Album Description

What do Ryan Adams, Trey Anastasio, Jeff Beck, Ken Boothe, Marcia Griffiths, Eric Clapton, Bootsy Collins, The Roots, Ben Harper, Terry Hall, The Skatalites, Willie Nelson, No Doubt, Bonnie Raitt, Keith Richards, Shaggy, Rahzel, U-Roy, Bunny Wailer and Rachael Yamagata have in common?

The all-star guests on "true love" range from legends Like Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, and Bonnie Raitt to younger stars including No Doubt, The Roots, and Trey Anastasio. The caliber of these collaborators reveals the impact that Toots has had on several generations of rockers and rappers, while appearances from reggae icons Bunny Wailer and Marcia Griffiths show the respect granted to the man who might be the music's greatest living vocalist. At the heart of it all is that voice - drenched in soul, rooted in gospel, and still breathtakingly powerful after almost four decades in the spotlight.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent crossover of styles and talent.......2006-03-01

Entertaining and enjoyable listening. Nice remakes of classic Reggae songs using some crossover artists.

5 out of 5 stars A straight shot of feel good music.......2006-01-13

I didn't know Toots at all, but read a magazine review and gave it a chance. Boy have I been missing some great music. I listen on my commute home and arrive feeling happy and "cool" by association. If you love blues, Buffett, or Bonnie, this sound will hit you where you live. Not just for Reggae fans. Stop reading this and buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet and Dandy! .......2005-10-01

Unlike one reviewer who sounded like he never did love Toots, this is one of my favorite albums by Toots and the Maytals and I have been listening to them for *many* years. Toots has never sounded better and he made all of the other artists who played along with him on the CD put in some of their finest performances, as well. There is hardly a track on here I don't love, but Still is Still Moving to Me, Pressure Drop, and Sweet and Dandy are some of my favorites... and Blame on Me with Rachel Yamagata (who I honestly had never heard of before) just burns me up. I love it. This is a work of art, unlike some of other compilations which I personally thought were either okay, like BB King's, or sounded like they were just inviting younger musicians to play on their albums to reach new audiences and sell more music, like Santana's. Carlos said he was trying to prove how older people could still get it down, then only invited young women to participate and shake it up. Not Toots, man, he knows what's cool and everyone was invited - young or old, you will love it!!!!

5 out of 5 stars My kind of music!.......2005-05-30

I have to admit that prior to purchasing this album I really had no knowledge of Toots' long history of making music. I always loved the sound of reggae - my dad listened to Hawaiian reggae while I was growing up - and I was ready for something fresh and new.

What I enjoy most about "True Love" is that Toots' vocals are never drowned out by his guest artists. He has a strong, almost bluesy sort of voice, and he really sounds like he enjoyed making these songs. It really amazes me that he was able to work with so many artists from such varied genres. "Pressure Drop" and "Monkey Man" easily satisfy my need for upbeat, fun, summer/spring sorts of songs while "Careless Ethiopians" and "Blame on Me" paint a landscape drenched in a darker, haunting tone. If I were to name a song that I do not care for too much, however, it would be his collaboration with Shaggy, I think mostly because Shaggy's vocals aren't too great on here.

5 out of 5 stars TOOTS GETS MY GRAMMY!.......2005-02-07

Toots is finally getting the recognition he deserves. One of the best reggae performers I've ever seen and this album is definitely one of the best. Love the cuts with Bonnie Rait and Willie Nelson and Marcia Griffiths. Toot Toot Toosie.....HELLO!

4 out of 5 stars Arch Hall Jr on CD for a limited time!.......2007-08-02

Alright everybody. This is just an amazing CD. I recently sold most of my CDs, mostly because I have everything on MP3 now. I hung on to this one and a few others though. Why? This is a true one of a kind CD that will probably be unavailable very soon. I can't believe it was made in the first place, it's marketability is practically zero.

Perhaps you grew up seeing Arch Hall Jr. movies in the drive in, or like me you saw him in Eegah from MST3K and craved some more. Arch Hall Jr. was a B movie star or wannabe star pushed in the business by his father. His father was certain that Archie was going to be the next Elvis or something. The fact that his father tried so hard to do something so impossible is amazing. Oh yeah, anyway back to this CD. It has almost every song from the Arch Hall Jr. movies. This alone is worth the price of the CD, but we're given extras too.

Oh boy are we given extras. This CD has 48 tracks. 13 of these tracks are never before released live material mostly from a Wild Guitar promotion event. The actress that plays Vickie is even there and does a short interview and comic routine with Archie. This is priceless. The CD has sound clips from various arch hall movies. This is kind of cool, but can also be seen as an interruption of the music. That's not all though. The CD just look cool. When you take out the CD there is a picture of Archie and Vickie from the climax of the Wild Guitar movie. Also included is a 28 page booklet. Not some flimsy one-sided piece of paper. The booklet is filled with rare pics of behind the scenes photos, memorabilia-yep there is memorabilia including pics of the singles that the group released. Not only that but we also get the complete Arch Hall Jr. story!- a short biography of Arch and how his father got him into the film business. Also we get "I remember the Archers" A short essay by Arch about the band's line up. There a few other quotes of Archie's as well.

Why only 4 stars? Because for no reason the song Valerie is not included on this CD. This song was from Eegah and one of my favorites. There is no reason why this song should be excluded, especially since the CD is filled with so much else material. Maybe it was a legal thing.

You have heard some of these songs from the movies no doubt if you are looking at this, but I should describe what the music sounds like. Arch is no professional musician. But he does alright. It's like 60s garage rock, long before 60s garage rock became popular. He can play a guitar and sing alright and some of the songs I like a lot. The live stuff is really good, in my opionion. Mostly cover songs of blues/rockabilly hits. And they play it pretty good. The audience really doesn't seem too into it though. They clap politely though. At one point he tries to get them to dance, apparently to no avail.

In short, pick this up while it is available. If you are an Arch Hall Jr. fan or fan of classic B movies this will be a priceless addition to your collection. They did a great job making this a collectors item instead of just a music CD.

5 out of 5 stars Not a Novelty Record.......2006-05-09

If you plan on buying "Wild Guitar" as a goof or as a funny novelty record, you are going to be very surprised. Anyone familiar with Arch Hall Jr.'s movie career will be surprised that Arch actually plays a pretty good guitar, and has some decent vocal skills. Mixed in among some great early sixties guitar rock are bits of dialogue from some of Arch's films, which is pretty fun. All of Arch's "hits" are on this disk, from "Konga Joe", "Monkey in my Hatband" and "Guitar Twist". You can tell Arch was influenced by surfer rock bands like "The Ventures", but there are also a couple cool blues tunes on here, as well as some decent ballads. Plus you get the themes and background music from most of Arch's movies. The last half of the disk is Arch and Archers performing before a crowd at a Florida Drive-In. This is gold. Arch jokes with the band, does some decent covers of rock classics like "Hello Mary Lou" and "Susie Q". What really amazed me is that you learn that Arch is only 19 years old at this point! He already had 4 movies under his belt, and was touring the country leading his own band! So however you discovered Arch Hall Jr., through MST3K or just happened to stumble across one of his flicks on late night TV, you owe it to yourself to pick this CD up. It's lots of fun, and will probably stay in your CD player for quite awhile.

5 out of 5 stars Probably will be the compilation reissue of the year.......2005-06-29

So far, no 2005 reissue has been so much fun for me as this one has. I knew I'd love it even before I received it in the mail for two main reasons. There isn't a Norton Records album I own that I don't like, and I love the films of Arch Hall Jr. This teenage rock 'n' roll cult hero is best known for his infamous caveman ressurected film "Eegah". People who enjoy that cult classic (featured on "Mystery Science Theater 3000" once) will enjoy this CD. While most of his films were unintentionally hilarious turkeys (with the exception of "The Sadist") he wasn't a half bad guitar strummer. While not on the level of Hendrix, he knew a mean lick or two, and could write catchy songs. As cool as his movie tunes are, his live stuff is even better. Obviously loving what he does, Hall plays through some originals and covers with a sense of fun not found in a good amount of today's music. If you're into pre-Beatles rock 'n' roll or are a fan of Hall's films, this is worth a purchase. I probably won't play this everyday, but when I do play it, it's still fun.

Amazon.com

Since 1995, former Byrd-man Roger McGuinn has been posting a song each month on the Folk Den (www.mcguinn.com) to celebrate and spread the traditional repertoire that launched his musical life in the '50s. Now he revisits 18 of those songs on a collaborative, home-recorded CD, singing and picking his banjo and 12-string guitar alongside stalwart folkies like Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, Jean Ritchie, Odetta, and next-generation talents Eliza Carthy and Josh White Jr. The approach is decidedly old school--warbly voiced, polite, and deferential toward their sources--and the results uneven, with high points like the ballad "Wagoner's Lad" (with Baez and Carthy) and low ones like the listless blues of "In the Evenin'" (with Seeger). These "treasures" are unlikely to win new fans for the pre-singer-songwriter age of folk music, but they will provide pleasant melodies, and maybe memories, for the already converted. --Jeffrey Pepper Rodgers

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Back to the Roots.......2004-04-08

Yes, I really enjoy to listen to this record, although it is a few steps back to what Mr. McGuinn has achieved in the past. He finally gets his chance here to sing along with the very people, that he was never allowed to share vocals with way back then. It must have hurt him badly, and this album makes up for it. Fair enough. It is sort of ironic after all, that the master mind of Acid Rock winds up singing "Whiskey In The Jar". Have a laugh!

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2003-09-22

Preservation efforts deserve respect. They typically reflect an individual's commitment, rarely are profit-driven, and ideally are educational as well as entertaining.

On the classical side, an excellent example is Itzhak Perlman's ongoing archiving of kletzmer music. On the 'musical comedy' side, there is Naxos' remarkable remastering of the 1950 D'Oyly Carte (post-war) monaural recordings of the Gilbert & Sullivan operettas.

However, both of these examples offer something 'Treasures' seriously lacks--interesting content and consistent quality. For anyone outside the extreme 'traditionalist' fold, the songs are sleep-inducing, and the track-to-track quality is shaky--a nasty surprise, given the cast of characters. Worst of all, the album lacks the one forgiving element many of us desire who are old enough to remember when the producer wasn't 'Roger' but 'Jim'--complex but focused guitar arrangements.

McGuinn should not underestimate the risk he's taking. By devoting himself so disproportionately to recording traditional tunes so that 'people remember them', he's in danger of everyone forgetting HIM. He'd be well advised to get back in the studio, plug in the Ric, find a lyricist and start creating. The personal assets he has during performances--creativity, charm and audience rapport (and good looks for a guy his age)--don't carry him here.

5 out of 5 stars McGuinn and Pete Seeger together -- You do the Math.......2002-07-27

To hear the two guys who got me into music picking and harmonizing together on Dink's Song had me unexpectedly in tears. I've been playing it nonstop and pushing it on everyone in listening distance. It's an incredible cut off an incredible album. If you like the Alan Lomax collection on Rounder, you'll love this. Just push the proper buttons on your computer and go ahead and buy it. You can also get the chords from the website and play along! Always wanted to hear these guys together. Praise God!

5 out of 5 stars I liked it better than the Grammy winner.......2002-03-24

After the Grammy's I bought Treasures from the Folk Den and the Dylan CD that was nominated. After listening to both many times, I realized that I like the McGuinn CD much better. It's beautiful music and voices with a number of spicy collaborations - Baez, Judy Collins, Pete Seeger, Odetta. Bottom line, it's a CD you can listen to over and over and never get bored. This one should have won.

Man, this is one of the best Bunny Wailer albums ever, save for blackheart man...not to mention the best tribute to Bob that ever was. You will find that only Bunny sings the backing vocals aas well as the lead, and that as Peter Tosh says "no one can back up man, I have my own band..." Bunny pulls it all together and you MUST listen to this -- it is on a constant rotation in my household, in between the recently released tosh live albums (Jamaica 1982, Boston 1976, acoustic "I am that I am," etc) and the classic bunnny tracks. BUY THIS ALBUM!!!

yes, bunny wailer has done was great albums ("blackheartman", "rootsman skanking"), however this marley tribute album is quite terrible. the tracks sound coputer generated, and they lack the feel of the great reggae. the keyboards filling in the spot of the horn sections, disgust me, do not buy this album. instead buy ealier recordings from bunny wailer.

Jon Dee Graham might be considered a late bloomer, a middle-aged songwriter who has drawn from a wealth of experience to create the richest music of a veteran career. Too often characterized as an Alejandro Escovedo sideman (in the True Believers and again in Escovedo's current band) or a Tom Waits soundalike, he shows greater creative range and emotional depth here than ever. "Something Wonderful" sounds like an open-armed embrace of all of life's riches, while the opening "Jubilee" has the melodic lilt, harmonic uplift, and guitar jangle of classic Byrds. From the deep-soul balladry of "Swept Away" to the solo acoustic intimacy of "O Dearest One," Graham leaves himself open, lays himself bare. "Remain" is as tender as a lullaby; "Beloved Garden" is as reverent as prayer. Yet the slide-driven "Holes" shows why Graham has long been in demand as a guitarist for hire, while the hard-riffing propulsion of "Bonaparte" finds him rocking as powerfully as he ever has. --Don McLeese

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Almost Live.......2006-04-30

Some of these songs I had heard back in October in an acoustic set Jon Dee performed in Chicago with fellow "Resentments" band mate Scrappy Jud Newcomb. "Swept Away" and "Tie a Knot" were the standouts of his new stuff in that show as they are on this album. That's not to shortchange the other 10 songs on the CD. They are as great and varied as those you would find on any other JDG disc. Personal, heartfelt songs with great hooks and phenomenal guitar playing. Jon Dee is never sappy but he is also never afraid to be sentimental in his songwriting as evidenced in "Oh Dearest One" and "Majesty of Love".(from "The Great Battle") Jon Dee Graham writes about love, regret, and hope as only we middle-aged men can. He knows what he's talking about.
I must say that I really like the sound of this effort as well. I have always thought that Jon Dee's studio stuff paled in comparison to what I have heard him play live. This album has an open, almost breathless sound to it as he stops one song and goes right into the next. I can't think of a better one-two punch on an album than the desperate cry of "Swept Away" followed by the hopeful "Something Wonderful". That's always been his way. Jon Dee Graham might pull the rug out from under you but, at least he'll give you a hand up.

5 out of 5 stars Best thing I've heard in a long time!.......2006-04-24

In March 2006, I had the good fortune to spend four days in Austin with my best friend, checking out more than 50 bands at the SXSW Festival. Most of the acts were new to me, and several were really good. Best of all, though, was Austin local Jon Dee Graham, who sings, plays guitar and writes songs as well as John Fogerty (maybe better). We saw Graham take a noisy barroom crowd and awe it to silence with his amazing ballad about disappearing, "Swept Away." Then he rocked us hard with "Tie A Knot" before sending us on our way with the infectiously upbeat "Something Wonderful." Those tracks are all here. Other gems from "Full" include "Amsterdam," a cheerful song about a cheerful place, "Jubilee" (which reminds me of Tommy Tutone's incredibly catchy "867-5309"), "Bonaparte" and "Holes." Graham's tunes will grab you and his lyrics will make you laugh, or think, or both. I'm writing this in April, but strongly suspect that by the end of December I'll still think of "Full" as my favorite album all year.

Happy Doing What We're Doing is an apt title for this second album by Austin's Elizabeth McQueen and the Firebrands. Not only does it convey the enthusiasm EMQ and the boys have for the British pub rock they cover here, but the song after which the disc is named was written by Nick Lowe, who is represented in one way or another by nearly half of the disc's 13 tracks. The most successful of these are the true roots-rock numbers by Ducks Deluxe ("Love's Melody"), Dave Edmunds ("A-1 on the Jukebox") and Lowe in his many incarnations as a member of Brinsley Schwarz (the title track) and Rockpile ("When I Write the Book," "You Ain't Nothin' But Fine"), a solo artist ("7 Nights to Rock"), and a writer (Dr. Feelgood's "That's It, I Quit"). And McQueen acquits herself well as a songwriter in the Lowe mode with the only original on the album, "Dirty Little Secret."

Less successful, however, are the band's forays into new wave territory. Their versions of Squeeze's "Annie Get Your Gun" and Elvis Costello's "Almost Blue" fail to convey the same passion and lack the spontaneity of the more rocking numbers. "Almost Blue" in particular falls short; McQueen and the Firebrands are best when they stick to their specialty, what she refers to as "roots pop." Perhaps it was deemed too obvious, but they missed a golden opportunity here to record "Labelled with Love" and "Radio Sweetheart." Nevertheless, Happy Doing What We're Doing is, on the whole, a pub rock tribute worth hearing, and--more than that--a successful album in its own right. --Benjamin Lukoff

4 out of 5 stars Chita Rivera & Rita Moreno just dropped dead from sheer envy.......2005-05-18

Don't be fooled by that deceptive cover shot of a nerdadelic Liz prancing around like a Method-spanker from TEENAGE ENEMA NURSES IN BONDAGE. Liz is a seasoned pro who warmed up for this record by essaying the role of Sieglinde during last year's Wagnerwankerung at Bayreuth. (I vas dere, Chahlie.) My fave track is their rendition of Graham Parker's LOCAL GIRLS. Andrew Nafziger's wah-wah pedal was a butt-scrumptious touch.

4 out of 5 stars Better Than Sgt. Pepper!!!!.......2005-03-08

All hail Pub Rock!! This 2nd offering from Ms. Mcqueen gets it done for fans and beginners alike. The band reverently cranks it out as if it's 1974 and you're standing at the bar at Dingwall's while La Liz spreads her laconic vocals over everything like honey on a waffle, tasty and sweet! Graded from 5 to 4 stars for lack of originals (get a copy of her other disc The Fresh Up Club for those). Grab a flagon of ale, turn it up, and sing along (not too out of key, please!)............

5 out of 5 stars A Fresh Voice in the Pub Rock World.......2005-02-25

I had never really heard of pub rock until this album-but now I'm a fan! Powerful vocals and a tight band combine here to make a great little album.

This celebration of one of country's most prolific and engaging songwriters is a long-time-coming labor of love for producers Mark Linn and Justin Bass. If it works, chalk it up to the range of performers and the imagination lent to sterling songs. Linn and Bass juxtapose legends like Johnny Cash--who offers a pared-down American Recordings-style take on "I Washed My Face in the Morning Dew"--and Ralph Stanley with alternative country upstarts like Kelly Willis, Syd Straw, and Calexico. Whiskeytown reinvents "I Hope It Rains at My Funeral" through Ryan Adams's scrappy vagabond's voice and winds up with a wholly faithful, wholly new classic. Joe Henry turns "Homecoming" into a trip-country dance mix á la Beck--the result is eerie, unveiling the song's most secret emotions. Only a few interpretations miss the mark: Joel R. L. Phelps's tortured vocal beats down the subtle humor of "Spokane Motel Blues," and Jonny Polonsky simply sounds lost with "Old Enough to Want (Fool Enough to Try)." Some of the best versions are the most spare and vulnerable: Mark Olson and Victoria Williams harmonize mildly on "It Sure Can Get Cold in Des Moines," and Richard Buckner is alone with just guitar on "When Love Is Gone." Few tribute albums are this rewarding, start to finish: if you're not yet a fan of Tom T. Hall's songwriting, you will be. --Roy Kasten

5 out of 5 stars tom T .......2005-09-02

tom t. hall is one of the great american artist of our time. although i've never felt he has been justly recognized. perhaps that situation has changed a bit with this cd. this is a must have cd for any serious collector of american music. kelly willis' performance on 'that's how i got to memphis' is worth the price of admission. (and could be subtitled 'that's how i got to heaven'...lol)

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic but not obvious.......2003-11-08

When I first got this CD, I was very disappointed. I wrote it off. But after a couple of years, gave it another try. It has grown on me so much that if I could only have 1 CD, this would be the one. Tom T. Hall's genius is his songwriting. Many of these interpretations exceed his performance of the songs. Give this CD a chance. It is a true gem.

5 out of 5 stars Mercy..........2003-10-19

I'm not a huge country music fan, but the tracks on this CD are breathtaking. Johnny Cash's cover will give you goose bumps; Whiskeytown's cover will make you just want to get drunk and cry all night. This CD has lead to me buying several other Tom T Hall records and enjoying them all.

4 out of 5 stars A fine tribute to a great Country singer-songwriter.......1999-07-25

Country music's great lost missing link gets the tribute cd that's been long overdue. Instead of a toothless Nashville only tribute (i.e. Arista's Haggard tribute a few years back), we get a lot of other singer-songwriters covering chestnut's from Hall's catalog. The best tracks are easily from Kelly Willis and Iris DeMent. And while a few of these 17 interpretations don't work, for the most part this is a fine tribute.

3 out of 5 stars A good but inconsistent introduction to Tom T. Hall's music........1999-07-24

"Real: The Tom T. Hall Project" brings together some of the finest country and popular music artists in the industry today, and provides an excellent cross-section of the songwriter's best work. Unfortunately, some of the performances fail to do justice to the quality of the material at hand. Highlights include Johnny Cash on "I Washed My Face in the Morning Dew," Kelly Willis covering "That's How I Got to Memphis," Calexico's version of "Tulsa Telephone Book," Syd Straw's biting rendition of "Harper Valley PTA," and the haunting, almost otherworldly sound of Mark Olson and Victoria Williams singing "It Sure Can Get Cold in Des Moines." Hall's classic "I Hope it Rains at My Funeral" also stands out as a winner. However, Iris DeMent, Joe Henry and Freedy Johnston seemed to have more difficulty in mastering the intimacy of the stories that these songs tell. The rockabilly bounce of "Don't Forget the Coffee, Billy Joe" falls flat, and "When Love Is Gone" just comes across as maudlin. Perhaps the most accurate way to describe this album is that it serves as an interesting, often brilliant, but erratic introduction to Tom T. Hall's impressive skills as a composer, which are worth hearing more extensively on his own recordings.

On Track 6, Evan sings "My Baby Left me Cause I Would not Put My Guitar down" We can all thank Evan for making the right Choice!! This album and "Rollin Thru The Night" demonstrates that Evan should be considered a guitar great. You can't beat the sound of a Tele through a Fender blackface amp!! Especially if the guitar is in Evan's hands. This album is worth it just for the tender "Day Go By".

5 out of 5 stars Real rock n roll.......1999-10-11

Evan and company rock like nobody's bidnez. When I first heard this album in the early '80's, I knew somebody still had the spirit of Bo, Link, and Hank coursing through his veins.

5 out of 5 stars Hot fire.......2007-06-21

This LP is hot fire.

In the light/dub the light is my favorite reggae album, right up there with dubwise and otherwise, but I've always wanted something else on fire from Horace Andy--the best voice in reggae.

This isn't quite In the light, but this is still amazing.

You might want to look elsewhere though for a, shall we say, more competitive pricing structure. Maybe on that apple music selling platform ;)

DISCLAIMER: If you're looking for Dancehall crap like Shaggy, this ain't it. This is the smoothest voice in reggae on extended dance mix versions...that really just means dope long reggae jams.
