Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09

Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.

5 out of 5 stars Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02

Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.

5 out of 5 stars A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06

John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.

There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11

Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

5 out of 5 stars " one of cinema's greatest composers...John Barry".......2001-07-06

2 out of 5 stars A lot of 70's Music.......2005-09-20

If you really like 70's themes, you should like this CD. It was a little too dated for me.

5 out of 5 stars Bond and beyond on an excellent career retrospective........1998-08-25

Imitation is often considered the greatest form of flattery. John Barry's oeuvre has been sampled by dozens of contemporary musical artists, and he is often credited as being the godfather of "trip hop" (check recent albums by Portishead and Mono to hear the Barry influence). The Academy-award winning composer has been producing music for over forty years, but this collection focuses on the artist's most commercially successful period, the 1960's. The instantly recognizable and inimitable Barry style is well documented throughout 23 varied compositions. Selections range from classic to obscure, and include all the title tracks from the early James Bond soundtracks. Barry's film and television music is the defining sound of that era - lush orchestrations, cool jazzy riffs, pure excitement. "Themeology" is an excellent starting point for the novice collector and equally attractive for the long-time admirer.

5 out of 5 stars Uplifting and beautiful.......2006-02-21

Good traveling music, good working/thinking/reading music, good do-nothing music. It's not jazz, more new-age but not really...it's hard to describe. Beautiful African-themed harmonies of some voice and mostly music, with African animal sounds or weather sounds in the background, that combine with perfect rhythms to create a thoroughly good CD. Worth getting if you enjoy any of the above! By the way, "Temba" means "Hope".

I like everything on this album except one song. I think that is #5, or whichever one there is a woman singing...I don't know what she's saying & it's a different pace than other songs so it is not as pleasing to me.

If you'd like a travel-with-kids CD that does not have anyone singing silly tunes in an overtly cheery tone, this is good for that too - the occasional animal sounds and the rhythms are fun.

Here's steel-pan player Andy Narell performing with a stellar band from South Africa. He wrote 11 of the 12 songs on this two-CD set, and they all display his distinctive compositional style of globally mapped contemporary jazz. For that, the band sounds easily as good, if not better, than any Narell has assembled, including the Caribbean Jazz Project, and his early 1980s band with guitarist Steve Erquiaga. The first CD features the Narell with a couple of notable solos from the sidemen, particularly on "Jenny's Room," but it is on the second disc, with its longer tunes, that the rest of the band is allowed more solo space. They don't disappoint. It's also on the latter disc--on "Chakalaka" and "Mpule" particularly--where the Johannesburg township groove that permeates the music of Hugh Masekela, Abdullah Ibrahim, and so many others from South Africa is in Narell's grasp. Guitarist Louis Mhlanga is a revelation on "Chakalaka" and "Little Secrets," and every time the spotlight is turned on pianist Andile Yenana, he stands out with thoughtful solos. --Mark Ruffin

4 out of 5 stars rhythm in the blood.......2002-12-21

Usually I don't like this steel-drum-stuff. But this time I made the right choice. This music goes straight from your ears into your legs. Whenever I listen to this cd I can't stand still. I can literally visualize how the crowd went mad while they were on that concert. It's really worth listening at and maybe you may like steel-drums after all too. Have a try.

5 out of 5 stars My First Andy Narell Title.......2002-01-20

I first heard of Andy Narell while I was listening to the NPR radio program, 'The World'. The played serveral tracks from this cd and I fell in love with it instantly. Since I have purchased it, it has remained in my cd player almost contantly. It is good to listen to just about any time. I have not heard any of Andy's previous cd's so I have nothing else of his to compare it to, but I can say that I really enjoy this cd!

4 out of 5 stars Solid Live Effort.......2001-07-23

When I first heard Andy Narell on the radio in Chicago in 1979, I knew I had to add his music to my nascent jazz collection. This was right at the beginning of his career, before his Windham Hill/Hip Pocket association, before the Caribbean Jazz Project, before his Heads Up International association. He was on a tiny, now-defunct indie jazz label, the name of which slips my mind, and he was playing stuff I'd never heard before. Yes, I'd heard steel drum music before, and yes, I'd heard jazz before, but never steel drum jazz.

To these ears, his music was unique, and it has remained so throughout four decades. Indeed, he pioneered a new type of fusion--jazz and up-beat Caribbean. Dizzy and others had fused jazz with Afro-Cuban music, and Egberto Gismonti was fusing jazz with Afro-Brazilian music, but no one was doing what Narell did. If the trail he blazed hasn't had a lot of followers (one thinks of Monty Alexander's two ivory and steel discs and the Oliver Lake Steel Quartet's Kinda Up--a very fine release, by the way), it's probably as much because of the difficulty of mastering this approach as well as Narell's unique command of his instrument as any deficiency in Narell's music per se.

The jazz press has generally dismissed Narell, regarding him as Not A Serious Artist. And he's taken quite a beating from them on this latest release. No, it's not his best and it's hard to listen to both discs straight through without at least a little boredom setting in, but there's still a lot of very good music here. If you're at all interested in what I call jazz beat (real jazz filtered through the lens of some indiginous folk music), you really should check out Andy Narell. This is probably as good a place to start as any, seeing that his best discs, his Windham Hill releases Slow Motion (available as an import), Light in Your Eyes, Stickman, and Little Secrets are no longer available. Of the Heads Up releases, Beyond the Bridge is probably the best, but it's a little stripped down, lacking the impact of his usual kick-butt band.

In any case, do yourself a favor and check out this remarkable world musician.

5 out of 5 stars I'm dancing.......2001-06-08

Listen, I know some people do not care for steel pans and for those of us who do, this is one great album. The band is fantastic and it will have you dancing and grooving. This is one of the best and groovy records I have heard from Narell in a long time even though I truly loved his last album Fire In The Engine Room as well.

1 out of 5 stars A poor imitation...............2001-05-18

Wow..... I'm so dissapointed...

This album is a very bad imitation of the great music that Narell made with Steve Erquiaga, Keith Jones, Kenneth Nash, Will Kennedy, etc.......

5 out of 5 stars More Classic Fela Reissued.......2003-07-12

"Live in Amsterdam" is one of Fela's best albums with Egypt 80. Unlike most titles in the MCA reissue series, this one is not two albums on one CD, but is instead three songs and nearly 80 minutes of music from a November 28, 1983 concert in Amsterdam. While some of Fela's material with Egypt 80 can be too keyboard driven for my tastes, here the band grooves like classic Afrika 70 -- multi-layered percussion, funky rhythms and intricate horn play. This is not only one of Fela's best live albums (I prefer it easily to "VIP" -- see my review), but I would rank it along with "Original Sufferhead" and "Beasts of No Nation" as his best efforts from the 1980s. Of course, all of the Fela reissues are really indispensable, and you should get them while you can.

5 out of 5 stars Great performance, song selection, energy.......2006-10-29

I had the privilege to buy this DVD at the Culture show last year at Iron Horse Music Hall in Northampton, Mass. I watched it the next morning and it re-ignited the fire and energy i felt so deeply at the show. One issue I have is that the camera only shows the one keyboardist when there are actually two. It neglects the musician taking all of the solos on the keys...
Other than this it is a great dvd.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome live album!.......2006-02-23

5 out of 5 stars Let it be known, this CD is the bomb.......2002-12-07

the wildly talented Joseph Hill and Culture lands a dynamite performance using top notch contemporary production from a strong backing band to deliver some very intense grooves. Regardless of whether you are into reggae, you will recognize the strong personality emanating from the music that is uniquely Culture.

5 out of 5 stars Live Reggae Show at its best.......2002-11-27

Having watched the Live Show myself Live in Cape Town South Africa, This CD not only brings back the unique experience of that unforgettable night but appeals to all reggae lovers and followers of Culture specifically. Joseph Hill defies his age by giving a vibrant and inspired performance so relevant to the songs he sings about. "Jah Jah see dem a come", "Addis Abbaba" and "International Herb" are delivered in such hyped up versions that you can only imagine what the set was like. A must have for Joseph Hill and Culture fans.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Triumphant Free Spirit.......2001-11-09

Awadagin Pratt is a free spirit. Not only does he sport luxuriant dreadlocks and sit on a tiny stool, but he also played piano incredibly well. Pratt can do whatever he wants around the margins, because he rendered an intensely dramatic interpretation of these immortal pieces, with a distinctly improvisational air in the rhythms.

5 out of 5 stars Provocative and Beautiful.......2001-11-09

Mr. Pratt is an exceptional performer with a talent for stylizing within the most heatedly virtuosic material. His willful manipulation of tempos and dynamics, his varied articulation, as well as astonishing brilliance and energy, made for a provocative, electrifying performance.

5 out of 5 stars Superb!.......2001-11-08

Acclaimed pianist Awadagin Pratt, known for his unorthodox style -- he sits on a bench very low to the floor. He also eschews the traditional tuxedo in favor of brightly colored shirts and gives the old masters something beyond the standard treatment. However, it's his splendid performance that really counts. His astonishing brilliance and beauty, the romance and lyricism, the incredible technique and prodigious talent, and his superb and imaginative repertoire transport listeners, levitating them into a spiritual dimension, where materials are immaterial.

5 out of 5 stars Electrifying Performance.......2001-11-08

Award-winning pianist Awadagin Pratt plays with a full-bodied intensity that can be at turns intimate and grandly heart-wrenching. It's truly a electrifying performance.

1 out of 5 stars Tsk tsk.......2001-10-13

Sadly, after repeated examination, it indeed appears that the soon-to-be 36-year-old Pratt indeed splices his recordings--i.e., he takes the best individual moments he can come up with to achieve superficial result. Personally, I prefer "honest" classical musicians when I listen to classical, as is generally the standard, though I suppose there may be those who simply want to hear what they want to hear for whatever reason.

5 out of 5 stars Your heart will sing too!.......2006-07-21

East African orphans sing gospel songs in English and their native tongue.
My sister got this recording from a used music store. That was ten years ago, and our family has loved it and shared it with so many people. This year i had the opportunity to hear the 27th African Children's Choir live, in a concert near our home. As a result, i'm going to fly to the UK a couple weeks earlier than i had planned, just so i can hear them again in Edinburgh! Do a search for their website if you want to feel good about the world. Amazon has several of their more recent albums available, and DVDs too.
Incidentally, my favorite track, by far, is "O Sifuni Mungu"
