      5 out of 5 stars Montserrat's voice casts a seductive spell,Viva Diva!!!!.......2006-04-06

Montserrat Caballe is the voice of all ages. She continues to bring joy to millions around the world. This latest recording finds caballe in lovely voice, with plenty of lush pianissimos. While I was listening to this album I felt immersed into a very spiritual atmosphere, that nearly carried me out of my body.I realised this peaceful music with caballe's ethereal singing was levitating me closer to the pearls of spanish mysticism.
I will treasure this 24 bit recording for the rest of my life!

Beautiful singing from Caballe's later years. She was in her late 60s during the recording of this beautiful little gem of spanish renaissance songs!Highly reccomended to all who love the ethereal voice of montsy and/or intrigued by early spanish music!

5 out of 5 stars 'Spirit and music, song and instrument...'.......2005-05-22

The heart of this collection of Spanish Renaissance canciones is the enduring musical presence of Montserrat Caballe, whose vivifying art spans the second half of the twentieth century like a colossus. I can think of few artists who better exemplify the humility required to consistently reveal art as an essential component of human progress. Caballe, among them all, is the complete humanist, the complete artist. Who can afford not to be grateful for these things?

She sings accompanied only by the intriguing vihuela de mano, masterfully played by Manuel Cubedo. Fittingly used for these musical gems of renaissance Spain, this stringed instrument possesses a complex intonation conformed to the human voice. The CD notes hold another gem - an essay (printed in three languages) by Cesar Rodriguez Campos, called "The Enraptured Spirit: Song and Vihuela de mano in the 16th Century", an informative addition to a compelling disc. The Spanish text of each song is also provided.

Caballe's genial musical majesty pervades every track. Those elements of her art that inform and transcend the operatic canon, are present here, refined to mystical simplicity and pleasure: the artist in her native tongue, lissome ornamentation, serious preparation and scholarship. What emerges is a portrait of the artist as carriage of the spiritual. So, this is a transforming recording. You can say this is Montserrat after opera. I think the arc of her art extends even to these delicacies. Only one whose gifts replenished the operatic art's true conformation, as being one that must rest upon the human voice alone as on an unchangable foundation, could create a recording as revealing as this one. Recommended.

2 out of 5 stars "Great" she may be, BUT ABSOLUTELY NOT in this repertory!!.......2005-05-07

I'm really not sure what this recording (or should I say this series) is getting at...

Presumably, Montserrat Caballe had either lost enthusiasm for playing endless operatic divas, felt she had lost her youthful agility and technique (resorting to "easier"[?] music), or perhaps even wanted to exhibit a sense of patriotism by showing that - yes - Spain had an equivalent to the German Lieder tradition (albeit an earlier one).

But just who is this recording aimed at...? Are seasoned Caballe fans really interested in music from 15th and 16th century Spain...? Are passionate early music listeners - familiar with this repertory from the numerous infinitely superior recordings available - really wanting to hear a fruity and unashamedly operatic interpretation of this repertoire...? Indeed the most irritating feature of this recording is the sheer arrogance with which these performances are presented. No performer, no matter how great or experienced, is appropriate for every type of music. Would Emma Kirkby be a suitable Carmen in Bizet's renowned Opera...? Would Ella Fitzgerald be appropriate for a recital of Wolf's 'Italienisches Liederbuch', or Michael Jackson for Schubert's 'Die Winterreise'...? I think not. Suffice to say that there is not a single scrap of evidence which could be called upon to justify Caballe's wobbly style in this music...

And of course, it would all perhaps be infinitely more acceptable if both she and her accompanist could at least attempt to sing and play in tune. Caballe's intonation is decidedly unreliable; indeed, she is often flat as a pancake, and in certain tracks completely off-key (try track 19 for starters). Perhaps this is partially the result of her dire accompanist, who is quite simply one of the most abysmal vihuela players I've EVER heard (and not a patch on exponents like Rolf Lislevand, Jose Miguel Moreno and Xavier Diaz-Latorre). If you're looking for a recording to shatter the myth that opera singers are better than early music singers, THIS most definitely is it. Personally, I believe she should stick to her dying diva roles. Indeed, looking at the photograph on the back of the CD (in which she wears pastiche "Elizabethan" frocks), one could believe she has just walked out of a production of Donizetti's 'Maria Stuarda' - she certainly sounds like she has...

In contrast with Hopkinson Smith's solo discs: partitas by weiss and pieces by vieux gaultier, I wasn't captured by this music on the spot, It took me to attand some vocal concerts to really appreciate this beautifull recording, you are not overcome by smith's extraordinary skill here, but sinking slowly to the renesaince era accompanied by beautifull lute and figueras beautifull voice.

1 out of 5 stars No se cantar, ni taner, mas un poco jugaria..........2005-07-31

This recording attempts to give a portrayal of Spanish music from the turn of the 16th century, drawing upon works by some of the best composers of the period - Encina, Anchieta and Milan. Unfortunately, the emphasis here lies on 'attempts'; for in truth, there is not a solitary scrap of contemporary evidence which can be called upon to justify the kaleidoscopic jamboree of instruments exploited (amongst which some are at any rate from later in the century - the violin and sopranino recorder), or indeed the quasi-Moorish (liner notes, p.9 - 'we have a really cool Turkish drum') or jovial 'flamenco-fiesta' styles adopted. [Readers interested in how this music would have been performed should consult literature by Tess Knighton, etc ]. Apparently, the aim of the recording is to demonstrate how the music might have sounded if it had travelled south - although no explanation is offered as to why (or how) Castilian court music would have been absorbed by the rustic Al-Andalus music tradition. And whereas other groups using large [and anachronistic] forces create performances of superb quality (such as the Harp Consort or Hesperion XXI), here suspect musicology is complemented with some decidedly amateurish interpretations - perhaps most obviously in the Michael Morrow/Astrurian-inspired [why??] vocals (...ya cantan los gallos???). And as if this were not enough, errors abound in orthography (tracks 1, 7) and attribution (track 9), the translation of the texts sometimes verges on the inventive (track 9 is a particular case in point - see below*), and one piece (track 15) is not even from the right period (Ribayaz's collection 'Luz y Norte' was actually published well into the Baroque period, in Madrid in 1677, a fact silently omitted from the liner notes...although admittedly, the performance bears little resemblance to Ribayaz in any case).

This is some of the most beautiful music ever written [and there are plenty of excellent recordings of it currently available]. Do it justice - leave this CD alone.

If you absolutely must hear this music in flamenco style interpretations, I recommend you try the following recording where the performances are infinitely more accomplished:

'Fiesta Espagnola' - Mercedes Hernandez, Elva La Guardia and the United Continuo Ensemble (Raum Klang RK2408)

      * La tricotea (track 16) is in fact a concoction of pseudo-Spanish/Portuguese/Italian gibberish, though no indication of this appears in the translation: non-existant words (such as 'tricotea' and 'tuleta') are merrily 'translated' into English, whilst for words with numerous possible definitions (such as 'la bota'), one translation is simply offered as gospel, even though the context does not eliminate the other possibilities.

1 out of 5 stars Completely missed the point.......2004-05-20

This has to be the most misguided interpretation of Renaissance songs I have ever heard: Modern pseudo-flamenco versions of classic court and popular songs. Juan del Encina must be rolling in his grave. Please listen to Jordi Savall (Hesperion XX) or the Huelgas Ensemble instead. I expected more from Dorian Recordings, the folks who brought us the Baltimore Consort.

      5 out of 5 stars A Stirring Rendition.......2001-12-18

Ah, at last! I have been waiting breathlessly for the Terra Nova Consort's second CD ever since I purchased the first one (Renaissance en Provence) when it first came out. And their second outing into the world of Renaissance Mediterranean music certainly does not disappoint. According to their liner notes, their aim with this album is to explore the popular music of the Northern Spanish courts as it might have sounded had it travelled into Andalucia. And so we get amazing and fiery performances of many familiar songs from the 15th and 16th c. cancioneros, as well as some traditional music that wouldn't sound out of place to the Renaissance aesthetic. Guitars strum up a storm, castanets and tambourines beat away, and the violin and recorders provide a bright commentary on the melodies--and then the vocalists grind and soar above it all, sometimes in passionate harmony, sometimes in sparkling heterophony, and sometimes in virtuosic solo display, all inspired by the traditional vocal practices of Southern Spain. I have never come across a recording of this repertoire that so fully captures the spirit and the rhythmic and emotional potential of the music.

        5 out of 5 stars I adore this cd!.......2004-07-29

A wonderful Renaissance cd, I love the fine musicianship of all the instrumentalists and I particularly admire Geraldine McGreevy's bold and audacious interpretation of these songs. One of my favorites is #24, a lyrical instrumental piece, beautifully done. I highly recommend this cd!

5 out of 5 stars A great cd at a very low price.......2003-05-13

If you enjoy spanish renaissance music, this cd is a must have. The songs vary widely from one to another: sacred and secular - vocal and instumental. The instuments used are pimarily: lute, guitar, drum, and recorder. I do not recall hearing any of the reed instuments of that era, crumcorns, etc. Buy it and enjoy.
