An excellent artist steps out on her own.......2007-03-19

For years I've known Mayra Casales as the percussionist for Regina Carter's ensemble. While I thoroughly enjoyed her in that role I never suspected the depth of her talent. "Woman on Fire: Mujer Ardiente" makes it clear that it's well and truly time for her to step into her own spotlight.

On this recording Casales shows off her skill and her range. Not only as a percussionist, but also as a fine singer (so fine, in fact, that she stands well with guest singer Carmen Lundy). The collection of songs on this CD are a variety of Latin-jazz pieces with the exception of a pair of beautiful ballads sung by Casales, most notably her solo voice-and-piano arrangement of "For All We Know" which closes out the CD. On the Latin numbers you really get to hear and feel Casales' Cuban roots come to the forefront as she demonstrates tricky interplay and changes as on the charanga-charged "Is It Love" (co-composed by Casales and Lundy). Mellower selections are no less enjoyable, like "Pipo" (featuring Regina Carter on violin) which feels like a cool Mojito on a warm Caribbean beach.

Fans of Cuban music and Latin-jazz now have a new artist to keep their eyes on. pick this CD up and look forward to more releases from the talented Mayra Casales.

when you hear merengue bombeao such as Mania, La Makina, Karis, Elvis Crespo you love the way the sing and sound. well Brassa Ardiente will knock you of your feet. this has been a great production and it couldn't had been releazed at a better time. don't get me wrong it wont be a while until they become a top group, but with its talent and potential of a great merengue group they'll get there. Much props and respect

Album Description

A program of seldom-heard but exquisitely beautiful sacred vocal music of the Latin American Baroque. The program focuses on texts that reflect the position and plight of women in that period, as inspired by the dreamlike poetry of Sister Juana Inés de la Cruz. Religious and profane arias (or, as they were called, divine and human tones) seemed to bridge the barriers of that society, religious music being virtually indistinguishable from that of court or theater. The very life of composers at this time was often a game of mirrors between the sacred and the mundane. A naturalized citizen of Mexico, soprano Valentina Álvarez was born in Uruguay, where she first studied. She has performed with various ensembles in Uruguay, Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia and Mexico, specializing in early music through Mozart. Her interpretations have been well received by Latin American critics.

El repertorio que se aborda en este disco merece la oportunidad de ser interpretado, grabado y, por supuesto, escuchado, en una versión más acabada. Es una pena que estas obras no llamen la atención de músicos especializados que puedan ofrecer una verdadera semblanza de la música. El ensamble de músicos deja mucho que desear... o quizá sea el sonido de la grabación, que también es pobre... la soprano Valentina Álvarez es una pena de oír: no musicalidad, problemas de afinación, de emisión... simplemente no está al nivel de integrarse en un proyecto que pretenda ser profesional. En resumen: música interesante muy mal ejecutada.
