Amazon.com's Best of 1999

Too long considered an erotic trifle, this masterpiece of psychological insight is on a par with Shakespeare's bittersweet comedies. The keen, witty direction of René Jacobs brings us a magnificently bracing, but never fussy, period-instrument interpretation. And the bonus CD-ROM allows you to explore the context and character of Mozart's opera in fascinating detail. --Thomas May

Amazon.com essential recording

However the characters of Così fan tutte behave, interpretations of the work certainly belie its title ("They're All Like That"). And this is one of the most bracing, exhilarating new recordings of a Mozart opera to come along in a while. Here you won't find any of the self-conscious uptightness that mars too many period-instrument undertakings. Rather, the attention that René Jacobs and his performers lavish on "historically informed" Mozartean style is as gloriously revealing as the brightened contours of a freshly restored fresco. Just take the startlingly crisp attack in the overture's first bars: it announces what will prove an unfailingly energetic, tart, and witty approach to Mozart's score, and one with an ultimately moving payoff. The Concerto Köln--including some giddily inventive accompaniment on period pianoforte--plays with hair-trigger precision and stints neither on the ironically winking nor the elegiac moments. Jacobs has assembled a superlative, stylish cast, from Pietro Spagnoli's mordantly cynical Alfonso to Véronique Gens's winning way with the high-flying opera seria poses struck by Fiordiligi. Most importantly, this cast forms a true ensemble: there is incandescent sotto voce singing in the Act I farewell scene, while at the end of the opera the antics boil over into a scene of poignant reconciliation. Finally, this set includes a bonus interactive CD-ROM crowded with information about the opera's structure, background, and interpretation, all of it engagingly presented. This is a package no lover of Mozart should miss. --Thomas May

5 out of 5 stars best recording of a Mozart opera, period........2007-06-24

If my username doesn't say it all (yes, folks, in this one Don Alfonso is a major player), let me add: if anyone out there knows of an opera recording better than this, I'd love to hear it.

5 out of 5 stars A box of sweets lined with lace.......2006-04-09

The linear quality of the music in this recording is so well drawn out and detailed that I heard lines of music I had never heard before. It's very graphic and at the same time very coloristic. The vocal performances are extremely well proportioned and balanced creating an elegant ensemble whole. The pianoforte accompanment is like a lace lining to the work. As one other reviewer has said the feeling is like seeing a favorite fresco re-cleaned.It is an exquistely balanced and proported interpretation which creates a symmetrical musical whole in an intimate "repertory type" company production. It is also an interpretation that opens up views into the past(the Baroque) and forsees the future (Romantic). I think this comes from Jacobs' long successful work with Renaissance and Baroque opera, and with his work with late Haydn. There is a sense of the infinite in this interpretation. It has captured something of the endless potential inherent in the work. This recording together with the Bohm/Schwarkopf version will give you a sense of the potential of this work. (P.S. I found that the page numbers in the index of the accompaning book beside the track numbers to be all wrong (bad proof-reading) Shame on you Harmonia Mundi!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful re-vision of my favorite opera.......2006-03-29

This is one of my favorite recordings of Cosi. I love how fresh and transparent it sounds. Even though the singers aren't superstars like Schwarzkopf or Fleming, they certainly give them a run for their money. This is the most intimate and light of all the Cosi recordings I own, and one that focuses on the drama the most.

The only complaint I have about this set is the quintet in Act I (Deh scrivermi). The tempo is grotesquely slow here, which is almost shocking, considering that the rest of the recording moves along at a healthily brisk pace.

All in all, it's a very satisfying and pleasant recording, and deserves to be one of the top-ranked Cosi's of all time. But I'm not sure it's a good first-timer's choice, because its somewhat atypical. For one thing, Jacobs encourages his singers to employ appoggiatura (improvised decorations of the vocal lines), far moreso than most conductors; the results are somewhat mixed, because, though it definitely gives the performance a unique and distinctive feel, I feel that sometimes the singers make some poor choices in their improvisation. But that is only a minor point. Also, the pianoforte, which usually only accompanies secco recitatives, can be heard chiming in during other times, along with the orchestra. I felt it was a charming and original touch, but I can imagine some people might find it too odd for their palate.

In short, I think this recording is a must-own, along with the Bohm, Solti, and Mackerras versions. None of these recordings are perfect, but they each have an element that is the unrivaled best.

NOTE: This is just the re-release of this recording: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00000I8DY/qid=1143623562/sr=11-1/ref=sr_11_1/102-8917568-4027355?n=5174

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful performance, beautifully packaged.......2005-12-26

I have a good collection of opera CDs, but this is fast becoming my favorite. Rene Jacobs has become justifiably famous for this interpretation of Cosi Fan Tutte (as well as his Le Nozze di Figaro). This rivals the classic recordings with Bohm and others and may even eclipse them all. I intend to try out his Le Nozze soon. If HM packages it like this Cosi, that would be all the better.

Harmonia Mundi has done a spendid job of packaging this "Mozart Edition" version as a slip-sleeved jewel case sized 278 page hard bound book with the three audio CDs in separate CD sleeves at the front and back. This is the best presentation of any multi-CD recording in my library. If only other music publishers would take a lead from Harmonia Mundi here, we could be forever rid of the fragile and user unfriendly plastic CD jewel case. The book includes libretto as well as commentary and synopsis in four languages with plenty of colorful images.

This is a beautifully presented treasure.

5 out of 5 stars Mi otro sentimiento.......2006-03-31

This oratorio for six voices concerns, as the title implies, the murder of Abel by Cain. Though the possibility of one Baroque da capo aria after another may strike fear into your heart, fear not: Scarlatti sprinkles arias throughout, interspersing them with dramatic recitatives, duets, a trio, and brief, scene-setting orchestral interludes with a small but colorfully used group of instruments, all beautifully played here. Moreover, the voice parts vary: Adam and Eve are tenor and soprano, respectively; Cain and Abel are alto and soprano; and the voice of God and Lucifer are countertenor and bass. For a two-and-a-quarter hour oratorio from 1707, this work never tires the ear or emotions: A nice listening experience, all the way round. --Robert Levine

Wow, - what a performance, what a work, what a discovery. This is simply stunning, from beginning to end. Marvellous arias, inventive scoring, wonderful performances of music which is everchanging in character but never dropping in quality. If you only buy one baroque disc this year, make it this set. Nothing more to say, and thats just how you'll feel at the end, right before you play it all through again.

5 out of 5 stars Long overdue recording of a masterpiece.......2000-05-02

Written before Handel's "Messiah" or Bach's Passions, Scarlatti's "Il Primo Omicidio" is the prototype of the Baroque oratorio. The music contains genuine depth of emotion, and this performance does full justice to Scarlatti's innovation. With a life-time of experience in Baroque music, conductor Rene Jacobs leads the playing forces with admirable understanding of the score. It is also a pleasure to hear him sing the role of God. His counter-tenor voice still retains those qualities of beauty and attention to "proper" performance practice that made him the counter-tenor paragon of the 1970's. The cast is, in short, extraordinary. Dorothea Roschmann, Bernarda Fink, and Graciela Oddone are all technically accomplished, and they bring rich interpretations to their beautiful arias. As Adam, tenor Richard Croft admirably fulfills his role as ambassador of a supremely musical family (his brother is wonderful baritone Richard Croft). Antonio Abete, as the voice of Lucifer, exhibits the sort of bass voice often utilized in Baroque recordings: dark, emotive, and even if not powerful or memorable. This recording should bring much pleasure to lovers of Baroque music or singing.

      5 out of 5 stars superb.......1999-02-15

The story behind Inolvidable is as fascinating and charming as the music itself. The 82-year-old conguero Candido Camero lured 88-year-old vocalist Graciela out of retirement for this project, despite the fact that she was nearly crippled by arthritis. Graciela was a leader in the Afro-Cuban jazz genre for half a century, having been the lead vocalist for both Machito and his Jazz Orchestra and Mario Bauza's band. Inspired by Candido's energy, Graciela positively soars throughout Inolvidable, which tickles the senses with a smorgasbord of sounds, styles and flavors. Age has worn some on Graciela's golden voice, but both artists are in fine form here. Candido's percussion--and the rest of the instrumentation--is easy and unforced. And Graciela's confident, authoritative vocal style is simply unmatched in the genre. Both artists glide and flutter effortlessly throughout the material, making Inolvidable a surprisingly sweet musical treat. --Joey Guerra

            5 out of 5 stars Absolutely beautiful.......2005-02-10

This is a truly, truly gorgeous cd. While countless BVSC cd's, and all of their offspring are pushed upon us - and I'll be the first to admit they *are* fantastic in their own right - out comes this little sleeper on the tiny Chesky label. And what a tremendous offering it is. Beautiful and flowing from start to finish, it truly presents the beauty that is Cuban son and its derivatives in a majestic form. Gorgeous singing by Graciela, tremendous playing by the legendary Candido - both reunited after having played together with Machito back in the day (someone else you should definitely check out). I don't know if I can find enough eloquent words to capture the beauty and majesty of this cd, but it's one you should not pass up and should get before it goes out of print as I'm sure it will. Get it and treasure it - it will bring you much, much happiness.

5 out of 5 stars Graciela: A Treat for the Eyes as well as the Ears.......2003-06-27

Graciela Beltran is becoming more and more like The Who of Regional Mexican music. Her labels have released more greatest hits and compilations than studio albums, it seems. At first glance, this one appears to be another last-ditch effort by EMI-Latin to make money off of Graciela's name after she had already split the label to record her latest studio effort, "No Me Arrepiento De Nada," for Univision. In fact, EMI-Latin already released a much more comprehensive, remastered, double-CD greatest hits package in late March called "30 Exitos Insuperables," so, is this really necessary?

Well, even after you've already seen all these tunes on dozens of other compilations, the answer is yes, because what separates this from the rest is the bonus DVD featuring several of Graciela's videos. Spanning her career from 1993 ("Pilares de Cristal") to 2002 ("Que Va" from her last EMI-Latin studio release, "A Los Grandes"), these videos give testament to Graciela's growth as an artist, a singer and a woman (well, in reverse perhaps, because the DVD begins with the newest video and ends with the oldest). All the videos tell some sort of happy or sad love story, which can get a bit old (especially seeing too many "beefcakes" that take too much screen time away from Graciela), but at least the themes are varied enough to keep things interesting visually and musically. "Se Me Notan Tus Besos" is a little on the suggestive side, actually, though compared with so many of the shallow Latina hoochie vidoes that hog the screen these days (read: J-Low), it is rather tame. "Sigue Tu Ruta" is the best. Graciela dismisses man after man (from beefcake to dirty old man to cholo) who want more from here than just a ride in her convertible ;^ ). The only thing missing is any video from her award-winning "Tuya" Mariachi album.

If you only have a few if not any of Graciela's previous compilations, and if you have a DVD player, this is the perfect visual summation of her career to this point and time (if just an average audio one). It is a fun listen, though, and it's fun to watch, too.
