Customer Reviews:
Remembering Zapata.......2000-05-08
If you like high energy Rock en Espanol mixed with lyrics that sing of revolutionary causes, this is a CD for you. This band plays a nice blend of ska, reggae, ragamuffin rapping and hard core punk puntuated by percussion and horns. The bands strength are it's biting lyrics which sing of injustices, historical glimpses of the Spanish Civil War, the KKK and Frida Kahlo, among other themes. There is one song in English (and Spanish) entitled "Spanish Bombs" that has a pop tune quality that is sung by the female of the group. Another song in English is called "Conscience Call" which is reminiscent of the "Clash" The standout song is the title track which begins with an Azteca sounding conch shell and flute backed by a pounding drum before they begin to rock. The song is about revolution and the spirit of Zapata, tierra y libertad. A superb song that should be heard by all Rock en Espanol fans. Another good song is a homage of sorts to Frida Kahlo, the famous Mexican painter who lived a tortured existence because of an accident that left her crippled. She made the best of life marrying Diego Rivera and dedicating her life to painting and left leaning politics. There are several guest musicians of note including Manu Chao and other members of the defunct French/Spanish band "Mano Negra". They followed this CD up with another release entitled "Contra-Revolution Ave" whose title pokes fun at the famous tourist street visited in Tijuana. Tijuana No is message music with a beat.
