5 out of 5 stars a resplendent recording.......2000-06-18

My favorite living singer, Hvorostovsky's baritone is like dark honey and in this recording of mostly 18th century arias he shines. There is an expressive purity to his voice that will fill your soul with peace and harmony. The final track, Stradella's "Pieta, Signore" is sublime, and it's worth having this CD in your collection if only for this one piece.

3 out of 5 stars Not the finest.......2000-06-05

These are wonderful old arias, but it is too bad that Hvorostovsky cannot alter his style convincingly enough to carry them off. His Italian diction is somewhat sloppy at times - dropping the end of words. Listen to first time he sings "languisce il cor" in "Caro mio ben", and you will hear "languisce il co" Also, his aspirated breaths interfere with the music quite often. He begins the first aria "Vittoria mio core" not with a note but with a grunt.

These failings do not affect the entire recording - the first Gluck aria, O del mio dolce ardor is beautifully and tenderly sung. That is what makes it a pity - it is uneven.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful change of pace for our Siberian nightingale.......1999-06-06

'Mr. Hvorostovsky, you've done it again!' This time the superlative young baritone of our time takes the old chestnuts so familiar to voice students and treats them with the love and respect they deserve. Hvorostovsky's wonderful tone, breath control and attention to phrasing should make him a model for the people who usually sing these songs. Fine interpretations indeed.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty Recording of Italian Belcanto.......2005-10-19

Margiono's specific timbre is beautifully underscored by her four partners. The recording is a nice and unusual addition to
the current recordings of 'Arie Antiche' by Bartoli, Bayo, Vargas, Bruson and Bergonzi.
However, The Margiono Quintets Producers might consider a more original selection of Arie Antiche. Parisotti's collection
contains more than 84 items to choose from.
Only four of the 17 pieces on the CD are not in Schirmers selection of 24 Italian Arias - standard literature for any student of belcanto.
Ladies and Gentlemen - please surprise us ... !

5 out of 5 stars Discover unknown Vivaldi!.......2000-02-29

Vivaldi's operas are not well represented on disc. I'm aware of only three, one of which, L'Olympiade, is a really subpar live recording. So, to say that this recording is the best Vivaldi opera recording out there is really not to say much. What needs to be said is this: Ottone in Villa is not only the best Vivaldi opera recording currently in the catalogue, but it is a stellar recording period. First of all, the musical material is highly enjoyable, combining catchy tunes with imaginative instrumental accompaniment (you will recognize the famous Vivaldian flair in many violin passages). Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, the cast is superb. Whether or not the opera itself is a veritable baroque masterpiece, the singers certainly make is sound like it is! The structure of the opera is simple: da capo - secco - da capo, no duets or ensembles, except for the 54-second final "chorus" in which all five singers sing a total of four lines in unison. But the result is far from boring (although, if you're new to baroque opera you may want to start with something like Handel Giulio Cesare or Rodelinda). Within the limits of the form, all five singers exhibit a remarkable range of expression. Monica Groop is perfectly at ease in the "pants" role of a naive king who is kept in the dark by his scheming mistress. The mistress is played by Susan Gritton who adds a mischievous sparkle to her sweet soprano voice. Nancy Argenta fills another "pants" role, presenting a somewhat confused character of Caio who keeps vying for the wrong girl but ultimately ends up with the right one. Sophie Daneman's seraphically pure voice is perfect for the character of Tullia who spends most of the opera pretending to be a man. The sole voice of reason in this madhouse is Ottone's confidant Decio played with gusto by Mark Padmore, but even Decio ends up being fooled. You can tell that the story was intended to be droll, but it is droll to a modern listener not because of a captivating plot but despite it. This is a stunning example of how an exciting cast of singers can turn almost anything into an exciting listening experience. gkolomietz@yahoo.com

5 out of 5 stars Stunning Performances, Superb Quality.......2005-06-07

If you had never before heard of the composers represented on this disc – de Milanes, Marin, Hidalgo, Martin y Coll, Durón, Cabanilles, del Vado – you may be excused: late 17th century Spanish composers do not feature widely in today’s concert programs! But Jordi Savall and his team (here consisting of his wife Monserrat Figueras together with Ton Koopman, Hopkinson Smith and Christophe Coin, all famous soloists in their own right) were determined to demonstrate that Spain was not the musical wilderness which it is sometimes represented as being and recorded (in September 1976, at the Protestant Church in Séon in Switzerland) this selection of excerpts from “zarzuelas” and secular songs of the period. As Tess Knighton points out in her notes, the Spanish music of the period was heavily influenced by what was going on in the rest of Europe, especially Italy and France, but it is still possible to recognize a certain Spanish style; in this respect, she compares Spain with England.

The program, originally released on EMI as an LP, is rather brief – a mere 47 minutes – but this is balanced by its superb quality. The young Montserrat Figueras gives stunning performances of the vocal pieces, the purity and clarity of her voice, the delightfulness of her ornamentation and the authenticity of her diction all contributing to some fascinating listening. And all this is complemented by some glorious instrumentals, amongst which Ton Koopman’s harpsichord pieces by Cabanilles deserve special mention. This is a digitally remastered analogue recording, but the audio sound quality is better than that of many digital recordings: there is absolutely no hissing or other noise, and there is a fulness of detail here which does the engineers proud. Virgin Classics deserve much praise for this re-issue and that of other early Hespérion XX recordings.

5 out of 5 stars Hesperion XX,an ensanble of first class soloists.......2000-03-24

This is a great recording by Hesperion XX. Jordi Savall, called for an ensanble of first class instrumentalists. Some of the most prominent scholars, perform in this recording. Lutenist,Hopkinson Smith,a graduate from Harvard, is today one of a respected lute soloist.Ton Koopman plays the harpsichord in this recording, he is today conductor of one of the foremost early music group around, the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra. He plays in this recording three solo pieces by the Spanish composer,Juan Bautista Cabanilles.Christophe Coin, plays the viola da gamba,he is also a first class cellist in field of early music performance,he has performed with groups such as the Academy of Ancient Music, under C.Hughwood,Mr.Cin displays himself in this recording, with his performance of "La Folia" a set of variations in a popular tune by Martin y Coll.Soprano Moserrat Figueras was splendid in this recording too, this was her first colaboration with Jordi Savall. My favorite track were#3"Peynandose Estaba un Olmo".The quality of the recording is great for a re-issue.The only problem was that the liner notes failed to tell about the performers.

George Frideric Handel (1685 -1759), Arias for Cuzzoni. Lisa Saffer, soprano; Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, conducted from the harpsichord by Nicholas McGegan. Recorded November 1990 at Skywalker Sound, Nicasio, California. Released as Harmonia Mundi HMU 907036; also available on HMX 2907171.74. Total time: 72'19".

Francesca Cuzzoni (d. 1770) was one of two Italian soprano “prima donnas” that Handel kept busy at his opera houses in London during the 1720’s and 1730’s. As one can well imagine, the two of them were not on the best of terms, and it is said that it came to blows on stage, something that was made fun of a little later in Gay’s “Beggar’s Opera”. But despite the shortcomings in her character, Cuzzoni appears to have been a wonderful singer, eliciting from some bright spark the memorable phrase: “Damme, she has a nest of nightingales in her belly.” Handel penned a large number of his finest arias with Cuzzoni in mind, and the most difficult decision facing Lisa Saffer and Nic McGegan when they planned this CD of “Arias for Cuzzoni” must have been, which ones to leave out. In the end they made, I think, a fair choice, with two arias each from “Rodelinda” and “Ottone”, three of Cleopatra’s airs from “Giulio Cesare in Egitto”, and single numbers from “Ricardo Primo”, “Scipione”, “Tamerlano”, “Alessandro” and “Flavio.” A further great decision they made was to include the preceding recitative before each aria, thus creating a little bit of context: Handel’s da capo arias were not really intended for a 72 minute recital by a single singer, and the recitatives provide small breaks and introduce the listener at the same time to the situation and the emotions involved in the following aria.

As with David Thomas on his “Arias for Montagnana”, there have been differences of opinion concerning Lisa Saffer’s performance here; and as there, I think this is probably just a matter of taste: personally, I enjoyed Lisa Saffer’s singing greatly, although I did detect some hardness of timbre in exposed passages. Ms Saffer is technically brilliant, but her voice is relatively small, so that I felt she had to replace emotional intensity with brilliant modulation and ornamentation. I compared the “Giulio Cesare” arias on the disc with Roberta Alexander’s performance with the Concentus Wien under Harnoncourt, recorded a couple of years earlier, and came to the conclusion that Lisa Saffer could not match Ms Alexander’s emotional expressivity. On the other hand, Saffer’s voice seems to be more appropriate to the “early music” style – and the McGegan disc is, from the standpoint of both orchestra and engineering, at least head and shoulders better than the Harnoncourt.

Even those who are not enamoured of Ms Saffer’s voice tend to admit that the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra gives a marvellous performance on this CD. The music is full of Handelian esprit and is captured more or less perfectly, including solos by Stephen Schulz, transverse flute, and Judith Linsenberg, recorder, and not to forget Nic McGegan himself at the harpsichord providing great continuo and sometimes more. It is a measure of the quality of the disc that I have just listened to it three times in a row and found myself loving it more each time.

I have been listening to film scores for years. For the majority of those years many of us have had to settle for the selections that made it to the album from the actual film score. Contented? Not Quite! Thanks to the emergence of the film score as a legitimate cousin to `Classical' symphonic and/or choral compositions we are now getting recordings of `complete scores.' I think this can be attributed to the compositional and orchestral genius of Bernard Herrmann through his simple yet effective mastery of the human emotion. Turning that picture 180 degrees, I now find myself reciprocating and exploring music and compositions before the birth of the cinema. This CD: "Handel: Agrippina - Highlights" is a bit of a disappointment. I am no longer settling for just a section of the pie. I'll admit that the cover of this CD is rather appealing, but after listening to the music and reading the reviews I am left with a feeling of the glass being half empty. Highlights leave me yearning for the deleted parts and that brings me full circle and still not satisfied.

2 out of 5 stars No highlights, please!.......2000-06-04

I don't know why Philips released this disc (to attract those who have the McGegan's complete recording?)! I am principally against highlights, but this CD made me particularly angry: to compress this 3 hour humorous operatic masterpiece into a short (mere 57 min.) recital was a barbarian act. "Agrippina" is one of these Handel's operas which doesn't work without recitativi. One can argue that no opera really does, but in this case it is the quality of libretto - one of the best Handel ever worked with - that makes "Agrippina" such a delightful listening from start to finish. Here both elements of opera - words and music (and what music it is!) are wonderfully balanced, something that cannot be said about many of Handel's musically great works. Imagine listening to the "Marriage of Figaro" in highlights only! I am not afraid of using this comparison, because "Agrippina"'s sparkling recitativi often reminded me of the Mozart's masterpiece.

The selection of arias on this disc makes me wonder about this failed release even more. There are at least two inexcusable omissions which would add ca. 11 minutes to the meagre total timing. One of them is Agrippina's aria "Pensieri, voi mi tormentate" (2nd act), 'broken' by a short recitativo. The aria is one of the central points of the opera: Agrippina's scheme 'lies in great peril' and she summons her 'cunning wiles' to stand by her side and help her succeed in her plan. This aria wouldn't be out of place in a collection of the greatest operatic 'invocations', such as Medea's (Charpentier), Circe's (in Leclair "Scylla et Glaucus") or Armida's (Lully, Gluck), to name just a few. Musically it is also one of the greatest moments of the opera, with a chilling orchestral accompaniment and a lovely oboe obligato. The other omission is von Otter's cameo appearance as the goddes Juno. This disc would certainly sell a few copies more if von Otter's short (3 min.) aria was included here - there are always numerous collectors who buy recordings exclusively for the tracks featuring their beloved artists. They will have to buy the complete set and that's probably what Philips wanted to achieve by this odd omission.

To sum up - I don't understand why this great recording of the baroque masterpiece has been released in this flawed form. No Handel fan can afford to be without a complete set, be it Gardiner's or McGegan's. If you want to limit yourself to this disc, imagine once again what you would miss having Mozart's Figaro in highlights only.

And just a last word - I reviewed this disc without actually listening to it! I know the complete recording and I marked the libretto with the highlights' track listing. I checked many internet sites to make sure that the two discussed omissions are really NOT included here. If I am wrong, I would be grateful for a correcting note.

As some really interesting McGegan recordings silently disappear, buy it NOW, without hesitation.

The concept is lavish. We see how Handel's pen was controlled by the artists' personality. David Thomas, e.g., flies down to the abyss opened by Handel's music to the possibly plutonian Montagnana -nobody, never could sing it better, "fly deeper". The ladies are lecherously "aviatic" to the opposite direction. Those who miss it miss a universe.

        5 out of 5 stars A must-have for Handelians.......2004-08-04

This bargain-priced box set is a must-have for anyone who loves Handel's operas. Whilst Nicholas McGegan has had his critics over some of his Goettingen recordings, it cannot be denied that he has rescued some of Handel's finest arias and operas from the dustbin of History. And here (87 arias later), he has a fine cast of singers all re-living the repertoire of some of the best singers of the 18th century - Lisa Saffer sings arias by Cuzzoni, Drew Minter arias by Senesino, David Thomas arias for Montagnana, and Lorraine Hunt Lieberson arias by Durastanti.

The excellent Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra provide superb accompaniment for each singer, and the sound quality is very good across all four discs. The whole comes with a very informative and exhaustive booklet containing introductory essays for each singer, as well as full libretti.

Highlights include Lisa Saffer's ravishing account of Falsa Imagine (Ottone) which Cuzzoni allegedly refused to sing as it was too plain - until Handel threatened to throw her out of the window..! Lorraine Hunt's re-enaction of Durastanti's Sesto role from Giulio Cesare sees a committed 'L'angue offenso mai riposa'. Drew Minter's coppery and languid countertenor gives delight in little-known arias from Riccardo Primo (Agitato da fiere tempeste) and Tolomeo (Stille Amare). Whilst David Thomas' cavernous bass voice ranges across opera and oratorio roles for Montagnana.

In all this is a superb collection that illustrates what a genius Handel was at characterisation and word-painting. No Handel lover will want to miss it.
