Product Description
Voted by Guitar Player readers as 2007's Best Blues Guitarist, blues-rock guitar virtuoso, vocalist, and songwriter JOE BONAMASSA is set to release his seventh solo album, SLOE GIN, on August 21, 2007. Bonamassa's fourth release, the disc re-teams him with producer Kevin Shirley (Joe Satriani, Black Crowes, Aerosmith, Led Leppelin), who produced 2006's YOU & ME, which debuted at #1 on Billboard's Blues Chart in June of last year.
SLOE GIN effortlessly ranges through heavy blues and acoustic numbers alike, a textured flow that Bonamassa says was in part inspired by Rod Stewart's legendary 1969 debut solo LP. In the liner notes, Joe adds, "I sequenced the album as a throwback to the side A/side B set-up of vinyl records...listening to an album as a whole is a lost pastime. i wanted to bring that experience back around.
Renowned for this fluid phrasing and post-modern fusion of traditional roots blues with rock and roll guts, Bonamassa began playing guitar at age four, and toured with blues icon B.B. King when he was twelve. Recently, Joe was named Best Blues Guitarist in Guitar Magazine's 2007 Reader's Choice Awards. He is also the youngest member of the Memphis, TN-based Blues Foundation's Board of Directors, and a spokesperson for their respected Blues in the Schools Program.

New York guitar phenom walks tall in the blues tradition with this third album, jettisoning fiery riffs inspired by John Lee Hooker, B.B. King, Elmore James, and Albert Collins into the future with furious playing, a hard-rock sensibility, and a grizzled voice that owes a debt to Gregg Allman. Equally inspired by the Delta blues and the mid-'60s British blues boom, the young firebrand--who titled this CD after a Rod Stewart song penned while in the Jeff Beck Group--is able to fuse those two schools together, creating edgy blues rock. --Jaan Uhelszki
Customer Reviews:
smokin' joe!!!.......2007-07-03
This is my first intro to Joe Bonamassa, a recommendation I thought I'd give a try...DAMN... where have I been all this time!!! This guy rips, smokes and tears from one track to another, begining to end. Try to imagine a mixture of Joe Satriani's guitar-technique pyrotechnics meeting Buddy Guy's pure blues mastery. Too hard to imagine? You don't have to. Simply buy this cd, and you'll get the picture. Incredible talent and accomplishment for a guitarist/musicician only in his mid-twenty's. Besides the axe-work, what really sells the authenticity of a genuine bluesman is Bonamassa's smokey, aged-in-a barrell, "mature sounding" vocal quality; his voice sounds as though he has lived a much longer/much rougher life than his actual age belies. Enough talk..just buy it.
Super Blues Deluxe.......2007-06-28
This album is full of dynamic sounds and with every play you discover some new twist or turn that Joe performs. All tracks are rich and entertaining with soul ousing from every single note. This album illustrates the skill of a real blues man who can bring out the history and the feelings of the genre and make it sound brand new.
Been there, done that.......2007-06-09
This is by far one of the best blues cd, album, cassette....yes I am old enough for those...I have never heard a more soulful voice. For as old as he is his heart and soul have been places he hasn't been yet...It's now time for him to catch up to them and I hope around to hear it..
Sincerely,
Dena Cornwell
Blues..........2007-05-16
This was a very good blues cd combined with a lot of stevie ray vaughn influence. I would recomend this to others.
Blues Deluxe.......2007-04-05
A great BLUES record with sublime guitar by JOE BONAMASSA, electrical as well as acoustic at similar level of the monsters like Johnny Winter, Mike Bloomfield, Ronnie Earl,Tinsley Ellis, Elvin Bishop ( who also shared highlights in the great Paul Butterfield Blues band with the master Mike Bloomfield), Alvin Lee, Mick Taylor, Albert Collins, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimmy Page, Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton and many others. All the record songs are very good, you can find a magnificient slow BLUES as "Long distance Blues" or the title of the record "Blues Deluxe" that gets to excite. It is of justice to point out the great work of the rhythmical section, in short a sensational record.I have not been lucky to see JOE in live but if it comes to Barcelona ,sure I'll see. A must for all guitar lovers even blues fans.

Album Description
A powerful fusion of the "big rock sound" and swampy blues, You & Me gets much of its inspiration from such masters as Peter Green, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton and John Lee Hooker. Bonamassa delivers all the excitement and power of his electrifying live performances while mixing it up with dynamic music choices; from hard to soft, electric to acoustic, a music roller coaster seldom achieved by recording artists today.
You & Me also marks the debut collaboration of Bonamassa and producer Kevin Shirley (Led Zeppelin, The Black Crowes, Aerosmith, Joe Satriani). Says South African-born Shirley: "When I was approached to work with Joe, I already knew he was an awesome talent, but I also knew I'd want to do something a little different from a straight blues album. There are a lot of very good blues players performing copycat versions of classics. I wanted more of a rock sound, and I wanted Joe to showcase his depth and versatility; his vocals as well as his incredible guitar playing."
Highlights include: "Asking Around For You," a classy, poignant bluesy ballad a la Ray Charles; "Django," a Jeff Beck-flavored tribute to Django Reinhardt; "High Water Everywhere," a grungy, Delta blues tribute to the recently devastated city of New Orleans; "So Many Roads," a blues classic made famous by legend Otis Rush; and "Tea For One," a lesser known Led Zeppelin song which has been embellished with full orchestra - featuring Jason Bonham on drums.
Customer Reviews:
Blues Rock Guitar Great.......2007-07-03
If you like exceptional rock blues guitar that's crisp and not sloppy, you'll love Joe. Few guitarists compare to him these days. Bonamassa is in the league of Hendrix, SRV, Buddy Guy, Gary Moore, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Johnny Lang, Leslie West, ...in other words, he is one of the best. His original material also compares with the best stuff out there.
Now this is a good blues cd!.......2007-05-16
If you like guitar driven blues ala Stevie Ray Vaughn, you owe it to yourself to check out Joe Bonamassa.
This cd is a fantastic listen with good tunes abound. Joe's guitar work is very tasteful with sweet hooks and bone crunching riffs. Music doesn't always have to be heavy, to be heavy if you know what I mean and this release proves that point.
From start to finish this release delivers the goods and I for one, can listen to this style of blues all day long!
Check it out!
Wow!.......2007-05-12
I am no expert, but this CD is everything the other rave reviews have stated.
Guitar Mania!.......2007-05-12
Joe Bonamassa is a MONSTER guitar player! I rate him up there with Eric Johnson. And he sings too! HIs fingers are nimble and incredible. This CD is more elecric blues than some of his earlier recordings and I love it! Don't get me wrong, I love traditional blues equally well. Joe has a style of his own and I appreciate that. Tea for One is a superb remake of the Zep classic. Being a guitar guy, I like every track on this CD. But then again, I like everything this guy does! LOL!
You & Me & the Blues.......2007-05-09
Joe is a must listen to....his style speaks for itself!

New York guitar prodigy Joe Bonamassa opened for B.B. King before he was a teen, but blues is just the springboard for the sound on this second solo outing. Bonamassa spotlights his songwriting this time, using his fluid and fiery guitar work to punctuate muscular melodies more akin to anthemic arena rock than basic blues. While Bonamassa's debut disc, A New Day Yesterday, featured a supporting cast of Gregg Allman, Rick Derringer, and Leslie West, the follow-up keeps the focus on his power trio, with drummer Kenny Kramme and bassist Eric Czar providing most of the accompaniment (although keyboardist Cliff Magness creatively colors around the edges). Bonamassa is indeed a certifiable fretboard phenom, consistently capable of startlingly effective solos, but he's also a strong singer, and that's what makes the collection of songs, a dozen of the 13 cowritten by Bonamassa, successful. The title track, complete with a sizzling solo, sustains a Southern blues-rock feel, but most of the other songs, such as the power pop "Unbroken," the hard-rocking "Sick in Love," and the retro "Never Said Goodbye," which features Bonamassa on mandolin, showcase his abilities in different stylistic settings. --Michael Point
Customer Reviews:
great the DVD made me a fan.......2007-06-06
the dvd is great the music is #1 and they look likie they are enjoying themselves.
Fantastic!.......2007-05-14
This cd is again a great effort on the part of Joe Bonamassa. Maybe a bit less bluesy than his other cd's, but nonetheless a great buy. I saw him last year for the first time at the Tegelen bluesrock festival here in Holland and he just blew me away. He performed just before Johnny Winter, who was headliner, but for me Bonamassa could have also played his set. I'm gonna see him again in about a month at Bospop, also here in Holland, and I'm hugely looking forward to that.
And the guy from Denmark who only gave this cd 2 stars: shame on you!
WoW!.......2006-07-11
Not a Bad song on the Album, but it's really a rock record, not a Blues one. "Pain and Sorrow" is amazing!.
Solid Blues Rock Album.......2006-07-05
Great album from Smokin' Joe Bonamassa! His guitar work is impeccable - as always. Terrific songs like "My Mistake", "Lie #1", "Takin' the Hit", "So It's Like That" and "Pain and Sorrow". This guy is a young talent who is still forming his personal style but he will break big onto the musical scene if he continues with albums like this.
Disappointing.......2006-07-04
After listening to Bonamassa on "New Day Yesterday" I was captured by the raw power and abundance of guitar mastery.
So - I went and bought the lot of Bonammassas CDs hoping to dig into more imaginative guitar power.
In "So, It's Like That" I found an abundance of sing-along la-la cliches. If you are a fan of Bruce Springsteen you will like the hoarse screaming and loose guitar chords. Allright, a few places the guitar shines but the melodi lines and the broad chrorus style singing drags it down into the pit of trivialities. Sorry!
A single track, "Pain and Sorrow" shines though but boy it was hard to get to track 9. Track 13, "The Hard Way", has a 4 minutes sing-along intro ... or whatever happened as a new track actually starts after 4 minutes and 17 SECONDS OF SILENCE lastning the remaining almost 4 minutes. Maybe it's art, what do I know!

Guitar hero Bonamassa may have dropped the "Smokin'" prefix from his performing name that he carried as a teenager, but he still specializes in superheated fret work. And for him, the faster it is, the better. Bonamassa sought to showcase the "heavier side of blues" on his fourth studio recording, emphasizing the approach used by the classic English blues-rockers. And he does just that with a hyperactive "Travellin' South" that Ten Years After would have been proud to claim and a hard-edged remake of the B.B. King hit "Never Make Your Move Too Soon". The title track, a Blind Faith favorite, is transformed into a frenetic live jam while Lowell Fulson's "Reconsider Baby", a staple of Bonamassa's live show, is given an extended workout and features some of his most potent blues licks. Sometimes Bonamassa is in too much of a hurry for his own good, but his penchant for speed works especially well on a couple of instrumentals. He races through "Revenge of the 10 Gallon Hat", a country-flavored tribute to mentor Danny Gatton, and the rapid-fire, Al Di Meola-influenced closer "Faux Mantini." --Michael Point

Cryin' the Blues.......2007-05-09
Joe's tearful cry for the blues is a must hear that will bring a tear to a true cryer for the blues.
another great listen.......2007-01-29
Joe proves he can play any genre with masterful touch. What a pleasant diversion for the king of blues guitar!
"JUMPING JOE" WAS MEANT TO SING THE BLUES! NOT THIS!.......2007-01-17
If you're looking for some of "Jumping Joe's" classic blues (See Rick "Shaq" Goldstein's previous FIVE STAR review of "BLUES DELUXE"!) this is not the CD for you. If you want middle of the road rock guitar, and not the full "smoldering, cauldron, of thunder and lightning, guttural, volcanic, power, vocals, that "Jumping Joe", is capable of, this is for you. For a true "Jumping Joe" blues fan, the only thing this CD will do for you, is complete, your collection of his music, and you won't wonder if you missed something. In closing, a personal note to "Jumping Joe: "please record more classic electric blues! When you put out something like "Blues Deluxe" you are truly the greatest living electric blues man under 70 years old! This CD is beneath you and your loyal blues, "street gang!"
My Favorite Bonamassa So Far.......2007-01-04
I'm pretty new to Joe Bonnamassa but like what I have so far. A sort of rock oriented blues guitarist which fits my favorite style of blues this one is worth listening to.
another 5 stars.......2006-08-15
joe banamassa may be the best blues/rock guitar players of today. Those who have heard and purchased his cds have given him praise.Had to cry today is another masterpiece.I do like So its like that better, but it is hard to find fault with this.A nice mix of songs blues and rock and a dash ofthis and that.If you have any of his other cds you wont be dissapointed at all with this one.I have heard them all for many a year, going back to the late sixties and cannot say anyone is better except jimi.

Awesome Bluesrock.......2007-07-31
Nice CD I played this CD for about a month before I wanted to hear something else. This Guy can Play the guitar and sing the Blues like any of the old timers. Even the Bass Player sounds Great
A New Day Yesterday Live (my review from BARCELONA).......2007-04-06
I'm impressed, what a guitar. I totally agree with Harris Gershman's phrase "GREAT MUSIC, TERRIBLE PRESSING" but not with the 3 stars. I think this record deserves 4 or 5 stars at least even if it is more a rock record than a Blues record. In spite of that, it reaches stellar moments of Blues for instance in "Steppin out/Rice pudding" (the Bluesbraekers of Jonh Mayall play a great cover in its LP featuring Eric Clapton) or "If heartaches were nickels" (in Kenny Neal LP Hoodoo Moon there is a good cover of this piece too) or Free singer's Paul Rodgers's Blues "Walk in my shadow". Bonamassa's guitar level is absolutely great, It is even exceptional. By the way, the title record "A new day yesterday" is a great Jethro Tull singer's Ian Anderson's composition, what a great band, and in this record Joe makes a sensational cover which includes a guitar demonstration with plenty of feeling, just like the rest of the record. Highly recommended to all guitar lovers.

A very clean live recording. Joe is an incredible talent. While I love his studio work also, he is at his best live. This recording captures the auditory portion of the show well. His playing is fast, clean, and artful.

Like many live albums this takes away the studio gloss and we hear jb tear things up.In this case this is a good thing.I love all his work, but this really captures the energy jb can whip up.I do love the blues and joe can rock with the best also.It is hard for me to pick a favorite jb cd this may be the one.

FOR HEAVY METAL-POP-BLUES-AND ROCK FANS.......2007-07-14
Joe Bonamassa is similar to Walter Trout. Heavy metal mixed in with a lot of other styles. He may be a better guitar player: he doesn't play 2200 npm (notes per minute), a phrase a reviewer labeled Alvin Lee. He's an excellent singer, and a fairly good songwriter, on his contributions. You will like this disc more as you listen to good songs like: CRADLE ROCK (heavy metal); WALK IN MY SHADOWS (blues); A NEW DAY YESTERDAY (metal); IF HEARTACHES WERE NICKLES (slower blues); and CURRENT SITUATION (soul blues). He does his best singing on HEARTACHES WERE NICKLES, sounding a lot like Janis Joplin. All the numbers on A NEW DAY YESTERDAY are worth listening to: a can't miss buy.

Yeaa Joe is gonna be the next king ..i have bought all hes records not in cronological order so i heard the live album before this one ( the live album is based on this one )this one is not gonna let you down. the beat on I Know Where I Belong sounds like billy cobham (spectrum)so cool and a very tasty solo more than 2min on it cant be wrong ..so for you ho havent heard Joe.B before buy this before you buy the live album .its a great album.,PS you must buy the live its awsome.,.,
A nice start.......2006-08-29
The guest visits by Leslie West, Rick Derringer, and Greg Allman were wasted. Uninspired work on their part. The backup vocalists for Miss You, Hate You though worked out well.
Very promising stuff on his originals. His Albert King cover Don't Burn Down the Bridge is puzzling to me as he elsewhere nails the Albert thing. Stevie Ray had no problem doing a very reverent rip of Albert when he covered him. Don't know if I would go as far as saying the cover evoked memories of Spinal Tap BIG BOTTOM.
The guy even at this point has wonderful chops but is still figuring out who HE is. His latest You And Me is a lot more even and still as eclectic. His synthesis of influences is more complete and personalized as you would expect.
One wonders what the guy will be like a decade from now presuming he is still at it. His thing seems to work much better as a live trio than studio. This suggests the live version of this CD might be better, albeit more indulgent.
Good Energy.......2006-07-15
This album is good to just throw in your car CD player and fire up a couple of songs while you drive.
As a guitar player he has good energy and lays down a nice guitar sound. The vocals are pretty strong on about half the songs.
My favorite track at this point is the title track.
Disappointing.......2006-01-31
I bought this disc because my brother is a big fan of this guy. He's also very much into Stevie Ray Vaughn. Trouble is, Joe Bonamassa is basically a Stevie Ray clone here. Lot's of hard driving blues rock with the guitar front and center. But there is nothing new here that wasn't done better earlier - like Stevie Ray or Buddy Guy etc. The songwriting is a bit weak. My big complaint is the lack of variety in the music. I expect guys who are basically "guitar heros" to mix it up a bit - a la Jeff Beck or Eric Johnson. There is an all too brief flourish of acoustic guitar playing that only leaves you wanting more. Sadly the album just winds up being repetitive.

Customer Reviews:
Beware - this is NOT the right version!.......2007-07-07
This is a fantastic CD and all, but as of July '07, what they're shipping is not the "10 Years After" (Dix Ans Apres) version, which includes a bonus disc and has all 33 pieces listed on this page. I got a single 16-song disc, the same one I bought 3 or 4 years ago. Buyer beware.
Disc one is great....disc two doesn't exist...beware.......2007-07-05
I have the original 16-track version of this recording and couldn't agree more with the glowing comments left by others. However, this listing is somewhat misleading as the reviews mention that it is a newer release with a bonus disc containing 17 extra tracks. Since other reviews and the Alia Vox website itself mention that such a thing exists, I went ahead and ordered it, only to receive the same single disc version I already had. Amazon tells me the double one isn't available, so beware.
It's still great music though.
Hauntingly Beautiful.......2006-06-11
I was introduced to this utterly, utterly gorgeous soundtrack via a "friend of a friend", to whom I am eternally grateful. I listened to this on cassette tape too many times to count. The music is hauntingly beautiful and atmospheric, dark and moody, tragic and deep. This is music from the Baroque period but nothing like Bach, or Purcell, or Handel.
Vive Savall and M. Sainte Colombe .......2006-04-27
I saw the film and was enthralled by the portrayals of Sainte Colombe and Marin Marais. (Depardu was superb as always.) Some reviewers thought the film dull or tedious. I suppose in today's film culture where there is so much action without much substance there are those who would concur. I thought is was an excellent study of the characters and the music, which is rarity even in films about musicians.
French Baroque Performed by The Absolute Master of the Viola Da Gamba.......2005-10-09
In addition to French Baroque being generally and wrongly relegated to secondary status compared to Italian or German Baroque, there are probably less than 200 professional players who specialize in the viola da gamba as an instrument which was used mostly by French Baroque composers. Out of those few 200 performers, Jordi Savall is the undisputed master of his craft not only in performing French Baroque but really any Baroque piece for the viola da gamba. This soundtrack is a fine example on the diversity and depth of not only the viola's range but on works of various composers during the French Baroque period: especially the works of Marais and Sainte-Colombe. This album is also a great sample of the simply exemplary talent of Jordi Savall as a violist.
The double album primarily contains solos or duets for viola da gamba by Marais and Sainte-Colombe but has pieces by other contemporaries such as Lully. This album is a great sample of the variety of works and composers of the unique French Baroque tradition that continued to use the viola while other musical styles in Europe had virtually abandoned it for the cello. The viola da gamba has a lot more range, depth, and resonance than the cello and so the music is moodier and more contemplative than cello works such as Bach's magnificent cello suites. Solo music for viola from the French Baroque also allows freer interpretation than conventional compositions for orchestra or other chamber pieces. The jewel in this album is Marais' haunting but divine Sonnerie de Ste-Genevieve in which the dynamics of the violas and violins are truly a spiritual voyage into one's soul; at points serenely docile to demonically ferocious as if phantasms both luring and forbidding the listener to follow. The intricate complexity and resonance of this exquisite piece makes it one of the most spiritually moving Baroque sonet variations I have ever heard and it's one of my personal favorites. Both Marais and Sainte-Colombe were probably the pinnacle of achievement in terms of expressive techniques for the viola da gamba during the French Baroque period while later contemporaries such as Forqueray and Couperin became more formulaic although no less accomplished.
Jordi Savall has many priceless performances apart from this soundtrack and he is really the only competent artist for both viola da gamba specifically and primarily all French Baroque interpretations. There are no other viola players who can even compare to Savall as they really sound as little else than amateurs in comparison to his applied skills and passion of playing. I strongly recommend for anyone looking for music for viola da gamba or really any French Baroque to buy Savall/Le Concert Des Nations' performances exclusively as there's simply nothing else to look for or find that's in his caliber. Apart from a few other performnances by groups such as Les Arts Florissants, I guarantee you that the performances of all others in this style will rise to no further than being mediocre at best such as Harncourt or even Koopman who often plays with Savall. Most other viola performers quickly descend to atrocious standards in comparison to those of Savall. Even though Savall's recordings tend to be on the more expensive side, he's worth every penny take my word for it: you won't regret it! What you will regret is having bought a mediocre viola peformance after you hear Savall's as the differences will be very significant.

Is it a two-CD set with a particularly thick booklet, or a 562-page book with a compilation album attached? Either way, the unpretentious text by Keith Anderson offers an introduction to the lives and works of dozens of composers, together with recommended recordings from the Naxos and Marco Polo catalogs. Anderson includes a useful 59-page glossary of musical terms and an extensive listing of classical pieces used in films. The odd thing about the 36 extracts and complete pieces on the CDs is that they do not form an A-to-Z at all. Rather, they are arranged chronologically, from 1,000-year-old Gregorian chant to the opening movement of contemporary composer Philip Glass's Violin Concerto. Between these two points is the early music of Palestrina and Byrd; the Baroque glories of Vivaldi and Bach; the 19th-century Romantic masters, from Beethoven to Tchaikovsky; and such 20th-century greats as Rachmaninov and Stravinsky. Opera, song, and chamber music are barely represented, but only so much can fit into 151 minutes. Essentially a deluxe sampler of the vast Naxos catalogue, the discs offer a good introduction to some of the most famous and melodic music ever composed, while the book will be very useful to newcomers to the potentially confusing world of classical music. --Gary S. Dalkin
Album Description
A-Z of Classical Music is a remarkable 562-page, illustrated bok, detailing the lives of all the great composers as well as many less known, but equally fascinating, musical masters. Like the Naxos range of recording itself, A-Z of Classical Music is a rich source of inspiration for anyone either just embarking on a lifetime of musical enjoyment or for whom classical music has long been a way of life. Included within is an extensive glossary of musical terms plus a unique guide to classical music used in acclaimed films. Two-and-a-half hours of the finest music from across the centuries are contained in the accompanying CDs.

LETTER PERFECT CLASS(ICAL) ACT!.......2003-01-19
It's only natural we sometimes hit the high seas....make that Cs. This is one box set about which we sing praises. This set features more than two hours of the finest music from across the centuries by such composers as Schubert, Chopin, Mozart, Handel, Stravinsky and Glass. The set also comes with a 562-page illustrated book, detailing the lives of hundreds of composers, a
glossary of musical terms and a unique guide to the classical music used in 360 top films.
Great Tracks -- Great Value -- Great Book, Who Can Complain?.......2002-08-30
Naxos is a fabulous label -- you will not get samples of the best classical music through the ages at no better price. These tracks are as good as any of the over-priced major orchestras and in some cases better. This is a great starter set for a beginner or anyone who just wants to "taste" the classics. If you prefer Opera I would suggest the A to Z of Opera -- most of the tracks on A to Z Classical are orchestral. I was so impressed with this collection that I purchased the Discover the Classics Vol's 1-3 which will give you a more detailed look at the great classics. Take a look at the Naxos web site at NAXOSUSA.COM -- what you will see will blow your mind -- there are literally thousands of pieces that you could listen too!
At this price, how can one complain?.......2001-09-30
This is pretty much a CD version of a mini-Naxos and Marco Polo catalog. All the pieces and extracts are ordered chronologically on the 2 CDs and are of very acceptable quality, but don't expect excellence in every track. Personally, I was particularly disappointed with one of my favourite Pachelbel pieces. The Naxos Canon & Gigue lacks all the emotion of my favourite versions.
Still, any possible weaker performances are of little importance after you get your hands on the fat booklet with over 500 pages. The booklet offers a short intro about the great composers, a glossary of musical terms, a list of works used in films and dozens of illustrations of several composers.
Overall, at this price, this is a must-have pack for any beginner, and might be useful for the occasion "quick check" of the work of many composers. Do not expect many detail, nor references to all the works of some composers; I often got frustrated with the lack of detail in some cases, but in general, the booklet is very effective for a quick reference.
You will need more titles that offer more complete information, and you won't truly learn to love classical music just by reading it, but it is small and compact.
It really puzzles me why Naxos did not include a full index of composers, a serious omission. To find a particular composer you will have to look for it yourself in over 500 pages. Also, the separation of the text is not so good, making the search even a bit slower. The lack of the index is truly annoying and I am sure it will be corrected in future editions.
Even with a few weaker pieces and the lack of the index, at this price, there isn't much to argue about. This is truly a bargain that you should not miss. I would also recommend the A-Z of Opera, which offers a bigger booklet with over 700 pages, focusing on opera works and mentioning several composers that are absent from the A-Z of Classical. That other booklet has a very complete index, and much clearer text layout and separation, that's the way both booklets should have been designed.
The two sets complement each other very well. Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
Definitive?.......2006-07-17
This version of the underappreciated work of Alkan should, in deference to Marc Andre Hamelin's amazing versions, should probably be the standard by which others are judged... in addition the album includes a great collection in one purchase.
WELL worth getting........2006-05-19
This CD has what is still my favorite interpretation of Alkan's Concerto out of the three I've heard (although regrettably I haven't heard Jack Gibbons' version). Ogdon and Hamelin seem to kind of rush parts in order to impart a greater sense of technical bravura whereas Smith lets the power and majesty of the piece come through.
Also a great recording of the Alkan Symphonie. Hamelin's playing of the piece seems to have gotten all the attention but I find this one just right.
The prior two pieces would be reason enough to get any Alkan CD but this one is also loaded with a number of smaller gems, some of which it's probably going to be, what, twenty years before someone else makes a recording of any of them. The Petit Conte and Nocturne show Alkan's similarities to Chopin. The Toccatina is a delightful little piece with an awesome ending. Five great preludes, eight esquisses, etc. etc. - probably the best Alkan CD out there.
A Great Remastering!.......2005-07-15
I own the original LP recordings of some of these works and the CD version. In a previous review I remarked how the CD sound quality was not the best, but adequate.
This remastering brings back much of the original vitality and great sound quality that was in the LP version but lacking in the CD version. And all at a bargain price too!
All Alkan (and Ronald Smith fans),don't hesitate to get this 2CD set. To have the symphony for piano and concerto in such fine quality sound again is a real treat for the ears.
Most highly recommended!
Exceptional Pianist/Inspirational Composer.......2004-09-03
Ronald Smith died on the 27 May 2004 a week before I was due to hear him perform in concert at the age of 82. Obviously I was incredibly upset by his death and not having ever heard him play - especially ALKAN.
Ronald Smith was the man who re-established Charles-Valentin Alkan as one of the greatest composers of piano music. Busoni claimed "Alkan, alongside Chopin, Liszt, Schumann and Brahms, was one of the five greatest composers for the piano since Beethoven".
Of particular interest here is Ronald Smiths recordings of the Solo Piano Concerto and Symphony for Solo Piano. These are some of the most extraordinary compositions in musical literature.
Ronald Smith's recordings are exceptional and in my mind can only be equalled technically by Marc-André Hamelin performances of Alkan. Yet with this said Ronald Smith was the only virtuoso pianist who truly understood Alkans philosophy of music - hence smith's book on Alkan - The Man The Music.
This album is highly recommended to all music and piano playing enthusiasts.
The music is innovative, passionate; but not sentimental and incredibly interesting in structure, colouring and philosophy.
