Cornucopia of Pavarotti's works.......2007-03-01
This is a "Super hits" CD, with over forty different cuts (quite a few of which have appeared elsewhere, of course). For those who are aficionados of Pavarotti, this is what might be called "hog heaven."
Disc 1 features estimable works such as "Nessun dorma" (well done, with his voice showing to good effect), "Che gelida manina" (excellently done, with good characterization), ""Celeste Aida" (elegantly sung), "Di quella pira" (a much better than average version), "E lucevan le stelle" (Pavarotti does a nice job in the Puccini-Verdi repertoire), "La donna e mobile" (sung with aplomb), "Recondita armonia" (the other aria from Tosca, which also shows Pavarotti's voice off to good effect), and so on.
Disc 2 is especially interesting, because it features a more popular set of works, from the redoubtable "O sole mio" (richly orchestrated and nicely sung, not overpowered by Pavarotti's operatic voice), "Core n'grato" (compare with Caruso's version), "Oh, holy night," "La danza" (spritely sung with excellent breath control in a treacherous song), "Santa Lucia" (again, smoothly sung), "Ave Maria" (seemingly sung with respect and affection).
A cornucopia of Pavarottiana. For those fans of Pavarotti, this "greatest hits" collection will be welcome. For those who may not be aware of this tenor when his voice was still fresh, this is a fine entrée to his work.
Don't...!!!.......2005-01-24
To combine a voice as beautiful as Pavarotti's with some of the world's greatest music and outstanding orchestras, and end up with this...`thing'...is unforgivable. After buying and listening to it, it brought to mind those painful words "A fool, a fool. I saw a fool today. I saw him in the mirror."

Great Tenor - Poor CD Quality.......2004-10-11
I have never been a huge fan of Maestro Pavarotti but I must admit that this compilation is a masterful collection of his operatic highlights.
I particularily enjoy the first disc which contains just about all the major tenor arias. The singing is superb and listening to this CD it becomes obvious what the fuss over the pre-3 Tenors Pavarotti was all about - the man really did have one of the greatest tenor voices of all time.
His diction was flawless, his line perfect and his interpretation in keeping with the greatest of the Italian tenors of days gone by.
The second disc is interesting in that it is a bit uneven. It contains a few neapolitan standards, a x-mas song, a duet with Frank Sinatra and some other random selections.
Overall this is a 5 star CD but due to the extremely low volume, particularily on the first and most important disc I can only give it a 4 star rating.
On a final note, anyone puzzeled by the current hype over the now againg and commercially over-blown Pavarotti should purchase this CD. This is the great tenor in his prime and as such a CD well worth having...even if you're not a Pavarotti fan.
I'm still not, but I recognize greatness when I hear it.
Great Music......Horrible Mastering.......2004-07-24
Pavarotti has a voice that can take hold of you and change your entire mood...even if you don't know Italian. The problem with this set is the mastering (mastering evens out the volumes and signal to noise ratio on an album). The first CD in this collection is so quiet that you literally have to crank your player to get any kind of volume. For a professional CD this is absolutely unacceptable.
The song choices are good with the exception of "My Way" with Frank Sinatra. Both singers sound ....ummm...let's just say less than their best on the recording. It sits out like a boil on a pretty girl's face.
Surely I am proud to be an Italian-American!!.......2004-06-26
With his wondrous soaring vocals and the humble demeanor within his strong body, Pavarotti is an inspiration to Italian- Americans everywhere - Italian-Americans like me. My family plays his beautiful operas on vinyl nearly every day in me Papa's little wine and cheese shop on 18th and Broadway. The customers compliment the music with glee, pinching my plump cheeks with merriment and wishing me well on their way out the door. Ah, how I love this land of America!!
Oops, I am sorry, Nana.
My Nana has shushed me to "pipe down, little bambino."
I must go down to the dark cellar to count our day's earnings, for it is almost night, and stern Papa will be back soon to close shop and make sure all is well.

Okay so track #1 aside..........2005-12-14
I got this as a gift last Christmas and just got around to writing a review. To start off with, let me say that I think Pavarotti is the greatest tenor ever. Period. His command of his voice (breath control, relaxation, etc.) were absolutely flawless, and no he never shouted (except when he was getting old and losing his voice...maybe), cause I have never heard anyone shout with vibrato. Anyways, yes I have heard better accompanyments than Caruso's (track #1) on a certain children's show that will remain unnamed but it features a large purple dinosaur, but that doesn't ruin the entire CD for me like it did for the other reviewers. Let's face it the rest of the CD is Pavarotti classics. You won't find a better Nessun Dorma anywhere. His La Danza is wonderful, his L'elisir is legendary and La Boheme's Rodolfo is one of, if not his truly signature role. As for the Neapolitan songs, you can't criticize him for those. It's no different than Kathleen Battle throwing in a few spirituals on her CDs. Yes, I wish there were more arias on the CD (Ah! Mes amis for instance) but still was not dissappointed by this CD at all. Buy it!
What the heck?.......2005-09-12
I'm so glad I didn't pay for this disc, instead checking it out from the my public library. The first track, "Caruso", had me thinking I was playing the wrong CD. It's not so much that it's electronic accompaniment. It's really bad synthesizer music. Horribly bad. Inexcusably bad. Cheap-lounge-singer-who-can't-afford-a-piano bad. That train wreck of track sets exactly the worst tone, destroying the mood for the rest of the album. If it weren't for some of the later selections from La Bohème and L'Elisir d'Amore, this CD would be a total loss. Even then, these gems are completely drowned in a gushing flow of treacly Italian "classics" apparently aimed at a certain demographic of blue-haired, tittering Pavarotti fans. I don't mean to sound like a snob. It's just the bad vibe from that first track rattling me. My advice: get it from the library and listen to your favorites. Avoid everything else on pain of intense aural assault.
Why on earth is this listed under classical music?.......2004-03-22
Pavarotti has a short but excellent repertoire that belongs in "Classical Music" (e.g. Fille du Regiment), however 99% of his recordings belong in Popular Music. Amazon folks, please get your act straight on this guy and his other two tenor friends!

The Very Best Of Luciano Pavarotti.......2004-01-28
This weekend I purchased "The Very Best of Luciano Pavarotti", Romantica. The first track, Caruso is terrible. Classical music, opera, etc, should never be played with synthesized anything! This is especially true with voices like Pavarotti's. This first track was CHEAP and tinny sounding.
Pavarotti is good, but I think that the title is misleading.
Classical music should be with real musical instruments. Lesson #1, if it takes electricity, it's NOT a musical instrument.

Pinnock - pretty good Haydn, but not the best.......2006-12-08
As I type this review, I am listening to the recording of Symphony #52 from this set.
Earlier today, I listened to these recordings of Symphonies 51 and 43 as well. I have owned many of these recordings since they first came out. In fact, this is the first recording of 43 I had ever heard, but the symphony never grabbed me until I heard a different recording (conducted by Aadland on Imp classics, hard to find). Pinnock races through it and misses a lot of the character and the sense of inevitability that this symphony has to offer. The recording of 51 is better with Derek Solomons, more character in the horn solo slow movement (though I have some reservations about that set as well!).
Overall, it seems that Pinnock just doesn't dig deeply enough into these wonderful symphonies. Yes, they are fast and lively. But there's not enough articulation, oomph, depth to make this the set to own.
My favourite set of symphonies.......2006-08-13
This recording is one of my "desert island discs". I have listened to it over and over again over the last four years and I am still finding new and exciting things in this music. Haydn's symphonies are very important to me and I feel very at home in this music. Why? I am not sure. This is musical music - music which celebrates music. I realise that this doesn't make much sense. Mozart's symphonies are always very clever and always full of Mozart's brilliance and superb sense of style and form. Haydn's symphonies aren't "obvious" - they require a little more effort for someone like me to appreciate, and this is their strength - once this music is appreciated, it stays that way!
Mr. Trevor Pinnock, directing The English Concert [on period instruments] from his harpsichord, provides us with a wide window into these works - 19 symphonies, over 6 CDs. The playing is very attractive and colourful. The wind and brass players are in fine form, particularly the horn players. The strings have that transparency and incisiveness which period violins, violas, 'cellos and basses and original styled bows bring to 18th century music.
I can imagine a different approach and interpretation of some of these works, but I cannot imagine anyone doing it better than Pinnock and his ensemble.
If you're a fan of the "Sturm und Drang" style, although much of this music is far from stressful or stormy!, you will probably enjoy comparing these symphonies with those of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach.
Unpleasant Recording Spoils Set.......2005-10-13
Note added later: I now urge potential buyers to consider as an alternative the Nimbus set with Fischer, symphonies 40-54. Wonderful performances with recording that goes much further in capturing some of the beauty of a violin - without the disadvantage of earlier harsh digital sound.
Amazon does us all a huge favor by allowing us to voice our thoughts away from the endless commercial shilling of the music industry. Yes, not everybody agrees all the time, but it is not difficult to determine if reviewers hate an artist and just have it in for her or him, or simply find fault with a performance or its engineering. I happen to admire and respect both the conductor of this CD issue and his band.
Since what I heard put me in a minority of one - to judge by those who took the time to read my review - I replayed several sides of this CD again the other day on a friend's far superior system. I should add that together we have over 100 years of listening to recorded sound, and my collection goes back to the 1890's. So we have some fair grasp of this medium. After less than a minute of the first CD, he turned to me, and winced. Moreover we could not find any improvement in the sound on any of the other sides.
As for the other reviewers glorious reviews - be open-minded; trust yourself to take a few minutes and compare Pinnock's band in the opening to Symphony 48, Maria Theresia, to Janigro's group on Bach Guild, ATM-CD-1495. Afterall, it's your money. One performance sounds imperial, and the music sounds most appropriate for an Empress.
Original instruments do sound very nice - as anyone who has heard live one of the better Cremona masterpieces can attest. And those violins were built long before Haydn was even born! Don't believe all "original violins" must sound like they do in this recording.
Again, for a far better sounding CD issue do yourself a huge favor - try the budget priced Bach Guild CD of the Sturm and Drang symphonies conducted by Janigro. Again. ATM-CD-1495. It has a superior performance of the Maria Theresia, #48 in a robust C Major.
And just to be fair - Janigro's recording of the Boyce symphonies is disappointing, whereas Pinnock's is excellent. Perhaps there is something to leading in music of your own culture.
The absolute best set of the Sturm and Drang symphonies you will ever find.......2005-08-18
I didn't buy this boxed set, but aquired these wonderful discs one by one. I love the whole set, but I bought the one with symphonies 35,38,39,59 first. It is my favorite of the six. That one is really one of those desert island discs. There is such a rhythmic drive and electricity in volume one that I hardly ever hear in classical music. If you're kind of feeling down, these symphonies by the English Concert, will definitely bring you out of the doldrums. Volumes 2-6 are equally as well played, but I personally enjoy Volume one better. Trevor Pinnock is superb as usual. He's definitely one of the greatest conductors of the baroque and classical periods. I would like to see him venture into the romantic period to see how good he would do with that style. The sound quality of this set is just superb. Everything sounds crystal clear in these recordings. If you don't like these performances, check your pulse because I think your dead.
Lively and energetic Haydn - many "surprise" gems here.......2005-03-12
I find myself turning to this modest box of 6 CDs containing 19 mostly little-known Haydn symphonies far more often than to any other Haydn symphony recordings on my shelf.
The complete cycles I own are certainly great achievements that I would never want to be without. Dorati's magnificent complete cycle (see Amazon asin # B0000042DP) is a classic that has stood the test of time. Brilliant classics has ressurected the Adam Fischer cycle from the Nimbus bankruptcy (see Amazon asin # B00006GA50), though the price is now much higher than it was when Brilliant Classics originally released it in 2002. For some of the more famous symphonies, like the London Symphonies, there are many stellar paerformances, such as the Colin Davis/Concertgebouw recordings available on 2 Philips Duo offerings.
But none of the above, or other unspecified recordings, hold a candle to these Pinnock recordings when it comes to an all around enjoyable musical experience. The Minuets have a swaggering quality that is intoxicating. You'd think Haydn invented dance music. Who needs the Strauss family? The Allegros have vitality about them that brings you to the edge of your seat. And the slower movements have phenomenal penetrating depth and wide ranging dynamics one would never expect from Haydn.
And unlike some critics, I don't think there is anything "unfaithful" to the score about these readings. Pinnock doesn't resort to Stokowski-like modifications or liberalities to make the music come alive. What does come across is that all of the musicians appear to be having fun. And when musicians are having fun like this, you do too.
And for the bargain basement price, this a must have.
Not a Haydn fan? Get this set and you will be.

Enjoyable CD.......2007-01-05
I'm really satisfied with this CD. It' sung with a great refinement. It' really beautiful
Different, and yet, Delicious Art.......2005-09-27
It gives you entirely different feelings when these Neapolitan songs, conventionally sung by Italian tenors, are sung by Dmitri Hvorostovsky. What makes the difference, apart from the burnished, warm-toned, and simply gorgeous baritone, is the powerful and deeply heartfelt rendering that evokes fresh emotions as well as enriches exuberant lyricism. Although Mr. Hvorostovsky sees this repertoire as a crossover for him, he possesses everything in his department to make memorable interpretations of the songs. The rich voice has an impeccably wide vocal range (up to A-flat as demonstrated in this album) with the consistent superb quality, all well focused, across the entire register. The exceptionally beautiful legatos of his, together with the ability of eloquent phrasing and shaping, make the songs all the more heart-throbbing. The poignant moments in "Passione", "Voce'e notte", "Dicitencello vuie" carried out in various dynamic shadings reach the emotional level that could break your heart. The climax in "Torna a Surriento", "Core 'ngrato", "'O sole mio" are filled with ardent, fully unleashed, passion. These are passionate Neapolitan songs sung with hot blooded passion. I don't understand why some people would nitpick something like Hvorostovsky's Neapolitan diction, when the voice and the singing alone are already powerful enough to give one a heart attack.
mal canto.......2002-08-28
I should have learned my lesson with the Arie Antiche disc from Hvorostovsky, but in the great tradition of Neapolitan song, this is substandard. Hvorostovsky commits the same errors here as in the other disc. When he takes a breath, it is extremely loud, which is a most un bel-canto-like habit. The guy sounds like he has a 2 pack a day habit. This gets in the way of the music all the time, and leads you to believe he doesn't understand these songs at all. Moreover, his Neapolitan diction is sloppy. Yes, most of these songs are in Neapolitan, NOT Italian. There are marked differences, which are lost on this recording.
If you want to hear what this repetoire is supposed to sound like, get the Testament discs of Giuseppe di Stefano.
ROMANCE.......2002-08-23
I've been a fan of Dmitri Hvorosovsky ever since he hit the operatic world. I feel that he is now truly in his prime and I'm just glad that Delos "picked" him up when Philips dumped him.
This album of Italian songs is just wonderful. If you don't find his singing beautiful, you have a heart of stone.
After a hard day at work, I come home and get a glass of wine and put Dmitri's Passione di Napoli recording on the stereo and once again my soul is restored!
All I can say is thank-you Dmitri Hvorosovsky!
Finally A Baritone!.......2002-03-27
Ok, I know, lots of people are giving this CD five stars and I would too, ecept I can't get over the recording quality of this album. I love Dimitri and baritones especially! I don't know who this company is, ( Delos* ) Who ever heard of this company before now! I have a very good stereo system and it sounds as if Hvorostovsky is singing behind the orchestra. So now I've got my Stereo volume high just to hear him, then you've got the instruments blaring out! Please don't get me wrong, this CD is well worth the money, And I'am a little tired of hearing these lovely songs sung by tenors only. I have a weakness for baritones since I'm also one myself. And yes, his voice is very warm and suited for these type of songs. The Cd is worth buying for only to hear his voice flowing easily with the luscious music of the Napoli.
Buy it! Also check out Thomas Hampson, Night And Day CD

Pavarotti Passione.......2000-10-28
I purchased this as an audio cassette tape when it was released in 1987. I have listened to the cassette until it is barely audible any longer. I am so pleased to find it available on CD. It demonstrates the warm, rich voice of Pavarotti and is appropriately named "Passione". The passion really comes through in this music.

Customer Reviews:
Few Could Sing Neapolitan Songs like Lanza.......2007-03-13
Neapolitan music is very special and unique. It requires singing from the soul and heart and a voice that articulates the language and its many nuances
Mario Lanza was not Neapolitan but he mastered the dialect and the music and the lyrics in a way that few have been able to articulate. As always, Lanza gives a wonderful performance on this album which does not need or deserve the pieces from the Vagabond King.
The greatest voice of this century and the twentieth century comes out in this splendid work. Just having the Neapolitan songs sung by Mario is worth the cost. I recommend it highly for lovers of the best and brightest, like Lanza was.
Canto Neapolitane.......2006-02-08
This was the last album Lanza recorded in which he was able to muster all his vocal splendor and create what remains perhaps the most passionately interpreted set of Neapolitan songs ever recorded by any tenor in history ( a close second being recordings by di Stefano, Corelli and Sergio Franchi).
Lanzas diction is uncannily Neapolitan, which is no mean feat considering that the Neapolitan dialect is all but impossile to duplicate by anyone not born and raised in the region. Even such greats as Corelli and del Monaco had problems with it and the much over-rated Pavarotti never even came close.
Lanza nailed it!
The song selection is great with the exception of Funicula...that song doesn't work no matter who sings it.
My personal favs are Dichitenchello Vuie, Voce la Notte, and Passione...Canta'p'me being a close second.
Lanzas gift for pouring his every emotion into his singing really comes forth on these songs. Moreso even than on any of his operatic selections which are peerless in their own right.
However; in my mind, Lanza always did his best work on the Neapolitan songs.
The songs from the soundtrack of the film "The Vagabond King" are about as lame as can be. They are right along the usual line of Hollywood junk which Lanza recorded too much of in his short career.
Thus the 4 star rating. I turn the CD off once the Neapolitan stuff is over with.
The only other major distraction here is not due to anything Mario could have controlled or done differently. It's in that that RCA decided to release this album in this then newly discovered "stereo surround" format, which was nothing more than overblown reverb effects. This worked well for a thin voiced Elvis, but it didn't fare to well with this type of material or Marios larger than life voice.
In the end, this is, and always will be a collection of the finest sung Neapolitan songs ever recorded.
Bravo Commendatore Lanza! Bravo!
GREAT!!!!!.......2005-11-26
If your gong to get one Mario Lanza CD or CD Set get the Mario Lanza Collection, But if you want to get one more, get this one, Mario Lanza At His Best. This is one CD (not a set like the collection) which contain many beautiful Italian folk songs and then competes with the songs from Lanza's Movie, The vagabond king. Lanza sings wonderful renditions of Funiculi Funicula, Dicitencello Vuie (just beautiful), Maria Mari (my Grandmothers favorite song), Voce e' Notte, Canta pe' Me, O Surdato Namurato, Comme Facette Mammeta?, Santa Lucia Luntana, Fenesta Che Lucive, Ta Ca Nun Chiagne, 'Na Sera 'e Maggio, and Passione (Which is just beautiful. Then the CD moves to the songs form the vagabond King; Drinking Song, Some day, Love Me Tonight, only A Rose, Tomorrow, Nocturne, Song of the vagabonds and Finale all well done. Judy Rasking sings with Mario on Some day, Only A Rose, Tomorrow, and Finale.
world's greatest tenor.......2005-10-29
Mario Lanza was a singer who possessed an absolutely glorious voice. soaring and beautiful, with a deep rich tone. He sings exclusively in his native Italian language on these recordings and the record is in two parts. the first 12 songs are more operatic in structure, containing moody, solemn passages in which Lanza's voice excels in the passion and romantic solitude that this kind of music is so well at expressing. the remaining eight tracks are a series called The Vagabond King and it's song structures are a little bit more of the old Hollywood variety, beginning with the cheery "Drinking Song" (which was a high rated hit in the u.s.). Mario is joined by soprano Judith Raskin on 4 of the songs and his singing is in English for these songs. this is a great introduction to the world of this fabulous singer.
I've fallen in love again.......2003-01-12
I had this as a LP record many years ago, and was absolutely thrilled to find the CD. I had always loved Lanza's voice, but I now realize that he was without a doubt one of the best tenor voices of the century. His ability to sing so many different types of songs is astounding. His voice is strong, filled with emotion and in some of the songs you can hear that he is hugely enjoying himself. What an incredible pity that he died at such a young age and was never able to fulfill all that he could have been.

The Best.......2007-01-12
If you appreciate Pavarotti you will love this 2 disk set. I actually bought this twice over the years. Some of the best passages from the best Operas and the recording is outstanding. Well worth the price.
Absolutely wonderful!.......2006-09-25
I've owned this collection since 1991 and to this day it's become an absolute reference for me, constantly being played over and over again. Pavarotti at his very best! A very complete and representative collection of tenor songs, oratorio and opera arias in a 2CD presentation.

Not exactly my cup of coffee!!.......2004-03-19
When I purchased this item I had been looking long and hard for one of my favorite artists -- Carlo Buti -- so when I saw that he was one of the featured artists on this album I bought it. Unfortunately the other artists on the album left me wanting more Carlo Buti. While the songs were nostalgic and brought a tear to my eyes, I found myself wishing the entire album had been Carlo Buti. Sorry, Gigli and the others left me wanting more Buti. If not for him the album would have gone in the not played pile. But I loved the songs.

This exact set is available in another format for nearly three times as much, and I believe they are the same transfers. So this is the one to purchase. Many of the performances are worth the Set price by themselves. Number 48 is a great symphony for cheering up a blowsy day or attitude, and the others contain tremendous passions - literally in one case - normally not expected when listeners think of Haydn. The sound of the original LPs has been transferred reasonably well, with a degree of fidelity far more acceptable than many modern original instrument performances.
For this price you will have several of the most glorious symphonies of the entire repetoire, and again, 48 is the crowning glory, if I may be allowed a small pun.
