Carmen Rivero's Cumbias - Not for Hispanics Only.......2005-03-06

I can date my love for Latin music back to the night in 1966 when the East Texans at a dinner party my parents were hosting had drunk enough wine to dance and my father put this record on the hi-fi turntable. My parents had come of age during mambo/cha-cha dance "crazes" of the '50's, so the arrival of the cumbia must have struck a chord in their thrity-something psyches. I was seven when the distinctive clarinet section of the Rivero Conjunto woke me up. I still have the cassette of it that I took with me to college. A few years later I was working in Guayaquil, Ecuador, where cumbia is a secular religion. But when I put this tape on, the Guayaquileños would readily admit that no band was ever hotter. This should be a cornerstone of any Latin music collection.

The introduction of Cumbia into the United States.......2000-01-11

This is the recording that for the most part introduced Americans to the joy of Cumbia. CBS records distributed this recording from the early 1960's until the mid 70's. My own family "went through" three copies of this album before we retired them all as unlistenable because of the scratches on the records. Several of my many uncles and aunts had the record too. I can remember plenty of late nights when we children, later young teenagers, would watch our then young parents dancing to this record, both sides, start to finish. My Mexican-American family collected hundreds, maybe into the thousands, of records in the 60's and 70's. My brothers and I continue to do that. But this is our absolute favorite recording from our childhood. I had been looking for it on CD for 10 years or more. The CD recording is even better than the record. It is as if I were listening to a whole new recording. Everyone ought to have a copy of this historically important recording. It is the first record to play at any party. The music and the vocals are outstanding!

This is the sound of urban Colombian cumbia from the mid-60s. It is the sound that influenced the great Salvadoran cumbia orchestras as well. For dancing it can't be beat! It's nice to see this re-released on CD after so many years. If you want to hear a truly SMOOTH and HOT cumbia band this is it!

early baroque fake-book inspiringly read.......2005-10-07

This is inspired playing/interpretation of an obscure Mexican cittern(!) instruction manual on viol, cittern, chitarrone, and various percussions. It's full of familiar tunes reset -- the folias, canarios, branles, ..., and some you've never heard before. Some of the rhythms are conjectural, but the results make you want to dance. If you like Paniagua, you'll love this.

Pure smack, crackle, and pop for Latin jazz fans.......1998-10-06

With this 1993 release, Poncho Sanchez fed Latin jazz fans what they craved-more live Poncho. Actually, "Bailar" is more than a welcome sequel the 1991 classic "A Night at Kimball's East." It's a treasure chest containing more songs from the same show. Why the brass at Concord Records decided to split the concert into two CDs is a matter of speculation. Perhaps they feared offering the entire performance on one CD would prove too much of a good thing. If you liked "Kimball's East," you probably already own this one. If you've heard neither, "Bailar" is as good a place to start as any. Like its predecessor, it captures the raw enthusiasm and energy that seems to follow Sanchez from gig to gig. The album succeeds on two levels, offering crisp Latin jazz in its most natural, most powerful setting-a live stage. For those lucky enough to have experienced this colossal performance in person, it was the show of a lifetime. For the rest of us, we can be grateful for "Kimball's East" and "Bailar."
