Born in the Dominican Republic, Michel Camilo's music is rich with Caribbean rhythms that are wedded to engaging harmonic and melodic sensibilities and draw on the whole of jazz over the 20th century. With complex chordal rhythms and melodies that evoke his homeland, Camilo reminds one of both McCoy Tyner and Chick Corea. Besides his own albums, he's also been an important presence on recordings by Paquito D'Rivera. Known for his work in the traditional trio format, Camilo has broadened the scope of the genre via his writing and arrangements, so that the three players take on qualities that are truly orchestral. Cuban drummer Horacio Hernandez and bassist Anthony Jackson are perfectly matched to Camilo's vision. Triangulo dazzles as Camilo's seven new compositions are joined by three well-chosen covers (including Dizzy Gillespie's "Con Alma"). ...you get an album like triangulo.
The playing is stellar, the writing , as usual with michel camilo recordings " a little sweet...".
Since I received this it has become one of my very favourites.
To a large extend this is due to the rhythmsection who , In my eyes outclasses Michel, and that means something ,I think...

Wonderful record period........2004-09-16

I bought this record because I'm a fan of the bass player, Anthony Jackson. But now I'm a fan of Michel and El Negro as well. What an amazing recording/performance. I especially love the mature, tasteful interplay between all three musicians. Obviously, Michel is the focal point. But the contributions of Jackson and Hernandez must not be overlooked or understated. Their performances have helped make this an instant classic. This is a mature, well-written and executed live recording from start to finish. No wonder it won a Grammy. Wonderful recording.

What a drummer!.......2002-10-10

There's an intense interplay between all three players on Triangulo. Michel Camilo plays with wonderful melodic and harmonic imagination, and truly amazing rhythmic intensity. Team him up with Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez , and explosions occur. He's like Elvin Jones and Tony Williams combined. I loved "On Fire", but this one's astonishing. Not all the numbers are fast , I guess to give you a rest , but when they crank it up it sounds like they might break something. This is a beautiful CD.

The interplay with Horacio and Anthony is simply superb. Relaxed but with plenty detail, this record its truly a genuine work of art, the result of a well honed process towards maturity...

Michel Camilo is one of the best pianist I have ever heard. But in this work he could do better. Compaired with some of his early work, this is a little sub-par.

Estupendo conscious hip-hop!.......2006-04-11

Rough Guide's "Urban Latino" is a true gift. At turns joyful, indignant, subversive and easy to dance to, this CD offers something for any music fan, whether you speak Spanish or not. I'm currently studying Spanish, and the thoughtful lyrics of these songs are inspiring me to discover the meaning of every word I hear. The songs by Colombia's Zona Marginal and Argentina's Actitud Maria Marta are particularly powerful, and I'll be purchasing their CDs. I found Zona Marginal's CD for sale at the website of an organization called "Justice for Colombia." From interviews with the group, I learned that Zona's members have received death threats from Colombia's paramilitaries for their lyrics. Fortunately, they are receiving support from concerned people around the world, and Amnesty International sponsored Zona's tour of England.

The all-female hip-hop trio Actitud Maria Marta has a similarly potent political message that urges "their fellow Latin Americans to wake up to their collective cultural identity and fight for libertad and the right to rap" (from the liner notes). Cooooool, baby, real cool.......2002-04-19

Yeah, this is a modern jazz recording, but it is a laid-back, sophisticated, mellow modern jazz recording. And none of the pieces gets more mellow than track four, "Afterthought." This is one of those, turn-the-lights-down, take-the-phone-off-the-hook recordings that needs to be listened to as dusk is slowing morphing into nighttime. And the sound? It's great -- you've not heard jazz (or any music, for that matter) until you've heard it on an SACD recording. Telarc's very fine multichannel SACD recording is the absolute best. Very highly recommended.

No vendería mi alma al diablo por el éxito...asi dice Hernaldo al comentar sobre su nueva propuesta musical...Tipo sencillo y asertivo, el cantautor nicaragüense trae bajo el brazo su nuevo disco que ha titulado "Triángulo de musgo", en el que, otra vez la devoción por el mundo femenino, es el hilo conductor de su propuesta. Escribir es una apuesta de energía física. Cuando lo hago duermo poco, pierdo peso, es una especie de locura temporal. Tales obsesiones, lo sé, deberían ser pasto de psiquiatras, pero para mí lo más complicado es darle vida a una canción y para lograrlo no puedo asumir una actitud frívola. La frivolización en la que ha caído una labor tan desgastante, enfatiza, es como si a un buen café se le quitara la cafeína: Como si en lugar de tomar café, nos dieran Decaf. No se le da la categoría que merecen a esos trabajos que, por lo menos en el plano físico, perduran. Respecto a Triángulo de musgo, que bromea, dadas las nuevas costumbres de la depilación, debiera mejor llamarse Rectángulo de musgo, la singularidad reside en que habla del enamoramiento, pero con una enorme carga erótica: Es una simetría cantada. La adicción entre dos piernas, ese primer estallido erótico que se da en una pareja. Sugiere el mundo femenino al que he recurrido siempre en mis canciones. El disco, incluso, trae un dibujo bastante elocuente sobre el tema, realizado por Aute y que muestra ese punto de perdición para los hombres. Sin falsa modestia, el cantautor aceptó también que, dado el excelente trabajo musical y lírico logrado en Triángulo de musgo, sería estimulante lograr algún reconocimiento: Si es el Grammy mejor, a ese premio se le considera como la cereza del pastel.
