Just in time for sultry weather festivities, the trusty world music compilation label Putumayo has put together yet another dynamite party album. From the opening 1-2-3/1-2 clavé of Raúl' Paz' "Mua Mua Mua", which is soon overwhelmed by electronica only to re-emerge at will, the beats are as relentless as they are caressing. The set covers a lot of ground geographically, as Puerto Rican salsa, Mexican and Colombia cumbia and Cuban rumba have long since become international preoccupations, performed by local practitioners in every corner of the globe. Africando, with its blend of West African salseros and New York-based Latin all-stars, and Riccardo Lemvo's suave rumba Congolaise via LA, have repatriated rhythms that came from Africa in the first place. Belgium is an unlikely pit-stop, but Gabriël Rios' Santeria-infused "Bones Bugalu" has plenty of authenticity plus panache to spare. The grooves just keep coming, so put on those dancing shoes, snag an ice-cold forty-ouncer of malt liquor from the corner bodega and swing the night away! Part of the proceeds from this album will be donated to United For Colombia, in support of their efforts to help children who have been injured by landmines. --Christina Roden

Album Description

¡Baila!.is a global Latin party featuring salsa, cumbia, and meringue mixed with contemporary dance beats and rhythms. The party starts in the streets of Havana before hitting the road. Raul Paz kicks it off with "Mua Mua Mua," seamlessly blending the deep grooves of his native Cuba with the contemporary stylings he's picked up since relocating to France. Back in Cuba NG La Banda offer "La Cachimba" their mission statement announcing the virtues of a new musical style that's sure to make you dance. Next the party travels to Colombia, where the collective known as La-33 is revitalizing salsa by reconnecting it to the genre's golden era of the 1960s and 70s. Not to be outdone, however, New York delivers a rhythm-driven one-two punch with The Spanish Harlem Orchestra and Yerba Buena contributing the best of the old school and the new. On the West Coast, Argentinean ex-pats Los Pinguos and Congo native Ricardo Lemvo integrate various Latin elements that keep the party people on their feet.

The next stop on the party express is Belgium, where Gabriel Rios landed after leaving his native Puerto. Experimenting with a variety of influences while maintaining his deep Latin roots has made this unique musician an unlikely pop star in his adopted home. Next we travel to Stockholm, Sweden, where the high-powered ensemble Calle Real is bringing a thaw to their native city. The Africando All Stars and Brooklyn Funk Essentials round out this collection, proving once and for all that the party is right here.

A portion of Putumayo's proceeds from the sale of this CD will be donated to United for Colombia in support of their efforts to help children who are victims of landmines in Colombia.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect from start to finish!.......2007-05-31

An absolutely irresistable collection of dance salsa! The first two cuts are absolutely spectacular. Everything else is nearly as strong. There is not a throw-away on this CD. I took a Cuban Salsa dance lesson recently, and the instructor played "Mua Mua Mua" 3 or 4 times every lesson for 7 lessons, and the class never tired of it, we just loved the song more each time! The entire CD stands up well to repeated listening. It has a nice variety, with a couple tracks having a reggaeton sound, and a couple cumbias, while sticking closer to true cuban salsa rather that the Americanized club sound. Mostly though the sound is pure and true Salsa. If that is what you are looking for, this is a must have disc!

5 out of 5 stars Love Putumayo music.......2007-01-05

This is one of my favorite Putumayo cds, although I love them all. It is fun, energetic and makes my 19 month old son show us his moves! A must for music lovers.

4 out of 5 stars New Style Salsa and Latin Flavors.......2006-08-28

Putumayo always puts out a quality product, and this disc is no exception. The collection of salsa and latin rhythyms is a collection spanning several countries, but all of the tracks are lively upbeat and fun. several of the tracks include electronic elements, such as electric drumbeats and samples. This allows the listeners to see what is being done with a now classic genre to revitalize it. this new generation of Salseros breathes new life into a now-classic music style.
I would recomend this for any casual listener interested in hearing some modern style salsa music. fun to dance to and upbeat and cheery.

5 out of 5 stars TRULY A SENSATIONAL PIECE!.......2006-05-24

This music makes you want to get up and dance! The first few tracks are the best, but the whole CD is very good. I could not stop listening to son fro by africando and many more. Hide this CD because once you pop it in, your friends will never want to give it back to you. After owning gypsy caravan, afro-latino, afro latin party, salsa around the world, cuba and many more i have come to say that this is one of the best putumayo we have seen up to date. Also check out putumayo colombia-It is sure to get you dancing like you have never danced before!

5 out of 5 stars An Alchemy of Antiquity.......2005-10-11

The Sephardim were the Jews of Spain. They picked up many musical elements on their journey there. The sum is very much an alchemy of antiquity. It's got Greek modes, North African percussion, Turkish/Arabic melodies and a bit of Western European refinement. The original Jewish component is the lyrical text which was first sung by women around the house. After being steeped in the culture of Andalusian Spain for a few centuries it allowed more and more instrumental phrases. And since this was secular music, it was acknowledged and enjoyed by everyone at this place in time -- Muslims, Jews and Christians. The ensemble who performed these pieces did a great job, utilizing completely acoustic and culuturally-respective instruments. You can't beat the price either!

5 out of 5 stars easily the most formidable instrumentalists in early music.......2001-08-07

Note, however, that Sephardic music is NOT verifiably medieval, having been recorded only in the 20th century. Also note that Sephardic songs are/were rarely accompanied by instruments (all the arrangements here are instrument-heavy). Nonetheless, the fact remains that Michael Posch, Marco Ambrosini, Riccardo Delfino, and Thomas Wimmer are among the very few truly brilliant early music players at large. Their names may never be trumpeted by early music critics, but that's because said critics tend to be desiccated scholars instead of impassioned musicians (rather like most of the performers they critique). This CD features lots of compelling improvisations and extended solos -- including one, "kavaldulka", that's just from another world. Purists be damned: the musicianship is too good to be missed! btw, the ensemble is also known as Unicorn and Oni Wytars.

5 out of 5 stars Ladino-Ensemble Accentus.......2000-05-19

Of all the Ladino/Sephardic music I have come across, this is one of the most lovingly crafted compilations. The ensemble treats every song with respect and care, and plays them with great spirit. The songs chosen were also organized in a way that helps to reflect the beauty of the music. Absolutely enchanting!

5 out of 5 stars Love that fiddle!.......2000-05-10

I agree with the other reviews here; this is an excellent CD, especially given the bargain price. I love the fiddling on this disc in particular - it's a must-listen for any fiddlers looking to expand their horizons. Great rhythm throughout, too, and the recording quality is fantastic; the music really comes alive in stereo. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Can't top this one!.......1999-12-19

The above review hits the nail on the head. What I especially enjoy are the inventive and highly rhythmic arranagements that bring out the full variety, verve, spirit and beauty of this special music.

With the bargain price this is a good way to exoplore this genre of music.

Latin, the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet's homage to the music of Latin America and Spain, opens weakly with a tune called "Fragile," a bit of melodic fluff composed by Sting. After that's safely out of the way, however, the four virtuosos go on to play much more satisfying works by such composers as Leo Brouwer from Cuba, Astor Piazolla from Argentina, Egberto Gismonti from Brazil, and Joaquin Rodrigo from Spain. The music ranges from the passionate, earthy flamenco of "Sevillanas" to the austere, almost abstract tone poem "Cuban Landscape with Rain" and on to the jazzy harmonies of "Forrobodo." The most exciting piece is the six-movement "Carmen Suite," which the quartet plays with a thrilling blend of passion and precision. But no matter how disparate the music, the impeccable technique, musical intelligence, and emotional delivery of John Dearman, William Kanengiser, Scott Tennant, and Andrew York find the common thread to tie it all together. --Michael Simmons

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best CD since Labyrinth.......2003-06-01

Fantastic. I was very pleased with this CD. The playing was fantastic as expected. However, what I like most is the arrangements. The arrangements are not typical of Classical musicians. No doubt this is because of Andrew York and John Dearman's versatilty in a wide range of musical styles. Also, it doesn't hurt that Bill Kanangiser and Scott Tenant are among the finest Clasical Guitarists in history.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2003-04-10

I'm a big fan of LAGQ but am somewhat disappointed with this CD. The playing is near flawless as usual, but I was expecting a more interesting selection of Latin pieces. One of the few exceptions on this CD is Aaron Copland's "Danza de Jalisco," which is arranged and performed marvelously by LAGQ. This group puts on some of the best concerts out there, but I find that many of their recordings lack the same excitement. The CD "LAGQ" (1997?) is an exception, with its variety and energetic performances.

3 out of 5 stars Reconsider.......2003-02-15

Probably fine for the guitarist wanting to appreciate some good licks, but not pleasant or soothing music for listening. I gave mine away.

5 out of 5 stars Latin Licks.......2003-01-31

This cd is awesome!!!

No wonder LAGQ: Latin was nominated for a Grammy as Best Classical Crossover Album.

5 out of 5 stars this album rocks.......2002-10-12

the LAGQ again give us some suprise with this recent release. This is the second best version of Carmen Suite (second only to Romero's, but much better than Segovia Quartet's).
The whole album is full of Latin style and spanish favor.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Music from Humphrey Bogar Movies.......2007-06-27

I was disappointed. I thought I would be getting a CD of full length themes from his movies but the CD is exactly what it says. It is from the actual films, in sections and pieces. I can't say it was misrepresented so I guess I was at fault. But I am sorry I bought it.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the original.......2007-06-19

As the previous reviewer rightly pointed out, these are the original recordings from the era the films were made. And yes, the sound is completely different from what we are used to hear when we are turning the CD player on: it's mono, it's partially unsteady and some of the pieces suddenly fade. BUT, it's the REAL thing and it transports the charms and the charisma, inherent to the original ONLY.
Those who prefer the flawless technical perfection of a re-recording better should save their money. But for those who love the movies and their genuine sound, should be perfectly pleased with this release.

2 out of 5 stars not the stuff dreams are made of.......2007-01-03

most of the tracks on this cd are available elsewhere, but what prompts me to give this a low review is the quality of the recording. some of them sound like they were taped off of a tv set showing a warbly print. you can do better elsewhere.

Track 11 had a lot of potential... but it was cut short.

4 out of 5 stars Muy bueno.......2000-10-12

4 out of 5 stars An excellent album that will have you singing all day long!.......2000-09-12

Ella Baila Sola may yet prove to be the best pop group in recent Spanish music (move over Duncan Dhu and Presuntos Implicados), and their first album highlights their brilliant ability to balance stylish guitar pop and soulful ballads, even throwing in some salsa-oriented Latin numbers for the Hispanophile purist. These talented women write their own lyrics, compose their own music and play their own instruments, all the while drawing you into their particular performing style. I highly recommend this first album, which will undoubtedly prove to have a much longer shelf life than their second album, E.B.S. Enjoy the poetic flow of their ballad lyrics, especially "Lo echamos a suertes" and "Por ti". Allow yourself to get swept up in the catchy beat and cool lyrics of their upbeat songs, especially "Amores de barra" and "Muere el silencio". Finally, for a real treat with a sarcastically amusing feminist tone, enjoy "Mujer Florero". I promise you will be singing all of these songs for years to come!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful taste of real Spanish pop.......2000-09-10

Every time I listen to this duo I like it better than the last time. This is great music, specially Amores De Barra, Cuando Los Sapos Bailen Flamenco, Mujer Florero, and Por Ti, most of which have a wistful, moody feel (except for Mujer Florero, a tongue-in-cheek song about a good little housewife). This is Spanish pop at its best, and I can't get enough of this songs, specially considering that I live in the States, where Spanish pop is reduced to the likes of Ricky Martin and Jennifer Lopez (somebody please shoot me). Even if you don't understand Spanish this is a must have for anyone with a serious interest in music, this is really a quality buy.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for In-your-car Scream Singing.......2000-09-09

I lived abroad in Spain for a semester and my Spanish "sisters" were always talking about this group. I broke down and bought the album (even though I didn't have a CD player with me) and fell in love with it. I kept it in my car for months and found myself "scream singing" to most of the songs, especially Amores de Barra and Mejor Sin Ti-both quite empowering. The songs are upbeat and catchy. If you don't speak Spanish you'll likely pick up the lyrics anyway. A great buy!!

5 out of 5 stars Tango at its best.......2001-01-26

Sexteto Mayor has moved the old tango to today's music values, without loosing the essence of the tango, the 2x4 rythm. It combines then two things, highly professionally executed music with the virtues of the Argentine tango. A perfect combination. Even if you are not a tango fan, you should not miss this one. This CDs reflects a performance that has today over 500 presentations around the globe, from China to Albulquerque, from Turkey to San Diego, and has performed in the best theatres and music center around the world. Do not miss it.

4 out of 5 stars Mixed emotions.......2000-07-20

I admit it, when it comes to tango, I tend to be a purist. Therefore, I still have a hard time accepting many of the latest "fusion" trends such as certain songs found in this CD which are not real tangos [e.g. "Ojos negros" a traditional Russian song, played in a tango tune] as well as the "bilingual" versions of some traditional tangos (sung with a pathetic accent, reminiscent of the early days of Julio Iglesias, I might add!)] The orchestra however, sounds wonderful, exceptionally balanced and very assertive.

5 out of 5 stars Impressive collection. A MUST have........1999-10-31

Sexteto Mayor has been known for years in Argentina as being some of the best in tango interpreting and playing. This production meets all expections. This is Argentinian Tango at its best. Great examples were chosen for this CD, I buy it often to give to friends that want to know about my Argentinian origins.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......1999-06-04

Sexteto Mayor is a MUST HAVE in every tango lover's collection. This is authentic Argentinian tango at its best!

I had to get the album, and to my surprise the whole album is very classy, and makes you want to listen to each track all the way through! This album is relaxing, and also makes you want to ballroom or salsa!! This is my first time owning a Hubert Laws album, and I am considering buying some of his old albums. The flute sound is very pretty in these songs. I am truly a music lover, and this album is definitely worth owning!! If you are a jazz, and latin jazz music lover, you will LOVE this CD!!!
