yourself a favour and get this cd. You'll love it! Jerry Grigsby

5 out of 5 stars Great sixties mix of pop, blues and jazz.......2004-09-27

Georgie Fame's musical roots were in jazz and blues and that was what really interested him. Fortunately for him, there was room in the sixties pop charts for such musicians, especially if they were prepared to adapt their music to appeal to pop audiences. So it was that Georgie Fame topped the UK charts three times and several other hits. By some statistical freak, none of his hits made the top ten except for the three that made number one.

The three UK number ones were Yeh yeh (his first hit, though not his first single), Get away (which he originally wrote for a TV commercial) and The ballad of Bonnie and Clyde, which was about the film. These are the songs that Georgie is best remembered for but some of his other pop hits are also noteworthy, among them being Sunny, Sitting in the park, Because I love you, Peaceful and Rosetta, the last-named featuring Alan Price.

As the hits dried up, Georgie returned to the jazz and blues music that he loved but as this collection shows, that music was always an important influence in his pop hits. This is as good a collection of his music from his hit-making years as you are likely to find, containing all his UK hits and several other interesting tracks.

    Album Description

"Without the killer grooves and syncopated horn blasts of the always wonderful Skatalites, life on this planet would be a far duller thing." -- L.A. Daily News "The Skatalites are Jamaica's answer to the Motown house band and Booker T. & The MG's combined." -- Rolling Stone "The Skatalites took influences from jazz, calypso and US rhythm `n' blues to help create the sound that dominated Jamaican sixties music ... This is a must have album for anyone interested in Jamaican music and a great introduction for those who wish to learn." -- BBC.co.uk "More than a band, The Skatalites were and are an institution, an aggregation of top-notch musicians who didn't merely define the sound of Jamaica, they were the sound of Jamaica across the '50s and '60s." -- All Music Guide "The second wave of ska produced some good bands and some great music, the third wave fewer, but if you want to really hear the music played with respect for its deepest roots, you need to go to the source, and that is undoubtedly The Skatalites ... The band is more musically sophisticated than many of its contemporaries were and than pretty much all of its present day imitators are." -- PopMatters

Recorded in Byron Bay in 2006, On the Right Track mixes the coastal island vibes of Australia's and Jamaica's hippest towns with a heavy jazz influence. Among a myriad of reissues and compilations, this album stands out as having the best new original material on an international Skatalites release since 1964. Studio sessions were held in the style of a classic jazz session, much like the "one-take" upbringing Studio 1 provided the group in the early days. From the late '50s into the '60s, The Skatalites transcended popular music, introducing and defining Jamaican music and culture to the world. Combining the best of American boogie-woogie with R&B, jazz, and big band swing, The Skatalites created the up-tempo syncopated island beat dubbed "ska," which evolved into rocksteady and reggae. The original backing band for Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, and Toots & The Maytals, these two-time Grammy nominees have toured extensively worldwide since the '80s.

    2 out of 5 stars Not really..........2007-07-11

This has the feel of the classic Sly Stone albums, but lacking in their liveliness, with a couple gimmicks thrown in simply to modernize the sound (buzzing keyboards on "Shine it On"; talkbox on "The Same Thing (Makes You Laugh, Makes You Cry)"; electric piano and disco rhythms on "Who's to Say?"). It's sad to see Sly reduced to this: he even takes some of his old ideas and dresses them up in new packaging ("Sing a Simple Song" + "Everyday People" = "It Takes All Kinds"). Of course, Sly was gone at this point, little more than a drug-addled recluse, struggling against the tide, trying and failing to reclaim the glory of his '60s material. It's laid-back, lazy funk: most of it is in the same tempo, every song sort of bleeds into each other, but not like the songs on There's a Riot Goin' On did. Kudos to the bassist: he does overuse slap a bit (obviously a Larry Graham imitator), but he holds down a solid groove: a couple of the songs are decent as far as imitation classic Sly goes ("Sheer Energy", with a harmonica; "Remember Who You Are"), and the album's very listenable, even if most of the songs are bad.
And I'm not anti-Sly by any means, no matter what this two-star review may imply: Life, Stand!, There's a Riot Goin' On and Fresh are all solid records. Far better than this, too.

4 out of 5 stars Sly's last really good record - almost up there with Fresh.......2002-07-01

I'm a nearly religious devotee of Sly, but certainly not blinded by the light. While his late 60's stuff was raw and funky and his early-mid 70s stuff (most notably Fresh and Small Talk) were the absolute pinnacle of positive funk, most of his later efforts reek of chronic burnout and disco sellout.

Not so the aptly titled Back on the Right Track, which is a rare gem in his late career. While it's not quite as funky, creative or soul-stirring as Fresh-era Sly, it's a solid record full of short and simple but really tasty grooves... and for those of you who tune into Sly's higher frequencies, he feels more spiritually present on this record than he did on most of his mid-to-late 70's recordings, back in the positive groove that made us love him. The highs on this record aren't his highest, but it's consistently cool and there isn't a lame moment on the record.

My Sly favorites: Fresh and Small Talk, and immediately after those i would rank Anthology ('cause it has most of the best of Sly's earliest stuff), High On You and this disc, in no particular order. If you dig Sly at all and the sample tracks don't turn you off, you'll probably be very happy with Back on the Right Track. If you're new to Sly, then buy Fresh, Small Talk and (if you're down with 60's soul) Anthology first.

4 out of 5 stars The Best Of The Later Period.......2002-05-28

After comparing this album with Sly's other albums (post Fresh) I have to say that this is easily the best. Recorded in 1978/79 you'd be forgiven for thinking that his mid 70's stuff would be better, but unusually this is not the case.
To me (and many others) it seems that Sly's ego and his paranoid delusions of granduer and omnipotence got the better of him after 1970.
Part of the problem was that 'The Family Stone' had left him in '73 and any creative input and boundaries that they may have been able to put in place were overtaken by more than a modicum of self indulgence and obstinance.
This lack of focus meant that Sly spent most of his time with his head in the clouds after the number 1 single 'Thankyou Falletin Me Be Mice Elf Again'(1970).
On this album though Sly captures some of his earlier form. It is also not ruined by the 'diaphonous' master tapes that would be re-recorded over many times, for numerous and often unsavoury reasons. (think of the album There's A Riot Going On)
With members of the original band back on board and with some kind of monetary focus the awful sound quality that is present on There's A Riot has been completely eliminated.
There are certainly more than 2 good tracks here. I'd wager that ALL the tracks here are above Sly's 'own' average.
My only gripe is that many of the songs are under 3 mins and the album clocks in at less than 30 mins in it's entirity.
I think that this was a ploy by either the record company, the band, or Sly himself to try and condense the studio work into some kind of chart success. This, unfortunately was not to be and the album was a failure of sorts. Whilst it didn't perform in the charts it is certainly worth reconsidering if you are looking for something to compliment the 'Greatest Hits' packages.
Regardless, this is the only album really worth hunting out after 'Fresh', or possibly 'High On You' and as such, in many ways, marks the end of a distinguished career of a flawed genius.

What a shame though that the sound quality and coherence of the music on here is so absent from the releases that should have marked his glory days, after 1970. Sly only has himself to blame though.

        Album Description

Joseph "Zigaboo" Modeliste, King of the Funky Drums (KOTFD), is pleased to present the release of his new CD, "I'M ON THE RIGHT TRACK" -- written, produced, and published on his own label, JZM Records. "I'M ON THE RIGHT TRACK" features all-star guests, including Dr. John, Ivan Neville, Bernie Worrell, Bobby Vega, Kai Eckhardt, David Torkanowsky, Chris Rossbach, Garth Webber. Zigaboo Modeliste, the "legendary New Orleans drummer," is best known for his 20 years of work with The Meters, "New Orleans' baddest funk band" (Rolling Stone). Widely acknowledged as a band way ahead of its time, the Meters perfected the funk lock that would influence a generation of rhythm bands.Ziggy released his first solo CD in 2000, "ZIGABOO.COM," reviewed as one of the most outstanding comeback recordings of the year. This 2004 CD, "I'M ON THE RIGHT TRACK," reaches the people through Ziggy's master drumming, as well as genius producing and writing skills. He especially focused on a message to humanity through his song, "GUNS," to discourage senseless violence and unnecessary deaths involving guns or any other weapons of destruction. Another highlight of the CD is the tune, "WELCOME TO NEW ORLEANS"-- a second line groove with a back beat featuring Dr. John on the keyboards, inviting the whole world to get funky and live it up. This is New Orleans flava without a doubt. Ziggy's unsurpassed funk and pocket skills on the drums throughout the entire CD confirm as is quoted in "The Book of Rock Lists" -- that Modeliste is the most brilliant American funk percussionist of the Contemporary Era. The percussion maestro known as the "King of the Funky Drums" takes you to a funkified festive jubilation, the ultimate party of dance and groove.

God damn it's a fine album! i've seen these guys a million times and thought it strange how few of their 'standards' are on this disc, but after a listen i realized they have put together a perfectly cohesive album, fulla the kinda music that makes you realize that rock is not in fact dead, it's just a little drunk.

inexplicably home at honkytonks, chicago punk bars, and detroit soul joints, Geraldine's music has been chugging along for several years, and it keeps getting better. try listening to "B Team", Save Your Soul, or my new favorite, "Scene for the Making," and not wake up the next day dying to hear it again.

the production is necessarily lo-fi, accentuating the rawness of the music. if you think you're missing something listening to this CD, you are: you gotta git out and see this band live before Matt Harvey falls and breaks his hip. still the only band i know able to rock this consistently hard, and still work the harmonica in such a way that you're left thinking, "of course."

            4 out of 5 stars Excellent Compilation.......2005-12-28

It may seem like "local bias" because I am from the Philly metro area, but this is the best sampler compilation I've heard in quite a while. Produced by Philadelphia's WXPN-FM, one of the best adult alternative stations in the country (and home of World Cafe), it's a very tasty cross-section of local talent - the performances are first-rate across the board, ranging from straight-ahead pop-rock to soul to folk, and more. The most high-profile name here is probably Amos Lee, whose debut album has met with accolades nationwide. You may recognize other singer-songwriters here as well, like John Flynn, Ben Arnold, Jim Boggia and Grey Eye Glances. (And if you're not familiar with them, this is a great place to start.) There are also very catchy numbers from lesser-knowns like Townhall, Mutlu and Mojo Stu. Proceeds from the CD also benefit "Musicians on Call", a worthy cause in which participating musicians bring live music to hospital patients in the area. So if you like World-Cafe style musical programming, you will really enjoy this CD.
