Founded in 1977, the well-traveled Sierra Maestra celebrate 25 years together with the release of Rumbero Soy. The ensemble's classic instrumentation of tres, guiro, clave, guitar, bongo, trumpet, maracas, and vocal chorus comes in loud and clear. Produced by Anglo guitarist Chris Birkett, the group performs with special Cuban and American guests. Jazz guitar whiz Marc Ribot lends his twangy, spacey licks to the peppery title track and "Sevilla de Cana Brava." Buena Vista Social Club superstars Ibrahim Ferrer and Omara Portuondo lend their vibrant voices to four songs, including the picturesque "Sabina Gomez" and the romantic "Convergencia." The group's spirited lead vocalists Alberto Virgilio Valdes and José Antonio "Maceo" Rodriguez keep the rumba and son montuno grooves flowing on the other tracks. This is another outstanding disc from one of the top Cuban musical groups around. The disc begins with a lively , rich in percussion and horns song entitled " La Caminadora" where the chorus is as captivating as the lead vocals by Alberto Virgilio Valdes. As in many Cuban songs the subject of the song is almost secondary because anything can be turned into a song. Check out the included bilingual lyrics if you don't believe me. An interesting feature of this disc is the diversity of vocalists that make for a disc that sounds like many different artists all bound by a cultural Cuban thread. There are heavyweight guest vocalists featured like BVSC alumni Ibrahim Ferrer and Omara Poruona who lend their exceptional talents to the project. The disc is a celebration of life and would be an exciting addition to any serious collector of Cuban music's library. The longevity of the group speaks to their excellence although the personal featured is different from some ot their other discs. The addition of "new" blood keeps the sound as fresh today as in it's inception twenty five years ago. This is a nice mixture of musical styles that features son, rumba, salsa and boleros. "Camino como Chencha" features two vocalists, as in several other songs , in which their is a beautiful interchange between Luis Barzaga and Omara Portuondo, who sounds surprisingly like the late great Celia Cruz. The collaboration by all of the musicians is a sheer delight and one to surely make you happy and put you in a festive mood. This is a highly recommended disc. If by some chance you have not heard of Sierra Maestra or are new to Cuban music than look no further for a disc as near to perfection within it's genre as possble. This is authentic, exuberant Cuban music. This is vital music that is needed in any collection of World music. The booklet is outstanding with complete lyrics in Spanish and English, complete musical credit and good color photographs of the members are also included. Buy this now for a happy musical experience; no Spanish language profiency is needed to get your feet and body moving to the wonderful tropical sounds of Cuban music.

La más reciente producción de Sierra Maestra, ampliamente conocidos entre la musica cubana demuestran porque se han mantenido 25 años entre las preferencias de todos los fanaticos de musica cubana en el mundo. La version con los duetos con Omara Portuondo e Ibrahim Ferrer es magnifica. "Convergencia" y "Llora como Yo lloré", con su solo de guitarra, son de las mejores del disco. Lo recomiendo totalmente.

Great New York Salsero.......2002-01-04

This album is better than his last. Unfortunately, this title is one you will need to look all over town for because it is so rare (I live in NYC and had to buy it second hand because I couldn't find one in stores). D'Mingo is great. He has not sold out and replaced his background music with the predictable, monotnous electronic drum beats and instruments that are so common is Salsa these days. An added bonus is that he actually can play the keyboard.

Music of "Light" and Love.......2000-07-31

This is an outstanding CD! With the recent "Latin Explosion" on the US scene this is truly one CD to have on your shelf! The song that got me hooked was "Cree Mi Amor". It was featured on the daytime soap opera, Guiding Light as the first song that Danny and Michelle Santos danced to as husband and wife. Beautiful and breathtaking are two words to describe this CD.

FOLKLOYUMA: "THE RUMBA" - Music From Oriente de Cuba.......2000-05-30

This is a great CD released by the "NIMBUS" label who also recorded Oriente's famous "Familia Valera Miranda". "FOLKLOYUMA" proves that the western provinces of Cuba (La Habana, Matanzas and even Santa Clara) do not have a monopoly in the rumba, guaguanco, columbia and other afro-cuban folkloric rhythms. I recommend this surprising compilation.
