On first hearing, Ruben Blades's Grammy-winning Tiempos seems far too laid-back, its soft guitars and trilling saxophones edging dangerously close to smooth jazz. Listen longer, though, and the music's backbone reveals itself in a series of supple rhythms. This is far from the ear-expanding salsa of Blades's early recordings, and even from the Anglocized rock of Nothing but the Truth. The angry, mournful social and political comment of that record carries over to Tiempos, though, with Blades decrying exclusionary immigration policies ("Puente del Mundo") and commemorating the 1989 U.S. invasion of Panama ("20 de Diciembre"). Great job Editus !.......2004-04-17

This album might not have been the same if it weren't because of Editus, these guys rock! (Excelente muchachos!) Ruben and Editus make such a great fusion that it all seems they were meant to produce together. The melody is so exquisite that I just can't get enough of listening to this album. I particularly love 'Sicarios' myself, but every other piece in it is just a masterpiece by itself.

I was not particularly familiar with Salsa music and I had never heard any music by Ruben Blades. A friend purchased a concert ticket for me to see him at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. I was so impressed by the live music I heard, much of which was from this CD, that I went directly to the music shop and purchased this CD the same night. That was 2 years ago, and this remains one of my most favourite CD's. It's absolutely beautiful!!! I have since become a die hard fan and I have all of his CDs in my music collection now.

"Tiempos" is like a good book, you just can't put it down or in this case though, take it out of the CD player. This is a CD to be listen to not just to play it. I find the song entitled "Vida" to be an inspiration, with words that when I listen to it, make me want to be more down to earth, a better person toward others.

Mr. Blades is the best artist in the industry and what an idol he is. I have been buying his music since day one and I will keep on buying it since his is the Elite in its class.

Aqui Ruben demuestra de nuevo todo su talento como canta autor. Diversifica su repertorio saliendo del genero tropical, componiendo y ejecutando magistralmente toda clase de musica. Hay que tener en cuenta que este no es un disco bailable, ni de musica que vas a oir en la radio. Como muchas de sus canciones, es para sentarse a escuchar la letra y musica, y no es popular con los djs. El tipo es un maestro y un orgullo para Panama. No mas falta que viviera lo que predica en sus canciones, pero, quien este libre de pecado.... Espero por nuestro bien que NO VUELVA a ensuciarse con la politica y que siga produciendo buena musica.

May add anything else!! Being a fan of Ruben Blades, and a musican myself, am I biased? Of course not. It is one of his best pieces of music yet. What else is under your sleve Ruben?

Flamenco from Spain.......2006-04-08

Diego "El Cigala" is one of the of the foremost current proponents of flamenco music coming from Spain. This double disc finds him in fine form.The first twelve songs on the track listing are studio recordings found on disc 1 and the last six make up disc 2 which was recorded live from theTeatro Real in Madrid one summer day in 2002. There is plenty of variety as is indicated by the track listing of bulerias , tangos etc. Essentially it is the full spectrum of flamenco but with a mix of tradition and contemporary flavors. Take for example the buleria "Gitanos de la cava" where the jazz trumpet and bass lines create a nuevo flamenco sound that mixes perfectly with "El Cigalas" mournful vocals. The beautiful and lively guajira "Senor del aire" features Cuban pianist Bebo Valdes playing a prominent part of the song on the ivory keys for a great song dedicated to Juan Valderrama. Valdes is featured on several other songs most notably on the bolero "Amar y vivir" that has a Cuba meets Spain feel to it. "La fuente de Bebo" is a happy buleria that has a rhythmic interchange between "El Cigala" and Valdes that is similar to the fine disc the two recorded entitled "Lagrimas Negras" which is also recommended.The use of flute infuses a jazzy Middle Eastern flair to many of the songs which results in more nuevo flamenco meets old school flamenco. The chorus and palmas(hand clapping )can be find throughout the disc often in exuberant fashion. The live from Teatro Real disc 2 is pure flamenco and features the only solea on both discs entitled "Fuente de conocimiento" where the guitar is pure and compliments "El Cigalas" voice.The fandango closing out the disc entitled "El dia que yo me muero"is dedicated to matador Curro Romero much to the delight of the audience for a fitting ending to a nice double disc. A pleasing addition to any flamenco collection , this CD is pure flamenco with only hints of nuevo flamenco. Recommended for the flamenco afficionado of today.

Santarosa's ego and insensitivity is boundless. Here he buys Tito Rodriguez' old masters and has the bad taste to record duets with one of the kings of Salsa. He has no voice and no

A great collection, one of the finest ever, by a great artist in homage of another great one. The quality of the sound, the careful selection, and the interpretation are without match. A wonderful balance between boleros and guarachas. I've been listening to it for a few years now, and never get tired of it.

Este repertorio es precioso, y difícil de hallar en el mercado. Canciones picarescas o sentimentales, deliciosamente pasadas de moda. Muy bien cantadas por Lilian de Celis; los arreglos orquestales se exceden a veces en efectos instrumentales, distrayéndonos de la canción misma, pero es una queja menor. Lo que sí es una queja mayor, es que el sonido es infame: ésto merece una remasterización decente. Además, este cd no ofrece ninguna información sobre la artista, ni sobre las canciones y sus autores. Mis 3 estrellas son exclusivamente para la música y Lilian de Celis.
