Only a year after the death of Tejano queen Selena, young hopefuls clamored to inherit her title. One of the most promising--at only 12 years of age--was Jennifer Peña. She had the support of Selena's label, EMI Latin; worked with many of Selena's musicians and producer on this debut album; and was managed by Selena's father, Abraham Quintanilla, Jr. Still, the biggest question was Peña's own talent, and she delivered throughout the album. Many of the songs--"Me Piden," "Vete Con Ella," "Quisiera Verte Otra Vez"--come off as innocuous filler, but Peña and her producers hit the mark elsewhere. "Ven a Mi" offers a playful cumbia groove, and "Pura Dulzura," the album's best track and biggest hit, is an undeniably infectious treat. I've got all four of her c.ds. and they all are GREAT!!!!!

First CD from "the next Selena".......1999-10-11

A year after Selena's death, her father and manager, Abraham Quintanilla introduced a new potential star for the Tejano music world. Jennifer Pena is lead vocals to the band "jennifer y los jetz" (think Selena y los Dinos, though after 92'she became a solo artist). It's only inevitable that Jennifer should be compared to Selena, given the connections and similarities. The music is much like what you would find on any of Selena's albums, "ven a mi" is strangely reminicent of "bidi bidi bom bom", considering that they are two totally different songs. At 12 yrs though, this girl demonstrates vocals like no other, and great maturity for her age. "vete con ella", and "pura dulzura" are best examples of this. This album, despite the great vocals, isn't quite at the level of her peers, but in a few years Jennifer may possibly find the success that Selena had, and maybe would have had in the English market.
