If you love the "Sweet-House" you must have this collection. It's a "PRECIOUS" work. This box is a treasure that I keep in my heart and my ears too. Solid gold. Sober gold and silver finishes for a collection of gems with the stamp of two heavyweights of New York's house scene: Kenny 'Dope' Gonzalez and 'Little' Louie Vega, i.e. Masters At Work. Two lusciously presented box sets, which each contain jewels for the enjoyment of modern music lovers. In this exhaustive tenth anniversary recompilation a large part of their work is brought together, both their own compositions and their remixes 'to order'. The first box features their work under the alias Nuyorican Soul, one of the outstanding examples of the fusion of jazz, Latin sounds and House, with classics such as 'The Nervous Track'. With regard to their work as remixers, the list of artists favoured with the MAW touch has no end. Highlights include their reworks for Daft Punk, Chic, Roni Size Reprazent, Karen Ramirez, Ultra Nate, Jerald Daemyon, Tony Touch, Mel B. and many more... Real House, Latin Style, Jazz and other delights. The amazing track "Dancing in Outer space - Atmosfear" it's a great remix and the beautiful "Runaway - Nuyorican Soul feat. India" and "MAW Expensive - Masters At Work" is incredible the most excellent track. This collection (Part One & Part Two) contains the essential house music that makes you relax and dance. Masters At Work are "SOLID GOLD".

The Masters also deserve to be compared with Larry Levan, the most influential dance music practitioner of the eighties. Vega's four-and-a-half year residency at the Sound Factory Bar provided the dance music underground with a crucial lifeline given that the Shelter was about to close and Body & Soul had yet to open. And in terms of remixing and production, MAW's efforts in the nineties have surpassed those of Levan in the eighties. Like Levan, they have survived the cutthroat climate of the studio for a long ten years. Like Levan, they have moved from the world of remixing to the universe of production. And like Levan, they have revolutionized the way people listen to music, introducing a series of sounds that have become so entrenched in the dance psyche that it's hard to remember that night-world didn't always sound like this.

Most importantly, 'Little Louie 'Vega and Kenny 'Dope' Gonzalez have maintained an elaborate and unswerving eclecticism at the heart of their work. As with Levan, this hybridity has nothing in common with the superficial skimming of multicultural tourists, whose level of engagement begins and ends with the casual flick of a download button. No, MAW's diversity is grounded in a set of serious musical roots, and it has evolved in conjunction with the kaleidoscopic populations of New York's night network. There are many fine compilations out there that are a pleasure to listen to. But there aren't many that will stand the test of time. This is one that will. This collection testifies to the mystery of ART and artworks whose life-span is determined by the aura of that which has no name. Some call it 'orginality'. Some call it 'authenticity'. Some call it 'a voice'. Whatever. Kenny and Lil Louie must love, I mean LOVE, what they do to a level not matched by others in the business. The collection packaged here is more than a sampler of what-has-been. In their inimitable way, K and L have bent time to bring back that which never left. Who'd have thunk of doing a George Benson to House without any of that trademark Housebeat, nice tho' that is, and still make great Housemuzik? It is the mark of a great artist, made great by the love he has for his medium, to throw in the unexpected and make it sound like it was the most natural thing in the world. (It is only the lesser ones who are obsessed with "experimentation" and end up botching what would have been a passably palatable product.) It is somewhat ironic that the art that is most democratic in form and appeal should be given an aspect of perfection by two artists who are so thoroughly ARISTOCRATIC in taste. Taste is, in the end, everything.

For those who hasnt experienced these two puerto ricans.. you are making a big mistake. MAW consists of Little Louie Vega and Kenny"dope"Gonzales. For the house genre, MAW has ment alot, and they have kept The "nostalgic" house alive by remixing pop and other house music to their and our deliberate taste. They have worked with many many artist from the old times like George Benson and the great timbal percussionist Tito puente (R.I.P) and many others. People who has house genre as fave should not miss MAW. theire essential for house! These cd`s delivers pure nostalgic house. By listening to it, it reminds you of the old era of soul music, with new generation music like daft punk, mel-B and Eternal. It also contain lots of music from Little Louie`s own Nyorican Soul project that some of you may have bumped in to. so this is pure house running with rythmic elements of acoustic sound. House lover must fetch this essential reproduction and remixes. Its allready a milestone for my world of music! Its MAW, and its The best house ever remixed! All respect to little louie and Kenny Dope. you take house seriously and make it real!

Lovely! Great merengue.......2002-02-07

The Merenhits series released yearly by J & N Records is always a well organized selection of songs that have become hits during the year. This edition- Merenhits 2000 is a great production from start to finish with a variety of different styles of merengue which definitely makes the cd a good buy for even the most selective merengue followers. The cd is very upbeat and definitely can liven up any party in a dull moment. Also, it includes two bachatas, one by Frank Reyes and the other by Los Toros Band which is nice treat. If you are looking for a merengue compilation that is danceable or just nice to listen to Merenhits 2000 should definitely be on your list. Enjoy!

With 14 good dance tracks, this is an excellent compilation. The standouts for me are the selections by La Makina, Tony Tún Tún, Rikarena, my favorite, the terrific Zafra Negra, and a fabulous merengue/hip hop blend by Proyecto Uno, "Candela", which is not only a super dance track but very funny too. If you love merengues, but aren't familiar with all the many individual groups, a compilation is the way to go. Put this on and dance your heart out...do you want to firm up that body ? this is the fun way to exercise !

Salsa and Merengue supreme!.......2002-02-25

This is a great compilation cd of the best of tropical music-Salsa and Merengue in year 2000. The songs on the cd were most likely chosen based on market popularity and surely enough the compilation is excellent. I browsed at the line up of songs prior to making the purchase and I instantly new that I had a gem in my hands just waiting to be played. If you are an avid fan of Salsa and Merengue you will definitely recognize all the songs and if you are new to both genres, I am quite sure you will be impressed with the selection. The cd has cuts from some of the modern greats of tropical music such as Son by 4, Eddy Herrera, Huey Dunbar and many more. This is the kind of cd that can be played through and through and also the music will inspire you to dance wherever you are. No regrets here. I highly recommend this lively compilation cd.

Spicy "must have" for your salsa collection!.......2004-11-22

It literally took me months to find this "Salsa En La Calle Ocho" CD from 2000. I must say it was well worth it! This was the one album people kept telling me to purchase when I was on the dance floor in my intermediate salsa class. I can see why. This is a great cross section of sounds, artists and flavors. It's a great introduction for people looking to flesh out their latin music collection.

The artists on this album are: Frankie Ruiz, Tito Rojas, Adolescent's Orquesta, Frankie Negron, Alquimia, Servando y Florentino, Maelo, Anthony Cruz, Charlie Cruz, Raulin Rosendo, Dominic and Liliana. We get to hear Puerto Rican and Venezuelan salsa, as well as the Nuyoriquen (New York-born Puerto Rican) styles often heard in the clubs of the East Coast. (Though, this album is a cross section of music taken from the annual Calle Ocho salsa festival in Miami, Florida).

My favorite cuts are, by far, "Me Nego" (by the legendary and well-respected Venezuelan group, Adolescent's Orquesta), "Una Fan Enamorada" (by the Venezuelan duo Servando y Florentino), and "Bombon de Azucar" (the instaneously catchy and infectious tune by Charlie Cruz).

A Note: You are going to want to head to a salsa club immediately or organize a big salsa party after listening to this CD, guaranteed!

One more for my "Calle Ocho Collection" !.......2000-03-19

I've collected all of the Calle Ocho CD's since they put them out in the market and I have to say, I just couldn't wait for this "Millenium First"! This one really rocks. Well deserved Frankie Ruiz flashback (rest in peace "mi hermano"--we miss you ! ). Tito Rojas as always--Salseando and many others. If you are a true salsero (ra), make sure to add to your collection. Enjoy ! Take my word for it.

Best Merengue Compilation.......2002-08-30

This is the best merengue compilation you can buy. Of course, you can always burn a better one! The best tracks on this CD are "Menea" and "Me mata la pena". In my humble opinion they are even better than the hits of Elvis Crespo. The music just makes you want to swirl.

A hot Merengue anthology.......2001-08-13

"Merengue en la Calle Ocho 2000" is an anthology CD of 12 different Merengue songs by 12 different acts. This CD is hot: full of the dynamic rhythms and driving percussion that characterizes this form of Latin music. One curious point: with the exception of Maria Alejandra, it appears that all the acts on this CD feature male vocalists.

This is a strong CD in general, but my favorites include the following: Tonny Tun Tun's "Caminando," which features a particularly aggressive vocal style; Ronny Soler's seductive performance on "Como Duele"; the surprisingly gentle-sounding lead vocals on K-Libre's "La Quiero y La Quiero"; Proyecto Nuevo's fun "Papi Chulo"; and of course, Maria Alejandra's sensual, passionate rendition of "Me Equivoque." If this CD doesn't get you hot, you'd better check your pulse!

A good sampler of the state of Merengue.......2000-06-21

Merengue, a dance music primarily from the Dominican Republic, is gaining in popularity and is now often heard in Salsa clubs. This cd wouldn't be my pick as a first introduction to Merengue, but it does include a nice set of recent hits and they're all danceable. The first cut (Caminando by Tonny Tun Tun) is my favorite on here by far. It sounds a little like reigning prince of Merengue Elvis Crespo and there's a good reason for that: Crespo co-wrote the song! The song by La Makina is great fun too, and also highly danceable and includes some sly references to other performers. If you enjoy Los Hermanos Rosario, you will note Tono Rosario's song here as well.
