4 out of 5 stars Innovative music.......2007-06-03

I have been listening to such contemporary artists as Bond, Yanni, Taleinsin Orchestra,... so I am not a new comer to contemporary fusion classical music. If I had listened to this CD when it first came out almost 10 years ago, I would probably have given it a 5. I am only giving it a four now (maybe a 3.5?) because there are simply other better albums out there - most of the songs here are more classically influenced than its purported to be. Also, while Vanessa-Mae is an accomplished violinist, she is not the most spectacular violnist. At times, she lackes the energy to propell her music to the next level. However, all in all, an enjoyable album, although nothing ground-breaking.

1 out of 5 stars Slop from a slapper.......2005-03-01

This terrible and dull album launched the career of Über-nothing violinist, Vanessa Mae.

It is hard to describe the depth of the level to which this album stoops to be "popular". Low brow? You bet! Exploitative? Oh yeah! Dumbed down Classical Music? Well, that's what we've got here!

Value of this album? Hard to say. I am sure that Vanessa's parents and agent are happy with this prosaic product.

Very dumbed down dumb music - for the legions of philistines and musically naive of the world.

In one word, a "dud".

2 out of 5 stars HO HUM --- REALLY NOT INTERESTING AT ALL.......2003-07-11

As violin technique goes, there is not much here in evidence to get all fired up about. She is an adequete violinist who does just fine with the material she is given, but the only people who are going to think that she is a violinist for the ages are people who don't know anything about violin playing.

That being said, this album had the potential to be interesting, except that the arrangements of Mike Batt are about as flat as one can get. This album seems to be more about Mike Batt's ego than about Vanessa Mae, as Mike perform, conducts, composes & produces practically every piece. This would be fine if the end product was remotely interesting, but of it sounds like it should be background music. The Bach arrangement, with gratuitous techno-pop flourishes thrown in at every opportunity, just bogs down in an effort to be "innovative." Most of Batt's compositions leave no impression whatsoever.

Any lunatic who puts this crossover album in the classical category truly needs to go back to Music Appreciation 101, to be reminded of what classical music is. File this one in the Fluffy Boring Pop category and forget about it.

5 out of 5 stars Classical With a Twist.......2003-07-01

The first notes of Vanessa Mae's The Violin Player sound like a dramatic beginning to a classical composition, but it's not. This album in fact is anything but traditional classical. It's unique, creative, energetic and alive and I give Vanessa props for being brave enough to come out with it. It's hard to be different. The fact that Vanessa did make the music and did it so well says that she's a true artist, something sadly lacking in a world where technical mastery is considered more important than artistic invention. This is a fantastic, fun album that you'll want to listen to again and again, the music hitting something within you and bringing all sorts of energy you didn't know you had bubbling to the surface. If you won't buy it for that reason, then buy it for it's historical significance. It's already plain to me, Vanessa Mae with this album changed the one sided face of classical music forever.

4 out of 5 stars Highly Listenable.......2002-11-13

Let's get this straight upfront: Vanessa Mae is a good violin player, but I've heard plenty better in the classical world today. You buy this CD not for Mae's technique as a violinist (frankly, I'd give her just a 6 or 7 out of 10), but for her innovation - her ground-breaking album that blends the old-style classical music with pop/techno/jazz, and gives that genre of music (which had there for a while even before Mae) the kind of visibility that it did not use to have. This album is novel and upbeat, and is highly listenable both to people who like classical music and those who find it intimdating (or boring). Would especially recommend this to people in their 20s and 30s.

5 out of 5 stars Great stuff!.......2002-10-24

Erich kunzel has recorded a wonderfully exhilerating item this time! Wonderfully exhuberant is mild compared to the lively playing Kunzel always gets from this great orchestra! Arrangements are mostly by Tommy Newsome who knows how to write charts of varying degrees of excellence, particularly the winsome "Girl from Ipanema" which compliments the lyrics endless reflections on a beautiful, bikini-clad young woman. "Sweet and Gentle" is a saucy number while Eric Knight, the only arranger to get the Boston Pops under Fiedler to swing to new heights, contributes an unforgettably boisterous account of "Lambada." The sound is full of punch and contrast. And Doc Severinsen plays in "Virgen" a marvelous soloistic stratospheric account. My advice is to buy this immediately. It's one hot album!

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful arrangements of music from all over the world........2001-10-26

Telarc and Eric Kunzel never fail to amaze at the quality of their selections.

Even tough some of the arrangements here have a little too much
fanfare at the start they are still great to listen to.

Most of these melodies you have heard them at least once in you life. And they are reproduced here with the Kunzel magic.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful collection of Music.......2001-10-26

A Beautiful collection of music from all over the world.
(latin world that is)

I little grandiose on some selections (that's kunzel) but GREAT nonetheless.

5 out of 5 stars Great single disc Champs comp from the Album Collection + 10.......2004-12-17

If you can't find the Challenge Album Collection 2 CD set on One Way or if you have it and want a best of comp that is mainly from the material on the albums, this is a great single disc that is mainly culled from the album collection except for 10 additional songs including their versions of Istanbul, Rebel Rouser, La Cucaracha to name a few. The songs that appear on this disc culled from the album collection are the cream of the crop when it comes the Champs and as such, this earns 5 stars. If I were to recommend any of their albums for those who want to go further, I'd recommend "Go Champs Go" and "Everybody's Rockin'" which do remain in print as a twofer on Ace and are both equally great but this is the cream of the crop.

This is another brutal metal assault CD by BNS. They are a perfect combination of metal and heavy rock. I can't help bangin' my head everytime I listen to it. They are a must see live band. I think they have a great heavy unique sound. They also actually know how to play their instruments -- great solos, great drums, and love the knarly lead vocals. The only band I have ever traveled six hours to see. If radio would stop stooping done to coorporate interests and sucky pop metal, these guys would rule.

5 out of 5 stars Tequila wets your appetite for old style rock.......2006-11-27

A fine display of the style of songs Brand New Sin brings to fans at
their 'live' shows. This is a 'bare bones' type of recording not for all
those 'perfect, clean & tweaked' studio kind of listeners. For those folks
who don't like the production -'You don't get it!' Brand New Sin set out
to give fans a recording they can play, learn the words and come to a show
and sing along and it all sounds the same. This band is making it's mark
at every live show. 'See The Sun' and the song with their 1st video from
this cd 'Motormeth' are fan favorites. The remake of 'House of the Rising Sun' recorded by many '50's & '60's folk singers and a hit for Britian's
Animals in the mid '60's has a little twist to it and is a great treat at
a live show.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent follow up to RFD.......2006-11-27

This album shows the growth of the band over there 4 year career. Music wise much more technical with more maturity. Excellent guitar work with very catchy riffs. Have seen BNS live around 25 times and every time they get better. What you here on there albums is what you get live. They do not layer and make music they can not play live. This is a kick you in the butt album and makes them a better band.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent follow up to "Recipe of Disaster"!!!.......2006-11-04

Is different, leave behind the south influences to more hard rock, but rocks in the same way!! The guitar work is great, the vocals outstanding and the drums really good too!!! Recommended!!!

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Wes album.......2005-10-28

I've been a fan of Wes since the 60s and I saw him live. I've heard everything he's ever recorded and own most of it. I fell in love with this album when it was issued and it's my favorite. Yes there are strings on it but as soon as they shut up and Wes plays it is heaven. There isn't a bad song on it. My favorite Wes tune is The Thumb and I think it features his best solo ever. Eight choruses of pure imagination. So, if you can ignore the intrusive strings, which really aren't on it that much, I think you'll like this album. It's very mellow and laid back and Wes really swings.

4 out of 5 stars A South-Of-The-Border SHOT OF WES (Lime Wedge Optional).......2005-05-26

I've never understood those so-called "purists" who raise a ruckus with shouts of "SELL OUT!" and "INAUTHENTIC!" as soon as a musician sails into previously uncharted waters. They called out the dogs when Richard Carpenter closed out 'GOODBYE TO LOVE' with a loud fuzz guitar solo. (He was later credited with having invented the "power ballad" formula with this blasphemy!) They were ready to crucify Bob Dylan when he started singing about Jesus with SLOW TRAIN COMING. (Never mind that it happened to be the freshest, most exciting and heartfelt music he'd created in years!) When WES MONTGOMERY allowed his innovative Jazz guitar style to explore modern Pop pieces, his fans began to abandon ship in droves. And when he went so far as to...(dare I even say it?)...add a dollop of strings on the TEQUILA set, they were ready to torpedo his boat themselves. He had "sold out" they said. Sold out to what? I'll tell you : MORE great music!

In the informative booklet notes, Montgomery's fellow Jazz guitarist, Steve Khan writes, "Like most Jazz fans, I prefer albums on which the tracks are timed at six minutes or more; anything less than that usually means limited space for improvising. But perhaps looking at the art of recording only in this manner causes one to miss works of extraordinary beauty and grace. TEQUILA is just such a recording." Khan later (courageously?) confesses that 'MIDNIGHT MOOD' is "one of the most beautiful pieces Montgomery ever recorded." Here's a person mature enough to realize that great music is great music, at six minutes, or less; with or without strings. It just so happens that my favorite track here is probably 'LITTLE CHILD (DADDY DEAR)', the shortest at just two and a half minutes, WITH strings (which only enhances the moving, melancholic melody.)

TEQUILA has a slightly Latinized feel to it, thanks to the title track, the inclusion of Antonio Carlos Jobim's classic, 'INSENSATEZ (HOW INSENSITIVE)', and especially the conga playing of Ray Barretto on half of the tracks. But make no mistake about it, this is genuine Jazz - there's Grady Tate on drums and the legendary Ron Carter on the stand-up bass (love that rhythmic "thumping" on 'WIVES AND LOVERS', which stays with me for hours!) This is wonderful stuff, and the sparingly used Claus Ogerman strings do not detract from the mood, but highlight it. As if all that wasn't enough, TEQUILA sports one of the coolest Jazz album covers ever conceived (right up there with Metheny's, AMERICAN GARAGE.)

WES MONTGOMERY was one of the most influential guitarists in the world of Jazz. By all accounts, he was a very classy and humble man. He certainly had good taste and knew good music. His musicianship elevated everything he played; transforming even minor Pop hits into compelling masterpieces. So smooth he was, but never sleepy! And this set is no exception. So what if this isn't Wes Montgomery poured straight from the bottle? Some folks like to add orange juice to their liquor and call it a Tequila Sunrise. Others prefer a mixture of lime juice and salt. They call that a Margarita. On TEQUILA, Wes didn't pour his guitar straight from the bottle, but stirred in some congas and some strings. It doesn't matter because, in short : if it says "WES MONTGOMERY" on the label, you can be sure that it's a damn fine drink. Uhm...no...that's not right. I mean, if it says "Wes Montgomery" on the COVER, you can be sure that it's damn fine music. Yeah, that's it...damn fine MUSIC!

5 out of 5 stars Every time ..........2004-12-31

Every time I put a Wes record in my player I have to write a review here on Amazon. I have to say to the world how big was Wes talent and artistry. I have to shout out loud how much I love Wes music and how much I dig his improvisational skills and personality. I'm saying that Wes even if he's respected everywhere in the world actually he is still incredibly underrated. Every cat can tell you how big was Trane, Bill Evans or Miles and I obviously agree, don't get me wrong. But Wes? Can we talk a little bit about WES??? It seems that almost only guitarists consider him as he should be considered as one the overall best jazzmen of all times. I mean in the first best five probably. His musicality was a marvel from mother nature!!! His music has always been intense, deep, groovin and entertaining something you can't say of every cat's music ... His solos are incedibly touching, challenging and light years ahead. I mean, really no guitar player has ever come near Wes artistry except maybe George Benson but only in few occasions. Tequila is a favourite of mine in Wes's discography. It is one of the albums in which Wes had the best sound, full, big, touching, surrounding. The program is very very nice, 100% Wes. I mean, I love Riverside albums too obviously, but Verve's material is enormously underrated. verve's album contains some of the best Wes music ever. Insensatez, What the world, all the tunes contained in Verve albums are Wes unforgettable interpretations believe me. I'm listening to this album now for the thousand time, trying to imagine Wes playing with his thumb and smiling and enjoying music and the art of improvisation ... I mean, Wes. W-E-S !!! Every time I'm into another player that I love and listen to Wes I immediatly become again a Wes addicted because his music is .... special. Every time I play a Wes record I think that never ever will be another talent like him. And that there never has been. That will never be better music .. Let me say this. Wes has been one of the greatest music talents ever, together with Bird and few more. I really don't think I'm exaggerating .. Oh Wes !!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Music like good Tequila.......2000-11-18

For years, for decades, Wes's Verve records have been criticized by so-called jazz purists. Praising his Riverside output, they didn't come to grasp with the fact that what Wes did on Verve was FUSION, in the truest sense of the word. I prefer this masterpiece of laconic, sparse, deceptively simple guitar music to the tinny and sometimes tedious sounds he released on Riverside. Just one telling example: take the title track, on which he turns the Champs' pop instrumental into a stark, dynamic masterpiece. The band are excellent, too: the combination drums - congas (played by the Great Barretto himself!)works out splendidly.Best US jazz guitar album ever?

4 out of 5 stars Standard Montgomery Verve.......2000-01-04

If you're a fan of Wes's Verve sessions, this is another one to add to your collection. For those who know Wes only as a be-bop guitarist, this album might surprise you. This album has never been critically acclaimed (and I do find it a bit uneven in quality) but for my money, the greatest guitar solo I've ever heard on a jazz record is on his version of "What the World Needs Now." I've actually never heard this CD--I own the LP, so I'm only commenting on the music itself.
