Bob Seger has racked up a lot of worthy tracks over the years, but it took until 1994 for a greatest hits package to appear. Voilà. The bad news: We're missing an awful lot of songs here. Night Moves is Seger's crit-pick album, and a great place to start if you don't have any Seger at all. Next in the rankings is Stranger in Town. Otherwise, his highs are pretty scattered, which would make any best-of package a worthy investment. But if you want to get comprehensive, "Rock & Roll Never Forgets," "Fire Down Below," "Horizontal Bop," "Her Strut," "Betty Lou's Getting Out Tonight," and "Katmandu" aren't on this CD--and you'll have to go to the original albums to secure them. --Gavin McNettAmazon.com

That is what this greatest hits focuses on, the songs that became the standards by which the public remembers the band. If you were interested in the albums BEFORE "Infinity," I suggest "Time 3," which adds material from the years when Neal Schon was still aping his jazz-Rock tenure with Santana and Gregg Rollie was doing standard rock keyboard boogie. Personally, I liked them better when Perry got on board. The sound focused and the songwriting tightened. Songs like "Separate Ways/Worlds Apart" and "Any Way You Want It" could add a jolt of adrenaline to a day of radio. When Jonathan Cain replaced Gregg Rollie on "Escape," Journey took on a romantic bent from Cain's songwriting. "Open Arms" came first, then "Faithfully" (on "Frontiers") solidified it. These were pop radio songs without peer, and they make Journey's "Greatest Hits" an essential document of 70's and 80's radio rock. (The updated version includes the best song from the 90's reunion "Trial by Fire," "When You Love A Woman.")
The other reason you might be looking at this is not because of Steve Perry's voice or Neal Schon's guitar heroics, but because of Tony and Carmella. It was Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" that echoed out of the final minutes of "The Sopranos" closing episode. It was funny that Tony passed over Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra for Journey and inspire a million parodies in the process. (Including Hilary Clinton...where the best moment is when she and President Bill Clinton are flipping through songs and Bill says "My money's on Smash Mouth...") Talk about cementing your place in pop culture...who could have asked for better?
This best of offers a pair of soundtrack rarities in "Only The Young" (from "Vision Quest") and "Ask The Lonely" (from "Two of a Kind"). Missing are a few crucial singles like "Suzanne," "Stone In Love" and "Walks Like A Lady." If you really want them, go for the box sets or individual CD's.

The Mamas and the Papas had a sound that helped define a portion of the 1960s. Their breezy folk classics had a bit of San Francisco psychedelia woven in, and, despite the sweet harmonies, there was also a noticeably dark feel to some of their more popular work. "California Dreamin'" and "Monday, Monday" both utilized enough minors to give them a spooky edge. Greatest Hits is an essential part of any audiophile's collection, especially if they don't have the original recordings that spawned the hits. "Dedicated to the One I Love" is almost ironic for its tenderness, considering the turmoil that rumbled through the band's interrelationships. While John and Michelle Phillips and Denny Doherty were all responsible for the success of the Mamas and the Papas, listening to this collection reveals that the late great Mama Cass was not only the heart but the soul of the band. I love the biggest hits, as well as the album tracks & minor hits, like Denny's lead on DANCING BEAR, NO SALT ON HER TAIL, which should have been a single, and SAFE IN MY GARDEN - one of their last singles in 1968. And of course, their anthems CALIFORNIA DREAMIN', MONDAY MONDAY, GO WHERE YOU WANNA GO, and many more. LOOK THROUGH MY WINDOW is just majestic with Denny's lead, Cass & Michelle's backing vocals & the swirling strings. John Phillips wrote it, and it's one of their masterpieces, like MONDAY MONDAY is.

While "California Dreamin" wasn't their all-time biggest chart topper, it is most assuredly the song that us fans think of most often when we read or hear about this amazingly talented Quartet. Drugs, alcohol and who knows what else very much contributed to a great deal of the problems and in some respects their eventual break-up, but NOBODY can seriously take away the impact that they have had over the years.
Personally I feel that Denny Doherty was one of the most underrated singers of the 60's. His talent on their signature song is unmistakable, and since his passing recently, will be sorely missed. As it stands, we now only have Michelle left of the original four members. All I can say is for the casual fans of the band, this is a great collection to have, and you will be amazed at the selection of songs that you probably haven't heard before that are assembled here. For the true Mamas & the Papas fans, it'll take you on an incredible trip down memory lane the way only great music can. I find that through specific songs I can remember obscure moments of my life that otherwise I honestly would have totally forgotten otherwise. Its an amazing medium and one I am fortunate to work in regularly.
While I didn't hit my teen years in the 60's, I was fortunate to have worked at an Oldies themed radio station for several years which helped me to really learn to love this music in a way I probably never would have in any other way. Give this CD a shot and get ready for hours--if not years of pure enjoyment.

Anyone looking for the key to Abba's enduring appeal should look no further than "Voulez Vous" and "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)" for their answer. There was an innocence to the Swedish quartet, even when they were singing about one-night stands and the invitations to them. Gold establishes that the band, while appreciated as campy, were actually multifaceted in their execution. "S.O.S." has a raw urgency in its chorus, and "Does Your Mother Know" draws its energy from classic '50s rock & roll. Likewise, you don't have to be Priscilla to swoon over "Mamma Mia" or "Dancing Queen." And when it comes to drama, those soaring vocals on "The Winner Takes It All" turn the song into a bitter anthem of every relationship that has ever fallen apart. On the cover of Foreigner's newest collection, the letters that spell out Complete Greatest Hits are cut out from world currency. For example, there's an A from Antarctica, a T from Trinidad, an M from Mongolia, and so on. At least the drive behind this third greatest-hits compilation (fourth, if you count The Best of Foreigner Live) is clearly admitted. Still, if anyone deserves your money, an argument can be made for guitarist Mick Jones and singer Lou Gramm. They've been through it all, and along the way, they've written a slew of songs you know well enough to perform at karaoke (but never as well, admittedly--Lou has a hell of a voice). This is the first attempt to consolidate all of Sir Elton's hit singles, from three labels, in one collection. It once would've required at least four CDs to own the best stuff here. Many think the legendary performer was at his best in the early to mid-'70s, and the incredible string of singles that ran from 1970's "Your Song" through 1977's "Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word" remains mighty impressive. But in retrospect, as they're presented here, '80s hits like "I'm Still Standing" and "Sad Songs" add much to an already amazing legacy. Three Disney tunes, the lush "The One," and two from Songs from the West Coast, which was hailed as a return to those '70s golden days, represent the later years. There are just to many really great songs from Elton John's 70's period. Just to name a few not included: "Mona Lisa And Mad Hatters", "Tonight", "Sixty Years On", "I need You to Turn To", "Madman Across the Water", etc, etc.
Nevertheless it's a great introduction to Elton's career. But if you want make yourself a treat, please buy "Elton John live in Australia", it's maybe his best CD released ever, all of his hits backed by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Live In Australia With The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Now that CD is just brilliant.
PS: in disc two, where is Blue Eyes?! Great song.

Elton John is good. This CD is even better. I was disappointed to learn that he didn't write a lick of his own lyrics (Bernie Taupin did). Elton John just wrote the music. And I guess we need to hear great music before we'll listen to the lyrics of a song.
Amazon is currently selling the CD for $15. The good news is that there is $20 worth of great music on it. This CD is worth ever dollar and them some. The essential Elton John songs are: Disc 1 - Tracks 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,11,12,13,14,15 & 16 (and I guess Candle In The Wind). Disc 2 - Tracks 1,3,4,5 & 6.

If time is the true test, then Guns N' Roses' Greatest Hits confirms that they really were one of the greatest rock & roll bands in the world. While, in retrospect, fellow graduates of the class of 1987 are about as cool as poodle perms and spandex, the L.A. bad boys still rock like gods. Listening to the sun-drenched chords of "Paradise City" and the ensuing stadium-sized swagger is enough to make wearing leather trousers and bandanas seem like a good idea. Of course, it helped that for them sex, drugs, and rock & roll was a way of life, not a fashion statement. As Axl Rose wails "I wanna watch you bleed" on "Welcome to the Jungle" like a chain-smoking lunatic possessed, it's hard not to believe he meant it. Yet equally, it was his surprisingly poetic nature that made genuinely touching love songs of "Patience" and "Sweet Child of Mine."Though none of their subsequent albums matched the drug-crazed genius of Appetite for Destruction, they did, as the Greatest Hits reminds, have their moments. From the bloated Use Your Illusion I & II came ultimate rock ballads "Don't Cry" and "November Rain," along with the primal rage that was "You Could Be Mine." And while the covers of the The Spaghetti Incident? were largely forgettable, the fact that their final single was a seedy sneer through the Rolling Stones' "Sympathy for the Devil" seems spectacularly fitting. --Dan Gennoe

Every one of the 16 older tracks is a well-crafted gem, full of solid guitar hooks ("Here Comes My Girl"), arresting images ("Don't Come Around Here No More") and simple but poetic lyrics ("The Waiting").Petty isn't an innovator; he's a talented craftsman with impeccable taste and a strong sense of rock history, internalizing influences ranging from the Beatles' psychedelic masterpiece, Revolver, to the best of '70s punk. (It's interesting to remember that early efforts such as "Refugee" and "Don't Do Me Like That" first won Petty attention as a New Wave artist). With his Dylanesque vocals and chiming 12-string guitars, Petty is more often linked these days with the sounds of the '60s. But recent tunes such as "Learning to Fly" and "Into the Great Wide Open" are as smart, relevant and (dare I say) alternative as anything in MTV's Buzz Bin. --Jim DeRogatis

Firstly, I suppose I am kicking myself for not being aware of the 2000 Anthology by this band...and that Anthology addresses some of the criticisms I have of this compilation.
One of my criticisms is that this compilation does NOT have Tom Petty's duet with girlfriend of the time, Stevie Nicks, of Fleetwood Mac fame ["Stop dragging my heart around"]. Just btb-I do remember hearing in a short radio series about New Zealand super-group Split Enz [whom I consider to be in the same league as Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers] that when the two groups toured together at one time, Tom Petty was a really big pain to them.
This is a band that continually gets lots of their songs played on commercial FM radio over here in Australia...songs like: Refugee; I won't back down; Runnin' down a dream; Free fallin', and Don't come around here no more.
For me, TP&THB is one of those good bands which don't quite have the large catalogue of good songs of the supergroups like The Beatles or AC/DC or Midnight Oil etc, but they have more good songs than you might give them credit for.
E.g. one of my fave songs of theirs is "Don't come around here no more". It features a Beatle-esque or George Harrison-ish Indian guitar or sitar opening. If you get the chance, you should have a look at the memorable video for this terrific song-it heavily references the book by Lewis Carrol "Alice in Wonderland". The video trickery is wonderful to watch.
I'll write down some of the notes I made for this compilation when I was listening to it:
"Anything that's rock'n'roll" reminded me of the guitar sound of, I think, Australia's The Ted Mulry Gang [David Hasselhoff murdered a terrific song of theirs called "Jump in in my car"...maybe this is the song that the TP&THB song reminds me of in some ways. Tom Petty also seems to have Elvis Costello style vocals in this song. I should point out that it looks like MY version of this compilation has an EXTRA song-the one above-I THINK that my version may an earlier version of this compilation or perhaps a later one, or perhaps the version released here in Australia.
"Listen to her heart"-the guitar intro to this song reminds me of the guitar work for the song "Needles and pins".
"I need to know"-here Petty has Bob Dylan-esque vocals. The same goes for "Refugee". Just by the by, I've never heard a bad song with "Refugee" in the title! Check out the Australian band Cold Chisel's song with this this word in the title. Petty's song has a distinctive keyboard sound to it.
"The waiting"-another good song I like from this band. It has a "Turn, turn, turn" style guitar intro.
"You got lucky"-the synthesiser introduction to this song reminded me of The Police's own synth sound for their song "Spirits in the material world". I reviewed The Police's new compilation today at this site.
"I won't back down"-this song has the feel of an E.L.O. song-and seeing as E.L.O's lead singer Jeff Lynne has production credits for this Petty compilation, it is perhaps Lynne's influence which comes out strongly on this song.
"Running down a dream"-another song that you will hear on Australian commercial FM radio. I made a note that this song features an AC/DC style menacing guitar sound.
"Free falling"-another one of my favourite TP songs. It has nice backing singing and some nice guitar work.
"Mary Jane's last dance"-features harmonica, a Neil Young sound to it and a guitar intro reminiscent, I think, of Young's song "Heart of gold".
Lastly, there is a decent cover of the 60's political song "Something in the air".
Overall, this is an album of accomplished pop/rock which is standing the test of time, judging by the fact that this artist is such an FM staple in Australia.

Pettyness Which Plays So Rough................2007-05-19
You all know by now how music works. It seeps into your mind. Then, at a later predestined time, you just have to revisit it. It gets into your blood, or synapses, or, into your need to escape and just have fun. And, music should be a pure joy for you as well as something to delve below the surface for. Sometimes we have to do some work too, but if we didn't, it wouldn't be as rich, or rewarding. This is what the whole thing is about. And I've found that I'm allegic to clown wigs. I'm sure the tabloids will have a field day with that.
This album is a testimony for the faithless, an alimony for the penny-less, a contrition for the heartless, and just plain shock treatment for the synapse-less. And, you heard all that first right here from your informative Metamorpho.
I listened to this loud and it shakes and kicks the fibers of your soul into some outer-metaphysical place beyond human comprehension. It is rock, for sure, but such a damn near perfect addicting form of it that it's hard to explain- or comprehend, for that matter. Most of the subject matter centers around relationships - which are nothing new in the rock arena. But, it's what Petty and his fine band of musicians have done with it. They've molded it into generous hooks and alluring melodies that extend beyond the reach of the beautiful and cutesy. This is rough and hard rockin', make no mistake. Petty has never sounded more impassioned than on most of these songs. Listen to his vocals on "The Waiting". Pleading and insistent. But, with his Dylanesque and McGuinnesque influences, he's molded and found his own, unique voice. And swagger. Listen to his warning on "You Got Lucky" and his urgent, gutteral plea on "Refugee". Petty is giving us buckets of his emotions into these songs. The greatness lies in him, and a superbly competent band that knows exactly what to do - time and time again. They are true treasures of rock. It gets my aged Seer's blood flowing once again. Something I haven't felt since the dragon got loose in my castle. It was a good thing I had garlic at my disposal.
Most of these songs are so well written that it makes your favorite Seer's Seer hat do somersaults. It is so incredulous. Everything has a place and a place for everything. No grandstanding here. The band flows - effortlessly - giving us true gems at every turn.
I must admit, I have a certain affection for "Don't Come Around Here No More". The same haberdasher made my Seer's hat as well. But I am not mad.Even if my guides debate that point.
So, the end of this petty tale is that this is certainly a very fine representation of a true, American rocker. Succinct,sonorous,satisfying. Tom Petty has rocked since this offering, but, I feel, never as hard and spectacular as he does here. But he is mega in rock music. Give a listen - then send accolades to me in care of my scottish castle.
