Album Description

This emblematic concert occurred when Astor Piazzolla's music was at its high point, during his Sexteto European tour in 1989 and 1990. This recording takes place at his Moulin Musique performance in Lausanne, Switzerland on November 4, 1989. This concert was recorded by one Suisse Romande Radio to be broadcast during the holidays.

4 out of 5 stars Classical music, tango and jazz junction.......2006-12-28

Recorded nine months before Astor Piazzolla suffered a stroke that left him in a coma for several years before passing, this recording for Swiss radio is delightfully melancholy. The songs span his remarkable career including his "Tango Nueva" works from 1954 to 1988 and his "Tango Nuevo, Nuevo" compositions from the summer of 1989. The music is sparse and lacks the production skills of a studio recording but the bandoneon echoes through proclaiming the essence and purity of the recording is the music itself; it is a musical document. The recording has a jazz club feel and sound to it since the instruments accompanying Astor are only piano, cello, double bass and guitar. The interaction is a mix of classical, tango and jazz that revolutionized traditional tango music that is clearly evident here. The accoustic sounds are magnificent, there is a quite hush and demand for the disc to be listened to with respect which will leave you in awe. Apparently the audience was just as attentive as it only erupts after a song is over and politlely returns to silence. "Adios Nomino"(one of his most recognized songs written for his deceased father) begins with forceful piano introduction that opens it up for Astor to work the bandeon before giving way to the cellos solo and making way for a united jam session driven by the bandoneon. It is this type of interaction, call and responce that plays to the jazz idiom soupled with the cello to create a different sound. The bandoneon and cello coupled make for a melancholy sound that can suddenly erupt into flights of fancy runs on the bandoneon that will suddenly elevate you;this music is an emotional experience. There are three long jams of over ten minutes that are like mini-drams where you experience many different feelings from the different tempos. When you think the song may be ending it is just beginning another passage to thrill the senses. This disc is like a roller coaster ride of highs and lows where you always come out on top. If you are new to Piazzolla I'm not sure if this is the place to start but it is complete in it's representing his music. He was an innovator and one of a kind as is evident on this disc. I only take away a star because the sound quality could be better but might not have been possible because of the original recording. It is great stuff nonetheless.

5 out of 5 stars Fine Performances Of These Schumann Pieces For Piano And Orchestra From Zacharias and His Chamber Orchestra.......2007-05-26

Classical music fans who are also serious audiophiles should rush to buy this fine recording of the Schumann Piano Concerto. Although it is not my primary recommendation, it is noteworthy for several reasons, among which is the insightful, dramatic playing by soloist and conductor Christian Zacharias. Often overlooked by classical music fans in North America, Zacharias has received ample praise for his profound, dramatic interpretations of Classical and Romantic piano music, of which his most noteworthy performances may be those performing works composed by Beethoven, Schubert and Schumann. In Europe, he's also become well known as a conductor, and has led this small Swiss chamber orchestra comprised of exceptional musicians; an orchestral force that is noticeably smaller than comparable ensembles like the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and the Academy of Saint Martin in the Fields. Zacharias' noteworthy interpretation of the venerable Schumann Piano Concerto includes adherence to brisk tempi (especially the first and second movements) and using smaller orchestral forces. However, Zacharias's fine interpretation with a smaller orchestra may not appeal to those seeking more traditional accounts with much larger orchestras, of which those from the likes of Argerich, Grimaud and Perahia as soloists may be more appealing.

One of the most unusual aspects of this recording is its almost unique coupling with two rarely performed Schumann concertinos for piano and orchestra (The only other instance I'm aware of where all three works appear on the same recording is a 1990s recording with Murray Perahia as soloist accompanied by Claudio Abbado conducting the Berliner Philharmoniker.). Both pieces are performed admirably by Zacharias and his Lausanne chamber orchestra. Indeed these fine performances may be more important reasons of themselves in acquiring this recording than yet another fine performance of the Schumann piano concerto. Without question this is definitely a Schumann recording of works for piano and orchestra which I can recommend highly.

            4 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE.......2005-06-14

This one with "The Central Park Concert", are the very best of the live albums by Piazzolla.

Having those two, you can say that you are in full contact with this musician.

            5 out of 5 stars A golden gem!.......2005-04-25

Piazzolla was simply superb in this spelling performance. Even this album presents works of major experimental profile, such Contrabajísimo and Reality, the known pieces as Mumuki, and Camorra are filled with such intensity level and rapture that it will reward you by far.

Coming to his classic works as Tanguedia III, La milonga del ángel and Adios Nonino, the result is much more than impressive. It 's colossal. The cosmic inspiration flows without any effort. The whole concert is much more dramatic and less lyrical than the Vienna Concert, that reveals that the real artist nature. The changing temperament is a clear evidence of the constant transformation understood as innovation, in last instance.

When you listen Operación tango, you will be immediately carried to another universe, of zero atmosphere introspective and profoundly meditative. Angel Ridolfi in the contrabass and Gerardo Bandini make a real tour de force performance.

For those people who still disagree with the tango new airs given by Piazzolla accusing of falsifying the authentic essence of this genre, let me remind them a crude but valiant statement pronounced by Gustav Mahler: "Traditionalism is negligence."

Astor Piazzolla died on July 5 1992, but I guess his music's charm and innovative moods will be captivating new people generations in every corner of the world, and with all certainty will be listened far beyond the fifth millennium, because the genius is always contemporary.

The Lausanne Concert is the first ever Piazzolla album I heard, and it changed the way I hear music. Track number one: "Tanguedia III" still blows my mind, it's violent, rythmic and complicated, just perfect!. I highly recommend this CD.
