A Really Nice Set..........2004-12-25
It features Rheinberger's string quartets, piano trios, and of course the nonet. Performances are good; sound good. If you don't know who Rheinberger was, you can find him in the Grove Dictionary.

Marvelous musical canvas! .......2005-11-15
Frescobaldi was organist for excellence and exerted that office in San Pedro, Roma between 1604 until his death in 1643 with a brief period as organist in Florence between 1628 and 1634.
His Canzoni constitute perhaps, the most refined evidence of his creative talent. Admirable from all standpoint. Fortunately for us, in the second half of the century XX there was a sudden interest about his musical legacy, that allowed to many ensembles as this fabulous and relatively recent (1979), or Andrew Parrot soloists have made possible the rediscover of such appreciated and many times forgotten gems of this Period.
Perfect tonal balance and aristocrat musicality characterize this excellent ensemble. Go for this CD without dilation.

The Venetians have always had a genius for celebration. Take, for example, Ascension Day: what began as a simple gathering of sailors to pray for St. Nicholas's protection became by the 16th century an opulent procession of barges across the Lagoon, a ceremony where the Doge (and Venice) ceremonially married the sea "as a sign of perpetual dominion" over it, and a sumptuous High Mass. Robert King has assembled (on a two-CDs-for-one set) an assortment of music for this occasion. Disc One, the Procession to the Lagoon, has an extraordinary variety of secular pieces: drum tattoos and trumpet fanfares; elegant instrumental works; grand multiple-choir madrigals; delicate pieces for three lutes; even Venetian church bells. The second disc (music from the Mass) has similar instrumental music and sprightly organ pieces mixed with impressive Mass movements for choir, soloists, and brass by the Gabrielis. Now this is a very worthwhile release, and the King's Consort performs very capably, every note in place--what's missing is a sense of excitement and festivity, the energy that Paul McCreesh would bring to such an occasion. First recordings of some of this music.......2002-08-17
There are some fabulous pieces here that are rarely recorded and I suspect that some of these works have received their recording debut here.
The vast madrigal by Giovani Gabrieli - 'Udite, chiari e generosi figli' and Andrea Gabrieli's polychoral madrigals 'Cantiam de Dio' and 'Vieni, vieni Himeneo' are beautifully performed here and I know of no other recordings of these works.
The Canzon per otto tromboni by Tiburtio Massaino is a deep and dark piece and suggests that this composer deserves further exploration.
A couple of minor criticisms - the madrigal Lieto Godea is taken at a snail's pace and it is hard to believe listening to this performance that this piece inspired so many composers! Also, the performance of the Sonata XX à 22 is a all right but the recording made by the Taverner Consort & Players under the direction of Andrew Parrott is vastly superior.
Overall, a very entertaining CD with a couple of interpretations that did not impress me very much. Buy with confidence!

Very Nice Snapshot of Musical Moment.......2006-01-22
To those unfamiliar with The Parlay of Instruments, I should warn you that while the trumpet is the star, this is not all trumpet solo music. Nine (9) of the thirteen (13) ensemble members are playing a bowed instrument, one is playing a reed woodwind (bassoon), one is playing a harpsicord, and two are playing other wind instruments, a trombone and a theorbo.
None of the pieces are by well-known composers. I simply recognize none of the composers' names. No Vivaldi or Montiverdi here!
The primary historical interest of the pieces lie in the fact that they were composed when the trumpet was making the transition from being a musical court megaphone with no keys and tuned to a single octave to an instrument with keys which could span at least three different keys.
All the pieces are entirely enjoyable and well worth the time of anyone interested in some of the more remote corners of classical music.

Customer Reviews:
Classical guitar duo plays Mike Oldfield's TUBULAR BELLS.......2000-11-23
I came across this album quite by accident.
I have always been a fan of Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells and its sequels. I was searching the net for CD singles from Tubular Bells III when I came across a forum and read a short post about this guitar duo. I followed it up with some more searching and ended up buying it. Why? Read on. I listened to the short sound clips of the tracks and was impressed. Duo Sonare seem to have researched the exact guitar phrasing very closely and it shows. I'm sure we have all heard 'covers' of favourite pieces of music and been disappointed by the results - parts 1 and 2 of this album are definitely NOT in that category!
However, it does strike me as odd that the version of the Sailors Hornpipe that they chose to cover is the 'drunken' Vivian Stanshall one from the Mike Oldfield 3-album Boxed Set and not the original release instrumental version. Yes, I know the Viv Stanshall version was preferred by Mike Oldfield but in this cover it is odd and slightly embarrassing. Vivian is amusing but to blandly repeat his words in a dead-pan, upper-class and obviously sober voice just doesn't work. Nevertheless, as it is only a very short section of the whole album it barely detracts from the whole listening experience. Given the difficult structuring of the original music I believe that Duo Sonare have created a wonderful version.
If you are a fan of the first Tubular Bells or its orchestral version then I highly recommend this classical guitar duo version to you. It is very relaxing to listen to.
If you are not a fan of the original Tubular Bells or Mike Oldfield I can still commend this music to you. It is wonderful.......and it may just sow the seeds of a an experience that will make you wonder what you have missed all those years since 1973.

A Gem of a Baroque Album.......2003-03-06
Lovely music ruined by the sound of "old instruments".......2002-10-15
The fact is that since the invention of modern stringed instruments, not a single serious piece of music has been composed with the specification that it should be played with old instruments. The reason is easy to understand, once you have heard both the old and the modern instruments playing the same piece. The old instruments have a whining, thin, nasal, wiry sound that is decidedly unpleasant. It lacks the sweetness, depth, and sheen that we have become accustomed to in modern times. Thus, nobody ever writes pieces for those instruments any more.
The argument that there is something about music from the earlier era that lends itself more appropriately to the old instruments is nonsense. The fact is, that as soon as modern stringed instruments were developed, all composers and performers switched to those modern instruments as soon as they could afford to do so - regardless of their style. And I know of no historical evidence that any composers CHANGED their style to any noticeable degree so that their music was more conducive to the new instruments. They just used the new instruments because they were objectively better.
So this CD is recommended only for people who believe that music is a historical or archeological exercise (i.e., people who don't know what music is in the first place), or people who don't care or notice what kind of instruments are being played (i.e., people with tin ears).
