This collection makes a strong case that New York has a more ethnically diverse population of musicians than any other city in the world. In what other place can you hear Albanian shepherds' ballads, Cantonese wedding marches, Irish fiddle tunes, and Haitian gospel music, all within a few blocks of each other? This two-CD set includes examples of all of these, as well as music from recent Indo-Caribbean immigrants, a Trinidadian-style steel-drum band, and selections from two separate tribes of Gypsies. The musicians range from traditionalists like Gee Sook Baek, a Korean musician who is preserving the ancient classical music of her homeland, to players like Luis Dias, a guitarist and singer who blends rock attitude with the rhythms and melodies of the Dominican Republic. I have lived in NY all my life, not in the city,(but very close). The one thing I have always loved about living here is its cultural diversity. People from all walks of life seem to immigrate here. This 2CD set proves that. This is a great world music collection, that includes many tracks by the Latino population. There is a combination of plena, bachata, salsa, merengue and more... From the Caribbean, there is the steeldrums of Trinidad, and Haitian rara(roots music). Asian-Americans contribute some instrumental pieces from Korea and China. Also included is: Celtic, Gypsy, Jewish, Greek, Albanian, and African music. This is a wonderfully inexpensive price for so many different types of music. If you want to learn a little more about the great city of NY, then pick this up!

What happens when a treasured American label works with New York's Center for Traditional Music and Dance to find representative samples of the myriad musical cultures that exist in New York City? This 2CD set is the answer. From Latin America and the West Indies to Europe and Asia, this is truly a fascinating observation into various world music genres. With the always exceptional liner notes Folkways provides, this is an unquestioned bargain.

The New York City Global Beat of the Boroughs stands out as a music compilation on which nearly every one of the 30+ tracks sizzle. I like the CD best because it delivers hot tunes that sound better with multiple listenings - while preserving true, traditional ethnic music styles instead of delivering watered-down, electronic "world fusion". Some of the tracks remind me of the most 'native' world music that a David Byrne or Paul Simon would collaborate on. The music includes Latin American, African American, Middle Eastern, European, and Asian styles. I've seen a related concert in New York City - the artists are equally interesting in person.

Cuban Music with a NYC Attitude!.......2000-02-28

This CD was given to me as a gift. What a gift! I'm Cuban and I know about my roots so as soon as I heard the opening chant to Elegua I knew this was the real deal. This CD pays homage to the West African roots of Afro-Cuban music and covers a lot of bases in a very interesting way. There is a variety of rhythms from my homeland like Mozambique, Songo, Guaguancó, Son Montuno, etc. but with a definite jazz aesthetic. A good example is a beautiful jazz-mambo called "Llegue" which pays homage to the Palladium ballroom in NYC which was the home of the mambo from 1948 till 1966. It even features the voice of the owner Maxwell Hyman! How do I know this? The extensive clear liner notes that are just as incredible as the music. For pure Latino jazzers there are tunes by Joe Henderson and Thelonius Monk that showcase the virtuosity of the players, especially Mr. Sanabria. There is even a jazz joropo(read the liner notes)and Puerto-Rican Plena tibute. I read that Sanabria is a Puerto-Rican from NYC but his Afro-Cuban chops on Drums and percussion are so good that I thought he and his band were from Cuba! Cuban music with a NYC attitude, I love it! Bravisimo mi hermano!

If you are a Latin Jazz lover, you have to have this selection. Bobby sanabria swings through all the different styles of Latin Jazz: Percussion only, Bossa Nova, afro-cuban, Santeria chants. And the result is a great sound and an enjoyable CD from start to finish. Ache, my brother

Boricua to the bone!.......2004-08-26

This is some of the best traditional Latin music from New York, most of it has a true old fashined jazzy salsa feel and flavor to it. There is also soulful boogaloo, funk, some of the best Latin jazz I've ever had the pleasure of enjoying, and chants/drumming jam that sounds like the Afro-Rican bomba style (Druma Kuyi). It also commemorates the Afro-Latin elements of our music with dignity and pride and is therefore accurately described as ROOTS music, with a clear African flavor and stamp. If you're Afro-Rican, PLEASE get this! You'll definitely enjoy it!!!

This compilation serves as abundant proof for those who still need it that "fusion", in other words musical hybridization, happens whenever a collection of artists find themselves in a new situation and must respond in their own way. The "roots" of the title has a double meaning, then: it refers to the Cuban and Puerto Rican roots (at the very root is Africa) of this music, but it's also another perspective on the melting pot of New York City as reflected by its Latino musicians; though the fusion of influences here is more subtle than that heard on the original Nu Yorica! compilation, the stew boils with a similar popping viscosity (leading in some cases to a thermal breakdown.)

Many of the greats of Latin music are represented, among them Eddie Palmieri with one of his earliest masterpieces "My Spiritual Indian", which prefaces the bolder experiment of "Un Dia Bonita" (found on the original Nu Yorica set.) Percussion masters Mongo Santamaria and Tito Puente show up with seminal tracks, Tito's typically-ebullient and Mongo's typically-rootical, with the strong and beautiful raw chants and percussion of "Druma Kuyi."

Much of the most contemporary-sounding material comes when Latin and black idioms meet. Witness the opening "Together", a monster proto-funk jam pinned down by a sped-up montuno piano motif, or even Joe Bataan's bugulu "Riot (It's a Good Feeling)" which contains in its innocent party-flavored groove a commentary on the mood of the "wild guys" who have had enough and must throw a brick at something.

T he world's greatest Charanga band never disapoints but this swinging set is so hot, irrepressible, mesmerising and danceable that it's almost scary! Violently Latin salsa rhythyms mixed with the three part harmony vocals, the lightly dancing and sweet flute, a pianist that grabs you and won't let go, and a ferverish conjuncto trumpet man. Well now!

Alex Torres and his Latin Kings are simply one of the best Salsa/Latin Jazz groups on this planet! This CD is filled with pure infectiously upbeat latin dance music, crisp horn and percussion riffs, and incredible dynamic energy. You will NOT be disappointed in this selection.
