Rest in Peace Dear Bubbles (1929-July 2, 2007).......2007-07-03
I met this singer last fall in New York. A few months later, I saw her again hosting the opera quiz at the Met. Little did I know that about five months later, she would forever rest in the peace that she deserved for so long. Rest in peace Beverly. And brava...brava for the many years of wonderful singing that you gave us.
two beautiful discs!.......2007-02-18
Good example of the "Art of Beverly Sills".......2007-01-27
The first CD focuses on her operatic singing. The CD begins with a selection from Thomas' "Mignon," culminating in "Je suis Titania la blonde." Her voice is light and clear. She displays great agility. In the middle of this piece, she shows a decent but not great trill; she closes the "cut" with a series of terrific trills. Her ornamentation is nicely done.
Donizetti's "Linda di Chamounix" was another of Sills' characters. "Ah! Tardai troppo. . .O luce di quest'anima" features more clean vocalization. The florid singing is nicely done, with well sung high notes and additional sound trills. A very agile voice on display! From Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor," Sills sings "Regnava nel silenzio. . .Quando rapito in estasi." Her voice is smooth. In the aria, she produces a set of trill after trill, each one well done, but in their totality almost overdone (I love trills, but there were almost too many!). "Quando rapito in estasi" is well sung, with much well done florid singing, with appoggiaturas, trills, and other ornamentation.
The remainder of the CD features selections from Bellini's "I Puritani," and Donizetti's "Roberto Devereux," "Maria Stuarda," and "Anna Bolena." I can say pretty much the same about these pieces as already stated before. Excellent technique, wonderful ornamentation.
The second CD begins with the redoubtable piece, sung by "Olympia," from Offenbach's "Les Contes d'Hoffmann." Well done, with good vocal effects, catching the mechanical aspects of the music. Other pieces on this side come from Mozart, Heuberger, Moore, Korngold, and so on.
One piece worth mentioning, because it captures her approach to a lighter work, from Lehar's "The Merry Widow." She sings the song for what it is, and does not overwhelm it with her voice. Compare with what Richard Tucker did to the enjoyable but rather light song, "What Now My Love?", when he essayed singing pop tunes. Enjoyable for the thrill of his voice; pretty grisly in terms of his overwhelming the music itself. That does not happen here; there is a certain pathos in Sills' singing, as warranted by the song. It suggests the range of her singing.
All in all, a good sampling of "The Art of Beverly Sills." Hearing her voice again after many years reinforces my preexisting view that she ranks as one of the best coloratura sopranos of the past fifty years. There are terrific contemporary singers who sing the same repertoire and do it well. But Beverly Sills certainly compares very well with them. If interested in an introduction to Sillsiana, this is a good place to start.

The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
They were right--there is NO business like the show business they did way back when !!!.......2006-11-18
Can happen in a show
You can make 'em laugh
You can make 'em cry
Anything
Anything can go....
The clown with his pants falling down
Or the dance that's a dream of romance
Or the scene where the villain is mean
That's entertainment!
The lights on the lady in tights
Or the bride with the guy on the side
Or the ball where she gives him her all
That's entertainment!
The plot and the hot simply teeming with $ex
A gay divorcee who is after her ex
It could be Oedipus Rex
Where a chap kills his father
And causes a lot of bother
The clerk who is thrown out of work
By the boss who is thrown for a loss
By the skirt who is doing him dirt
The world is a stage,
The stage is a world of entertainment!
This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."
I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.
There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.
The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.
In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.
This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

OKAY, TAKE ME AWAY........2006-01-20
Last summer we had an incredible 20th anniversary trip to Italy. As a side trip from Venice, we planned a night in Verona. Neither my wife or I had been to an opera.
Is this how its supposed to be...
...an incredible star filled night with a three quarter moon, the largest stage and outdoor theatrical production on the planet, all taking place in a roman colleseum (arena) built in 180 a.d., an incredible colorful set and production with a full symphony orchestra and voices that don't come easy. Aida.
Now I know what all the hpye is as you opera fans sure are lucky to have such a beautiful setting for all your productions.
Okay, we got spoiled. But I also found myself getting spoiled on the Italian composer Verdi.
For me, this set is not only a "take me back to Verona" trip, but a great introduction to Verdi's other works. With some of the biggest names in the opera world in starring roles, I listened to both discs twice the first night they arrived.
And, of course, we are planning a return trip to Verona in the very near future to see some more Verdi...perhaps Nabucco or Otello or Macbeth...I'll even settle for Aida again. It was such a magical experience and a superb introduction to opera and Verdi.
This set continues that magical moment for us and provides a great introduction to a master of the opera...Verdi.
Great music...stunning recording quality.......2002-11-01

Simply beautiful.......2005-08-07
Simply Sublime.......2004-02-27
There are so many fine recordings of these songs.
The great Frederica Von Stade recorded a quite mesmerizing selection of the Auvergne songs at about the same time as Dame Kiri. There is the lovely recording by the legendary Victoria De Los Angeles, a selection of the songs many of us grew up on.
There is the seminal first complete recording (and then some, as I recall) by the late Natania Davrath, a much under-appreciated artist who, in many ways, is responsible for the popularity these songs enjoy today. Even Anna Moffo recorded a lovely handful of the songs in the 60s conducted by no less than Leopold Stokowski!
And then there is Dame Kiri. We know her. We love her. We have come to expect the best from her. We have come to always expect more from her, in fact, than from just about anyone else.
So unfair. We expect her to jump the musical hurdles of our emotional connections to music and art in a way we expect from few others.
And yet she so seldom disappoints. Is this the absolute best recording of the Chants d'Auvergne ever? Such a personal choice. Who is to say?
I can tell you this, once I heard this truly remarkable set, which has literally sent chills up my back since the the first time I heard it all those years ago, I knew my search for the recording of these songs I would keep near me forever was over.
Here is an interpretation combining, in equal measure, patrician elegance with almost peasant-like eloquence. She renders song after song, some deceptively complicated, with a divine simplicity that simply defies the imagination.
I don't know how Dame Kiri achieved this miraculous feat. It must have come from the heart, because it certainly goes to mine.
And finally, it would be unthinkable not to give credit to the exquisite playing of the English Chamber Orchestra and the always sensitive collaboration of conductor Jeffrey Tate.
LUSH AND PASSIONATE!.......2003-03-09
I first heard a selection of these songs 30 years ago, performed by Anna Moffo, and fell in love with them. It's wonderful to find a complete recording of all 5 series on this 2 CD set, sung by Kiri te Kanawa with enormous talent and verve. Whether the mood is passionate, playful, mocking, tender, mournful or-an emotion few composers have ever captured-helpless with pleasure, these pieces have one thing in common: they are the work of a master orchestrator at the height of his powers, using the fullest resources of the modern orchestra. You will not find more beautiful music than this!

Yes, it's true that 90% of the time Broadway fans will want the original Broadway cast recording over any other version, and 95% of the time the full recording will beat any set of "highlights." But this collection of songs from the Rent movie may defy both trends. Rentheads surely have the two-disc Broadway version already, and this well-selected 65 minutes may satisfy their desire to have performances from the movie as well (and the movie has less music than the show anyway). On the other end of the spectrum, people who enjoyed the movie but don't feel the compulsion to own every note of what they heard might well be pleased with a single disc of highlights. Pick it up and live La Vie Boheme all over again. --David HoriuchiAlbum Description
One of the longest-running shows in the history of Broadway, and one of its most beloved, Rent was the winner of the Pulizer Price for Drama and four Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Based on Puccini's classic opera "La Boheme," Jonathan Larson's revolutionary rock opera tells the story of a group of bohemians struggling for success and acceptance while enduring the obstacles of poverty, illness and the AIDS epidemic in New York's gritty East Village. Now the powerful musical marks its tenth year on stage by coming to the big screen, acompanied by RENT Highlights From the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack.Customer Reviews:

Born in Germany and boasting a Chinese-European heritage, Ottmar Liebert is a platinum-selling, Grammy-nominated acoustic guitarist, who is often lambasted as a purveyor of flamenco-lite. However, it is natural that so cosmopolitan a figure should express himself via mixed influences. His sound is a seamless--some might say homogenized--blend of Spanish and other Gypsy influences, incorporating American jazz and rock, New Age, and even Euro-pop. Liebert is indisputably a fine technician, with a weightless, fleet, mellow touch. Ten of these 12 tunes are brand-new versions of hits originally recorded during the 1990s, such as "Barcelona Nights," "Snakecharmer," and "Dancing Under the Moon." Whether these light instrumentals please is a matter of taste, but Luna Negra's arrangements would be more effective without the hackneyed keyboard vamps. Ultimately, fans of the Gipsy Kings, Ketama, and Strunk and Farah will enjoy themselves, but flamenco purists might prefer Ramon Montoya, Juan Martin, or Paco de Lucia. --Christina RodenCustomer Reviews:

Fantastic!.......2004-02-02
immensely enjoyable and inspired.......2003-09-30
An even greater life to these songs becomes apparent in the concert setting. The subtlety of the music comes across as much more powerful and, like artists such as Steve Stevens, a welcome improvement and unique twist to traditional Flamenco.
A Winner.......2003-04-09
Now, Mr. Liebert is back with a gem of a recording. Several pieces here, notably the beautiful SnakeCharmer, and his first hit, the catchy dance tune Barcelona Nights, have been extended and given new nuances while retaining the melodies we all know and love. That's true of every track here really. It has the spontaneity and feeling of a live recording, without the distraction of crowd cheering and noise.
Whether soft or loud, the guitar on this record is clear and crisp and really "strikes a chord" when you hear it. The percussion and horns and other things are nice, but they stay pretty much in the background and allow Mr. Ottmar Lierbert's splendid guitar work to shine through in the spotlight, which is a smart decision here. In addition to ten classic songs that have been re-worked, Mr. Liebert gives us Sao Paulo and Song For Pablo, two beautiful new tracks. If you are an Ottmar Liebert fan, you should love this. If you are not an Ottmar Liebert fan before you hear this CD, one listen to it may be enough to make you a fan. Peace, and God bless you.
Ottmar surpassed himself.......2003-03-20
Dan Aquilante of New York Post has described it best. According to him 'although it's a studio recording, it has the energy and feel of a live performance'.
He is right, many of these tunes hauntingly remind us of Ottmar's live performances.
Very desirable collection. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Classical guitar magnificence.......2005-05-20
In the little bend into the first note of the CD, Miller lets us know that what he's got in store for us will be subtle, respectful, elegant, and astoundingly technical and beautiful at the same time; that he respects and loves the music he's playing, but will play it as himself and from his heart, not just as a technically superior musician. His choices in the Bach pieces in particular are brilliant, unexpected, and profoundly affecting. The recording is very clean and very intimate.
I highly recommend this album to pop fans who aren't particularly interested in classical music, and to classical music fans who don't particularly like pop. Some very sophisticated arranging along with Miller's brilliant performances will convince both sides that maybe there's more in the other's camp than they thought.
beautiful work.......2004-09-06
I was lucky enough to get Mr Miller's autograph on this album and found him to be a really nice guy.
This is a great album and one that I can listen to over and over again. The remake of "Shape of My Heart" is outstanding, especially with his long time partner Sting on vocals.
This album is a must have. Thanks Dominic!
Relaxing music doesn't get any better than this.......2004-05-17
From Bach's Air on a G String to Sate's Gymnopedie. From Moonlight Sonata to Sting's glorious vocals in Shape of my heart, everything about this album is stamped with class.
Turn down the lights and lie back and enjoy.

Reyli's earnest, emotional honesty marks Fe, a stirring collection of rock-tinged tunes. The disc is an elegant affair, tempered by Reyli's pleasingly weathered vocals and thoughtful lyrics. He touches on the complexities of love, the meaning of life, and the importance of faith--sometimes within the same song. These tunes often dig deep, complemented by jangly guitar arrangements that are still ripe for radio play. "Elena" is alternately swaggering and sensitive. "Para Siempre" and "Con un Pie en el Cielo" both ride amiable, retro rock grooves. The disc's emotional centerpiece is first single "Pegale a la Pared." It's a touching tribute to women--and a warning to cowardly men. "I'll never forget my father's advice/Hit the wall/But never a woman," Reyli sings. The mood shifts during "Para Que Pienses en Mi," a joyous duet with Concetta Costanzo, and "La Declaracion," a confident assertion of self. The optimistic title tracks closes the disc: a list of life goals that takes flight via a cheeky, cheery rock arrangement. Reyli is a serious guy, but he shows us just enough of his sly smile to make Fe sparkle with surprise. --Joey GuerraCustomer Reviews:

I Found It Sublime........2002-04-05
WOW! Was I wrong! So wrong that I don't mind admitting it.
Victoria de los Angeles is one of the greats. Her command of her voice is superb. Her phrasing leaves me breathless. The previous reviewer called her voice too heavy for these songs. While I have not heard the works he/she noted, I did not have that reaction. The selection of works is marvelous. I cannot recommend this CD higher. I recommend it for the true classic connoisseur, for the person who 'just' likes classics, and for the person who likes some classics but not all and needs to hear a recognizable tune.
A last comment, my first thought was that the recording suffered because I (mistakenly) felt that the source of her voice in the recording was too removed from the microphone. I was wrong again. In fact the balance of her clear, soprano voice to the orchestra is perfect.

Ahh, Florence!!.......2002-10-14
I love medieval and renaissance music. They are the "roots" of the great classics centuries later. One does not cultivate a complete education of art by studying only such Masters as Van Gogh, Renoir, Picasso, Dali etc. So it is with fine music.
These CD's contain examples of Florentine musical composition from the 1300's and 1500's. The first CD, performed by David Munrow and the Early Music Consort, covers compositions from the 1300's, with many of the works of Francesco Landini, the most prolific Florentine composer of this period. The second covers music from the 1500's and is performed by John Beckett and the Musica Reservata. Here we can see the early development of both symphonic structure and opera.
Both discs are wonderful examples of different periods in the history of musical development, and performed by different conductors and artists. Therefore a comparison between the two is unfair and misplaced. David Munrow and the Early Music Consort are superb, as I have always found them to be, and John Beckett and the Musica Reservata are equally enjoyable.
If you appreciate early music you will find this recording to be a fantastic addition to your collection, and perhaps the definitive collection of early Italian music. If you are unfamiliar with early music or with Italian Renaissance music then these CD's would be a wonderful introduction.
