Experience Hendrix brings together the major singles with a stack of majestic album tracks and the career-defining live Woodstock version of "The Star Spangled Banner" on a fat 20-tracker. While best used as a sampler to direct new listeners to the immortal Are You Experienced, Electric Ladyland, and so on, the CD (which supplants the short-lived Ultimate Experience collection) does hang together as a listen. Its blend of Hendrix the rocker and Hendrix the underrated soul man is suggestive, painting a picture of a multifaceted genius and transcending its plainly mercenary origins. In the end, its effect--like that of all Hendrix's best records--is to remind us of a Jimi very, very much alive. --Rickey WrightAlbum Details

Jimi Hendrix: A man whose spirit and music is immortal........2007-06-17
On this 20-song compilation, you get such popular tracks as "Purple Haze", "Fire", and Jimi's highest-charter, the timeless, Bob Dylan cover "All Along The Watchtower". Of course, Jimi was influenced by a variety of music, as he shows in the incredible blues stylings of "Red House" and "Voodoo Child (Slight Return"). You have such trippy songs as the soul-influenced "Crosstown Traffic", a personal favorite, the somewhat-dirty and ever-groovy "Foxey Lady", the brilliant masterpiece, "If 6 Was 9" and the "it's-so-trippy-I-don't-know-what-to-say" work of art that is "Bold As Love". Then there's the eternal beauty of "Little Wing", the funky, post-humous, "Dolly Dagger" and his immortal genius of the Woodstock recording of "Star Spangled Banner". Of course, there are more than that, but this just goes to show what a musician Jimi Hendrix was!
All in all, an excellent collection that should belong in every classic rock fan's library. After this, you might wanna check out "Band of Gypsys", as it shows Jimi's stunning live work. Although artists like Jimi Hendrix, Cream and Led Zeppelin may stir controversy, I always believe that it's what you personally think of the music. And I, for one, believe Jimi Hendrix's music is timeless, awesome and extremely influential. Hope you all love this one, peace!

As emblematic of its time as of its sorcerer-like creator, 1967's Are You Experienced unleashed Jimi Hendrix onto a world in the midst of such cultural and musical shakeups that it really didn't seem as "far out" as it actually was. It wasn't just Hendrix's virtuosic skill as a pure player that was so impressive; it was, even more, the range and scope of sheer sound that he coaxed, cajoled, and ripped out of his instrument. "Purple Haze," "Manic Depression," and "I Don't Live Today" filled ears with indelible sonic images, and songs like "Foxey Lady" and "Fire" pointed the way toward a new brand of rock-charged soul music. And how about a hand for drummer Mitch Mitchell? --Billy AltmanCustomer Reviews:

The Jimi album.......2007-05-15
The hits are here and there is surprisingly no filler. Even though it came out during the zenith of the psychedelic craze, it is far less trippy than Electric Ladyland two years later. The focus of this record is thoroughly blues, r'n'b, and rock based. Even Third Stone From The Sun has enough of a point and vibe to not succumb to the obvious psychedelic theme. The additional tracks mostly lifted from Smash Hits are a nice bonus, especially Red House, one of his greatest songs.
This is the definitive Hendrix album and one of the most important rock records because it introduced this phenomenal artist and his shocking and spectacular guitar brilliance which continues to provide inspiration for guitarists today. Without Hedrix, you can write off dozens of famous guitarists to come in his wake who tried to recreate just some of his magic. If there is one necessary Hendrix album (and there are only a few in total), this is it.
I Am Now Experienced. Are You?.......2007-04-13
Also reccomended: Band of Gypsys, later work of Hendrix if you don't have the means of finding the album at least download Machine Gun.

Excellent Debut, Excellent Re-issue.......2007-03-12
First off, the music itself is timeless. Who hasn't heard "Foxy Lady," "Hey Joe" or "Purple Haze"? Tracks 1-11 represent the breadth of what was the original US LP version of the album. And man, is it great. There's variety galore in this. From the tender approach on "The Wind Cries Mary" to the psychedelic jazz-like excursion of "Third Stone From The Sun," there are plenty of avenues that this album embarks on. This ain't no blues rock plodfest. This is an experience in and of itself.
But wait, there's more!
Tracks 12-17 are the 1997 bonus tracks; some were originally on the UK but not US version of the album, while others stem from other sources. But, unlike some bonus tracks that only sully the content of the album, these go along quite well with the first 11 songs. Certain songs, like "Stone Free," are bursting with energy. Others have a bluesier vibe but its actually rather refreshing to hear that after the mindblowing nature of the album.
And the packaging itself is quite commendable. Long (albeit tremendously sycophantic) liner notes, lyrics and release dates for the songs. Well done!
Is there anything bad? Well, if psychedelic rock isn't your thing, you might not particularly like the album anyway.
Overall, this is a great example of a re-issue. They restore the album, add bonus material that compliments the original work and give us the best liner notes possible. Oh, and the CD itself has a groovy design as well.
A must-have!

Bursting with ideas and energy, Jimi Hendrix's second album release of 1968 (following Axis: Bold as Love) was a double-LP set that showcased virtually everything the guitar genius had to offer: blistering blues ("Voodoo Chile"), galaxy-patrolling space jams ("1983... A Merman I Should Turn to Be"), psychedelic soul ("Crosstown Traffic"), and skyscraping rock ("Voodoo Child (Slight Return)"). In the midst of all this was even a hit song--Hendrix's remarkable reading of Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower," featuring a series of baton-passing guitar solos, all distinct and brilliant. Seemingly diffuse when first released; in hindsight, kaleidoscopically eclectic. --Billy AltmanCustomer Reviews:
YES! This is Jimi's most diverse and BEST.......2007-07-26
Of course it is an uneven album, with some songs some might consider filler (the same thing is said about Zeppelin Phisical Grafitti, for me the best of Zep), but the songs that NO ONE can argue about are absolute masterpieces of rock: Electric Ladyland, Vodoo Chile, Burning of the Midlight Lamp, Rainy Day, Still Raining, 1983, Crosstown Traffic, Dylan's All along the Watchtower, Voodoo Chile (Slight Return). In these songs you find Hendrix playing to the extreme and experimenting with sounds, you will not find music like this anywhere in his previous albums. They are the reason for making this album the definitive Hendrix. (you can find this album in the Classic Albums TV series, with Dark Side of The Moon, Joshua Tree, Catch a Fire and other rock highlights).
In this album you can learn more about Hendrix awesome playing and sound effects, you find studio polished versions, studio raw versions, excellent live versions where you can hear the few but privileged audience grooving on, how I wish I'd been there!
Yeah sure, it is sometimes nonsense 60s lyrics and experimental trips, but well it is an album made in the sixties, so like The Wall is an album from the 70s and Tatoo You is from the 80s and OK Computer is from the 90s. A specific decade a rock album is made is not a criteria to review it as bad or good.
For me and the majority of people and critics, this is Hendrix best. I absolute recommend it to anyone looking for something more than Hendrix's well known (and excellent) songs.

Not his best - not a masterpiece.......2007-04-12
First, it is not his best studio album. That would be his first. I would put this after Axis: Bold As Love as well. My biggest gripe with this, as with much of the sixties music, is that it is so dated and trippy sounding that it just wears away at you. Buried beneath stoned lyrics about breathing underwater and psychedelic (yech!) trickery is some brilliant guitar work, it's just a shame that you have to wade through the dopey stuff to get to the nugget below. I'll no doubt piss plenty of folks off, but I don't consider Jimi a particularly great songwriter. He had the riffs, no doubt, but his lyrics tended towards the silly sixties b.s. that I truly can't stand. Still, he did put together some beauties and there are some on this album as well.
The first four songs are solid, mostly because the first track is short and to the point despite not really being much of a song as much as a lot of effects. The soulful Have You Ever Been (To Electric Ladyland) is sweet and Crosstown Traffic simply rocks, ala Fire and so many of Jimi's most inspired moments when he cuts the crap and just lays down the rock. Voodoo Chile is a slow blues that just simmers like a delicious stew punctuated by Jimi's hummingbird wail that about shatters glass. From there, the next five songs are good, as well, with the only questionable inclusion being Noel's Little Miss Strange. Burning of the Midnight Lamp is very good and the guitar work on Gypsy Eyes and Come On (Let The Good Times Roll) are pure Jimi brilliance.
The biggest problem I have with Electric Ladyland begins afterward, on what used to be the third side of the record. Despite a nice guitar melody on 1983, the lyrics, studio/psychedelic silliness, and the whole dated sixties vibe just kills anything else that is contained on these three tracks, and there are some nice guitar moments at the tail end of Moon, Turn the Tides, just to mention one spot. This whole section is little more than self-indulgence and filler, something left for headphone orgasms and acid trips.
The fourth section of the recording might be the best with the second half of Rainy Day (called Still Raining, Still Dreaming) kicking it off, followed by the final three strong cuts which culminate in one of Jimi's crowning achievements, Voodoo Child (Slight Return).
This is a mixed bag of stuff. I love Jimi Hendrix - at times. But there are reasons I won't just carte blanche this five stars. This album seems to lack direction, as if no one was there to tell him (or no one had the courage) "Hey Jimi...what is that crap?" It was all so groovy and so hip and so trippy, man, that no one bothered to question Jimi's self-indulgence in the peace, love, and grooviness of the times. If you want proof that perhaps even Jimi realized the excesses herein, look at the songs he recorded after this one. Those songs were concise and much more straight ahead lyrically and structurally. There is much to love on this recording but there is also much that I don't care for at all. For this low price, you won't regret the purchase, but I wonder how spectacular this often sprawling document might've been had someone cut away the trippy filler and stuck to the meat.
Okay, now you can click "no." Peace, man.

Jimi Hendrix's second album doesn't resonate through rock history the way its gatecrashing predecessor, Are You Experienced?, does. In places, it almost seems as if Hendrix is cruising, albeit sublimely. Yet it's a vital album, containing some of rock's molten milestones. There's the fluid psychedelia of "Castles Made of Sand," the viciously funky "Little Miss Lover," and the so-beautiful-it-hurts "Little Wing." Hendrix really hits altitude with "If 6 Was 9," where he waves his "freak flag high" over a tidal wave of guitar and a cacophonous army of Moroccan flutes, and he ends with "Bold As Love," based around Hendrix's typically far-fetched hankering for the axis of the planet to be tilted, thereby transforming life on earth. It works up into a head-melting frenzy of distorted guitar, a precursor to the staggeringly expansive leap forward he would take with 1968's Electric Ladyland. Hendrix dreamed the impossible and achieved it on his guitar. --David StubbsCustomer Reviews:

Zero 7's ability to conjure beautiful lullabies with all the romance of 1960s French pop (as found on their debut LP, Simple Things) would have made them the toast of soundtrack composers and chill-out connoisseurs the world over. Unfortunately, two Frenchmen beat Henry Binns and Sam Hardaker to the title of "masters of comedown cool," leaving the London duo to be forever called "the British Air." And this is fair; the similarities between Zero 7's lush cinematic soundscapes and those of Air's Moon Safari and the Virgin Suicides score are so strong as to sound almost intentional. Nonetheless, their debut is a truly gorgeous album. It has all the tried and tested atmospheric tricks--bleeps and whooshes layered over plodding Fender Rhodes chords, swathes of strings and tender trumpet parps--but it's Binns and Hardaker's languid grooves and the soft melancholy of their melodies that make dream-state instrumentals "Give It Away" and "Polaris" utterly enchanting. The real power of Simple Things, however, is in its songs. As beautiful as the ambient strains are, when laid beneath the seductive vocals of Australian diva Sia on the ethereal "Destiny" or the heart-breaking "Distractions," their potency becomes apparent. --Dan GennoeAlbum Description

Chill - Out Virtuosos at Work.......2007-08-01
The problem with most ambient music is that it is far too passive; produced with the full intention of staying in the background without being intrusive. "simple things" does not fall into that category. There is a soul, a backbone if you will, to the production. This album is just sexy and is a perfect soundtrack to any amorous couple's bedroom.

As a member of the acclaimed Animal Collective, Noah Lennox (a.k.a. Panda Bear) has for years been making music that mixes experimental structures with a pure '60s pop sensibility. On his second solo album of looped and layered experimental post-pop, he shows considerable skill in crafting songs that retain the essence of psychedelia while having been crafted with loop-based home recording methods. The album's finest moment has to be "Bros," a slowly percolating and unapologetically lovely twelve-and-a-half-minute song. Like Brian Wilson lost in a K-hole, gorgeous harmonies soaked in echo bump up against each other until they reach a rhythmic, fascinating crescendo. Elsewhere, Panda Bear's music tends toward the same effect a tad too much, often without the same transcendent quality. Person Pitch has fabulous moments aplenty, though (as with Captain Beefheart's 1968 Strictly Personal) one does wish that fewer reverb-soaked vocals were used, or that they were used even further, pushed into complete abstract dissociation. --Mike McGonigalAlbum Description
Animal Collective member Panda Bear (a.k.a. Noah Lennox) boldly returns with his long-awaited third solo record Person Pitch. Years in the making, Person Pitch marks a dramatic departure from Panda Bear's previous solo record Young Prayer. The acoustic instruments of Young Prayer have been replaced with samplers and electronics.Fusing Panda's dramatic life changes over the past few years (marriage, moving to Lisbon, becoming a father) with his ever-increasing sonic palette (standouts include Caetano Veloso, Berlin Techno, Scott Walker, and Kylie Minogue), Person Pitch is suffused with the kind of feel good modern toe-tapping pop that seems harder and harder to find these days.
Paw Tracks feels that the passing of time will show Panda Bear's Person Pitch sitting alongside the great solo albums of Paul McCartney, George Michael, and Ghostface Killah. Luckily we don't have to wait.

Person Pitch begins with "Comfy in Nautica", which both defines the album's sound and provides an accessible jumping-off point, like any good opener should. To get an idea of what the sound is like this time around, picture Brian Wilson singing in the middle of a car factory somewhere in the middle of Africa, with drums and noises from outside sometimes working their way into the mix, and the occasional guest appearance by some thick, dubby basslines.
"Comfy in Nautica" itself is pretty simple; some clattering industrial percussion, a towering looped vocal sample and Lennox's heavily reverbed vocals. These same elements show up repeatedly elsewhere on the album, but thankfully there's much more to it than just that. Take, for instance, the ferocious tabla opener to "Good Girl/Carrots", the second of two twelve-minute epics on the album, and one of my favorite tracks. This is followed by a loping, easy section. The lyrics here seem to reference Mitch Hedburg, before breaking off into a gentle debate with a music snob who's attempting to put Lennox down. Then the track drifts underwater, accompanied by chimes and heavy bass as Panda exhorts us to "Take a risk just for yourselves/and wade into the deepest of the oceans". The track ends on an exultant note, the shimmering chimes drawing it to its close.
In fact, I'm pretty sure Person Pitch is worth buying for "Carrots" alone. But other tracks like the whirling, giddy guitar jam of "Bros" and the smooth echoes of "I'm Not" are equally elating. It's easily the happiest album released this year, and probably the most conventionally listenable thing any member of Animal Collective has ever created.

After the disorganized and often unlistenable Alan Douglas-produced reissues in the '70s and '80s, MCA has been releasing the vast Hendrix archives in an intelligent and methodical manner. Blues is a perfect example, making the case that--on top of everything else--Jimi Hendrix was one fine blues guitarist. Combining the fluid lines of B.B. King with the spikiness of Hubert Sumlin and the crying tone of Elmore James with his usual synapse-frying intensity, Hendrix manages to both honor the music tradition while remaining uniquely himself. These studio outtakes and warm-ups (plus one previously released track, the magnificent "Hear My Train a Comin'") include a playful "Mannish Boy," the slow burn of "Once I Had A Woman," and a metallic "Bleeding Heart." --Steven MirkinCustomer Reviews:

Why is current pop music so trash. The sound of Hendrix and his sidemen plus members of the Jimi Hendrix Experience and the Band of Gypsys are based on music theory and enjoyment. This is why Hendrix albums sold tens of millions in the 1970s while modern stars are lucky to push $10,000.00 in sales, even if they were listed high on the Billboard Top 20 Chart.
I can sleep better knowing James Marshall Hendrix's family will benefit from this era of original music Jimi composed and played during his short but electric career.
Collections as: Woodstock; Stone Free; Are You Experienced; and Hendrix in the West are just the start. Jimi Hendrix's estate has over 400 hours of previously unreleased matterial in bank vaults. Who could go wrong as 96.4% of Jimi Hendrix releases are quality matterial.
The power blues led to rock and roll music - - start with the basics. It is never uncommon to be turned off by a songs first impression. This is normal for most fans trying to internalize new matterial for the first time. Listen several times before you make a decision as to whether Jimi Hendrix's music is right for your life style. Regardless, Jimi made history. Thus, his songs are probably good. Try out Spanish Castle Magic if you want to get angry.

Born to be Reflective.................2007-02-05
Keeping on with rockin' selections - I have a most worthy biker fest celebration for all of you. Yes, it's Steppenwolf and John Kay as the master of ceremonies! Even as we speak- Metamorpho is getting out his shades and revving up his magic carpet to take journeys into the unknown. (Some say "Stay in your own mind Metamorpho, that is unknown enough for you"). I scoff at that. Wouldn't you?
So, what have we here? Gritty, husky, distictive vocals by John Kay. Motorcycles, motorcycle mamas, social commentary, political barbs and superb rock construction. Oh yes- and sex too. Guido would definitely approve. Steppenwolf was always a male-dominated dominion. However, political correctness aside - the music was just too damn good to give it a bad rap.
Of course we have here the great eternal staples of "Born to Be Wild" (is it really about riding a bike?) and "Magic Carpet Ride" (John Kay as house genie for sure). These songs reveal the elements which many songs afterwards would often employ. The musky organ grinding on one side and the guitar riffing on the other. All in the mix. All other instruments contribute- however, along with John's vocals, this was the "sound" of Steppenwolf.
Also, don't think that they weren't diverse. They could do a rock stroll like "Don't Step On the Grass, Sam" (anti-government) and "The Pusher" (anti-hard drug). Rock raves like "Rock Me" and "Hey Lawdy Mama". And soft rock ballads like "Snowblind Friend" (cocaine addiction) and "Tenderness" (abusive love relationships). Steppenwolf's song topics were not shallow or void of diversity, as we can see. A song in this compilation that I find quite good is "Screaming Night Hog". Listen to the interplay of instruments on this song. Amazing. They hit a groove and never let up. Listen to the guitar riff- the mirroring of the organ, the harmonica riff. The see-saw effect of the mix. Listen to this one loud.
Last, but not least, the incredible tri-umphant "Monster/Suicide/America".
John Kay's history lesson with tough questions indeed. An incredible work. One section seguing into another with their own distinctive pattern. The blend only adds to the urgency of the message. And, what about the message? Precise, clear, and as evident today as it was when it was written. Seems some things never change.
For anyone who loves rock - this collection is indispensible. Miss this one at your peril (mind you, stray embers are everywhere these days).
I guess that's it for now children. I have to now get busy formulating my Seer's lesson plan for T. He's doing well on tests though- but getting a B+ on the last one gave your beloved Seer great concern.

If you're looking at it, you should buy it!.......2007-06-29
Good stuff, start to finish. Favorites so far would be Noodle Soup and Been Too Long - both fun grooves. En Route is a musical image of it's title, reflective of a long and easy cruise behind the wheel. 51 Division is a powerfully fun romp. Smooth tunes on this collection also, like Closer and Easy Come, Easy Go. Waterline is a magnificent and dreamy tune, kind of like looking into the ripples on a pond.
Four 80 East continues to get better and better. Their creative use of sounds continues to be a trademark of their work. If you're familiar with their work, listening to this collection is both reassuring and surprising. You can tell it's them, but each tune is new and fresh.
Just got it in time for the 4th of July, but I can already tell that the wife and I will be spinning this one a lot. Perfect for an easy afternoon cookout or taking in a sunset.
What The.... WOW, What A CD!.......2007-06-13
Two Words: Out...Standing!.......2007-06-08
There are lots of interesting things going on in this album that you might not notice at first: It's intelligence, the unusual electronic flourishes, Rob DeBoer's stylish bass lines.... And mention must be made of Jon Stewart's saxophone. Many saxists force their leads--resulting in brassy, disarticulate solos. Stewart's sax is sweet and natural. His playing never sounds forced, and is wholly in sync with the cool F80E atmosphere.
En Route continues F80E's trademark melodic, interweaving instrumental parts that float on and over DeBoer's bass riffs. Where it might differ from their other albums is the way the individual tracks (quite different from one another, a la Round 3) all come together so well, forming an almost geometric whole. In that sense I believe it's their most mature effort yet. Maybe their best. And that's no small feat.
Four80East EnRoute -- more than "Noodle Soup".......2007-05-30
When I heard #4 - "En Route" - was coming out April 24, I had to have it. After several searches locally I turned to Amazon and within days it arrived in my mailbox.
Since then the CD has not left my Scion's CD player...
Let's admit it -- some albums have two, maybe three good pieces and the rest is filler. Not this album. Every tune is unique and the extra time the guys at 480E put into this album paid off. The entire album is cool-funky-smooth with a hint of trance and soothing deep bass. "Noodle Soup" is getting all of the air-time on smooth jazz stations, but there's so much more to this album.
"Double Down", "Been Too Long", "Closer", "Don't Look Back", "Waterline" and, my personal favorite, the title tune, "En Route". (Love that guitar riff that sneaks in and out, then, toward the end of the track, the riff is held, distorted and repeated until the tune ends...oooohh...love that.)
Love "En Route" -- a definite must-have if you're a fan-of-the-groove.

From Amazon.co.uk
With a voice like Stevie Wonder, a production sound that recalls the string-laden, slinky-bass disco of Studio 54, and a penchant for funky dance moves and outlandish hats, Jamiroquai's Jay Kay has successfully managed to straddle the underground and mainstream for the best part of 15 years. High Times brings together 19 of his band's hits to date, ranging from early 90s acid jazz classics "When You Gonna Learn," "Too Young To Die," and "Blow Your Mind," to later successes such as "Canned Heat," "Cosmic Girl," "Virtual Insanity," and on to recent songs from 2005 album Dynamite, such as "Feels Just Like It Should" and "7 Days In Sunny June." There are also two new tracks--the current single "Runaway" and the edgier "Radio," both of which continue the Jamiroquai tradition of mildly euphoric dancefloor disco-soul. Despite sticking to a formula of sorts over the years, the songs on this collection compliment each other well and form an impressive overview of one of the UK's most distinctive bands. --Danny McKennaAlbum Description

Even better than expected!~~WOW!.......2007-06-22
I am so glad I bought this CD with JAMIROQUAI's best hits (and plus some "extra" bonus songs are included).
If you like the sound of a sort of combo "jazz-rock" Cd then this is the one for you. JAMIROQUAI is a great band. It`s hard to truly define their sound, but whatever it is ,... it's GREAT!
As I said before, this band is a combo jazz-rock with a bit of alternative thrown in. The lead singer is AMAZING! The other band players are absolutely amazing too.
If you get this Cd, you wont be able to stop your feet from twitching to their beat. FUN!!!!!!
PS: if you have seen NAPOLEAN DYNAMITE then you will recognize track # 11!!---LOVE IT, and so will you!
One Of The Best Compilations.......2007-06-09

Amazing Band.......2007-03-12
I know you already have all of their songs. . .just buy this anyway........2007-03-10
What's also crazy is that I really can't believe that I've been listening to Jamiroquai for 14 years. Have I gotten that old?
5 Star rating = I promise you will enjoy this product. No regrets.
